Assessing the efficiency and microbial diversity of H2S-removing biotrickling filters at various pH conditions

This study aimed to investigate the operation of three parallel biotrickling filters (BTFs) in removing H2S at different pH conditions (haloalkaliphilic, neutrophilic, and acidophilic) and their associated microbial population in the biodesulfurization process. BTF columns were inoculated with enriched inoculum and experiments were performed by gradually reducing Empty Bed Retention Time (EBRT) and increasing inlet concentration in which the maximum removal efficiency and maximum elimination capacity in EBRT 60 s reached their maximum level in haloalkaline condition (91% and 179.5 g S-H2S m-3 h-1). For visualizing the attached microbial biofilms on pall rings, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used and microbial community structure analysis by NGS showed that the most abundant phyla in haBTF, nBTF, and aBTF belong to Gammaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, and Acidithiobacillia, respectively. Shannon and Simpson indexes evaluation showed a lower diversity of bacteria in the aBTF reactor than that of nBTF and haBTF and beta analysis indicated a different composition of bacteria in haBTF compared to the other two filters. These results indicated that the proper performance of BTF under haloalkaliphilic conditions is the most effective way for H2S removal from air pollutants of different industries.

Biochemical engineering for elemental sulfur from flue gases through multi-enzymatic based approaches - A review

Flue gases are the gases which are produced from industries related to chemical manufacturing, petrol refineries, power plants and ore processing plants. Along with other pollutants, sulfur present in the flue gas is detrimental to the environment. Therefore, environmentalists are concerned about its removal and recovery of resources from flue gases due to its activation ability in the atmosphere to transform into toxic substances. This review is aimed at a critical assessment of the techniques developed for resource recovery from flue gases. The manuscript discusses various bioreactors used in resource recovery such as hollow fibre membrane reactor, rotating biological contractor, sequential batch reactor, fluidized bed reactor, entrapped cell bioreactor and hybrid reactors. In conclusion, this manuscript provides a comprehensive analysis of the potential of thermotolerant and thermophilic microbes in sulfur removal. Additionally, it evaluates the efficacy of a multi-enzyme engineered bioreactor in this process. Furthermore, the study introduces a groundbreaking sustainable model for elemental sulfur recovery, offering promising prospects for environmentally-friendly and economically viable sulfur removal techniques in various industrial applications.

Weaponising microbes for peace

There is much human disadvantage and unmet need in the world, including deficits in basic resources and services considered to be human rights, such as drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, healthy nutrition, access to basic healthcare, and a clean environment. Furthermore, there are substantive asymmetries in the distribution of key resources among peoples. These deficits and asymmetries can lead to local and regional crises among peoples competing for limited resources, which, in turn, can become sources of discontent and conflict. Such conflicts have the potential to escalate into regional wars and even lead to global instability. Ergo: in addition to moral and ethical imperatives to level up, to ensure that all peoples have basic resources and services essential for healthy living and to reduce inequalities, all nations have a self-interest to pursue with determination all available avenues to promote peace through reducing sources of conflicts in the world. Microorganisms and pertinent microbial technologies have unique and exceptional abilities to provide, or contribute to the provision of, basic resources and services that are lacking in many parts of the world, and thereby address key deficits that might constitute sources of conflict. However, the deployment of such technologies to this end is seriously underexploited. Here, we highlight some of the key available and emerging technologies that demand greater consideration and exploitation in endeavours to eliminate unnecessary deprivations, enable healthy lives of all and remove preventable grounds for competition over limited resources that can escalate into conflicts in the world. We exhort central actors: microbiologists, funding agencies and philanthropic organisations, politicians worldwide and international governmental and non-governmental organisations, to engage - in full partnership - with all relevant stakeholders, to 'weaponise' microbes and microbial technologies to fight resource deficits and asymmetries, in particular among the most vulnerable populations, and thereby create humanitarian conditions more conducive to harmony and peace.

Absorption processes in reducing the odor nuisance of wastewater

Deep social awareness, especially in highly developed countries, imposes pressure on entrepreneurs and service providers, forcing them to undertake effective actions to minimize the effects of their activities also in terms of the emission of malodorous substances. The article presents information on the absorption processes harnessed in the deodorization of gases from wastewater management and the characteristics of these gases. Avoiding emissions is not always possible, hence there is a need to conduct an inventory of such gases and use deodorization methods. The specificity of gases from wastewater management and their prevalence urge the search for cheap and easy-to-use deodorization methods. It is obvious that the selection of deodorization technology is driven by many factors and should be preceded by a thorough analysis of the possibilities and limitations of various solutions. The aim of this article is, therefore, to present the characteristics of gases from wastewater management and to discuss various technologies based on absorption processes as a technology for deodorizing such gases in order to help potential investors choose an emission-reducing method suitable for particular conditions.•Malodorous substances in wastewater management.•Deodorization using water and chemical absorption.•Deodorization using biological purification.

Enhanced Removal of Hydrophobic Short-Chain n-Alkanes from Gas Streams in Biotrickling Filters in Presence of Surfactant

Emissions of n-alkanes are facing increasingly stringent management challenges. Biotrickling filtration in the presence of surfactants is a competitive alternative for the enhanced removal of n-alkanes. Herein, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) was added into the liquid phase feeding a biotrickling filter (BTF) to enhance the removal of various short-chain n-alkanes from n-hexane (C6) to methane (C1). The removal performance of C6-C1 and microbial response mechanisms were explored. The results showed that the removal efficiency (RE) of n-alkanes decreased from 77 ± 1.3 to 35 ± 5.6% as the carbon chain number of n-alkanes decreased from C6 to C1, under the conditions of an n-alkane inlet load of 58 ± 3.0 g/m³·h and EBCT of 30 s. The removal performance of n-alkanes was enhanced significantly by the introduction of 15 mg/L SDBS, as the RE of C6 reached 99 ± 0.7% and the RE of C1 reached 74 ± 3.3%. The strengthening mechanisms were that the apparent Henry's law coefficient of n-alkanes decreased by 11 ± 1.4-30 ± 0.3%, and the cell surface hydrophobicity of microorganisms improved from 71 ± 5.6 to 87 ± 4.0% with the existence of SDBS. Moreover, the presence of SDBS promoted the succession and activity of the microbial community. The activities of alkane hydroxylase and alcohol dehydrogenase were 5.8 and 5.9 times higher than those without SDBS, and the concentration of the cytochrome P450 gene was improved 2.2 times. Therefore, the addition of SDBS is an effective strategy that makes BTF suitable for the removal of various n-alkanes from waste gas streams.

A review on biofiltration techniques: Recent advancements in the removal of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals in the treatment of polluted water

Good quality of water determines the healthy life of living beings on this earth. The cleanliness of water was interrupted by the pollutants emerging out of several human activities. Industrialization, urbanization, heavy population, and improper disposal of wastes are found to be the major reasons for the contamination of water. Globally, the inclusion of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals released by manufacturing industries, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemical processes have created environmental issues. The toxic nature of these pollutants has led researchers, scientists, and industries to exhibit concern towards the complete eradication of them. In this scenario, the development of wastewater treatment methodologies at low cost and in an eco-friendly way had gained importance at the international level. Recently, bio-based technologies were considered for environmental remedies. Biofiltration based works have shown a significant result for the removal of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals in the treatment of wastewater. This was done with several biological sources such as bacteria, fungi, algae, plants, yeasts, etc. The biofiltration technique is cost-effective, simple, biocompatible, sustainable, and eco-friendly compared to conventional techniques. This review article provides deep insight into biofiltration technologies engaged in the removal of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals in the wastewater treatment process.

Markers for the Comparison of the Performances of Anoxic Biotrickling Filters in Biogas Desulphurisation: A Critical Review

The agriculture and livestock industry generate waste used in anaerobic digestion to produce biogas containing methane (CH4), useful in the generation of electricity and heat. However, although biogas is mainly composed of CH4 (~65%) and CO2 (~34%), among the 1% of other compounds present is hydrogen sulphide (H2S) which deteriorates engines and power generation fuel cells that use biogas, generating a foul smell and contaminating the environment. As a solution to this, anoxic biofiltration, specifically with biotrickling filters (BTFs), stands out in terms of the elimination of H2S as it is cost-effective, efficient, and more environmentally friendly than chemical solutions. Research on the topic is uneven in terms of presenting performance markers, underestimating many microbiological indicators. Research from the last decade was analyzed (2010–2020), demonstrating that only 56% of the reviewed publications did not report microbiological analysis related to sulphur oxidising bacteria (SOB), the most important microbial group in desulphurisation BTFs. This exposes fundamental deficiencies within this type of research and difficulties in comparing performance between research works. In this review, traditional and microbiological performance markers of anoxic biofiltration to remove H2S are described. Additionally, an analysis to assess the efficiency of anoxic BTFs for biogas desulphurisation is proposed in order to have a complete and uniform assessment for research in this field.

Efficient purification of toluene gas by anoxic denitrification

As a part of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), toluene does harm to human health. This paper reported the purification of toluene waste gas by liquid-phase absorption and anoxic denitrification. In this work, two same biofilm reactors were set to treat toluene waste gas, one of which was added into nitrate as an electron acceptor. Then, the purification properties of toluene waste gas treated by anoxic denitrification and biological methods were compared. The results indicate that with the increase of toluene mass concentration, the toluene removal rate of the denitrifying reactor decreased slightly. When the inlet concentration increased from 50 mg m^-3 to 3440 mg m^-3, the removal efficiency of the denitrifying reactor remained over 94.1% while the removal efficiency of the traditional bioreactor decreased to 82.9%. The highest removal capacity of the denitrifying reactor was 127.2 g m^-3 h^-1, which was 11.8% higher than that of the traditional bioreactor. Toluene was degraded by denitrification inside the biofilm microenvironment hypoxia; the denitrification rate increased along with the increase of inlet concentration within certain limits and reached a maximum of 2.4 mg NO₃^--N L^-1 h^-1. Nitrate can act as an electron acceptor, and denitrification can promote aerobic degradation and intensify the concentration gradient inside the biofilm to strengthen the toluene transfer process.

Low-dosage ozonation in gas-phase biofilter promotes community diversity and robustness

BACKGROUND

The ozonation of biofilters is known to alleviate clogging and pressure drop issues while maintaining removal performances in biofiltration systems treating gaseous volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The effects of ozone on the biofilter microbiome in terms of biodiversity, community structure, metabolic abilities, and dominant taxa correlated with performance remain largely unknown.

METHODS

This study investigated two biofilters treating high-concentration toluene operating in parallel, with one acting as control and the other exposed to low-dosage (200 mg/m³) ozonation. The microbial community diversity, metabolic rates of different carbon sources, functional predictions, and microbial co-occurrence networks of both communities were examined.

RESULTS

Consistently higher biodiversity of over 30% was observed in the microbiome after ozonation, with increased overall metabolic abilities for amino acids and carboxylic acids. The relative abundance of species with reported stress-tolerant and biofilm-forming abilities significantly increased, with a consortium of changes in predicted biological pathways, including shifts in degradation pathways of intermediate compounds, while the correlation of top ASVs and genus with performance indicators showed diversifications in microbiota responsible for toluene degradation. A co-occurrence network of the community showed a decrease in average path distance and average betweenness with ozonation.

CONCLUSION

Major degrading species highly correlated with performance shifted after ozonation. Increases in microbial biodiversity, coupled with improvements in metabolizing performances of multiple carbon sources including organic acids could explain the consistent performance commonly seen in the ozonation of biofilters despite the decrease in biomass, while avoiding acid buildup in long-term operation. The increased presence of stress-tolerant microbes in the microbiome coupled with the decentralization of the co-occurrence network suggest that ozonation could not only ameliorate clogging issues but also provide a microbiome more robust to loading shock seen in full-scale biofilters. Proposed mechanisms of toluene removal by vermicompost and earthworms Eisenia fetida

For potential use in air treatment by biofiltration, a new material composed of vermicompost and earthworms (Eisenia fetida) was tested for the removal of a volatile organic compound (VOC), toluene. The removal rate of toluene was measured during batch experiments in presence of vermicompost only, earthworms only and a mixture of both. In the chosen experimental conditions, no mortality of earthworms was recorded and the results showed that the presence of earthworms allowed an increase in toluene removal rate (0.213 mg h^-1) compared to vermicompost only (0.084 mg h^-1) and earthworms only (0.136 mg h^-1). From the experimental data, mechanisms of toluene transfer and adsorption/biodegradation by microorganisms from vermicompost and/or earthworms were proposed.

Effects of substrate fluctuation on the performance, microbial community and metabolic function of a biofilter for gaseous dichloromethane treatment

Dichloromethane (DCM) is a harmful volatile organic compound that usually originates from pharmaceutical industry. In this study, the treatment of gaseous DCM in a biofilter was investigated by gradually increasing the DCM inlet concentration. Nearly 80% of DCM could be removed when the inlet concentration was lower than 0.30 g m^-3. The maximum elimination capacity of 26.6 g m^-3·h^-1 was achieved at an inlet loading rate of 38.4 g m^-3·h^-1. However, with the increase in the inlet concentration to more than 0.60 g m^-3, the removal efficiency obviously decreased to about 40%. After a starvation period of 2 weeks, the biofilter rapidly recovered its performance. The Haldane model including a substrate inhibition term was applied to describe the kinetics of the biofilter. High-throughput sequencing indicated that DCM-degrading genera, such as Rhodanobacter sp., Hyphomicrobium sp., Rhizomicrobium sp., Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp., and Clostridium sp., were dominant in the biofilter in different operation phases. The microbial communities and diversities were greatly affected by the DCM concentration. Microbial metabolic functions were predicted using Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt) based on the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database. The results indicated that xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and amino acid metabolism were the three most abundant metabolic pathways of the microbes. The abundances of these metabolic functions were also altered by the DCM concentration.

Simultaneous degradation of n-hexane and production of biosurfactants by Pseudomonas sp. strain NEE2 isolated from oil-contaminated soils

The presence of surfactants in biofilters could enhance hydrophobic VOC removal. In this study, blood agar plate, methylene blue agar plate and a culture with n-hexane as the only carbon source were used to screen strains that could biodegrade n-hexane and produce biosurfactants simultaneously. The effects of n-hexane concentration on n-hexane removal and biosurfactant production were also investigated. Results showed that such a strain identified to be Pseudomonas sp. Strain NEE2 was successfully isolated from oil-polluted soils. The biosurfactants production by this strain were dependent on the initial concentration of n-hexane (132-2640 mg/L). At the concentration of 2640 mg/L of n-hexane, the biosurfactants promoted n-hexane removal. At 132 mg/L of n-hexane, n-hexane removal efficiency on day 2 exceeded 60%. The synergistic mechanisms of n-hexane removal and biosurfactant production by Pseudomonas sp. Strain NEE2 were discussed including the enhanced mass transfer from gas to liquid phase, within the biofilm phase and biodegradation at the presence of biosurfactants as well as the consequently enhanced production of the biosurfactants. These results in this study proved that it is possible for microorganisms utilizing the synergistic effect of hydrophobic VOC degradation and biosurfactant production for cost-effective hydrophobic VOC removal in biofilters.

A comparison of biofiltration performance based on bacteria and fungi for treating toluene vapors from airflow

With increasing concerns about industrial gas contaminants and the growing demand for durable and sustainable technologies, attentions have been gradually shifted to biological air pollution controls. The ability of Pseudomonas putida PTCC 1694 (bacteria) and Pleurotus ostreatus IRAN 1781C (fungus) to treat contaminated gas stream with toluene and its biological degradation was compared under similar operating conditions. For this purpose, a biofilter on the laboratory scale was designed and constructed and the tests were carried out in two stages. The first stage, bacterial testing, lasted 20 days and the second stage, fungal testing, lasted 16 days. Inlet loading rates (IL) for bacterial and fungal biofilters were 21.62 ± 6.04 and 26.24 ± 7.35 g/m³ h respectively. In general, fungal biofilter showed a higher elimination capacity (EC) than bacterial biofilter (18.1 ± 6.98 vs 13.7 ± 4.7 g/m³ h). However, the pressure drop in the fungal biofilter was higher than the bacterial biofilter (1.26 ± 0.3 vs 1 ± 0.3 mm water), which was probably due to the growth of the mycelium. Fungal biofiltration showed a better performance in the removal of toluene from the air stream.

Variations in microbial community structure and functional gene expression in bio-treatment processes with odorous pollutants

Engineered microbial ecosystems in biofilters have been widely applied to treat odorous gases from industrial emissions. Variations in microbial community structure and function associated with the removal of odorous gases by biofilters are largely unknown. This study performed a metagenomic analysis to discover shifts in microbial community structures in a commercial scale biofilter after treating odorous gas. Our study identified 175,675 functional genes assigned into 43 functional KEGG pathways. Based on the unigene sequences, there were significant changes in microbial community structures in the biofilter after treating odorous gas. The dominant genera were Thiobacillus and Oceanicaulis before the treatment, and were Acidithiobacillus and Ferroplasma after the treatment. A clustering analysis showed that the number of down-regulated microbes exceeded the number of up-regulated microbes, suggesting that odorous gas treatment reduced in microbial community structures. A differential expression analysis identified 29,975 up- and 452,599 down-regulated genes. An enrichment analysis showed 17 classic types of xenobiotic biodegradation pathways. The results identified 16 and 15 genes involved in ammonia and sulfite metabolism, respectively; an analysis of their relative abundance identified several up-regulated genes, which may be efficient genes involved in removing odorous gases. The data provided in this study demonstrate the changes in microbial communities and help identify the dominant microflora and genes that play key roles in treating odorous gases.

Enhanced biodegradation of n-hexane by Pseudomonas sp. strain NEE2

Pseudomonas sp. strain NEE2 isolated from oil-polluted soils could biodegrade n-hexane effectively. In this study, the secretory product of n-hexane biodegradation by NEE2 was extracted, characterized, and investigated on the secretory product’s enhanced effect on n-hexane removal. The effects of various biodegradation conditions on n-hexane removal by NEE2, including nitrogen source, pH value, and temperature were also investigated. Results showed that the secretory product lowered surface tension of water from 72 to 40 mN/m, with a critical micelle concentration of 340 mg/L, demonstrating that there existed biosurfactants in the secretory product. The secretory product at 50 mg/L enhanced n-hexane removal by 144.4% within 48 h than the control group. The optimum conditions for n-hexane removal by NEE2 were at temperature of 25–30 °C, pH value of 7–8, and (NH₄)₂SO₄ as nitrogen source. Besides n-hexane, NEE2 could also utilize a variety of carbon sources. These results proved that NEE2 can consume hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to produce biosurfactants which can further enhance hydrophobic VOCs degradation.

Effects of ozone treatment on performance and microbial community composition in biofiltration systems treating ethyl acetate vapours

Ozone (O₃) treatment is an effective strategy in maintaining high efficiency and control of biomass accumulation in gas phase biofiltration. However, little is known about the long-term impact of O₃ on the microbial communities. In the present study, two biofilters treating gaseous ethyl acetate were operated continuously for 230 days with inlet loads up to 180 g m^-3∙h^-1. A biofilter operated under continuous O₃ addition (90 ppb_v) yielded consistently higher removal efficiency (RE) and elimination capacity (EC) compared to the control system. After 120 days of operation, a lower biomass content accompanied by a pH of 1.5 was observed in the ozonated biofilter, which was 2 units lower compared to the control reactor. Both reactors developed a distinct microbial community composition over the course of 230 days. The bacterial community was dominated in both biofilters by Beijerinckia and Gluconacetobacter, while Rhinocladiella similis, Trichosporon veenhuissi and Exophilia oligosperma were abundant in the fungal community. These findings suggest that ozonation of the biofiltration systems not only reduced clogging, but also contributed to the selection of biomass suitable for degradation of ethyl acetate.

Technologies for deodorization of malodorous gases

There is an increasing number of citizens' complaints about odor nuisance due to production or service activity. High social awareness imposes pressure on entrepreneurs and service providers forcing them to undertake effective steps aimed at minimization of the effects of their activity, also with respect to emission of malodorous substances. The article presents information about various technologies used for gas deodorization. Known solutions can be included into two groups: technologies offering prevention of emissions, and methodological solutions that enable removal of malodorous substances from the stream of emitted gases. It is obvious that the selection of deodorization technologies is conditioned by many factors, and it should be preceded by an in-depth analysis of possibilities and limitations offered by various solutions. The aim of the article is presentation of the available gas deodorization technologies as to facilitate the potential investors with selection of the method of malodorous gases emission limitation, suitable for particular conditions.

Airborne bacteria in a wastewater treatment plant: Emission characterization, source analysis and health risk assessment

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are major sources of airborne bacteria, which could pose health risks to WWTP workers and surrounding residents. In this study, air samples were collected from various treatment facilities of a typical WWTP. Community compositions of airborne bacteria were identified by high-throughput sequencing technique. SourceTracker was used to determine the percentages of airborne bacteria from wastewater, sludge, ambient air, and other environment. Health risks associated with airborne bacteria were estimated based on the average daily dose rates (ADD) of exposure by inhalation and skin contact. Concentrations of airborne bacteria varied in a wide range of 23-4878 CFU/m³. The main emission sources of airborne bacteria were treatment facilities with aeration, mechanical agitation, and located indoors. For treatment facilities located indoors, higher percentages of airborne bacteria were associated with wastewater and sludge, while more airborne bacteria were originated from the ambient air for outdoor installations. Opportunistic pathogens such as Micrococcus, Bacteroides, Chryseobacterium, Pseudomonas, and Acinetobacter, were detected in airborne bacteria. Inhalation was the main pathway for on-site workers exposure to airborne bacteria. Due to the presence of opportunistic pathogens, strict control measures should be employed in WWTPs to reduce the infection risks.

Pilot-scale biofiltration at a materials recovery facility: The impact on bioaerosol control

This study investigated the performance of four pilot-scale biofilters for the removal of bioaerosols from waste airstreams in a materials recovery facility (MRF) based in Leeds, UK. A six-stage Andersen sampler was used to measure the concentrations of four groups of bioaerosols (Aspergillus fumigatus, total fungi, total mesophilic bacteria and Gram negative bacteria) in the airstream before and after passing through the biofilters over a period of 11 months. The biofilters achieved average removal efficiency (RE) of 70% (35 to 97%) for A. fumigatus, 71% (35 to 94%) for total fungi, 68% (47 to 86%) for total mesophilic bacteria and 50% (-4 to 85%) for Gram negative bacteria, provided that the inlet concentration was high (10³-10⁵ cfu m^-3), which is the case for most waste treatment facilities. The performance was highly variable at low inlet concentration with some cases showing an increase in outlet concentrations, suggesting that biofilters had the potential to be net emitters of bioaerosols. The gas phase residence time did not appear to have any statistically significant impact on bioaerosol removal efficiency. Particle size distribution varied between the inlet and outlet air, with the outlet having a greater proportion of smaller sized particles that represent a greater human health risk as they can penetrate deep into the respiratory system where gaseous exchange occurs. However, the outlet concentrations were low and would further be diluted by wind in full scale applications. In conclusion, this study shows that biofilters designed and operated for odour degradation can also achieve significant bioaerosol control in waste gas.

Enhancement of TCE removal by a static magnetic field in a fungal biotrickling filter

A fungal biotrickling filter (BTF) was employed to treat trichloroethylene (TCE) gas under different magnetic field intensities (MFIs). When the TCE inlet concentrations were approximately 370, 500-900, and 1000 mg/m³, the removal performances followed the order: MFI 20.0 mT > MFI 60.0 mT > MFI 80.0 mT > MFI 0 mT. In particular, at a TCE inlet concentration of 1000 mg/m³, MFI 20.0 mT was significantly better than MFI 0 mT performance. The corresponding removal efficiencies and maximum elimination capacities were 52.9%, 4854.1 mg/m³ h and 39.4%, 3594.8 mg/m³ h, respectively. BTF was shut down completely for 7 days and rapidly recovered in 6-10 days. High-throughput sequencing indicated that MF significantly affected the fungal community and significantly improved the relative abundance of the phylum Ascomycota, achieving the highest abundance of Ascomycota at MFI 20.0. These results indicated that a lower MFI can efficiently improve TCE removal performance in a fungal BTF.

Effects of oxygen and water content on microbial distribution in the polyurethane foam cubes of a biofilter for SO2 removal

The performance of a biofilter for off-gas treatment relies on the activity of microorganisms and adequate O₂ and H₂O. In present study, a microelectrode was applied to analyze O₂ in polyurethane foam cubes (PUFCs) packed in a biofilter for SO₂ removal. The O₂ distribution varied with the density and water-containing rate (WCR) of PUFCs. The O₂ concentration dropped sharply from 10.2 to 0.8mg/L from the surface to the center of a PUFC with 97.20% of WCR. The PUFCs with high WCR presented aerobic-anoxic-aerobic areas. Three-dimensional simulated images demonstrated that the structure of PUFCs with high WCR consisted of an aerobic "shell" and an anoxic "core", with high-density PUFCs featuring a larger anoxic area than low-density PUFCs. Moreover, the H₂O distribution in the PUFC was uneven and affected the O₂ concentration. Whereas aerobic bacteria were observed in the PUFC surface, facultative anaerobic microorganisms were found at the PUFC core, where the O₂ concentration was relatively low. O₂ and H₂O distributions differed in the PUFCs, and the distribution of microorganisms varied accordingly.

Microbial compositions and metabolic interactions in one- and two-phase partitioning airlift bioreactors treating a complex VOC mixture

Engineered microbial ecosystems in bioscrubbers for the treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been complicated by complex VOC mixtures from various industrial emissions. Microbial associations with VOC removal performance of the bioscrubbers are still not definitive. Here, one- and two-phase partitioning airlift bioreactors were used for the treatment of a complex VOC mixture. Microbial characteristics in both bioreactors were uncovered by high-throughput metagenomics sequencing. Results showed that dominant species with specialized VOC biodegradability were mainly responsible for high removal efficiency of relative individual VOC. Competitive enzyme inhibitions among the VOC mixture were closely related to the deterioration of removal performance for individual VOC. Relative to the mass transfer resistance, the specialized biodegrading functions of microbial inoculations and enzymatic interactions among individual VOC biodegradation also must be carefully evaluated to optimize the treatment of complex VOC mixtures in bioreactors.

Odour emissions from poultry litter - A review litter properties, odour formation and odorant emissions from porous materials

Odour emissions from meat chicken sheds can at times cause odour impacts on surrounding communities. Litter is seen as the primary source of this odour. Formation and emission of odour from meat chicken litter during the grow-out period are influenced by various factors such as litter conditions, the environment, microbial activity, properties of the odorous gases and management practices. Odour emissions vary spatially and temporally. This variability has made it challenging to understand how specific litter conditions contribute to odour emissions from the litter and production sheds. Existing knowledge on odorants, odour formation mechanisms and emission processes that contribute to odour emissions from litter are reviewed. Litter moisture content and water thermodynamics (i.e. water activity, Aw) are also examined as factors that contribute to microbial odour formation, physical litter conditions and the exchange of individual odorant gases at the air-water interface. Substantial opportunities exist for future research on litter conditions and litter formation mechanisms and how these contribute to odour emissions. Closing this knowledge gap will improve management strategies that intercept and interfere with odour formation and emission processes leading to an overall reduction in the potential to cause community impacts.

Comparative elimination of dimethyl disulfide by maifanite and ceramic-packed biotrickling filters and their response to microbial community

Unpleasant odor emissions have traditionally occupied an important role in environmental concern. In this paper, twin biotrickling filters (BTFs) packed with different packing materials, seeded with Bacillus cereus GIGAN2, were successfully constructed to purify gaseous dimethyl disulfide (DMDS). The maifanite-packed BTF showed superior biodegradation capability to the ceramic-packed counterpart in terms of removal efficiency and elimination capacity under similar conditions. At an empty bed residence time of 123 s, 100% of DMDS could be removed by maifanite-packed BTF when DMDS inlet concentration was below 0.41 g m(-3). To achieve same effect, the inlet concentration must be lower than 0.25 g m(-3) for ceramic-packed BTF. The bacterial communities analyses found higher relative abundance of GIGAN2 in the maifanite-packed BTF, suggesting that maifanite is more suitable for GIGAN2 immobilization and for subsequent DMDS removal. This work indicates maifanite is a promising packing material for real odorous gases purification.

Management of Microbial Communities through Transient Disturbances Enhances the Functional Resilience of Nitrifying Gas-Biofilters to Future Disturbances

Microbial communities have a key role for the performance of engineered ecosystems such as waste gas biofilters. Maintaining constant performance despite fluctuating environmental conditions is of prime interest, but it is highly challenging because the mechanisms that drive the response of microbial communities to disturbances still have to be disentangled. Here we demonstrate that the bioprocess performance and stability can be improved and reinforced in the face of disturbances, through a rationally predefined strategy of microbial resource management (MRM). This strategy was experimentally validated in replicated pilot-scale nitrifying gas-biofilters, for the two steps of nitrification. The associated biological mechanisms were unraveled through analysis of functions, abundances and community compositions for the major actors of nitrification in these biofilters, that is, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and Nitrobacter-like nitrite-oxidizers (NOB). Our MRM strategy, based on the application of successive, transient perturbations of increasing intensity, enabled to steer the nitrifier community in a favorable way through the selection of more resistant AOB and NOB sharing functional gene sequences close to those of, respectively, Nitrosomonas eutropha and Nitrobacter hamburgensis that are well adapted to high N load. The induced community shifts resulted in significant enhancement of nitrification resilience capacity following the intense perturbation.

Temporal variation of microbial population in a thermophilic biofilter for SO₂ removal

The performance of a biofilter relies on the activity of microorganisms during the gas contaminant treatment process. In this study, SO2 was treated using a laboratory-scale biofilter packed with polyurethane foam cubes (PUFC), on which thermophilic desulfurization bacteria were attached. The thermophilic biofilter effectively reduced SO2 within 10months of operation time, with a maximum elimination capacity of 48.29 g/m(3)/hr. Temporal shifts in the microbial population in the thermophilic biofilter were determined through polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequence analysis. The substrate species and environmental conditions in the biofilter influenced the microbial population. Oxygen distribution in the PUFC was analyzed using a microelectrode. When the water-containing rate in PUFC was over 98%, the oxygen distribution presented aerobic-anoxic-aerobic states along the test route on the PUFC. The appearance of sulfate-reducing bacteria was caused by the anaerobic conditions and sulfate formation after 4months of operation.

Integral approaches to wastewater treatment plant upgrading for odor prevention: Activated Sludge and Oxidized Ammonium Recycling

Traditional physical/chemical end-of-the-pipe technologies for odor abatement are relatively expensive and present high environmental impacts. On the other hand, biotechnologies have recently emerged as cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternatives but are still limited by their investment costs and land requirements. A more desirable approach to odor control is the prevention of odorant formation before being released to the atmosphere, but limited information is available beyond good design and operational practices of the wastewater treatment process. The present paper reviews two widely applicable and economic alternatives for odor control, Activated Sludge Recycling (ASR) and Oxidized Ammonium Recycling (OAR), by discussing their fundamentals, key operating parameters and experience from the available pilot and field studies. Both technologies present high application potential using readily available plant by-products with a minimum plant upgrading, and low investment and operating costs, contributing to the sustainability and economic efficiency of odor control at wastewater treatment facilities.

Investigating bacterial populations in styrene-degrading biofilters by 16S rDNA tag pyrosequencing

Microbial biofilms are essential components in the elimination of pollutants within biofilters, yet still little is known regarding the complex relationships between microbial community structure and biodegradation function within these engineered ecosystems. To further explore this relationship, 16S rDNA tag pyrosequencing was applied to samples taken at four time points from a styrene-degrading biofilter undergoing variable operating conditions. Changes in microbial structure were observed between different stages of biofilter operation, and the level of styrene concentration was revealed to be a critical factor affecting these changes. Bacterial genera Azoarcus and Pseudomonas were among the dominant classified genera in the biofilter. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and correlation analysis revealed that the genera Brevundimonas, Hydrogenophaga, and Achromobacter may play important roles in styrene degradation under increasing styrene concentrations. No significant correlations (P > 0.05) could be detected between biofilter operational/functional parameters and biodiversity measurements, although biological heterogeneity within biofilms and/or technical variability within pyrosequencing may have considerably affected these results. Percentages of selected bacterial taxonomic groups detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were compared to results from pyrosequencing in order to assess the effectiveness and limitations of each method for identifying each microbial taxon. Comparison of results revealed discrepancies between the two methods in the detected percentages of numerous taxonomic groups. Biases and technical limitations of both FISH and pyrosequencing, such as the binding of FISH probes to non-target microbial groups and lack of classification of sequences for defined taxonomic groups from pyrosequencing, may partially explain some differences between the two methods.

D-amino acids inhibit initial bacterial adhesion: thermodynamic evidence

Bacterial biofilms are structured communities of cells enclosed in a self-produced hydrated polymeric matrix that can adhere to inert or living surfaces. D-Amino acids were previously identified as self-produced compounds that mediate biofilm disassembly by causing the release of the protein component of the polymeric matrix. However, whether exogenous D-amino acids could inhibit initial bacterial adhesion is still unknown. Here, the effect of the exogenous amino acid D-tyrosine on initial bacterial adhesion was determined by combined use of chemical analysis, force spectroscopic measurement, and theoretical predictions. The surface thermodynamic theory demonstrated that the total interaction energy increased with more D-tyrosine, and the contribution of Lewis acid-base interactions relative to the change in the total interaction energy was much greater than the overall nonspecific interactions. Finally, atomic force microscopy analysis implied that the hydrogen bond numbers and adhesion forces decreased with the increase in D-tyrosine concentrations. D-Tyrosine contributed to the repulsive nature of the cell and ultimately led to the inhibition of bacterial adhesion. This study provides a new way to regulate biofilm formation by manipulating the contents of D-amino acids in natural or engineered systems.

Sustainability of soil fertility and the use of lignocellulosic crop harvest residues for the production of biofuels: a literature review

Use of lignocellulosic crop harvest residues for liquid or gaseous biofuel production may impact soil quality, long-term soil fertility and the major determinants of the latter, stocks of soil organic carbon and nutrients. When soil organic carbon stocks of mineral cropland soils are to be maintained, there is scope for the removal of lignocellulosic harvest residues in several systems with much reduced tillage or no tillage. The scope for such removal might be increased when suitably treated residues from the conversion of harvest residues into biofuel are returned to cropland soils. For mineral cropland soils under conventional tillage, the scope for the production of liquid biofuels from harvest residues is likely to be less than in the case of no-till systems. When fertility of cropland soils is to be sustainable, nutrients present in suitably treated biofuel production residues have to be returned to these soils. Apparently, the actual return of carbon and nutrients present in residues of biofuel production from crop harvest residues to arable soils currently predominantly concerns the application of digestates of anaerobic digestion. The effects thereof on soil fertility and quality need further clarification. Further clarification about the effects on soil fertility and quality of chars and of co-products of lignocellulosic ethanol production is also needed.

A comparative study of fungal and bacterial biofiltration treating a VOC mixture

Bacterial biofilters usually exhibit a high microbial diversity and robustness, while fungal biofilters have been claimed to better withstand low moisture contents and pH values, and to be more efficient coping with hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, there are only few systematic evaluations of both biofiltration technologies. The present study compared fungal and bacterial biofiltration for the treatment of a VOC mixture (propanal, methyl isobutyl ketone-MIBK, toluene and hexanol) under the same operating conditions. Overall, fungal biofiltration supported lower elimination capacities than its bacterial counterpart (27.7 ± 8.9 vs 40.2 ± 5.4 gCm(-3) reactor h(-1)), which exhibited a final pressure drop 60% higher than that of the bacterial biofilter due to mycelial growth. The VOC mineralization ratio was also higher in the bacterial bed (≈ 63% vs ≈ 43%). However, the substrate biodegradation preference order was similar for both biofilters (propanal>hexanol>MIBK>toluene) with propanal partially inhibiting the consumption of the rest of the VOCs. Both systems supported an excellent robustness versus 24h VOC starvation episodes. The implementation of a fungal/bacterial coupled system did not significantly improve the VOC removal performance compared to the individual biofilter performances.
