Fate and ecological effects of decabromodiphenyl ether in a field lysimeter

A Review on Tetrabromobisphenol A: Human Biomonitoring, Toxicity, Detection and Treatment in the Environment

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is a known endocrine disruptor employed in a range of consumer products and has been predominantly found in different environments through industrial processes and in human samples. In this review, we aimed to summarize published scientific evidence on human biomonitoring, toxic effects and mode of action of TBBPA in humans. Interestingly, an overview of various pretreatment methods, emerging detection methods, and treatment methods was elucidated. Studies on exposure routes in humans, a combination of detection methods, adsorbent-based treatments and degradation of TBBPA are in the preliminary phase and have several limitations. Therefore, in-depth studies on these subjects should be considered to enhance the accurate body load of non-invasive matrix, external exposure levels, optimal design of combined detection techniques, and degrading technology of TBBPA. Overall, this review will improve the scientific comprehension of TBBPA in humans as well as the environment, and the breakthrough for treating waste products containing TBBPA.

Effects and mechanisms of decabromodiphenyl ethane on Chlorella sorokiniana: Transcriptomics, proteins and fatty acid production

Decabromodiphenyl ethane is a novel brominated flame retardant, that has always been dissolved in organic solvents to explore its activities on aquatic organisms. In this study, the influences of decabromodiphenyl ethane on the microalga Chlorella sorokiniana (C. sorokiniana) were studied, and three microalgae treatments, including decabromodiphenyl ethane dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide solvent (DBDPE treatment), dimethyl sulfoxide alone (control II) or untreated (control I) were used in the experiment, respectively. The results showed that the growth of C. sorokiniana was remarkably enhanced in the DBDPE treatment compared with the control I and II groups. Conjoint analysis of transcriptomics and quantitative proteome displayed that the upregulated differentially expressed genes and proteins of DBDPE:control I were enriched in 6 pathways, and downregulated genes/proteins of DBDPE:control I were enriched in 3 pathways. The upregulated differentially expressed genes and proteins of DBDPE:control II were enriched in 4 pathways, and downregulated genes/proteins of DBDPE:control II were enriched in 6 pathways. In addition, decabromodiphenyl ethane changed the fatty acid concentration in C. sorokiniana cells. The activities of superoxide dismutase were enhanced when C. sorokiniana were treated by decabromodiphenyl ethane. The data highlighted that the mRNA and protein expression relating to the fatty acid production, of C. sorokiniana were significantly affected by decabromodiphenyl ethane, and decabromodiphenyl ethane pollution changed the physiological metabolism of microalgae and had harmful effects on natural environments.

Radiolytic degradation of BDE-209 in rice-vegetable rotation soils induced by electron beam irradiation

Deca-brominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209) is shown to be persistent in soil and it's urgent to find an effective method to remove BDE-209 from contaminated soil. In this study, the investigation of BDE-209 degradation in three different rice-vegetable rotation soils induced by electron beam (E-beam) irradiation under flooded and non-flooded conditions was conducted. The reductive efficiency of ¹⁴C-BDE209 reached the highest level at 50 kGy and the values in flooded soils of rice-eggplant rotation soil (RES), rice-peanut soil (RPS), and rice-chili pepper soil (RCS) were 93.5%, 87.2%, and 73.8%, respectively. The reductive efficiencies in non-flooded soils of RES, RPS, and RCS were 73.4%, 81.0%, and 78%, respectively. The D_0.5 values (dose required for reducing 50% BDE-209) of BDE-209 in non-flooded soils were lower than those in flooded soils, suggesting greater degradation efficiency of BDE-209 in non-flooded soils than in flooded soils. The BDE-209 was degraded into higher-brominated PBDEs and lower-brominated PBDEs by E-beam irradiation. The results demonstrate that BDE-209 in the soil can be degraded by E-beam irradiation, non-flooded condition is better than flooded condition for the removal of BDE-209, and the main degradation mechanism of BDE-209 by E-beam irradiation is debromination. This study provides a rapid and effective method for degrading BDE-209 that is persistent in soils, and has important implications for the remediation of soil contaminated by PBDEs in and around E-waste dismantling areas.

Global distribution and trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in human blood and breast milk: A quantitative meta-analysis of studies published in the period 2000-2019

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of flame-retardants that are found throughout the human body. However, global trends and diversity of the concentrations in human body and the potential risks remain largely unresolved. Based on published data during 2000-2019, we conducted a systematic meta-analysis to understand the burden and risks of PBDEs in humans and their spatiotemporal variations. The report provides a global picture of PBDE concentrations in human blood and breast milk. We found the levels of body PBDE burden in the North American population were higher than those from Asia and Europe. However, high concentrations of blood PBDEs in occupational population from Asia were observed, largely because of poorly controlled e-waste recycling operations. Penta- and deca-BDE were the main contributors in North America and Asia, respectively, reflecting the difference in the production and use of these chemicals. On a global scale, no substantial decreases in the concentrations of PBDEs in the blood and breast milk were observed, although most of the chemicals have been phased out. The results suggested that humans will be exposed to PBDEs with relatively high concentrations in a certain period because of the legacy in products and the environmental media. And the potential health risks necessitate careful study in the future. Our results also remind that the uses of degradation-resistant chemicals should be attached great importance to their safety.

Transportation and degradation of decabrominated diphenyl ether in sequential anoxic and oxic crop rotation

This work evaluated the debromination and uptake of ¹⁴C-labeled BDE-209 in rice cultivars grown in anoxic soil for 120 days (d) followed by cultivation of vegetables (peanut, eggplant and pepper) in oxic soil (120 d). Degradation of BDE-209 to lower polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) occurred in cultivated soils, and more metabolites were released in oxic soil than in anoxic soil. The crop rotation from anoxic to oxic greatly enhanced the dissipation of BDE-209 in the soil (P < 0.05), in which the dissipation in anoxic soil planted with Huanghuazhan (HHZ, indica) and Yudao 1 (YD1, indica) were 6.8% and 2.4%, respectively, while in oxic soil with peanut and pepper were increased to 25.8% and 21.7%, respectively. The crop rotation also enhanced the degradation of BDE-209 in the soil, the recovered BDE-209 in soil after 120 d anoxic incubation with YD1 was 81.1%, but it decreased to 47.8% and 45.8% after another 120 d oxic incubation. Bioconcentration factors were between 0.23 and 0.36 for rice, eggplant and pepper but reached to 0.5 in peanut, which contains more lipids in the edible portion than the other test crops. The estimated daily intake for vegetables was 0.01-0.07 μg BDE-209-equivalent kg^-1 bw day^-1, which is at least two orders of magnitude below the maximum acceptable oral dose (7 μg kg^-1 bw day^-1). Our work confirms that crop rotation from rice to vegetable enhanced the dissipation and debromination of BDE-209 in the soil, and indicate that sequential anoxic-oxic rotation practice is considered to be effective in remediation of environmental pollutants.

Effects of Decabromodiphenyl Ether and Elevated Carbon Dioxide on Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

We assessed the effects of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209, 0, 3 and 30 mg/kg) on rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Wuyunjing) in field free-air CO₂ enrichment system. Rice at elevated (580 ppm) CO₂ had increased net photosynthetic rate, intercellular CO₂ concentration, shoot biomass, yield and phosphorus content in grains. However, there were no significant changes in such parameters observed on rice at elevated CO₂ combined with BDE-209 (3 and 30 mg/kg). Elevated CO₂ alone had no significant effects on sugar or starch content in rice grains, whereas its combination with BDE-209 (3 mg/kg) significantly decreased grain sugar and starch content. In conclusion, rice reared in soil polluted by BDE-209 under elevated CO₂ modulates the effects in grain feature.

Fate of lower-brominated diphenyl ethers (LBDEs) in a red soil - Application of 14C-labelling

Lower-brominated diphenyl ethers (LBDEs) occur ubiquitously in soil, however their fate there has not been well evaluated, mainly owing to that the unavailability of commercial radioactively labelled LBDE congeners hampers the investigation on fate of LBDEs in the environment with complex matrixes, such as soil and sediment. Here, we successfully synthesized three congeners of LBDEs, i.e., 4-bromodiphenyl ether (BDE3), 4,4'-dibromodiphenyl ether (BDE15), and 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE47), with ¹⁴C-labelling on one aromatic ring, starting from commercially available ¹⁴C-labelled phenol in two steps with high yields and high radiochemical purities. Using the ¹⁴C-labelled congeners, we studied the fate of LBDEs in a red soil under oxic conditions, where LBDEs have been frequently detected in high levels. The major fate of the LBDE congeners in the soil was formation of NERs, followed by mineralization to CO₂, while no transformation product was detected in the soil after incubation for 105 days. The mineralization strongly decreased with increasing number of the bromine atom on the congener molecule, amounting to 10.4 ± 0.3%, 2.45 ± 0.04%, and 0.51 ± 0.05% for BDE3, BDE15, and BDE47, respectively, at the end of incubation, while mineralization rate constant was independent of the molecular structure, suggesting that solubility of LBDEs is the limit factor for their persistence in soil. The mineralization was positively linearly correlated with the formation of NERs (22.5 ± 1.9%, 11.0 ± 3.6%, and 6.7 ± 2.7% for BDE3, BDE15, and BDE47, respectively), which was mainly located in humin fraction and formed also in sterilized soil, suggesting a binding of transformation intermediates to soil humic substances and a physico-chemical entrapment of LBDEs in soil. The results provide new insights into fate of LBDE congeners in soil, and suggest a need to elucidate nature of the NERs of LBDEs, especially the stability of NERs in the environment.

Uptake and transformation of decabromodiphenyl ether in different rice cultivars: Evidence from a carbon-14 study

The differences of PBDE absorption, accumulation, and metabolism in different cultivars of the same crop are rarely explored. This study used ¹⁴C tracing to fully demonstrate the uptake and transformation of soil-borne BDE209 in three rice cultivars, including two indica (HHZ and YD1) and one japonica cultivars (NJ3). Results showed that about 6.9, 17.2, and 17.4% of the applied ¹⁴C-BDE209 were transformed to ¹⁴C-metabolites in soils planted with HHZ, YD1, and NJ3, respectively. The ¹⁴C-BDE209 and its ¹⁴C-metabolites in soil could be absorbed by the rice and gradually transported to its root, stem, leaf, and grain, with the total whole-plant uptake of 8.52, 4.55 and 3.43 nmol for HHZ, YD1, and NJ3, respectively. The cultivar of HHZ had the greatest whole-plant ¹⁴C absorption but the lowest ΣPBDEs residues in its grain, with the ΣPBDEs of 421.8, 454.2 and 967.0 ng g^-1 for HHZ, YD1, and NJ3, respectively. BDE-209 accounted for 90%, 31% and 50% of the ΣPBDEs in the grain from HHZ, YD1, and NJ3, respectively. The estimated daily intake (EDI) amounts of ΣPBDEs were 928, 1056, and 2675 ng kg^-1 bw d^-1 via consuming rice grains from HHZ, YD1, and NJ3, respectively, which were below the safe threshold limits for human consumption. This study proved the different BDE-209 absorption, accumulation and transformation in different rice cultivars, which potentially suggests the need of considering cultivar differences in assessing the dietary risks of PBDEs.

Fate and adverse effects of hexabromocyclododecane diastereoisomers (HBCDDs) in a soil-ryegrass pot system

This study explored the fate and adverse effects of 3 main hexabromocyclododecane diastereoisomers (α-, β-, and γ-HBCDDs) in a soil pot system planted with ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) using a short-term (8 weeks) experiment. At the end of the experiment, soil urease activity in planted spiked soil increased and catalase activity decreased; while there was no obvious change in sucrase and peroxidase activities. HBCDDs mainly accumulated in the root of ryegrass, with root concentration factors (RCF) in the range of 1.46-4.43 and only a small part was transferred to the stem (SCF: 0.198-0.305) and leaf (LCF: 0.042-0.062). The concentration factors varied for different HBCDD diastereoisomers, being in the order of α- > β- > γ-HBCDD for all tissues, indicating preferential accumulation of α-HBCDD in ryegrass tissues. Moreover, the enantiomeric analysis revealed an enrichment of (+)-α-, (-)-β- and (+)-γ-HBCDD enantiomers in ryegrass tissues. β- and γ-HBCDDs (up to 1.90% and 4.11%, respectively) were transformed to aα-HBCDD in ryegrass, while no isomerization product from α-HBCDD was found. Hydroxylated HBCDDs metabolites, such as monoOHHBCDDs and diOHHBCDDs were found in ryegrass tissues for the first time.

Removal of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) using a combined system involving TiO2 photocatalysis and wetland plants

There is a rising concern about the capability of sewage treatment works in treating emerging chemicals, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). A combined photocatalysis (TiO₂ and visible light) and constructed wetland system (planted with Oryza sativa (rice cultivar: Hefengzhan) and Phragmites australis (common reed)) was designed to study PBDEs removal efficiencies. After the pre-treatment in TiO₂ suspension, the artificially BDE-209 spiked sewage (78.2 and 782nmol/L) was discharged into the sub-surface flow constructed wetland tanks planted with rice and common reed, respectively. The treated sewage, soil, plant roots, shoots, rice grains and hulls were collected and analyzed for PBDEs by GC-MS. The removals of BDE-209 in the combined systems (93.6±2.19% (78.2nmol/L) and 92.1±1.11% (782nmol/L)) were significantly higher than those in the photocatalytic systems (56.3±5.78% (78.2nmol/L) and 54.7±9.47% (782nmol/L)), which could be explained by the enhanced biodegradability of PBDEs in photocatalysis, led to its better dissipation by rice plants. Therefore, this combined system might help to degrade BDE-209 in the wastewater effluent, reducing its potential entry into aquatic food chains.

Effects of Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles on phytotoxicity and translocation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in contaminated soil

In vivo studies of the interactions of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in plants have generally focused on uptake, translocation, metabolism and accumulation, but there were limited reports about the phytotoxicity and translocation of PBDEs in contaminated soil with the effects of nanoparticles. In this study, the effects of Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles on translocation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in contaminated soil and its phytotoxicity to Chinese cabbage were investigated by soil culture experiments. The results showed that the plant biomass, germination rate, and shoot and root lengths of treated soil (S-5) increased by 0.0044 g, 15%, and 5 and 6 mm, respectively, compared with untreated soil (S-2B). The average Ni and Fe contents of the edible parts(stem and leaf) of the S-5 sample, which contained 0.03 g/g Ni/Fe and 10 mg/kg BDE209, were measured at 1.71 and 184 mg/kg, respectively. The superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase activities in the S-5 sample decreased by 12%, 6.1% and 5.9%, respectively, while compared with the S-2B sample. In all treatments, the contents of BDE209 and the total PBDEs in sample S-5 were lowest, suggesting that the fresh Ni/Fe nanoparticles had higher toxicity than that of the aged nanoparticles. And the lower brominated PBDEs (tri-to nona-) were detected in samples, indicating uptake, debromination and/or metabolism of PBDEs existed in plants. The phytotoxicity and translocation of BDE209 in the contaminated soil decreased as a result of the effects of the Ni/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles.

Transformation of hydroxylated and methoxylated 2,2',4,4',5-brominated diphenyl ether (BDE-99) in plants

The occurrence and fate of hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) and methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (MeO-PBDEs) have received significant attention. However, there is limited information on the metabolism relationship between OH-pentaBDEs and MeO-pentaBDEs that were frequently detected with relatively high concentrations in the environment. In this study, the biotransformation between OH-BDE-99 and MeO-BDE-99 was investigated in rice, wheat, and soybean plants. All the three plants can metabolize OH-BDE-99 to corresponding homologous methoxylated metabolites, while the transformation from MeO-BDE-99 to OH-BDE-99 could only be found in soybean. The conversion of parent compounds was the highest in soybean, followed by wheat and rice. Transformation products were found mainly in the roots, with few metabolites being translocated to the shoots and solution after exposure. The results of this study provide valuable information for a better understanding of the accumulation and transformation of OH-PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs in different plants.

Probing the debromination of the flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ether in sediments of a boreal lake

After decades of use of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) as flame retardants, a large reservoir of these toxins has accumulated in ecosystems worldwide. The present study used an innovative approach to examine whether the fully brominated PBDE decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE) degrades to more toxic congeners in aquatic environments. The authors incubated intact sediment microcosms with high-purity [(13)C]decaBDE in a remote boreal lake to assess its debromination under ambient conditions. Although the addition of [(13)C]decaBDE increased total PBDE concentrations in sediment more than 10-fold, the relative amount of [(13)C]decaBDE in sediment did not change significantly over a 1-mo incubation. However, observation of small quantities of lower-brominated [(13)C]BDEs lent support to the hypothesis that decaBDE is slowly debrominated. The authors observed a significant increase in octaBDEs and nonaBDEs in profundal, but not littoral, sediment over 30 d. A second experiment in which sediment was incubated under different light and oxygen regimes yielded a surprising result-oxygen significantly stimulated the formation of octaBDEs and nonaBDEs. The authors also conducted a large-scale in situ enclosure experiment in which they followed the fate of experimentally added decaBDE in sediment over 26 mo, but that study yielded little evidence of decaBDE debromination. Overall, the authors suggest that the debromination of decaBDE occurs very slowly, if at all, in natural sediment of boreal lakes, in contrast to the rapid degradation kinetics reported by most laboratory-based studies, which are usually conducted by dissolving decaBDE in organic solvents. The findings reinforce the need for field studies on contaminant fate to inform environmental policy decisions.

Pollution profiles and risk assessment of PBDEs and phenolic brominated flame retardants in water environments within a typical electronic waste dismantling region

The aim of this study was to assess the pollution profiles of various typical brominated flame retardants in water and surface sediment near a typical electronic waste dismantling region in southern China. We found that polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP), pentabromophenol (PeBP), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and bisphenol A (BPA) were ubiquitous in the water and sediment samples collected in the study region. In water, Σ19PBDEs (sum of all 20 PBDE congeners studied except BDE-209, which was below the detection limit) levels ranged from 0.31 to 8.9 × 10(2) ng L(-1). TBP, PeBP, TBBPA, and BPA concentrations in the water samples ranged from not being detectable (nd-under the detection limit) to 3.2 × 10(2) (TBP), from nd to 37 (PeBP), from nd to 9.2 × 10(2) (TBBPA) and from nd-8.6 × 10(2) ng L(-1) (BPA). In sediment, Σ19PBDEs ranged from nd to 5.6 × 10(3) ng g(-1), while BDE-209 was the predominant congener, with a range of nd to 3.5 × 10(3) ng g(-1). Tri- to hepta-BDE concentrations were significantly (p < 0.01) correlated with each other, except for BDE-71 and BDE-183, and octa- to nona-BDEs concentrations were significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with each other, except for BDE-208. BDE-209 was not significantly correlated with tri- to nona-BDEs. Risk assessments indicated that the water and sediment across the sampling sites posed no estrogenic risk. However, different eco-toxicity risk degrees at three trophic levels did exist at most sampling sites.

Integrated field lysimetry and porewater sampling for evaluation of chemical mobility in soils and established vegetation

Potentially toxic chemicals are routinely applied to land to meet growing demands on waste management and food production, but the fate of these chemicals is often not well understood. Here we demonstrate an integrated field lysimetry and porewater sampling method for evaluating the mobility of chemicals applied to soils and established vegetation. Lysimeters, open columns made of metal or plastic, are driven into bareground or vegetated soils. Porewater samplers, which are commercially available and use vacuum to collect percolating soil water, are installed at predetermined depths within the lysimeters. At prearranged times following chemical application to experimental plots, porewater is collected, and lysimeters, containing soil and vegetation, are exhumed. By analyzing chemical concentrations in the lysimeter soil, vegetation, and porewater, downward leaching rates, soil retention capacities, and plant uptake for the chemical of interest may be quantified. Because field lysimetry and porewater sampling are conducted under natural environmental conditions and with minimal soil disturbance, derived results project real-case scenarios and provide valuable information for chemical management. As chemicals are increasingly applied to land worldwide, the described techniques may be utilized to determine whether applied chemicals pose adverse effects to human health or the environment.
