Abstract
Atmospheric amines are thought to play significant roles in the nucleation of sulfuric acid-mediated aerosol particles. Their enhancing effects on the stabilization of the related complexes have formerly been correlated with the amine base strength, but there are a few exceptions reported. In this work, the influence of seven alkylamines on the thermodynamic stability of sulfuric acid-amine complexes has been theoretically investigated, e.g., ethylamine, propylamine, isopropylamine, tert-butylamine, dimethylamine, ethylmethylamine, and trimethylamine. For all primary and secondary amine-mediated complexes, a dual hydrogen bond configuration is generally suggested in the most stable isomer. The stabilization of this special structure predicted by the electrostatic potential distribution on the molecular surface of amines exactly agrees with the base strength sequence, providing crucial evidence for the previous deduction of correlation between the base strength and the enhancing effect. Meanwhile, the considerable van der Waals interactions are found between the free hydroxyl of sulfuric acid and the β-methyl group of amine, resulting in the extra stability for sulfuric acid-dimethylamine and sulfuric acid-ethylmethylamine complexes. Therefore, the electrostatic potential distribution of amines is the essential determinant factor for the thermodynamic stability of the relevant complexes. Our conclusions provide new insight into a way to evaluate the enhancing abilities of amines in aerosol particle nucleation.

Abstract
Organosulfates (OSs) derived from biogenic volatile organic compounds are important compounds signifying interactions between anthropogenic sulfur pollution and natural emission. In this work, we substantially expand the OS standard library through the chemical synthesis of 26 α-hydroxy OS standards from eight monoterpenes (i.e., α- and β-pinene, limonene, sabinene, Δ3-carene, terpinolene, and α- and γ-terpinene) and two sesquiterpenes (i.e., α-humulene and β-caryophyllene). The sulfation of unsymmetrically substituted 1,2-diol intermediates produced a regioisomeric mixture of two OSs. The major regioisomeric OSs were isolated and purified for full NMR characterization, while the minor regioisomers could only be determined by liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (MS). The tandem mass spectra of the molecular ion formed through electrospray ionization confirmed the formation of abundant bisulfate ion fragments (m/z 97) and certain minor ion fragments characteristic of the carbon backbone. A knowledge of the MS/MS spectra and chromatographic retention times for authentic standards allows us to identify α-hydroxy OSs derived from six monoterpenes and β-caryophyllene in ambient samples. Notably, among two possible regioisomers of α-hydroxy OSs, we only detected the isomers with the sulfate group at the less substituted carbon position derived from α-pinene, limonene, sabinene, Δ3-carene, and terpinolene in the ambient samples. This observation sheds light on the atmospheric OS formation mechanisms.

Abstract
Aromatic acids, which are generated from numerous anthropogenic emissions and secondary transformations, have been considered to play a crucial role in new particle formation. In this study, we performed theoretical calculations at the PW91PW91/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level to investigate the interaction between typical aromatic acids namely benzoic acid (BA), phenylacetic acid (PAA), phthalic acid (PA), isophthalic acid (mPA), and terephthalic acid (PTA) and common atmospheric nucleation precursors namely sulfuric acid (SA), water (H2O), ammonia (NH3), methylamine (MA), dimethylamine (DMA), and trimethylamine (TMA). The geometric analysis, Gibbs free energy analysis, OH/NH-stretching vibrational frequency calculation, and atoms in molecules (AIM) analysis were conducted to determine the interactions in the complexes. The heterodimers formed a six to eight membered ring through four types of hydrogen bond, and the bond strength could be ranked in descending order: SO-H⋯O > O-H⋯O/N > N-H⋯O. The BA/PAA/mPA/PTA-SA complexes had the lowest Gibbs free energy values. PA was more likely to interact with NH3 or amines rather than SA due to an intra-molecular hydrogen bond. Additionally, the aromatic acids have similar ability to interact with SA and NH3 as monocarboxylic/dicarboxylic acid. The formation potential of the heterodimers from aromatic acids with common nucleation precursors in ambient atmosphere was investigated.

Abstract
By theoretical calculations, the gas-phase SO2 hydration reaction assisted by methylamine (MA) and dimethylamine (DMA) was investigated, and the potential contribution of the hydrated product to new particle formation (NPF) also was evaluated. The results show that the energy barrier for aliphatic amines (MA and DMA) assisted SO2 hydration reaction is lower than the corresponding that of water and ammonia assisted SO2 hydration. In these hydration reactions, nearly barrierless reaction (only a barrier of 0.1 kcal mol-1) can be found in the case of SO2 + 2H2O + DMA. These lead us to conclude that the SO2 hydration reaction assisted by MA and DMA is energetically facile. The temporal evolution for hydrated products (CH3NH3+-HSO3--H2O or (CH3)2NH2+-HSO3--H2O) in molecular dynamics simulations indicates that these complexes can self-aggregate into bigger clusters and can absorb water and amine molecules, which means that these hydrated products formed by the hydration reaction may serve as a condensation nucleus to initiate the NPF.

Abstract
Monoterpenes, a major class of biogenic volatile organic compounds, are known to produce oxidation products that further react with sulfate to form organosulfates. The accurate quantification of monoterpene-derived organosulfates (OSs) is necessary for quantifying this controllable aerosol source; however, it has been hampered by a lack of authentic standards. Here we report a unified synthesis strategy starting from the respective monoterpene through Upjohn dihydroxylation or Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation followed by monosulfation with the sulfur trioxide-pyridine complex. We demonstrate the successful synthesis of four monoterpene-derived OS compounds, including α-pinene OS, β-pinene OS, limonene OS, and limonaketone OS. Quantification of OSs is commonly achieved using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) by either monitoring the [M-H]- ion or through multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) of mass transitions between the [M-H]- and m/z 97 ions. Comparison between the synthesized standards and previously adopted quantification surrogates reveals that camphor-10-sulfonic acid is a better quantification surrogate using [M-H]- as the quantification ion, while the highly compound-specific nature of MRM quantification makes it difficult to choose a suitable surrogate. Both could be rationalized in accordance to their respective MS quantification mechanisms. The in-house availability of the authentic standards enables us to discover that β-pinene OS, due to the sulfate group at the primary carbon, partially degrades to a dehydrogenated OS compound during LC/MS analysis and a hydroperoxy OS over a prolonged storage period (>5 month) and forms a regioisomer through intermolecular isomerization. Limonene OS was positively identified for the first time in ambient samples and found to be more abundant than α-/β-pinene OS in the Pearl River Delta, China. This work highlights the critical importance of having authentic standards in advancing our understanding of the interactions between biogenic VOC emissions and anthropogenic sulfur pollution.

Abstract
The oxidation of SO2 is commonly regarded as a major driver for new particle formation (NPF) in the atmosphere. In this study, we explored the connection between measured mixing ratio of SO2 and observed long-term (duration>3 hr) and short-term (duration<1.5 hr) NPF events at a semi-urban site in Toronto. Apparent NPF rates (J30) showed a moderate correlation with the concentration of sulfuric acid ([H2SO4]) calculated from the measured mixing ratio of SO2 in long-term NPF events and some short-term NPF events (Category I) (R2=0.66). The exponent in the fitting line of J30~[H2SO4]n in these events was 1.6. It was also found that SO2 mixing ratios varied a lot during long-term NPF events, leading to a significant variation of new particle counts. In the SO2-unexplained short-term NPF events (Category II), analysis showed that new particles were formed aloft and then mixed down to the ground level. Further calculation results showed that sulfuric acid oxidized from SO2 probably made a negligible contribution to the growth of >10 nm new particles.

Abstract
Biogenic organosulfates (OSs) are important markers of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation involving cross reactions of biogenic precursors (terpenoids) with anthropogenic pollutants. Until now, there has been rare information about biogenic OSs in the air of highly polluted areas. In this study, fine particle (PM2.5) samples were separately collected in daytime and nighttime from summer to fall 2010 at a site in the central Pearl River Delta (PRD), South China. Pinene-derived nitrooxy-organosulfates (pNOSs) and isoprene-derived OSs (iOSs) were quantified using a liquid chromatograph (LC) coupled with a tandem mass spectrometer (MS/MS) operated in negative electrospray ionization (ESI) mode. The pNOSs with MW 295 exhibited higher levels in fall (151 ± 86.9 ng m(-3)) than summer (52.4 ± 34.0 ng m(-3)), probably owing to the elevated levels of NOx and sulfate in fall when air masses mainly passed through city clusters in the PRD and biomass burning was enhanced. In contrast to observations elsewhere where higher levels occurred at nighttime, pNOS levels in the PRD were higher during the daytime in both seasons, indicating that pNOS formation was likely driven by photochemistry over the PRD. This conclusion is supported by several lines of evidence: the specific pNOS which could be formed through both daytime photochemistry and nighttime NO3 chemistry exhibited no day-night variation in abundance relative to other pNOS isomers; the production of the hydroxynitrate that is the key precursor for this specific pNOS was found to be significant through photochemistry but negligible through NO3 chemistry based on the mechanisms in the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM). For iOSs, 2-methyltetrol sulfate ester which could be formed from isoprene-derived epoxydiols (IEPOX) under low-NOx conditions showed low concentrations (below the detection limit to 2.09 ng m(-3)), largely due to the depression of IEPOX formation by the high NOx levels over the PRD.

Abstract
The Nano Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (NAMS) was deployed to rural/coastal and urban sites to measure the composition of 20-25 nm diameter nanoparticles during new particle formation (NPF). NAMS provides a quantitative measure of the elemental composition of individual, size-selected nanoparticles. In both environments, particles analyzed during NPF were found to be enhanced in elements associated with inorganic species (nitrogen, sulfur) relative to that associated with organic species (carbon). A molecular apportionment algorithm was applied to the elemental data in order to place the elemental composition into a molecular context. These measurements show that sulfate constitutes a substantial fraction of total particle mass in both environments. The contribution of sulfuric acid to new particle growth was quantitatively determined and the gas-phase sulfuric acid concentration required to incorporate the measured sulfate fraction was calculated. The calculated values were compared to those calculated by a sulfuric acid proxy that considers solar radiation and SO(2) levels. The two values agree within experimental uncertainty. Sulfate accounts for 29-46% of the total mass growth of particles. Other species contributing to growth include ammonium, nitrate, and organics. For each location, the relative amounts of these species do not change significantly with growth rate. However, for the coastal location, sulfate contribution increases with increasing temperature whereas nitrate contribution decreases with increasing temperature.
