Abstract
The hexaazamacrocycle 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaazacyclooctadecane, [18]ane-N6, forms mono- and dinuclear derivatives with copper chloride depending on the reaction stoichiometries and times. The mononuclear derivative, [Cu([18]ane-N6)]Cl2.H2O, presents the macrocycle wrapped around the metal atom in a distorted octahedral coordinative environment, while the dinuclear derivative, [Cu2([18]ane-N6)Cl2]Cl2.4H2O, is formed by a central Cu2Cl2 core surrounded by an almost planar macrocycle. The crystal structure of both derivatives is stabilized by a network of hydrogen bonds involving the amine macrocyclic groups, the chloride anions, and the crystallization water molecules. The copper atoms in the dinuclear derivative show a strong antiferromagnetic coupling, as expected for the crystal structure parameters. A mononuclear nickel derivative has also been obtained from nickel nitrate by following the same synthetic procedure. These compounds react with TCNQ salts with formation of two types of derivatives, [M([18]ane-N6)](TCNQ)2 and [M([18]ane-N6)](TCNQ)4, depending on the use of radical-anionic or mixed-valence TCNQ salts in the reaction. The crystal structures of the nickel derivatives show that the former derivatives are built up by macrocyclic metal cations surrounded by dimeric dianions (TCNQ)22-, either isolated or stacked along the crystal. The derivative with four TCNQ units/formula consists of alternated chains of metallomacrocyclic cations and stacked TCNQ anions. The crystal parameters suggest that every TCNQ holds approximately 0.5 electrons and overlaps with a neighboring unit to form dimeric monoanions, (TCNQ)2-.

Abstract
Ultrathin separation membranes were prepared upon alternating electrostatic adsorption of 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaazacyclooctadecane (18-azacrown-6, hexacyclen, aza6) and polyvinylsulfate on porous polyacrylonitrile/polyethylene terephthalate (PAN/PET) substrates. The resulting composite membranes were highly permeable for electrolyte solutions, but the selectivity in ion transport was poor (alpha(Cl-/SO42-) = 2). However, after a treatment of the membrane with 0.1 M aqueous copper(II) acetate solution, the rejection of divalent anions was strongly enhanced. Separation factors alpha(Cl-/SO42-) = 110 and alpha(Cl-/SO32-) = 1420 were found. Spectroscopic studies indicate a highly specific complex formation of aza6 and copper acetate in the membrane. Treatment of the membranes with cobalt(II) and nickel(II) acetate also led to an enhancement of the separation factors, but the effect was much smaller. Detailed studies of the influence of the pH of the dipping solutions and number of deposited bilayers are also reported. A model is presented describing the origin of the high transport selectivity.

Abstract
A novel Cu(II)2 complex of the [18]ane-N6 macrocycle ([18]ane-N6 = 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaazacyclooctadecane) was prepared from the reaction between [18]ane-N6 and Cu(II) salts such as Cu(NO3)2 and Cu(OAc)2. A structural study of the complex derived from Cu(OAc)2 (1) revealed a Cu(II)2 core encircled by a [18]ane-N6 ligand and two mu-O-OAc ligands. The facile replacement of mu-O-OAc by a phosphate monoester [PO3(OR)2-] yielded a number of bis(phosphate monoester)dicopper complexes with ROPO3(2-) as hydrogen phosphate (HPO4(2-), 3a), phenyl phosphate [PO3(OPh)2-, 3b], glycerol 2-phosphate [PO3(OCH(CH2OH)2)2-, 3c], alpha-d-gluocose phosphate [PO3(C6H11O6)2-, 3d], and dl-alpha-glycerol phosphate [PO3(OCH2CHOHCH2OH)2-, 3e]. Structural studies of compounds 3a-d confirmed both the retention of the Cu2{[18]ane-N6} core and a mu-O-PO3(OR) coordination mode. Displacement of acetate by a phosphate monoester in an aqueous solution was accompanied by a significant change in the visible absorption, which enables the establishment of relative association constants of PO3(OR)2- on the order of 10(4) in the unbuffered solution and 10(3) in the buffered solution (HEPES). Measurement of the magnetic susceptibility of compound 3a over the temperature range of 5-300 K and subsequent modeling revealed a weak antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -1.1 cm(-1)) between two Cu(II) centers.

Abstract
The phosphorescence and photochemical behavior of the macrocyclic complexes (1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaazacyclooctadecane)chromium(III) (Cr([18]-aneN(6))(3+); 1) and (4,4',4''-ethylidynetris(3-azabutan-1-amine)) chromium(III) (Cr(sen)(3+); 2) have been compared to each other and to the complex Cr(en)(3)(3+). For both macrocyclic complexes, phosphorescence from room temperature aqueous solutions is too weak to be observed, contrasting with Cr(en)(3)(3+), though both had somewhat longer 77 K lifetimes than Cr(en)(3)(3+). Phosphorescence lifetimes for these macrocyclics decreased with increasing temperature much faster than for Cr(en)(3)(3+) and a conventional extrapolation based on a fit of reciprocal lifetimes (corrected for the low-temperature contribution) to the Arrhenius equation gave estimated room temperature phosphorescence lifetimes of a few nanoseconds, consistent with the failure to observe room temperature emission. Fitting of the nonlinearity of the data seen in these plots suggested that two high-temperature processes were occurring with estimated activation parameters (E in kJ mol(-1) and A in s(-1)) for Cr([18]-aneN(6))(3+): E(1) = 40, A(1) = 1 x 10(16); E(2) = 24, A(2) = 1 x 10(14): Cr(sen)(3+); E(1) = 45, A(1) = 2 x 10(15); E(2) = 29, A(2) = 7 x 10(11). Cr([18]-aneN(6))(3+) was photochemically inert on irradiation. On irradiation into the lowest quartet ligand field absorption band, Cr(sen)(3+) photolyzes with a quantum yield of 0.098 +/- 0.001 at room temperature. Laser flash photolysis with conductivity detection showed that this photoreaction occurred faster than protonation of the liberated amine ligand at all practical proton concentrations. The quantum yield for irradiation directly into the doublet absorption band of Cr(sen)(3+) was 0.077 +/- 0.003. Photoaquation of Delta-Cr(sen)(3+) led to loss of optical activity and product analysis by capillary electrophoresis showed that both racemic and Delta-Cr(sen)(3+) photoaquate to a single main product, trans-Cr(sen-NH)(H(2)O)(4+). The product stereochemistry is shown to be consistent with predictions based on the angular overlap model for Cr(III) photochemistry, recognizing the additional constraints imposed by the ligand. The abnormally short room temperature solution lifetime of the doublet state is a result of a radiation-less process that competes with other processes depleting the doublet state. However, this doublet-state deactivation process does not lead to photoaquation but competes with BISC and photoaquation via the quartet state, resulting in an unprecedented reduction in photoaquation quantum yield on direct irradiation into the doublet state.
