Abstract
Three, PO4 3-/HPO4 2- and AsO4 3--incorporated, new tetranuclear complexes of copper(II) and zinc(II) ions have been synthesized and fully characterized. In methanol-water, reactions of H3cpdp (H3cpdp = N,N'-Bis[2-carboxybenzomethyl]-N,N'-Bis[2-pyridylmethyl]-1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol) with copper(II) chloride in the presence of either NaOH/Na2HPO4·2H2O or KOH/Na2HAsO4·7H2O lead to the isolation of the tetranuclear complexes Na3[Cu4(cpdp)2(μ4-PO4)](OH)2·14H2O (1) and K2[Cu4(cpdp)2(μ4-AsO4)](OH)·162/3H2O (2), respectively. Similarly, the reaction of H3cpdp with zinc(II) chloride in the presence of NaOH/Na2HPO4·2H2O yields a tetranuclear complex, Na(H3O)2[Zn4(cpdp)2(μ4-HPO4)]Cl3·121/2H2O (3). All complexes are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and other analytical techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared and UV-vis spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and electrochemical studies. The solid-state molecular framework of each complex contains two monocationic [M2(cpdp)]+ (M = Cu, Zn) units, which are exclusively coordinated to either phosphate/hydrogen phosphate or arsenate groups in a unique mode. All three complexes exhibit a μ4:η1:η1:η1:η1 bridging mode of the PO4 3-/HPO4 2-/AsO4 3- groups, with each bridging among four metal ions. The thermal properties of all three complexes have been investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. Low-temperature magnetic studies of complexes 1 and 2 disclose moderate antiferromagnetic interactions mediated among the copper centers through alkoxide and phosphate/arsenate bridges. Electrochemical studies of complexes 1 and 2 in dimethylformamide using cyclic voltammetry reveal the presence of a fairly assessable one-electron metal-based irreversible reduction and one quasireversible oxidation couple.

Abstract
A binuclear Cu(II) compound [Cu2(bpa)2(P2O7)(H2O)2]·2.5H2O, 1, (bpa = 2,2'-bipyridylamine), with pairs of Cu(II) ions bridged by one pyrophosphate tetra-anion, was synthesized and crystallized. Its triclinic structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of single crystal samples of 1 were recorded for a fixed orientation of the magnetic field (B0) as a function of temperature (T) between 4.7 and 293 K, and at T = 4.7, 50 and 293 K, as a function of the orientation of B0. Below ∼8 K, the spectra are assigned to two types of mononuclear crystal defects hyperfine-coupled to one copper and two nitrogen nuclei. The g-matrices and hyperfine couplings at these T provide information about the structures of these defects. Above 10 K, the spectrum is dominated by the response of the bulk binuclear Cu(II) material, showing hyperfine interactions with two copper nuclei, collapsing to a single peak above 18 K when the units are magnetically connected, and the magnetic behaviour becomes 3D. We attribute the results above 10 K to the interplay of an AFM intrabinuclear exchange interaction J0 = -28(3) cm(-1) (defined as Hex = -J0S1·S2), and three orders of magnitude weaker exchange coupling with average magnitude |J1| ≥ 0.022 cm(-1) between Cu(II) ions in neighbouring binuclear units. The interplays between structure, exchange couplings, magnetic dimension and spin dynamics in the binuclear compound are discussed. A previously unreported situation, where the structure of the spectra arising from the anisotropic spin-spin interaction term (D) within the binuclear unit is averaged out, but the forbidden half field transition is not, is observed and explained.

Abstract
A Cu(II)...Cu(II) pyrophosphate-bridged compound of formula {[Na(3)Cu(P(2)O(7))(NO(3))].3H(2)O}(n) (1) has been characterized. X-ray diffraction measurements show that it crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/m, with unit cell dimensions a = 7.2492(5) A, b = 8.2446(6) A, c = 9.9050(7) A, beta = 107.123(1) degrees, and Z = 2. The structure consists of chains of Cu(II) cations at inversion symmetry sites bound to four equatorial oxygen atoms provided by two pyrophosphate anions halved by a symmetry plane and two axial oxygen atoms of nitrate anions. The molar magnetic susceptibility chi(0) of a powdered sample was measured in the temperature range 2 K < T < 273 K, and an isothermal magnetization curve, M(B(0),T), was obtained at T = 30 K, with the magnetic field B(0) between 0 and 5 T. Fitting a spin-chain model to the susceptibility data, we evaluate an antiferromagnetic exchange coupling 2J = -24.3(1) cm(-1) (defined as H(ex) = -2JS(i)S(j)) between Cu(II) neighbors. For any orientation of B(0), single-crystal electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra obtained at 9.8 and 33.9 GHz at 300 K display a single signal having a g matrix with orthorhombic symmetry, arising from the merger produced by the exchange interaction of the resonances corresponding to the two rotated Cu(II) sites. The g matrices of the individual molecules calculated assuming axial symmetry yielded principal values g(parallel) = 2.367(1) and g(perpendicular) = 2.074(1) at both frequencies, indicating a d(x(2)-y(2)) ground-state orbital for the Cu(II) ions. The angular variation of the EPR line width suggests exchange narrowing in a system with one-dimensional spin dynamics, as expected from the structure and susceptibility data. The results, discussed in terms of the crystal and electronic structures and of the spin dynamics of the compound, are compared with those obtained in other materials.

Abstract
The reaction in water of M(II) [M = Ni or Mn] with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and sodium pyrophosphate (Na4P2O7) in a 2:4:1 stoichiometry resulted in the crystallization of dinuclear complexes featuring the heretofore rare bridging pyrophosphate. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed the complexes to be {[(phen)2Ni]2(micro-P2O7)} . 27H2O (1) and {[(phen)2Mn]2(micro-P2O7)} . 13H2O (2) where the asymmetric M(phen)2 units are bridged by bis-bidentate pyrophosphate, each metal ion exhibiting a distorted octahedral geometry. The bridging pyrophosphate places adjacent metal centers at 5.031 A in 1 and 4.700 A in 2, and its conformation also gives rise to an intramolecular pi-pi interaction between two adjacent phen ligands. Intermolecular pi-pi interactions between phen ligands from adjacent dinuclear complexes create an ornate 3D network in 1, whereas a 2D sheet results in 2. The hydrophilic nature of the pyrophosphate ligand leads to heavy hydration with the potential solvent-accessible area for 1 and 2 accounting for 45.7% and 26.4% of their unit cell volumes, respectively. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples of 1 and 2 revealed net weak intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling between metal centers in both compounds with J = -3.77 cm(-1) in 1 and J = -0.88 cm(-1) in 2, the Hamiltonian being defined as H = -JSA.SB. The ability of the bis-bidentate pyrophosphate to mediate magnetic interactions between divalent first row transition metal ions is discussed bearing in mind the number and nature of the interacting magnetic orbitals.

Abstract
Three conformationally preorganised host molecules based on the [3]polynorbornyl framework and incorporating di-urea receptors were synthesised and their interaction with a series of anions investigated by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. A high affinity of each host molecule for dihydrogenphosphate (H(2)PO(4)(-)) and dihydrogenpyrophosphate (H(2)P(2)O(7)(2-)) was identified. In addition to binding to the urea receptors of the host molecules, evidence for an interaction involving the non-polar C-H groups within the binding cavity of the framework and guest anions was also discovered. Furthermore, an unusual 2 : 1 host-to-anion stoichiometry was indicated when binding H(2)P(2)O(7)(2-), and a model for the anion-mediated self-assembly of this complex species is proposed.

Abstract
The reaction of copper(II) hydroxide with 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) (1 : 1) in alkaline aqueous solution (pH 14) at room temperature affords the alternating carbonate/hydroxo-bridged copper(II) polymeric chain compound {[Cu3(bipy)3(mu-OH)2(mu-CO3)2].11H2O}n, 1, as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of 1 is built up from two similar centro-symmetric dinuclear [(bipy)Cu(mu-OH)]2 cores which link together via bridging carbonate groups to mononuclear [(bipy)Cu] fragments to form the chain. Interdigitation of adjacent chains through pi-pi interactions, which involve each bipy ligand, forms sheets that are separated by the water molecules of crystallisation. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements have shown that 1 behaves as an isolated spin doublet with two non-interacting spin triplets with the magnetic coupling through the bis-mu-hydroxo bridges being strongly ferromagnetic in nature. The hydrothermal reaction of copper(II) hydroxide, bipy and ammonium hydrogenphosphate (pH 8) yields a dinuclear copper(II) complex of formula {[Cu2(bipy)2(mu-OH)2(HPO4)(H2O)].4H2O}, 2, as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of consists of an asymmetric dinuclear bis-mu-hydroxo copper(II) core with a monodentate hydrogenphosphate dianion coordinating to one copper(II) atom (above) and a water molecule to the other (below). Intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bond interactions involving the hydrogenphosphate, water molecules and bis-mu-hydroxo groups link adjacent dinuclear fragments into chains, which interdigitate to form sheets that are separated by the water molecules of crystallisation. The investigation of the magnetic properties of 2 showed that the strength of the ferromagnetic interaction through the bis-mu-hydroxo bridges is influenced by the significant out-of-plane displacement of the hydrogen atom of the hydroxo groups, brought about through hydrogen bonding to the hydrogenphosphate ligand, and yielded the strongest ferromagnetic coupling yet reported for the bis-mu-hydroxo copper(II) core.

Abstract
The reaction in water of M(II) ions (M = Cu, 1; Zn, 2; VO, 3) with 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) followed by Na4P2O7 leads to the formation of three new complexes which feature the pyrophosphate anion, P2O7(4-), as a bridging ligand. Single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed 1 to be {[(bipy)Cu(H2O)(micro-P2O7)Na2(H2O)6] x 4H2O}, and 2 as a tetranuclear Zn(II) complex, {[(bipy)Zn(H2O)(micro-P2O7)Zn(bipy)]2 x 14H2O}. The structure of 1 consists of a mononuclear [(bipy)Cu(H2O)(P2O7)]2- unit that links via a pyrophosphate bridge to two Na atoms. The hydrated six-coordinate Na atoms themselves join together through bridging water molecules to generate a 2D Na-water sheet. The structure of 2 consists of a tetranuclear Zn(II) cluster (dimer-of-dimers) with two pyrophosphate ligands bridging between four metal centres. Adjacent clusters interact through face-to-face pi-pi interactions via the bipy ligands to yield a 2D sheet. Adjacent sheets pack in register to create channels, which are filled by the water molecules of crystallisation. An intricate 2D H-bonded water network separates adjacent sheets and encapsulates the tetranuclear clusters. Aspects of the pyrophosphate coordination modes in 1 and 2 are of structural relevance to those found within the inorganic pyrophosphatases. Compound 3, {[(bipy)(VO)2]2(micro-P2O7)] x 5H2O}, was isolated as an insoluble lime-green powder. Its dinuclear structure was elucidated from elemental and thermal analysis, magnetic susceptibility measurement and IR spectroscopy. The latter displayed characteristic bridging pyrophosphate and signature V=O stretches, which were corroborated by contrast to the IR spectra of 1 and 2 and through comparison with those found in the structurally characterised dinuclear complex, {[(bipy)Cu(H2O)]2(micro-P2O7) x 7H2O}, 4.
