Electronic structure of low-spin ferric chlorins: characterization of bis(dimethylphenylphosphine)(meso-tetraphenylchlorinato)iron(III) triflate

Photophysical Studies of a Catechol Based Polyfunctional Dipodal Chelator: Application for Optical Probe for Selective Detection of Fe(III)

A novel catechol based dipodal fluorescent chelator N,N'-bis[3-[(E)-(2,3-dihydroxyphenyl)methyleneamino]propyl]propanediamide(MPC), has been developed and its photophysical behaviour was studied by experimental (UV-VIS and fluorescence) and DFT method. The design of the molecule has been inspired from the naturally occurring siderophore enterobactin, a catechol based chelator with amide linkage, that shows an excellent binding efficiency towards Fe(III). The dipodal molecule (MPC) presented here, carries two catechol pendant binding moieties linked to the malonate central unit through propylene spacers by amide linkage. MPC showed good selectivity for Fe(III) at 10^-4 M concentration in aqueous medium amongst the biologically and environmentally important metal ions chosen viz., Na(I), K(I), Al(III), Cr(III), Fe(III), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II), by demonstrating a remarkable quenching in the fluorescent emission from 262 a.u. to 55 a.u. at λ_max = 477 nm. Also, the pre-organized assembled ligand favored an efficient Fe (III) encapsulation through coordination by imine nitrogen and catecholate oxygen donors. High formation constant (log β = 31.3) for 1:1 metal-ligand complex evaluated by both potentiometric and spectrophotometric methods, established the strong binding efficiency of the ligand for Fe(III) metal ion. The binding stoichiometry in the complex was also confirmed from Stern -Volmer and Hill Plot analysis. Further investigation on the emission behavior of MPC in a completely DMSO system explored its suitability for extensive applications in the areas such as, metallurgy, material science, iron contamination remedial in the materials etc.. DFT studies suggest that the ligand displays a U-shaped geometry with a parallel π-stacking and the hydrogen bond between two arms. The experimental infrared, electronic, fluorescence, ¹H nmr, ¹³C nmr spectra were correlated with the theoretical results. The nature of electronic transitions were identified from the TDDFT calculation. The ligand forms a hexa-coordinated complex with six Fe-O bonds extending an orthorhombic geometry due distortion from a regular octahedron.

Electronic structure of low-spin six-coordinate iron(III) meso-tetrapropylchlorin complexes

Low-spin iron(III) tetrapropylchlorins [ Fe ( T n PrC ) L 2]± (L = HIm, 1-MeIm, DMAP, CN-, 4-CNPy, tBuNC) adopt the dxy-type ground state regardless of the nature of axial ligands. Among the complexes examined, [ Fe ( T n PrC )( t BuNC )2]+ has shown quite unique spectroscopic properties as described below. (1) 1 H NMR signals were extremely broad as compared with those of other complexes. In particular, 5,20- CH 2(α) signal was too broad to detect. (2) No signals except C γ were observed in 13 C NMR spectra. (3) Tetragonal splitting parameter (|Δ|) estimated by the EPR g values at 4.2 K reached as much as 12.4 λ, which is the largest |Δ| value among all the low-spin iron(III) porphyrins and porphyrinoids reported previously. On the basis of these results, we have concluded that [ Fe ( T n PrC )( t BuNC )2]+ adopts the low-spin iron(III) with (dxz, dyz)4(dxy)1 electronic ground state at 4.2–30 K where the EPR spectra are taken, while it should be expressed as the low-spin Fe ( II ) chlorin π-radical cation [ Fe II ( T n PrC .)( t BuNC )2]+ at ambient temperature where the NMR spectra are taken.

Formation and characterization of five- and six-coordinate iron(III) corrolazine complexes

Electronic structures of five- and six-coordinate iron(III) corrolazine complexes are determined by means of 1H NMR, 13C NMR, EPR, and Mössbauer spectroscopy as well as SQUID magnetometry. A series of five-coordinate complexes, [FeIII(TBP8Cz)(L)]* where the axial ligands(L) are cyanide(CN-), imidazole(HIm), 1-methylimidazole(1-MeIm), 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyridine(DMAP), pyridine(Py), 4-cyanopyridine(4-CNPy), and tert-butylisocyanide(tBuNC), are obtained by the addition of 1 to 2 equiv. of the ligands to the dichloromethane solutions of FeIII(TBP8Cz) at 298 K: TBP8Cz is a trianion of 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octakis(4-tert-butylphenyl)corrolazine. These complexes commonly show the S = 3/2 at 298 K. By contrast, formation of the six-coordinate complexes depends on the nature of the axial ligands. While the addition of 3 equiv. of CN- has completely converted FeIII(TBP8Cz) to (Bu4N)2[FeIII(TBP8Cz)(CN)2] at 298 K, the conversion to the bis-adduct is only attained below ca. 200 K in the case of HIm, 1-MeIm, and DMAP even in the presence of 50 equiv. of the ligands. If the axial ligand is Py, 4-CNPy, or tBuNC, the formation of [FeIII(TBP8Cz)(L)2] is confirmed only at an extremely low temperature (15 K). Close inspection of the 1H NMR and EPR spectra has revealed that all the bis-adducts adopt the (dxy)2(dxz, dyz)3 ground state. While FeIII(TBP8Cz) forms paramagnetic bis- and mono-adduct in toluene solution at 298 K in the presence of excess amount of CN- and tBuNC, respectively, the corresponding porphyrazine complex, [FeIII(TBP8Pz)]Cl , forms diamagnetic bis-CN and bis-tBuNC under the same conditions: TBP8Pz is a dianion of 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octakis(4-tert-butylphenyl)-porphyrazine. Thus, the iron(III) ion of porphyrazine complex is more easily reduced than that of the corresponding corrolazine complex.

13C NMR Studies of the Electronic Structure of Low-Spin Iron(III) Tetraphenylchlorin Complexes

A series of low-spin six-coordinate (tetraphenylchlorinato)iron(III) complexes [Fe(TPC)(L)2]+/- (L = 1-MeIm, CN-, 4-CNPy, and (t)BuNC) have been prepared, and their (13)C NMR spectra have been examined to reveal the electronic structure. These complexes exist as the mixture of the two isomers with the (d(xy))2(d(xz), d(yz))3 and (d(xz), d(yz))4(d(xy))1 ground states. Contribution of the (d(xz), d(yz))4(d(xy))1 isomer has increased as the axial ligand changes from 1-MeIm, to CN(-) (in CD2Cl2 solution), CN- (in CD(3)OD solution), and 4-CNPy, and then to tBuNC as revealed by the meso and pyrroline carbon chemical shifts; the meso carbon signals at 146 and -19 ppm in [Fe(TPC)(1-MeIm)2]+ shifted to 763 and 700 ppm in [Fe(TPC)(tBuNC)2]+. In the case of the CN- complex, the population of the (d(xz), d(yz))4(d(xy))1 isomer has increased to a great extent when the solvent is changed from CD2Cl2 to CD3OD. The result is ascribed to the stabilization of the d(xz) and d(yz) orbitals of iron(III) caused by the hydrogen bonding between methanol and the coordinated cyanide ligand. Comparison of the 13C NMR data of the TPC complexes with those of the TPP, OEP, and OEC complexes has revealed that the populations of the (d(xz), d(yz))4(d(xy))1 isomer in TPC complexes are much larger than those in the corresponding TPP, OEC, and OEP complexes carrying the same axial ligands.

NMR and EPR studies of chloroiron(III) tetraphenyl-chlorin and its complexes with imidazoles and pyridines of widely differing basicities

The NMR and EPR spectra of two bisimidazole and three bispyridine complexes of tetraphenylchlorinatoiron(III), [(TPC)Fe(L)2]+ (L = Im-d4, 2-MeHIm, 4-Me2NPy, Py, and 4-CNPy), have been investigated. The full resonance assignments of the [(TPC)Fe(L)2]+ complexes of this study have been made from correlation spectroscopy (COSY) and nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy (NOESY) experiments and Amsterdam density functional (ADF) calculations. Unlike the [(OEC)Fe(L)2]+ complexes reported previously (Cai, S.; Lichtenberger, D. L.; Walker, F. A. Inorg. Chem. 2005, 44, 1890-1903), the NMR data for the [(TPC)Fe(L)2]+ complexes of this study indicate that the ground state is S = 1/2 for each bisligand complex, whereas a higher spin state was present at NMR temperatures for the Py and 4-CNPy complexes of (OEC)Fe(III). The pyrrole-8,17 and pyrroline-H of all [TPCFe(L)2]+ show large magnitude chemical shifts (hence indicating large spin density on the adjacent carbons that are part of the pi system), while pyrrole-12,13-CH2 and -7,18-CH2 protons show much smaller chemical shifts, as predicted by the spin densities obtained from ADF calculations. The magnitude of the chemical shifts decreases with decreasing donor ability of the substituted pyridine ligands, with the nonhindered imidazole ligand having slightly larger magnitude chemical shifts than the most basic pyridine, even though its basicity is significantly lower (4-Me2NPyH+ pKa = 9.7, H2Im+ pKa = 6.65 (adjusted for the statistical factor of 2 protons)). The temperature dependence of the chemical shifts of all but the 4-Me2NPy bisligand complexes studied over the temperature range of the NMR investigations shows that they have mixed (dxy)2(dxz,dyz)3/(dxzdyz)4(dxy)1 electron configurations that cannot be resolved by temperature-dependent fitting of the proton chemical shifts, with an S = 3/2 excited state in each case that in most cases lies at more than kT at room temperature above the ground state. The observed pattern of chemical shifts of the 4-CNPy complex and analysis of the temperature dependence indicate that it has a pure (dxzdyz)4(dxy)1 ground state and that it is ruffled, because ruffling mixes the a(2u)(pi)-like orbital of the chlorin into the singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO). This mixing accounts for the negative chemical shift of the pyrroline-H (-6.5 ppm at -40 degrees C) and thus the negative spin density at the pyrroline-alpha-carbons, but the mixing is not to the same extent as observed for [(TPC)Fe(t-BuNC)2]+, whose pyrroline-H chemical shift is -36 ppm at 25 degrees C (Simonneaux, G.; Kobeissi, M. J. Chem. Soc., Dalton Trans. 2001, 1587-1592). Peak assignments for high-spin (TPC)FeCl have been made by saturation transfer techniques that depend on chemical exchange between this complex and its bis-4-Me2NPy adduct.

Primary and Secondary Phosphane Complexes of Metalloporphyrins: Isolation, Spectroscopy, and X-ray Crystal Structures of Ruthenium and Osmium Porphyrins Binding Phenyl- or Diphenylphosphane

[Ru(II)(por)(PH(n)Ph(3-n))2], [Os(II)(por)(CO)(PH(n)Ph(3-n))] (n=1, 2), and [Os(II)(F20-tpp){P(OH)Ph2}(PHPh2)] (F20-tpp=5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrinato dianion) were prepared from the reaction of [M(II)(por)(CO)] (M=Ru, Os) or [Os(VI)(por)O2] with the respective primary/secondary phosphane and characterized by 1H NMR, 31P NMR, UV/Vis, and IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The reaction of [Os(VI)(por)O2] with PHPh2 also gave minor amounts of [Os(II)(por){P(OH)Ph2}2]. [Ru(II)(F20-tpp)(PH2Ph)2] exhibits a remarkable stability toward air and shows a reversible metal-centered oxidation couple at E(1/2)=0.39 V versus [Cp2Fe](+/0) in the cyclic voltammogram. The structures of [Ru(II)(F20-tpp)(PH2Ph)2] x 2CH2Cl2, [Ru(II)(4-Cl-tpp)(PHPh2)2] x 2CH2Cl2 (4-Cl-tpp=5,10,15,20-tetrakis(p-chlorophenyl)porphyrinato dianion), [Ru(II)(F20-tpp)(PHPh2)2], and [Os(II)(F20-tpp){P(OH)Ph2}2] were determined by X-ray crystallography and feature Ru-P distances of 2.3397(11)-2.3609(9) A and an Os-P distance of 2.369(2) A.

NMR and EPR Studies of the Bis(pyridine) and Bis(tert-butyl isocyanide) Complexes of Iron(III) Octaethylchlorin

The NMR and EPR spectra of a series of pyridine complexes [(OEC)Fe(L)2]+ (L = 4-Me2NPy, Py, and 4-CNPy) have been investigated. The EPR spectra at 4.2 K suggest that, with a decrease of the donor strength of the axial ligands, the complexes change their ground state from (d(xy))2 (d(xz)d(yz))3 to (d(xz)d(yz))4 (d(xy))1. The NMR data from 303 to 183 K show that at any temperature within this range the chemical shifts of pyrrole-8,17-CH2 protons increase with a decrease in the donor strength of the axial ligands. The full peak assignments of the [(OEC)Fe(L)2]+ complexes of this study have been made from COSY and NOE difference experiments. The pyrrole-8,17-CH2 and pyrroline protons show large chemical shifts (hence indicating large pi spin density on the adjacent carbons which are part of the pi system), while pyrrole-12,13-CH2 and -7,18-CH2 protons show much smaller chemical shifts, as predicted by the spin densities obtained from molecular orbital calculations, both Hückel and DFT; the DFT calculations additionally show close energy spacing of the highest five filled orbitals (of the Fe(II) complex) and strong mixing of metal and chlorin character in these orbitals that is sensitive to the donor strength of the axial substituents. The pattern of chemical shifts of the pyrrole-CH2 protons of [(OEC)Fe(t-BuNC)2]+ looks somewhat like that of [(OEC)Fe(4-Me2NPy)2]+, while the chemical shifts of the meso-protons are qualitatively similar to those of [(OEP)Fe(t-BuNC)2]+. The temperature dependence of the chemical shifts of [(OEC)Fe(t-BuNC)2]+ shows that it has a mixed (d(xz)d(yz))4 (d(xy))1 and (d(xy))2 (d(xz),d(yz))3 electron configuration that cannot be resolved by temperature-dependent fitting of the proton chemical shifts, with a S = 5/2 excited state that lies somewhat more than 2kT at room temperature above the ground state; the observed pattern of chemical shifts is the approximate average of those expected for the two S = 1/2 electronic configurations, which involve the a-symmetry SOMO of a planar chlorin ring with the unpaired electron predominantly in the d(yz) orbital and the b-symmetry SOMO of a ruffled chlorin ring with the unpaired electron predominantly in the d(xy) orbital. A rapid interconversion between the two, with calculated vibrational frequency of 22 cm(-1), explains the observed pattern of chemical shifts, while a favoring of the ruffled conformation explains the negative chemical shift (and thus the negative spin density at the alpha-pyrroline ring carbons), of the pyrroline-H of [TPCFe(t-BuNC)2]CF3SO3 (Simonneaux, G.; Kobeissi, M. J. Chem. Soc., Dalton Trans. 2001, 1587-1592). Peak assignments for high-spin (OEC)FeCl have been made by saturation transfer techniques that depend on chemical exchange between this complex and its bis-4-Me2NPy adduct. The contact shifts of the pyrrole-CH2 and meso protons of the high-spin complex depend on both sigma and pi spin delocalization due to contributions from three of the occupied frontier orbitals of the chlorin ring.

Electronic structure of iron chlorins: characterization of bis(l-valine methyl ester)(meso-tetraphenylchlorin)iron(III)triflate and bis(l-valine methyl ester)(meso-tetraphenylchlorin)iron(II)

The synthesis and characterization of the two iron chlorin complexes [Fe(III)(TPC)(NH(2)CH(CO(2)CH(3))(CH(CH(3))(2)))(2)]CF(3)SO(3) (1) and Fe(II)(TPC)[(NH(2)CH(CO(2)CH(3))(CH(CH(3))(2))](2) (2) are reported. The crystal structure of complex 1 has been determined. The X-ray structure shows that the porphyrinate rings are weakly distorted. The metal-nitrogen distances to the reduced pyrrole N(4), 2.034(4) A, and to the pyrrole trans to it N(2), 2.012(4) A, are longer than the distances to the two remaining nitrogens [N(1), 1.996(4) A, and N(3), 1.984(4) A], leading to a core-hole expansion of the macrocycle due to the reduced pyrrole. The (1)H NMR isotropic shifts at 20 degrees C of the different pyrrole protons of 1 varied from -0.8 to -48.3 ppm according to bis-ligated complexes of low-spin ferric chlorins. The EPR spectrum of [Fe(TPC)(NH(2)CH(CO(2)CH(3))(CH(CH(3))(2)))(2)]CF(3)SO(3) (1) in solution is rhombic and gives the principal g values g(1) = 2.70, g(2) = 2.33, and g(3) = 1.61 (Sigmag(2) = 15.3). These spectroscopic observations are indicative of a metal-based electron in the d(pi) orbital for the [Fe(TPC)(NH(2)CH(CO(2)CH(3))(CH(CH(3))(2)))(2)]CF(3)SO(3) (1) complex with a (d(xy))(2)(d(xz)d(yz))(3) ground state at any temperature. The X-ray structure of the ferrous complex 2 also shows that the porphyrinate rings are weakly distorted. The metal-nitrogen distances to the reduced pyrrole N(4), 1.991(5) A, and to the pyrrole trans to it N(2), 2.005(6) A, are slightly different from the distances to the two remaining nitrogens [N(1), 1.988(5) A, and N(3), 2.015(5) A], leading to a core-hole expansion of the macrocycle due to the reduced pyrrole.
