Abstract
In this review, the current state of affairs in the novel field of the group 14 element clusters based on the bicyclo[1.1.0]butane framework, namely, bicyclo[1.1.0]butane, [1.1.1]propellane, and tricyclo[2.1.0.02,5 ]pentane derivatives, are overviewed. Structural similarities and differences between these three classes of highly strained polycyclic compounds are considered from the viewpoint of the critically important nature of their bridgehead bonds. Synthetic strategies towards bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes, [1.1.1]propellanes, and tricyclo[2.1.0.02,5 ]pentanes, as well as their peculiar structural and bonding features, and specific reactivity, are also presented and discussed in this review.

Abstract
The continuously decreasing size of device features in microelectronics draws growing attention to the structuring of silicon at the molecular level with powerful tools provided by synthetic chemistry. Silicon clusters are of particular importance in this regard not only as potential precursors for silicon deposition but also as well-defined model systems for bulk and surfaces of silicon at the nanoscale as well as possible starting points for future construction of molecularly precise device structures. This review aims to give a comprehensive overview about the state of the art in the synthesis of molecular silicon clusters, which are grouped into (1) electron-precise saturated clusters, (2) soluble polyhedral Zintl anions, and (3) unsaturated silicon clusters, the so-called siliconoids. Particular attention is paid to functionalization as it is generally considered a necessary prerequisite for the design and construction of more extended systems. The interrelations between the three different classes of molecular silicon clusters, e.g., arising from the introduction of negatively charged functional groups, are highlighted on grounds of NMR properties and computed electronic structures.

Abstract
A carbon–carbon double bond consists of a σ bond and a π bond. Recently, the concept of a π single bond, where a π bond is not accompanied by a σ bond, has been proposed in diradicals containing carbon and heteroatom radical centers. Here we report a closed-shell compound having a silicon–silicon π single bond. 1,2,2,3,4,4-Hexa-tert-butylbicyclo[1.1.0]tetrasilane has a silicon−silicon π single bond between the bridgehead silicon atoms. The X-ray crystallographic analysis shows that the silicon−silicon π single bond (2.853(1) Å) is far longer than the longest silicon−silicon bond so far reported. In spite of this unusually long bond length, the electrons of the 3p orbitals are paired, which is confirmed by measurement of electron paramagnetic resonance, and magnetic susceptibility and natural bond orbital analysis. The properties of the silicon−silicon π single bond are studied by UV/Vis and 29Si NMR spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. Examples of π single bonds in diradicals are rare, as they are typically unstable. Here, the authors describe a room temperature-stable closed-shell bicyclic tetrasilane that features a Si-Si π single bond between two of the non-adjacent Si centers.

Abstract
Cyclopentasilane-fused hexasilabenzvalene 1 was synthesized by the reduction of tetrachlorocyclopentasilane 6 in 19% yield as a green powder. The molecular structure and properties of 1 were studied by spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic analyses. Theoretical calculations of the model and real molecules of 1 and their structural isomers 12–16 suggest that the linkage of the central hexasilabenzvalene moiety with trisilane chains and the introduction of tert-butyl groups affect their relative energies.

Abstract
The title compound was found to crystallize in the Pu3Pd5 structure type (SG Cmcm) with cell dimensions of a = 10.5179(9) A, b = 8.4789(8) A, and c = 10.7623(10) A. The structure consists of isolated Sn5(6-) square-pyramidal units surrounded by cations that seem to play a crucial role in stabilizing the Zintl polyanions. The square pyramids contract at low temperatures (100 K) leading to the shortening of the basal intracluster Sn-Sn bond (2.74 A), while the intercluster bonds become very large, indicating features of bond stretching isomerism as is known for Ba3Ge4. A study of different crystals shows a slight variation in the lattice parameters, suggesting the presence of a definite phase width which was substantiated by the successful synthesis of monophasic samples of Sr(3-x)CaxSn5 (0.5 <or= x <or= 2.5). However, all attempts to obtain the pure Ca phase, Ca3Sn5 have been unsuccessful. The compounds show a weakly metallic behavior, as shown by the electrodeless Q method. Magnetic studies show a very low susceptibility (nearly temperature independent till 5 K). Our studies suggest that the "Sn" polyanions in Ca(2.04)Sr(0.96)Sn(5) may be described as an arachno-Sn5(-6) Zintl cluster.
