Abstract
A series of electron donor-acceptor compounds are reported in which both the donor and acceptor strengths are systematically altered using mono-, bi-, and terthiophene as donors and benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (btd), dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (dppz), and the corresponding rhenium(I) complex, [ReCl(CO)3(dppz)], as acceptors. The electronic properties of the compounds are characterized using electrochemistry, electronic absorbance and emission spectroscopies, and transient absorption spectroscopy. The effect of donor and acceptor strengths on frontier molecular orbital localization and on the charge-transfer (CT) character of optical transitions is modeled using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The electronic absorption spectra of the compounds investigated are dominated by intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) transitions, where the CT character is shown to increase across the series from mono- to bi- to terthiophene but not significantly across the acceptor series. Emission is shown to originate from the absorbing state. Long-lived nonemissive states have been observed using transient absorption spectroscopy and assigned using triplet-state DFT calculations, which indicate that the lowest energy excited state has more thiophene-localized π,π* character with an increasing number of appended thiophenes.

Abstract
Understanding photodriven multielectron reaction pathways requires the identification and spectroscopic characterization of intermediates and their excited-state dynamics, which is very challenging due to their short lifetimes. To the best of our knowledge, this manuscript reports for the first time on in situ spectroelectrochemistry as an alternative approach to study the excited-state properties of reactive intermediates of photocatalytic cycles. UV/Vis, resonance-Raman, and transient-absorption spectroscopy have been employed to characterize the catalytically competent intermediate [(tbbpy)2 RuII (tpphz)RhI Cp*] of [(tbbpy)2 Ru(tpphz)Rh(Cp*)Cl]Cl(PF6 )2 (Ru(tpphz)RhCp*), a photocatalyst for the hydrogenation of nicotinamide (NAD-analogue) and proton reduction, generated by electrochemical and chemical reduction. Electronic transitions shifting electron density from the activated catalytic center to the bridging tpphz ligand significantly reduce the catalytic activity upon visible-light irradiation.

Abstract
Reduction of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione (pd) with CoCpR2 resulted in the first molecular compounds of the pd˙- semi-quinone radical anion, [CoCpR2]+[pd]˙- (R = H, (1); R = Me4, (2)). Furthermore compounds 1 and 2 were reacted with [Y(hfac)3(thf)2] (hfac = 1,1,1-5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate) to synthesise the rare earth-transition metal heterometallic compounds, [CoCpR2]+[Y(hfac)3(N,N'-pd)]˙- (R = H, (3); R = Me4, (4)).

Abstract
Due to the limited amount of fossil energy carriers, the storage of solar energy in chemical bonds using artificial photosynthesis has been under intensive investigation within the last decades. As the understanding of the underlying working principle of these complex systems continuously grows, more focus will be placed on a catalyst design for highly selective product formation. Recent reports have shown that multifunctional photocatalysts can operate with high chemoselectivity, forming different catalysis products under appropriate reaction conditions. Within this context [(bpy)Rh(Cp*)X]n+-based catalysts are highly relevant examples for a detailed understanding of product selectivity in artificial photosynthesis since the identification of a number of possible reaction intermediates has already been achieved.

Abstract
A new ruthenium complex, [Ru(bpy)2(dbe-ppl)](PF6)2 (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine and dbe-ppl=dimethyl 4,4'-(pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]phenanthroline-2,3-diyl)dibenzoate, has been synthesized and characterized by (1)H NMR spectroscopy, UV-Vis, IR, and cyclic voltammetry. Irradiation on the MLCT band results in photoluminescence in both protic and aprotic solvents. The photoluminescence in water is pH dependent, it shows a behavior which can be described by the Henderson-Hasselbalch assuming the protonation/deprotonation of the excited state with a pKa of 2.40±0.01.

Abstract
The photoreduction of the bis(2-phenylpyridinato-)(2,2'-bipyridine)iridium(III) ion ([Ir(ppy)2(bpy)](+)), used as a photosensitizer in photocatalytic water splitting, by triethylamine was studied by means of UV/VIS, XANES, and EPR spectroscopies, supported by theoretical calculations at density functional theory (DFT) and complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF/CASPT2) levels. The combination of these methods suggests a predominant bpy localization of the spin-density of the unpaired electron with notable delocalization to the Ir center. This is particularly evident from EPR and theoretical results and leads to broad EPR lines and a large anisotropy of the g-factor.

Abstract
The intercalation of fac-[(4,4'-bpy)Re(I)(CO)3(dppz)]+ (dppz = dipyridyl[3,2-a:2'3'-c]phenazine) in polynucleotides, poly[dAdT]2 and poly[dGdC]2, where A = adenine, G = guanine, C = cytosine and T = thymine, is a major cause of changes in the absorption and emission spectra of the complex. A strong complex-poly[dAdT]2 interaction drives the intercalation process, which has a binding constant, Kb approximately 1.8 x 10(5) M(-1). Pulse radiolysis was used for a study of the redox reactions of e(-)(aq), C*H(2)OH and N3* radicals with the intercalated complex. These radicals exhibited more affinity for the intercalated complex than for the bases. Ligand-radical complexes, fac-[(4,4'-bpy*)Re(I)(CO)3(dppz)] and fac-[(4,4'-bpy)Re(I)(CO)3(dppz *)], were produced by e(-)(aq) and C*H(2)OH, respectively. A Re(II) species, fac-[(4,4'-bpy)Re(II)(CO)3(dppz)](2+), was produced by N3* radicals. The rate of annihilation of the ligand-radical species was second order on the concentration of ligand-radical while the disappearance of the Re(II) complex induced the oxidative cleavage of the polynucleotide strand.

Abstract
The reduction of dipyridil[3,2-a:2'3'-c]phenazine, dppz, by pulse radiolytically generated e(-)(sol) or by the reaction of the dppz excited states with electron donors produces the radical dppzH(.). The dimer radical, (dppz)(2)H(.), exists in equilibrium with dppz with an association constant, K = 10(3) M(-1). The rate constant for the reaction of dppzH(.) with dppz is k = 4.3 x 10(6) M(-1) s(-1). DFT calculations on the structures of dppzH(.) and the doubly reduced and doubly protonated dppzH(2) rendered a planar structure for the former species and a bent one for the latter.

Abstract
The new redox systems [(acac)2 Ru(mu-Q1)Ru(acac)2](n) (1(n)) and [(acac)2 Ru(mu-Q2)Ru(acac)2](n) (2(n)) with Q1 = 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione and Q2 = 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-diimine were studied for n = +, 0, -, and 2- using UV-Vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry and, in part, EPR and susceptometry. The ligands can bind the first metal (left) through the phenanthroline nitrogen atoms and the second metal (right) at the o-quinonoid chelate site. The neutral compounds are already different: Compound 1 is formulated as a Ru(II)(mu-Q1)*- Ru(III) species with partially coupled semiquinone and ruthenium(III) centers. In contrast, a Ru(III)(mu-Q2)2- Ru(III) structure is assigned to 2, which shows a weak antiferromagnetic spin-spin interaction (J = -1.14 cm(-1)) and displays an intense half-field signal in the EPR spectrum. The one-electron reduced forms are also differently formulated as Ru(II)(mu-Q1)2- Ru(III) for 1(-) with a Ru(III)-typical EPR response and as Ru(II)(mu-Q2)*- Ru(II) for 2(-) with a radical-type EPR signal at g = 2.0020. In contrast, both 1(2-) and 2(2-) can only be described as Ru(II)(mu-Q)2- Ru(II) species. The monooxidized forms 1(+) and 2(+) show very similar spectroscopy, including a Ru(III)-type EPR signal. Although no unambiguous assignment was possible here for the alternatives Ru(II)(mu-Q)0Ru(III), Ru(III)(mu-Q)2- Ru(IV) or Ru(III)(mu-Q)*- Ru(III), the last description is favored. The reasons for identical or different oxidation state combinations are discussed.

Abstract
The electronic structures of the highly air-sensitive intermediates (N[caret]N) (C(5)Me(5))Rh, (N[caret]N = 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpym), 2,2'-bipyrazine (bpz) and 3,3'-bipyridazine (bpdz)) of hydride transfer catalysis schemes were studied through resonance Raman (rR) spectroscopy and through EPR of the reduced forms [(N[caret]N) (C(5)Me(5))Rh](.-). The rR results are compatible with a predominant MLCT character of the lowest excited states [ (N[caret]N) (C(5)Me(5))Rh]*, and the EPR spectra of the reduced states reveal the presence of anion radical ligands, (N[caret]N) (.-), coordinated by unusually electron rich rhodium(i) centres. The experimental results, including the assignments of electronic transitions, are supported by DFT calculations for the model compounds [(N[caret]N)(C(5)H(5))Rh](o)/(.-), (N[caret]N) = bpy or bpym. The calculations confirm a significant but not complete mixing of metal and ligand orbitals in the lowest unoccupied MO which still retains about 3/4 pi* (N[caret]N) character. DFT calculations on (bpy)(C(5)H(5))M and [(bpy)(C(5)H(5))ClM](+), M = Co, Rh, Ir, agree with the experimental results such as the differences between the homologues, especially the different LUMO characters of the precursor cations in the case of Co-->d(M)) and Rh or Ir (-->pi*(bpy)).
