Magnetic Structure and Magnetic Properties of Synthetic Lindgrenite, Cu3(OH)2(MoO4)2

Highly stable and antifungal properties on the oilseed rape of Cu3(MoO4)2(OH)2 nanoflakes prepared by simple aqueous precipitation

In the last few decades, nanoparticles have been a prominent topic in various fields, particularly in agriculture, due to their unique physicochemical properties. Herein, molybdenum copper lindgrenite Cu3(MoO4)2(OH)2 (CM) nanoflakes (NFs) are synthesized by a one-step reaction involving α-MoO3 and CuCO3⋅Cu(OH)2⋅xH2O solution at low temperature for large scale industrial production and developed as an effective antifungal agent for the oilseed rape. This synthetic method demonstrates great potential for industrial applications. Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal that CM samples exhibit a pure monoclinic structure. TG and DSC results show the thermal stable properties. It can undergo a phase transition form copper molybdate (Cu3Mo2O9) at about 300 °C. Then Cu3Mo2O9 nanoparticles decompose into at CuO and MoO3 at 791 °C. The morphology of CM powder is mainly composed of uniformly distributed parallelogram-shaped nanoflakes with an average thickness of about 30 nm. Moreover, the binding energy of CM NFs is measured to be 2.8 eV. To assess the antifungal properties of these materials, both laboratory and outdoor experiments are conducted. In the pour plate test, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of CM NFs against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (S. sclerotiorum) is determined to be 100 ppm, and the zone of inhibiting S. sclerotiorum is 14 mm. When the concentration is above 100 nm, the change rate of the hyphae circle slows down a little and begins to decrease until to 200 ppm. According to the aforementioned findings, the antifungal effects of a nano CM NFs solution are assessed at different concentrations (0 ppm (clear water), 40 ppm, and 80 ppm) on the growth of oilseed rape in an outdoor setting. The results indicate that the application of CM NFs led to significant inhibition of S. sclerotiorum. Specifically, when the nano CM solution was sprayed once at the initial flowering stage at a concentration of 80 ppm, S. sclerotiorum growth was inhibited by approximately 34%. Similarly, when the solution was sprayed once at the initial flowering stage and once at the rape pod stage, using a concentration of 40 ppm, a similar level of inhibition was achieved. These outcomes show that CM NFs possess the ability to bind with more metal ions due to their larger specific surface area. Additionally, their semiconductor physical properties enable the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, CM NFs hold great potential for widespread application in antifungal products.

Copper molybdate synthesized by sonochemistry route at room temperature as an efficient solid catalyst for esterification of oleic acid

Copper molybdate nanoplates were synthesized by a sonochemical process at room temperature, which we report as a simple and cost-effective route. Structural analysis of the material by the Rietveld method of X-ray diffraction (XRD) data revealed lindgrenite Cu3(MoO4)2(OH)2 in a single-phase structure. All the vibrational modes characteristic of the space group were identified by Raman vibrational and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopies. The profile obtained for N2 adsorption/desorption was type III hysteresis, characteristic of mesoporous materials, with a surface area of 70.77(1) m2 g-1. The micrographs of the material obtained by scanning electron microscopy showed nanoplates with nanometric sizes and an anisotropic growth aspect. The catalytic activity of lindgrenite was evaluated by esterifying oleic acid with methanol, showing high conversion rate to methyl oleate and good catalyst stability after seven recycling cycles. Above all, the best catalytic performance was reached when we optimized parameters such as oleic acid:methanol molar ratio of 1:5, 5% of catalyst dosage, and reaction time of 5 h, resulting in 98.38% of conversion at 413 K. Therefore, sonochemically synthesized lindgrenite proved to be a high potential material for biofuel production by oleic acid esterification.

Precursor salt assisted syntheses of high-index faceted concave hexagon and nanorod-like polyoxometalates

This paper describes an effective method for a precursor salt assisted fabrication and reshaping of two different polyoxometalates [(NH4)2Cu(MoO4)2 (ACM) and Cu3(MoO4)2(OH)2 (CMOH)] into five distinctive shapes through straightforward and indirect routes. Explicit regulation of the structural arrangements of ACM and CMOH has been studied in detail with altered precursor salt concentration employing our laboratory developed modified hydrothermal (MHT) method. Morphologically different ACM 3D architectures are evolved with higher molybdate concentration, whereas 1D growth of CMOH is observed with increased copper concentration. Interesting morphological transformation of the products has been accomplished employing one precursor salt at a time without using any other foreign reagent. It has been proven that large ACMs become labile in the presence of incoming Cu(II) and NH4(+) ions of the precursor salts. A new strategy for the conversion of faceted ACMs (hexagonal plate, circular plate and hollow flower) to exclusive CMOH nanorods through a Cu(II) assisted reaction has been adopted. According to thermodynamic consideration, the synthesis of rare concave nanostructures with high index facet is still challenging due to their higher reactivity. In this study, concave hexagonal ACM with high index facet {hkl} has been successfully prepared for the first time from hexagonal ACM through simple etching with ammonium heptamolybdate (AHM), which is another precursor salt. Hexagonal ACM corrugates to a concave hexagon because of the higher reactivity of the {001} crystal plane than that of the {010} plane. It has been shown that high index facet exposed concave hexagonal ACM serves as a better catalyst for the photodegradation of dye than the other microstructures enclosed by low index facets.

Crystal and magnetic structures and magnetic properties of selenate containing natrochalcite, A(I)M(II)2(H3O2)(SeO4)2 where A = Na or K and M = Mn, Co, or Ni

The synthesis of a series of selenate containing natrochalcite, A(I)M(II)(2)(H(3)O(2))(SeO(4))(2) where A = Na or K and M = Mn, Co, or Ni (here labeled as AMH and AMD for the hydrogenated and deuterated compounds, respectively), the X-ray crystal structure determinations from single crystals (Ni) and powder (Mn), magnetic properties, and magnetic structures of the cobalt analogues are reported. The nuclear crystal structures for NaNiH, KNiH, and KMnH are similar to those reported for the cobalt analogues (NaCoH and KCoH) and consist of chains of edge-sharing octahedra (MO(6)) which are connected by H(3)O(2) and SeO(4) to form layers which are in turn bridged by the alkali, in an octahedral coordination site, to form the 3D-framework. The magnetic properties are characterized by antiferromagnetic interaction at high temperatures and antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures (NaCoH, 3.5 K; KCoH, 5.9 K; KNiH, 8.5 K; and KMnH, 16 K), except for KNi(2)(H(3)O(2))(SeO(4))(2) which displays a weak ferromagnetic interaction and no long-range ordering above 2 K. The neutron magnetic structures of the cobalt analogues, studied as a function of temperature, are different for the two cobalt salts and also different from all the known magnetic structures of the natrochalcite family. Whereas the magnetic structure of NaCoD has a k = (0, 0, 0), that of KCoD has one consisting of a doubled nuclear cell, k = (0, 0, 1/2). Both compounds have four magnetic sublattices related to the four cobalt atoms of the nuclear unit cell. In NaCoD the moments are in the bc-plane, M(y) = 2.51(2) μ(B) and M(z) = 1.29(4) μ(B), with the major component along the cobalt chain and the resultant moment, 2.83(3) μ(B), making an angle of 27° with the b-axis. The sum of the moments within the cell is zero. For KCoD the moment at each cobalt site has a component along each crystallographic axis, M(x) = 2.40(3), M(y) = 1.03(3), M(z) = 1.59(8) giving a total M = 2.49(3) μ(B). Within one nuclear cell the moments are fully compensated. The moments corresponding to the cobalt atoms of the second nuclear cell comprising the magnetic unit cell are oriented in opposite directions.

Existence of two concomitant magnetic structures below T(Néel) for the natrochalcite, NaFe(II)2(H3O2)(MoO4)2

A comparative study of the magnetic properties and magnetic structures of the natrochalcite, NaFe(2)(D(3)O(2))(MoO(4))(2) (FeD) to those of the isostructural NaCo(2)(D(3)O(2))(MoO(4))(2) (CoD) and NaNi(2)(D(3)O(2))(MoO(4))(2) (NiD) is presented. The structural change is a shrinking of the unit cell in the order of the ionic radii of the transition metal, FeD > CoD > NiD. While NiD and CoD are canted-antiferromagnets with T(N) = 28 and 21 K, respectively, FeD is an anisotropic 2D-Ising antiferromagnet (T(N) = 17 K) with a spin-flop field of 14 kOe at 2 K and the presence of a hysteresis loop reaching only (1)/(4) of the saturation magnetization in 70 kOe. The critical field decreases almost linearly on warming to T(N). The neutron diffraction patterns of FeD below T(N) display numerous magnetic Bragg peaks which cannot be assigned to any one magnetic structure but fits well to two superposed sets, one with a temperature independent line width and has a propagation vector k(1) = (0, 0, 0) while for the other there is a clear dependence and k(2) = (0, 0, ½). In the k(1) = (0, 0, 0) magnetic structure the moments are parallel to each other within one chain and lie along the a-axis but are antiparallel to those in neighboring chains. In contrast CoD and NiD, for which k = (0, 0, 0), have their moments aligned along the b-axis and ac-plane, respectively. The second magnetic structure, k(2) = (0, 0, ½), is characterized by four sublattices, two per layer, where the moments are in the ab-plane and canted with a resultant along the a-axis which is compensated by those of the adjacent layers. For the k(2) = (0, 0, ½) structure, the scattering coherent length decreases, and the moments tend progressively toward the a-axis upon increasing temperature. The coexistence of two concomitant magnetic structures is unprecedented for compounds containing transition metal moment carriers.

A general strategy to fabricate simple polyoxometalate nanostructures: electrochemistry-assisted laser ablation in liquid

Polyoxometalate nanostructures have attracted much attention because of significant technical demands in applications such as catalysts, sensors, and smart windows. Therefore, researchers have recently developed many methods for the synthesis of these nanomaterials. However, these techniques have many visible flaws such as high temperatures or high pressure environments, various templates or additives, demanding and complicated synthesis procedures as well as the presence of impurities in the final products. We therefore propose a general strategy for the fabrication of particular polyoxometalate nanostructures by electrochemically assisted laser ablation in liquid (ECLAL). These polyoxometalates are usually simple as they typically contain two metals and are not soluble in water. This approach is a green, simple, and catalyst-free approach under an ambient environment. Apart from these merits, this novel technique allows researchers to choose and design interesting solid targets and to use an electrochemical approach toward the fabrication of polyoxometalate nanostructures for the purpose of fundamental research and for potential applications. Using the synthesis of Cu(3)Mo(2)O(9) nanorods as an example, we substantiate the validity of the proposed strategy. For the fabrication of Cu(3)Mo(2)O(9) nanostructures, we chose molybdenum as a solid target for laser ablation in liquid copper electrodes for the electrochemical reaction and water as a solvent for the ECLAL synthesis. We successfully fabricated Cu(3)(OH)(2)(MoO(4))(2) nanorods with magnetic properties. Interestingly, we obtained well-defined Cu(3)Mo(2)O(9) nanorods by annealing the Cu(3)(OH)(2)(MoO(4))(2) nanostructures at 500 °C. Additionally, the basic physics and chemistry involved in the ECLAL fabrication of nanostructures are discussed.

Synthesis, magnetic properties, and magnetic structure of a natrochalcite structural variant, KM(II)2D3O2(MoO4)2 (M = Mn, Fe, or Co)

We report the syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of KMn(2)(H(3)O(2))(MoO(4))(2) (MnH), KMn(2)(D(3)O(2))(MoO(4))(2) (MnD), KFe(2)(H(3)O(2))(MoO(4))(2) (FeH), KFe(2)(D(3)O(2))(MoO(4))(2) (FeD), KCo(2)(H(3)O(2))(MoO(4))(2) (CoH), and KCo(2)(D(3)O(2))(MoO(4))(2) (CoD), and the magnetic structures of MnD and FeD. They belong to the structural variant (space group I2/m) of the mineral natrochalcite NaCu(2)(H(3)O(2))(SO(4))(2) (space group C2/m) where the diagonal within the ac-plane of the latter become one axis of the former. The structure of MnD, obtained from Rietveld refinement of a high-resolution neutron pattern taken at 300 K, consists of chains of edge-sharing octahedra bridged by MoO(4) and D(3)O(2) to form layers, which are connected to K through the oxygen atoms to form the three-dimensional (3D)-network. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns of the other two compounds were found to belong to the same space group with similar parameters. The magnetic susceptibilities of MnH and FeH exhibit long-range ordering of the moments at a Néel temperature of 8 and 11 K, respectively, which are accompanied by additional strong Bragg reflections in the neutron diffraction in the ordered state, consistent with antiferromagnetism. Analyses of the neutron data for MnD and FeD reveal the presence of both long- and short-range orderings and commensurate magnetic structures with a propagation vector of (½, 0, ½). The moments are antiferromagnetically ordered within the chains with alternation between chains to generate four nonequivalent nuclear unit cells. For MnD the moments are perpendicular to the chain axis (b-axis) while for FeD they are parallel to the b-axis. The overall total is a fully compensated magnetic structure with zero moment in each case. Surprisingly, for KCo(2)(D(3)O(2))(MoO(4))(2) neither additional peaks nor increase of the nuclear peaks' intensities were observed in the neutron diffraction patterns below the magnetic anomaly at 12 K which was identified to originate from a small quantity of a ferromagnetic compound, Co(2)(OH)(2)MoO(4).
