Abstract
Previously, we found that linear quinol-containing ligands could allow manganese complexes to act as functional mimics of superoxide dismutase (SOD). The redox activity of the quinol enables even Zn(ii) complexes with these ligands to catalyze superoxide degradation. As we were investigating the abilities of manganese and iron complexes with 1,8-bis(2,5-dihydroxybenzyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (H4qp4) to act as redox-responsive contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we found evidence that they could also catalyze the dismutation of H2O2. Here, we investigate the antioxidant behavior of Mn(ii), Fe(ii), and Zn(ii) complexes with H4qp4. Although the H4qp4 complexes are relatively poor mimetics of SOD, with only the manganese complex displaying above-baseline catalysis, all three display extremely potent catalase activity. The ability of the Zn(ii) complex to catalyze the degradation of H2O2 demonstrates that the use of a redox-active ligand can enable redox-inactive metals to catalyze the decomposition of reactive oxygen species (ROS) besides superoxide. The results also demonstrate that the ligand framework can tune antioxidant activity towards specific ROS.

ROS scavenging of SOD/CAT mimics probed by EPR and reduction of lipid peroxidation in S. cerevisiae and mouse liver, under severe hydroxyl radical stress condition. J Inorg Biochem 2023; 239:112062. Abstract
The interaction between CuII, FeIII and MnII complexes, derived from the ligands 1-[bis(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)amino]-3-chloropropan-2-ol (hpclnol) and bis(pyridine-2-ylmethyl)amine (bpma), and the free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)hydrazyl (DPPH) and reactive oxygen species (ROS), was investigated by colorimetric and EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) techniques. A comparison between these results and those reported to [Mn(salen)Cl] or EUK-8 was also addressed. EPR studies allowed us the identification of intermediates species such as superoxide‑copper(I) and superoxide‑copper(II), a mixed-valence FeIIIFeII species and a 16-line feature attributed to MnIII-oxo-MnIV species. The biomarker malondialdehyde (MDA) was determined by TBARS assay in S. cerevisiae cells, and the determination of the IC50 indicate that the antioxidant activity shown dependence on the metal center (CuII ≈ FeIII > MnII ≈ [Mn(salen)Cl]. The lipid peroxidation attenuation was also investigated in liver homogenates obtained from Swiss mice and the IC50 values were in the nanomolar concentrations. We demonstrated here that all the complexes interact with the free radical DPPH and with ROS (H2O2, O2•- and hydroxyl radical), enhancing the cellular protection against oxidative stress generated by hydroxyl radical, employing two experimental model systems, S. cerevisiae (in vivo) and mouse liver (ex vivo).

Abstract
Two mixed-valence Mn(II)Mn(III) complexes, [Mn2L1(OAc)2(H2O)]BPh4·2.5H2O and [Mn2L2(OAc)2]·4H2O, obtained with unsymmetrical N4O2-hexadentate L1(2-) (H2L1 = 2-(N,N-bis(2-(pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl)-6-(N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)benzylaminomethyl)-4-methylphenol) and N4O3-heptadentate L2(3-) (NaH2L2 = 2-(N,N-bis(2-(pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl)-6-(N'-(2-hydroxybenzyl)(carboxymethyl)aminomethyl)-4-methylphenol sodium salt) ligands, have been prepared and characterized. Both complexes share a μ-phenolate-bis(μ-acetate)Mn(II)Mn(III) core and N3O3-coordination sphere around the Mn(II) ion, but differ in the donor groups surrounding Mn(III) (NO4(solvent) and NO5). In non-protic solvents, these two complexes are able to disproportionate at least 3600 equiv. of H2O2 without significant decomposition, with first-order dependence on catalyst and saturation kinetics on [H2O2]. Spectroscopic monitoring of the reaction mixtures revealed the two complexes disproportionate H2O2 employing a different redox cycle, with retention of dinuclearity. The higher catalytic efficiency of [Mn2L2(OAc)2] was rationalized in terms of the larger labilizing effect of the heptadentate ligand that favors the acetate-shift and the replacement of the non-coordinating benzyl arm of L1 by a carboxylate arm in L2 which facilitates the formation of the catalyst-H2O2 adduct, placing [Mn2L2(OAc)2] as the most efficient among the phenolate-bridged diMn catalysts based on the kcat/KM criterion.

Abstract
A new phenoxo-bridged diMnIII complex, Na[Mn2L(OH)2(H2O)2]·5H2O (1), obtained with the ligand L5- = 5‑methyl‑2‑hydroxo‑1,3‑xylene‑α,α‑diamine‑N,N,N',N'‑tetraacetato, has been prepared and characterized. Mass spectrometry, conductivity, UV-visible, EPR and 1H NMR spectroscopic studies showed that the complex exists in solution as a monoanionic diMnIII complex. Complex 1 catalyzes H2O2 disproportionation with second-order rate constant kcat = 305(9) M-1 min-1 and without a time-lag phase. Based on spectroscopic results, the catalase activity of complex 1 in methanol involves a MnIII2/MnII2 redox cycle, which distinguishes this catalyst from other phenoxo-bridged diMn complexes that cycle between MnIIMnIII/MnIIIMnIV species. Addition of base stabilizes the catalyst, restrains demetallation during catalysis and causes moderate enhancement of catalase activity. The terminal carboxylate donors of 1 not only contribute as internal bases to assist deprotonation of H2O2 but also favor the formation of active homovalent diMn species, just as observed for the enzyme.

Abstract
The coordination chemistries of the tetradentate N2O2-type ligands N-(2-pyridylmethyl)iminodiethanol (H2pmide) and N-(2-pyridylmethyl)iminodiisopropanol (H2pmidip) have been investigated with nickel(ii) and cobalt(ii/iii) ions. Three novel complexes prepared and characterized are [(Hpmide)2Ni3(CH3COO)4] (1), [(Hpmide)2Co3(CH3COO)4] (2), and [(pmidip)2Co3(CH3COO)4] (3). In 1 and 2, two terminal nickel(ii)/cobalt(ii) units are coordinated to one Hpmide(-) and two CH3CO2(-). The terminal units are each connected to a central nickel(ii)/cobalt(ii) cation through one oxygen atom of Hpmide(-) and two oxygen atoms of acetate ions, giving rise to nickel(ii) and cobalt(ii) trinuclear complexes, respectively. Trinuclear complexes 1 and 2 are isomorphous. In 3, two terminal cobalt(iii) units are coordinated to pmidip(2-) and two CH3CO2(-). The terminal units are each linked to a central cobalt(ii) cation through two oxygen atoms of pmidip(2-) and one oxygen atom of a bidentate acetate ion, resulting in a linear trinuclear mixed-valence cobalt complex. 1 shows a weak ferromagnetic interaction with the ethoxo and acetato groups between the nickel(ii) ions (g = 2.24, J = 2.35 cm(-1)). However, 2 indicates a weak antiferromagnetic coupling with the ethoxo and acetato groups between the cobalt(ii) ions (g = 2.37, J = -0.5 cm(-1)). Additionally, 3 behaves as a paramagnetic cobalt(ii) monomer, due to the diamagnetic cobalt(iii) ions in the terminal units (g = 2.53, |D| = 36.0 cm(-1)). No catalytic activity was observed in 1. However, 2 and 3 showed significant catalytic activities toward various olefins with modest to good yields. 3 was slightly less efficient toward olefin epoxidation reaction than 2. Also 2 was used for terminal olefin oxidation reaction and was oxidised to the corresponding epoxides in moderate yields (34-75%) with conversions ranging from 47-100%. The cobalt complexes 2 and 3 promoted the O-O bond cleavage to ∼75% heterolysis and ∼25% homolysis.

Abstract
In this work, we present the synthesis and characterization of two new mononuclear complexes with the ligand 1,3-bis[(2-aminoethyl)amino]-2-propanol (HL), [Co(L)(H2O)](ClO4)2 (1), [Ni(HL)](ClO4)2 (2), as well as the known complex [Cu(HL)](ClO4)2 (3) for comparison. Their abilities to catalyze the dismutation of H2O2 and the oxidation of cyclohexane were investigated. The complexes were characterized by X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, electronic and infrared spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and conductivity measurements. The X-ray structures showed that the nickel (2) and copper (3) complexes are tetracoordinated, with the metal ion bound to the nitrogen atoms of the ligand. On the other hand, the cobalt complex (1) is hexacoordinated, possessing additional bonds to the alkoxo group of the ligand and to a water molecule. Neither of the complexes was able to catalyze the oxidation of cyclohexane, but all of them exhibited catalase-like activity, following Michaelis-Menten kinetics, which suggest resemblance with the catalase natural enzymes. The catalytic activity followed the order: [Ni(HL)](ClO4)2 (2) > [Cu(HL)](ClO4)2 (3) > [Co(L)(H2O)](ClO4)2 (1). As far as we know, this is the first description of a nickel complex presenting a significant catalase-like activity.
