Self-Assembly and Host−Guest Interaction of Metallomacrocycles Using Fluorescent Dipyrazole Linker with Dimetallic Clips

Pathway selection in the self-assembly of Rh4L4 coordination squares under kinetic control

Pathway selection principles in reversible reaction networks such as molecular self-assembly have not been established yet, because achieving kinetic control in reversible reaction networks is more complicated than in irreversible ones. In this study, we discovered that coordination squares consisting of cis-protected dinuclear rhodium(II) corner complexes and linear ditopic ligands are assembled under kinetic control, perfectly preventing the corresponding triangles, by modulating their energy landscapes with a weak monotopic carboxylate ligand (2,6-dichlorobenzoate: dcb-) as the leaving ligand. Experimental and numerical approaches revealed the self-assembly pathway where the cyclization step to form the triangular complex is blocked by dcb-. It was also found that one of the molecular squares assembled into a dimeric structure owing to the solvophobic effect, which was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Rhenium-Pyrazolyl-Based Figure-Eight- and Z-Shaped Metallocycles: Self-Assembly, Solid-State Structures, Dynamic Properties in Solution, and Competitive Ligand-Induced Supramolecular Transformations into Rhenium-Pyridyl/-Benzimidazolyl/-Phosphine-Based Metallocycles/Acyclic Complexes

Rhenium(I)tricarbonyl core-based heteroleptic "figure-eight"- and Z-shaped metallocycles (1a-4a) of the general formula fac-[{(CO)3Re(μ-L)Re(CO)3}2(dppz)2] were self-assembled from Re2(CO)10, H2-L (H2-L = 5,8-dihydroxy-1,4-naphthaquinone (H2-dhnq) for 1a; 1,4-dihydroxy-9,10-anthraquinone (H2-dhaq) for 2a; 6,11-dihydroxy-5,12-naphthacenedione (H2-dhnd) for 3a; 2,2'-bisbenzimidazole (H2-bbim) for 4a), and bis(4-((pyrazolyl)methyl)phenylmethane) (dppz) via one-pot coordination-driven synthetic approach. The molecular structures of 1a and 4a were unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) methods. The metallocycles in the DMSO solution exist as an acyclic dinuclear-DMSO adduct of the general formula fac-[{(CO)3Re(μ-L)Re(CO)3}(DMSO)2] (1b, L = dhnq; 2b, L = dhaq; 3b, L = dhnd; 4b, L = bbim) and dppz, which are in dynamic equilibrium. The dynamic behavior of the rhenium-pyrazolyl bond in the solution state was effectively utilized to transform metallocycles 1a-4a into pyridyl/benzimidazolyl/phosphine donor-based heteroleptic metallocycles and acyclic dinuclear complexes (4-13). These include tetranuclear rectangles fac-[{(CO)3Re(μ-L)Re(CO)3}2(4,4'-bpy)2] (4 and 11, L = dhaq for 4 and bbim for 11), dinuclear metallocycles fac-[{(CO)3Re(μ-L)Re(CO)3}(dpbim)] (5-7 and 12; L = dhnq for 5, dhaq for 6, dhnd for 7, and bbim for 12), and dinuclear acyclic complexes fac-[{(CO)3Re(μ-L)Re(CO)3}(PTA)2] (8-10 and 13; L = dhnq for 8, dhaq for 9, dhnd for 10, and bbim for 13). These transformations were achieved through component-induced supramolecular reactions while treating with competitive ligands 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy), bis(4-((1H-benzoimidazole-1-yl)methyl)phenyl)methane (dpbim), and 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA). The reaction mixture in the solution was analyzed using NMR and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analysis. Additionally, crystal structures of 4, 6, and 13, which were obtained in the mixture of the solutions, were determined, providing unequivocal evidence for the occurrence of supramolecular transformation within the system. The results reveal that the size of the chelating ligand and the pyrazolyl donor angle of the ditopic ligand play crucial roles in determining the resulting solid-state metallacyclic architecture in these synthetic combinations. The dynamic behavior of the rhenium-pyrazolyl bond in the metallocycles can be utilized to transform into other metallocycles and acyclic complexes using suitable competing ligands via ligand-induced supramolecular transformations.

[M8L4]8+-Type Squares Self-Assembled by Dipalladium Corners and Bridging Aromatic Dipyrazole Ligands for Iodine Capture

Square-like metallamacrocyclic palladium(II) complexes [M₈L₄]⁸⁺ (1-7) were synthesized by reacting aromatic dipyrazole ligands (H₂L¹-H₂L³ with pyromellitic arylimide-, 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic arylimide-, and anthracene-based aromatic groups, respectively) with dipalladium corners ([(bpy)₂Pd₂(NO₃)₂](NO₃)₂, [(dmbpy)₂Pd₂(NO₃)₂](NO₃)₂, or [(phen)₂Pd₂(NO₃)₂](NO₃)₂, where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, dmbpy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine, and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) in aqueous solutions via metal-directed self-assembly. Metallamacrocycles 1-7 were fully characterized by ¹H and ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and the square structure of 7·8NO₃^- was further confirmed via single crystal X-ray diffraction. These square-like metallamacrocycles exhibit effective performance for iodine adsorption.

Photocatalysis in Supramolecular Fluorescent Metallacycles and Metallacages

The utilization of photocatalytic techniques for achieving light-to-fuel conversion is a promising way to ease the shortage of energy and degradation of the ecological environment. Fluorescent metallacycles and metallacages have drawn considerable attention and have been used in widespread fields due to easy preparation and their abundant functionality including photocatalysis. This review covers recent advances in photocatalysis in discrete supramolecular fluorescent metallacycles and metallacages. The developments in the utilization of the metallacycles skeletons and the effect of fluorescence-resonance energy transfer for photocatalysis are discussed. Furthermore, the use of the ligands decorated by organic chromophores or redox metal sites in metallacages as photocatalysts and their ability to encapsulate appropriate catalytic cofactors for photocatalysis are summarized. For the sake of brevity, macrocycles and cages with inorganic coordination complexes such as ruthenium complexes and iridium complexes are not included in this minireview.

Gold-Clip-Assisted Self-Assembly and Proton-Coupled Expansion-Contraction of a Cofacial FeIII -Porphyrin Cage

A molecular cage {Au₈ (μ-PAnP)₄ [Fe(H₂ O)₂ (TPyP)]₂ (OTf)₂ }(OTf)₈ (1) composed of two cofacial Fe^III -porphyrin can be self-assembled from the gold clip [Au₂ (PAnP)Cl₂ ] and Fe³⁺ (H₂ O)₂ (TPyP)⁺ (PAnP=9,10-bis(diphenylphosphino)anthracene, TPyP=meso-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrinato). The height of the cage is 8.579(3) Å. The addition of a base to a solution of the cage leads to a contracted and twisted cage {[Au₈ (μ-PAnP)₄ [Fe₂ (μ-O)(TPyP)₂ ]}(OTf)₈ (2), which has a height of ≈4.4 Å and porphyrin-porphyrin torsional angle of ≈20°. The contracted cage can be synthesized independently from the gold clip and Fe₂ (μ-O)(TPyP)₂ . The spectroscopy and crystal structure of an unclipped analog of the contracted cage, {[AuPPh₃ )₈ [Fe₂ (μ-O)(TPyP)₂ ]}(OTf)₈ (3), supports the DFT-calculated structure of 2. NMR and UV/Vis titrations show that the expansion-untwisting and contraction-twisting of the cage is reversible.

Hierarchical self-assembly of a fluorescence emission-enhanced organogelator and its multiple stimuli-responsive behaviors

A discrete hexagonal metallacycle 1 decorated with tetraphenylethylene, amide groups and long hydrophobic alkyl chains was constructed via [3 + 3] coordination-driven self-assembly, from which the fluorescence emission-enhanced organogelator with multiple stimuli-responsiveness was successfully prepared via hierarchical self-assembly.

Programmable self-assembly of water-soluble organo-heterometallic cages [M12M'4L12] using 3-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)pentane-2,4-dione (H2L)

A bifunctional ligand H₂L featuring primary (pyrazole) and secondary (acetylacetone) coordination sites was preferentially reacted with dimetallic [M₂(NO₃)₂](NO₃)₂ linkers at the pyrazolyl end of H₂L, giving rise to dimetallic corners. Subsequently, the corners serve as the secondary site with M' to form water-soluble organo-heterometallic [M₁₂M'₄L₁₂] cages in a stepwise mode.

Self-assembled half-sandwich polyhedral cages via flexible Schiff-base ligands: an unusual macrocycle-to-cage conversion

Half-sandwich M₆(L1)₄ octahedral and M₈(L2)₄ cubic cages have been assembled by flexible Schiff-base ligands upon coordination to Cp*Rh(iii) organometallic acceptors. In particular, the Rh(iii)-based half-sandwich M₂(HL1)₂ macrocycle rearranges in solution to give a M₆(L1)₄ cage.

Recent advances in the construction of fluorescent metallocycles and metallocages via coordination-driven self-assembly

During the last few years, the construction of fluorescent metallocycles and metallocages has attracted considerable attention because of their wide applications in fluorescence detection of metal ions, anions, or small molecules, mimicking complicated natural photo-processes, and preparing photoelectric devices, etc. This perspective focuses on the recent advances in the construction of a variety of fluorescent metallocycles and metallocages via coordination-driven self-assembly. In addition, the fluorescence properties and the applications of these organometallic architectures have also been discussed.

A dodecanuclear copper(ii) cage self-assembled from six dicopper building units

Sandwich capping of two {Cu₃(μ₃-NO₃)}⁵⁻ triangles over a hydroxido-bridged {Cu₆} hexagon, supported by six ligands resulted in a novel Cu₁₂ cage in a flattened cuboctahedral topology.

Trigonal prismatic Cu(I) and Ag(I) pyrazolato nanocage hosts: encapsulation of S8 and hydrocarbon guests

Two neutral hexanuclear trigonal prismatic cage molecules have been synthesized by coupling two planar triangular M3pz3-panels, M = Cu(I) and Ag(I), in eclipsed geometry. The ~230 Å(3) cage volume can be either vacant or occupied by neutral guests. The crystal structures of the M6-cyclohexane and Ag6-S8 host-guest species have been determined.

Self-assembly of Cationic, Hetero- or Homo-nuclear Ru(II) Macrocyclic Rectangles and their Photophysical, Electrochemical and Biological Studies

A series of supramolecular rectangles, including two mixed-metal Ru/Pt complexes, have been formed by the coordination-driven self-assembly of a range of arene-Ru "molecular clip" acceptors (1a-1d) with rigid dipyridyl-based ligands (2a-2d) over the course of 10 hours in solution. The isolated products were characterized by multinuclear NMR ((1)H and (13)C or (31)P), HR-ESI-MS and an X-ray diffraction study to support the ascribed two-component rectangular structures. The rectangles were further characterized by UV-Vis and fluorescence studies. The redox behaviors of rectangles 3ca and 3da were also determined using cyclic voltammetry. Additionally, the antitumor activities of the suite of rectangles were determined against various human cancer cell lines and significant activity was shown by complexes 3ca, 3da, 3cb, 3cc and 3cd, with IC(50) values as low as 2.65 μM.

Synthesis and anion sensing of water-soluble metallomacrocycles

The self-assembly of (TMEDA)Pd(NO(3))(2) or (TMEDA)Pt(NO(3))(2) (where TMEDA = N(1),N(1),N(2),N(2)-tetramethylethane-1,2-diamine) and anthracene- or ferrocene-based diimidazole ligands (L(1-3)) in aqueous solution affords a series of positively charged [M(2)L(2)](4+) dimetallomacrocycles. Their structures were characterized by (1)H NMR and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and in the cases of {[(TMEDA)Pd](2)L(1)(2)}(NO(3))(4) (1), {[(TMEDA)Pd](2)L(1)(2)}(PF(6))(4) (1a), and {[(TMEDA)Pd](2)L(3)(2)}(NO(3))(4) (4) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Interestingly, the NMR spectra of 1 and 1a revealed that the difference of their structures, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis, was that a NO(3)(-) of 1 was encapsulated inside the cavity of the basket-shaped metallomacrocycle by C-H···O hydrogen bonds, while PF(6)(-) of 1a was bound outside by C-H···F hydrogen bonds. The fluorescence titration experiment exhibited the formation of 1:1 host-guest complexation for anthracene-based positively charged [M(2)L(2)](4+)-type metallomacrocycles with NO(3)(-). The interactions between metallomacrocycles and various anions were investigated via fluorescence titration and cyclic voltammetry studies, respectively.

Container molecules based on imine type ligands

This chapter will give a short overview about container molecules, their synthesis and possible applications. The main focus is on those which are based on imine type ligands. These containers can be used for example for guest exchange, gas separation, as chemical sensors or for the stabilisation of white phosphorus under water. The described cages have wide openings or tightly closed ones. For one cage the reversible opening and closing is also described.
