Abstract
In this study, an easily synthesizable Schiff base probe TQSB having a quinoline fluorophore is demonstrated as a fluorescent and colorimetric turn-on sensor for Al3+ ions in a semi-aqueous medium (CH3CN/water; 4 : 1; v/v). Absorption, emission and colorimetric studies clearly indicated that TQSB exhibited a high selectivity toward Al3+, as observed from its excellent binding constant (Kb = 3.8 × 106 M-1) and detection limit (7.0 nM) values. TQSB alone was almost non-fluorescent in nature; however, addition of Al3+ induced intense fluorescence at 414 nm most probably due to combined CHEF (chelation-enhanced fluorescence) and restricted PET effects. The sensing mechanism was established via Job's plot, NMR spectroscopy, ESI-mass spectrometry, and density functional theory (DFT) analyses. Furthermore, to evaluate the applied potential of probe TQSB, its sensing ability was studied in real samples such as soil samples and Al3+-containing Digene gastric tablets as well as on low-cost filter paper strips. Fluorescence microscopy imaging experiments further revealed that TQSB can be used as an effective probe to detect intracellular Al3+ in live cells with no cytotoxicity.

Abstract
Although transition metals constitute less than 0.1% of the total mass within a human body, they have a substantial impact on fundamental biological processes across all kingdoms of life. Indeed, these nutrients play crucial roles in the physiological functions of enzymes, with the redox properties of many of these metals being essential to their activity. At the same time, imbalances in transition metal pools can be detrimental to health. Modern analytical techniques are helping to illuminate the workings of metal homeostasis at a molecular and atomic level, their spatial localization in real time, and the implications of metal dysregulation in disease pathogenesis. Fluorescence microscopy has proven to be one of the most promising non-invasive methods for studying metal pools in biological samples. The accuracy and sensitivity of bioimaging experiments are predominantly determined by the fluorescent metal-responsive sensor, highlighting the importance of rational probe design for such measurements. This review covers activity- and binding-based fluorescent metal sensors that have been applied to cellular studies. We focus on the essential redox-active metals: iron, copper, manganese, cobalt, chromium, and nickel. We aim to encourage further targeted efforts in developing innovative approaches to understanding the biological chemistry of redox-active metals.

Abstract
Self-indicating polymers have emerged as a promising class of smart materials that possess the unique ability to undergo detectable variations in their physical or chemical properties in response to various stimuli. This article presents an overview of the most important mechanisms through which these materials exhibit self-indication, including aggregation, phase transition, covalent and non-covalent bond cleavage, isomerization, charge transfer, and energy transfer. Aggregation is a prevalent mechanism observed in self-indicating polymers, where changes in the degree of molecular organization result in variations in optical or electrical properties. Phase transition-induced self-indication relies on the transformation between different phases, such as liquid-to-solid or crystalline-to-amorphous transitions, leading to observable changes in color or conductivity. Covalent bond cleavage-based self-indicating polymers undergo controlled degradation or fragmentation upon exposure to specific triggers, resulting in noticeable variations in their structural or mechanical properties. Isomerization is another crucial mechanism exploited in self-indicating polymers, where the reversible transformation between the different isomeric forms induces detectable changes in fluorescence or absorption spectra. Charge transfer-based self-indicating polymers rely on the modulation of electron or hole transfer within the polymer backbone, manifesting as changes in electrical conductivity or redox properties. Energy transfer is an essential mechanism utilized by certain self-indicating polymers, where energy transfer between chromophores or fluorophores leads to variations in the emission characteristics. Furthermore, this review article highlights the diverse range of applications for self-indicating polymers. These materials find particular use in sensing and monitoring applications, where their responsive nature enables them to act as sensors for specific analytes, environmental parameters, or mechanical stress. Self-indicating polymers have also been used in the development of smart materials, including stimuli-responsive coatings, drug delivery systems, food sensors, wearable devices, and molecular switches. The unique combination of tunable properties and responsiveness makes self-indicating polymers highly promising for future advancements in the fields of biotechnology, materials science, and electronics.

Abstract
We have prepared a simple, universal and efficient coumarin-derived fluorescent probe (XDS1) to detecting HOCl. The experimental findings revealed that the introduction of HOCl produced an obvious quenching effect on the probe with high selectivity and sensitivity. The calculated limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 0.02 μM. Furthermore, an impressive response time of less than 10 s was observed when XDS1 detecting HOCl. Importantly, the probe XDS1 exhibited negligible cytotoxicity, thereby facilitating its application for imaging HOCl within biological environment. The probe XDS1 had been successfully used for specific detection in cells.

Abstract
The CN bond isomerization/modulation as a fluorescence signalling mechanism was explored by studying the photophysical properties of conformationally restricted molecules. From the beginning, the CN bond isomerization method has attracted the attention of researchers owing to its simplicity, high selectivity, and sensitivity in fluorescence evaluation. Continuous developments in the field of sensing using CN bond-containing compounds have been achieved via the customization of the isomerization process around the CN bond in numerous ways, and the results were obtained in the form of specific discrete photophysical changes. CN isomerization causes significant fluorescence enhancement in response to detected metal cations and other reactive species (Cys, Hys, ClO-, etc.) straightforwardly and effectively. This review sheds light on the process of CN bond isomerization/modulation as a signalling mechanism depending on fluorescence changes via conformational restriction. In addition, CN bond isomerization-based fluorescent sensors have yet to be well reviewed, although several fluorescent sensors based on this signalling mechanism have been reported. Therefore, CN-based fluorescent sensors are summarized in this review.

Abstract
A simple fluorescence chemosensor of FHS-OH based on salicylaldehyde Schiff base was developed via a one-step reaction, which achieved a fast and highly selective response for Al(iii). Mechanism studies showed that when FHS-OH was exposed to Al(iii) with 1 : 2 binding stoichiometry in an aqueous solution at neutral pH, C[double bond, length as m-dash]N isomerization and PET processes were limited, resulting in a 'turn-on' fluorescence response with a low detection limit of 63 nmol L-1 and a satisfying linear range of 0.0-20.0 μmol L-1. Compared to traditional detection methods for Al(iii), fluorometry using FHS-OH has several advantages, including simplicity, quick response, and capability of real-time detection. More importantly, the detection of Al(iii) on a solid matrix (test paper) was successfully achieved. After the addition of Al(iii), a significant emission colour change from green to bright blue was observed by the naked eye owing to the intrinsic aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic of FHS-OH.

Abstract
Acid-base equilibria play a critical role in biological processes and environmental systems. The development of innovative fluorescent polymeric materials to monitor acid-base equilibria is highly desirable. Herein, a novel catalyst-free click polymerization of aldehyde-activated internal diynes and dithiols was established, and exclusively Markovnikov poly(formyl sulfide)s (PFSs) with high molecular weights and moderate stereoregularity were produced in high yields. Because of the aromatic units and sulfur atoms in their main chains, these polymers possessed high refractive index values. By introducing the fluorene and aldehyde moieties, the resulting PFSs could act as a fluorescent sensor for sensitive hydrazine detection. Taking advantage of the reaction of the aldehyde group and hydrazine, imino-PFSs with remarkable and reversible fluorescence change through alternating fumigation with HCl and NH3 were easily acquired and further applied in multicolor patterning, a rewritable material and quadruple-mode information encryption. Additionally, a test strip of protonated imino-polymer for the tracking of bioamines in situ generated from marine product spoilage was also demonstrated. Collectively, this work not only provides a powerful click polymerization to enrich the multiplicity of sulfur-containing materials, but also opens up enormous opportunities for these functional polysulfides in diverse applications.

Abstract
Metal bound macrocyclic compounds found in biological systems inspired us to design and synthesize two Robson-type macrocyclic Schiff-base chemosensors, H 2 L1 (H 2 L1=1,11-dimethyl-6,16-dithia-3,9,13,19-tetraaza-1,11(1,3)-dibenzenacycloicosaphane-2,9,12,19-tetraene-1,11-diol) and H 2 L2 (H 2 L2=1,11-dimethyl-6,16-dioxa-3,9,13,19-tetraaza-1,11(1,3)-dibenzenacycloicosaphane-2,9,12,19-tetraene-1,11-diol). Both the chemosensors have been characterized with different spectroscopic techniques. They act as multianalyte sensor and exhibit "turn-on" fluorescence toward different metal ions in 1X PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline) solution. In presence of Zn2+, Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions, H 2 L1 exhibits ∼6-fold enhancement of emission intensity, while H 2 L2 shows ∼6-fold enhancement of emission intensity in the presence of Zn2+, Al3+ and Cr3+ ions. The interaction between the different metal ion and chemosensor have been examined by absorption, emission, and 1H NMR spectroscopy as well as by ESI-MS+ analysis. We have successfully isolated and solved the crystal structure of the complex [Zn(H 2 L1)(NO3)]NO3 (1) by X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of 1 shows 1:1 metal:ligand stoichiometry and helps to understand the observed PET-Off-CHEF-On sensing mechanism. LOD values of H 2 L1 and H 2 L2 toward metal ions are found to be ∼10-8 and ∼10-7 M, respectively. Large Stokes shifts of the probes against analytes (∼100 nm) make them a suitable candidate for biological cell imaging studies. Robson type phenol based macrocyclic fluorescence sensors are very scarce in the literature. Therefore, the tuning of structural parameters as the number and nature of donor atoms, their relative locations and presence of rigid aromatic groups can lead to the design of new chemosensors, which can accommodate different charged/neutral guest(s) inside its cavity. The study of the spectroscopic properties of this type of macrocyclic ligands and their complexes might open a new avenue of chemosensors.

Abstract
A novel turn-on fluorescence probe L has been designed that exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity with a detection limit of 9.53 × 10−8 mol/L for the quantification of Zn2+. 1H-NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the unsymmetrical nature of the structure of the Schiff base probe L. An emission titration experiment in the presence of different molar fractions of Zn2+ was used to perform a Job’s plot analysis. The results showed that the stoichiometric ratio of the complex formed by L and Zn2+ was 1:1. Moreover, the molecular structure of the mononuclear Cu complex reveals one ligand L coordinates with one Cu atom in the asymmetric unit. On adding CuCl2 to the ZnCl2/L system, a Cu-Zn complex was formed and a strong quenching behavior was observed, which inferred that the Cu2+ displaced Zn2+ to coordinate with the imine nitrogen atoms and hydroxyl oxygen atoms of probe L.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and theoretical study of two new colorimetric chemosensors with special selectivity and sensitivity to Ni2+ and Cu2+ ions over other metal cations in the CH3CN/H2O solution. Compounds (E)-4-((2-nitrophenyl)diazenyl)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)aniline (A) and (E)-4-((3-nitrophenyl)diazenyl)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)aniline (B) exhibited a drastic color change from yellow to colorless, which allows the detection of the mentioned metal cations through different techniques. The interaction of sensors with these metal ions induced a new absorption band with a hypsochromic shift to the characteristic signal of the free sensors. A theoretical study via time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) was performed. This method has enabled us to reproduce the hypsochromic shift in the maximum UV-vis absorption band and explain the selective sensing of the ions. For all of the systems studied, the absorption band is characterized by a π → π* transition centered in the ligand. Instead of Ni2+ and Cu2+ ions, the transition is set toward the σ* molecular orbital with a strong contribution of the 3dx2-y2 transition (π → 3dx2-y2). These absorptions imply a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) mechanism that results in the hypsochromic shift in the absorption band of these systems.

Abstract
A simple julolidine based chemosensor (JT) was designed and synthesized by single condensation step. JT displayed excellent selectivity and sensitivity with on-off responses towards Zn2+ and Cu2+ over other biologically relevant metal ions in aqueous media. Upon addition of Zn2+ ions, JT exhibited a significant blue shift in emission followed by turn-on enhancement while with Cu2+, the fluorescence intensity of JT was completely vanished. The 1:1 binding affinity between JT and Zn2+/Cu2+ was proposed by Job's plot analysis. The detection limit for Zn2+ and Cu2+ ions reached at 3.5 × 10-8 M and 1.46 × 10-6 M, respectively. The sensing mechanism of JT with Zn2+/Cu2+ was supported by DFT calculations. Based on photophysical studies and its reversibility environment with EDTA, molecular logic gates were fabricated. Furthermore, JT was successfully established to detect intracellular Zn2+ ions in live cells by turn-on response.

Abstract
We designed and synthesized 4,4-di-(4'-methylmercaptophenoxy)-8-(N-methylpyridinium-2-yl)-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (probe 1) as a water-soluble BODIPY derivative for rapid and selective detection of hypochlorous acid. The pyridinium-2-yl linked at the meso position of BODIPY core was used to maintain highly fluorescent nature and to increase water solubility. Methylmercaptophenoxy was selected as responsive site installed on the boron atom (to replace the fluorine atom) and induced the photoinduced electron-transfer (PeT) effect to quench the fluorescence of BODIPY. The probe exhibited 83.9 μg mL-1 solubility in PBS (10 mM, pH 7.4), and possessed very low fluorescence (Φf = 0.0013). Upon addition of HClO, the probe could display a distinct response in 1 min and generate marked fluorescence enhancement by 100-fold due to the oxidation of thioether into sulfoxide to terminate PeT process. A limit of detection of 53 nM was calculated for HClO in the linear response range from 0 μM to 10 μM, and the probe was successfully applied to image HClO in living cells.

Abstract
In this study, a novel biocompatible fluorescent probe (DN) capable of detecting ClO- in physiological medium was rationally designed and synthesized from natural and renewable isolongifolanone. This probe underwent a highly specific and sensitive oxidation reaction with ClO- and liberated an isolongifolanone derivative (PA) emitting intensive blue fluorescence. In response to ClO-, the fluorescence emission of DN was obviously enhanced within a short time. The detection limit of DN toward ClO- was found to be as low as 5.86 × 10-9 M. IR, MS and DFT calculation were employed to further confirm the sensing mechanism. Moreover, the test strips coated with DN could easily recognize ClO- from other relevant species through the changes of fluorescence color under 365 nm UV lamp. More importantly, we also successfully demonstrated the potential application of DN for the detection of intracellular hypochloritein living cells.

Abstract
A novel bifunctional thiophene-based Schiff base TS as a colorimetric and fluorescent turn-on sensor for rapid and simultaneous detection of Al3+ and Zn2+ ions with high selectivity and sensitivity has been developed. The sensor shows remarkable fluorescence enhancement response for Al3+ and Zn2+ over a broad pH range with good anti-interference capability, which accompanied with an obvious color change easily detected by naked eyes. Sensor TS can detect as low as 3.7 × 10-9 M for Al3+ and 3.0 × 10-8 M for Zn2+, whereas respective association constants are 1.16 × 104 M-1 and 2.08 × 104 M-1. With the help of fluorescence titration and Job's plot, the stoichiometric ratio of TS with Al3+/Zn2+ was determined to be 1:1. The sensing mechanism of sensor TS with Al3+/Zn2+ based on the chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) was analyzed in detail through 1H NMR titration, FTIR, HRMS and DFT studies. Moreover, sensor TS has been applied to the detection of Al3+ and Zn2+ in real environmental water and food samples as well as the filter paper-based test strips. Furthermore, sensor TS has good cell-permeability and can be used to selectively sense intracellular Al3+ and Zn2+ by bioimaging.

[PMID: 26992539 DOI: 10.1016/j.talanta.2016.02.020] [Citation(s) in RCA: 39] [Impact Index Per Article: 4.9] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/16/2015] [Revised: 02/08/2016] [Accepted: 02/09/2016] [Indexed: 01/19/2023]
Abstract
A new fluoroionophore PyHC bearing 2-pyridylhydrazone and 7-hydroxycoumarin moieties for selective detection of Mg(2+) was synthesized and characterized. This chemosensor exhibited "turn-on" fluorescence behavior and was sensitive to Mg(2+) concentrations as low as 105 nmol L(-1) in ethanol-water solution. Detailed spectroscopic studies revealed the binding mode of a 1:1 complex between PyHC and Mg(2+) that leads to a fluorescence enhancement.

Abstract
A fluorescence probe, 8-formyl-7-hydroxyl-4-methyl coumarin - (2'-methylquinoline-4-formyl) hydrazone (L) has been synthesized. The chemosensor is found preferential binding to Al(3+) in presence of other competitive ions with associated changes in its optical and fluorescence spectra behavior. Upon addition of Al(3+) to a solution of L, it shows 200-fold enhancement of fluorescence intensity which might be attributed to form a 2:1 stoichiometry of the binding mode of LAl(III) and the chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) process at 479nm in ethanol. The lowest detection limit for Al(3+) is determined as 8.2×10(-7)M.
