Elaboration of Covalently Linked Polyoxometalates with Ruthenium and Pyrene Chromophores and Characteriation of Their Photophysical Properties

The effect of ionic versus covalent functionalization of polyoxometalate hybrid materials with coordinating subunits on their stability and interaction with DNA

Inorganic-organic hybrid materials that combine both Polyoxometalates (POMs) and metal ion coordinating subunits (CSUs) represent promising multifunctional materials. Though their individual components are often biologically active, utilization of hybrid materials in bioassays significantly depends on the functionalization method and thus resulting stability of the system. Quite intriguingly, these aspects were very scarcely studied in hybrid materials based on the Wells-Dawson POM (WD POM) scaffold and remain unknown. We chose two model WD POM hybrid systems to establish how the functionalization mode (ionic vs. covalent) affects their stability in biological medium and interaction with nucleic acids. The synthetic scope and limitations of the covalent POM-terpyridine hybrids were demonstrated and compared with the ionic Complex-Decorated Surfactant Encapsulated-Clusters (CD-SECs) hybrids. The nature of POM and CSU binding can be utilized to modulate the stability of the hybrid and the extent of DNA binding. The above systems show potential to behave as model cargo-platforms for potential utilization in medicine and pharmacy.

When Identification of the Reduction Sites in Mixed Molybdenum/Tungsten Keggin-Type Polyoxometalate Hybrids Turns Out Tricky

The mixed molybdenum/tungsten Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) hybrid (TBA)₄[PW₉Mo₂O₃₉{Sn(C₆H₄I)}] (TBA = tert-butylammonium) has been prepared by the reaction between [α-PW₉Mo₂O₃₉]^7– and [Cl₃Sn(C₆H₄I)] in dried acetonitrile, in the presence of tetra-n-butylammonium bromide. A further coupling reaction affords the ferrocenyl derivative (TBA)₄[PW₉Mo₂O₃₉{Sn(C₆H₄)C≡C(C₆H₄)Fc}]. The POM hybrids have been thoroughly characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopies. Electrochemical analysis confirms their ease of reduction compared to the all-W analogue, albeit with a second reduction process occurring at a lower potential than in the all-Mo species. It is noteworthy that the second reduction is accompanied by an unusual red shift of the electronic absorption spectrum. Whereas there is no doubt that the first reduction deals with Mo, the location of the second electron in the bireduced species, on the second Mo or on W, has thus been the subject of a cross-investigation by spectroelectrochemistry, electron spin resonance, and theoretical calculations. Finally, it came out that the second reduction is also Mo-centered with two unpaired and antiferromagnetically coupled extra electrons.

The sites for the successive reduction processes of a mixed molybdenum/tungsten Keggin-type organotin hybrid are debated through a combination of spectroelectrochemical investigations and theoretical calculations.

Metal-to-Metal Distance Modulated Au(I)/Ru(II) Cyclophanyl Complexes: Cooperative Effects in Photoredox Catalysis

The modular synthesis of Au(I)/Ru(II) decorated mono- and heterobimetallic complexes with π-conjugated [2.2]paracyclophane is described. [2.2]Paracyclophane serves as a rigid spacer which holds the metal centers in precise spatial orientations and allows metal-to-metal distance modulation. A broad set of architectural arrangements of pseudo -geminal, -ortho, -meta, and -para substitution patterns were employed. Metal-to-metal distance modulation of Au(I)/Ru(II) heterobimetallic complexes and the innate transannular π-communication of the cyclophanyl scaffold provides a promising platform for the investigations of structure-activity relationship and cooperative effects. The Au(I)/Ru(II) heterobimetallic cyclophanyl complexes are stable, easily accessible, and exhibit promising catalytic activity in the visible-light promoted arylative Meyer-Schuster rearrangement.

Tuning Photoinduced Electron Transfer in POM-Bodipy Hybrids by Controlling the Environment: Experiment and Theory

The optical and electrochemical properties of a series of polyoxometalate (POM) oxoclusters decorated with two bodipy (boron-dipyrromethene) light-harvesting units were examined. Evaluated here in this polyanionic donor-acceptor system is the effect of the solvent and associated counterions on the intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer. The results show that both solvents and counterions have a major impact upon the energy of the charge-transfer state by modifying the solvation shell around the POMs. This modification leads to a significantly shorter charge separation time in the case of smaller counterion and slower charge recombination in a less polar solvent. These results were rationalized in terms of Marcus theory and show that solvent and counterion both affect the driving force for photoinduced electron transfer and the reorganization energy. This was corroborated with theoretical investigations combining DFT and molecular dynamics simulations.

Acid-triggering of light-induced charge-separation in hybrid organic/inorganic molecular photoactive dyads for harnessing solar energy

Yield-not only Lifetime-of the Photoinduced Charge-Separated State in Iridium Complex-Polyoxometalate Dyads Impact Their Hydrogen Evolution Reactivity

Covalently linked photosensitizer-polyoxometalate (PS-POM) dyads are promising molecular systems for light-induced energy conversion processes, such as "solar" hydrogen generation. To date, very little is known of their fundamental photophysical properties which affect the catalytic reactivity and stability of the systems. PS-POM dyads often feature short-lived photoinduced charge-separated states, and the lifetimes of these states are considered crucial for the function of PS-POM dyads in molecular photocatalysis. Hence, strategies have been developed to extend the lifetimes of the photoinduced charge-separated states, either by tuning the PS photophysics or by tuning the POM redox properties. Recently, some of us reported PS-POM dyads based on cyclometalated Ir^III complexes covalently linked to Anderson-type polyoxometalate. Distinct hydrogen evolution reactivity (HER) of the dyads was observed, which was tuned by varying the central metal ion M of the POM_M (M=Mn³⁺ , Co³⁺ , Fe³⁺ ). In this manuscript, the photoinduced electron-transfer processes in the three Ir-POM_M dyads are investigated to rationalize the underlying reasons for the differences in HER activity observed. We report that upon excitation of the Ir^III complex, ultrafast (sub-ps) charge separation occurs, leading to different amounts of the charge-separated states (Ir^.+ -POM_M ^.- ) generated in the different dyads. However, in all dyads studied, the resulting Ir^.+ -POM_M ^.- species are short-lived (sub-ns) when compared to reference electron acceptors (e.g. porphyrins or fullerenes) reported in the literature. The reductive quenching of Ir^.+ -POM_M ^.- by a sacrificial donor, triethyl amine (1 m), to generate the intermediate Ir-POM_M ^.- is estimated to be very efficient (70-80 %) for all dyads studied. Based on this analyses, we conclude that the yield instead of the lifetime of the Ir^.+ -POM_M ^.- charge-separated state determines the catalytic capacity of the dyads investigated. This new feature in the PS-POM photophysics could lead to new design criteria for the development of novel PS-POM dyads.

Towards Covalent Photosensitizer-Polyoxometalate Dyads-Bipyridyl-Functionalized Polyoxometalates and Their Transition Metal Complexes

A triol-functionalized 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) derivative has been synthesized and used for the tris-alkoxylation of polyoxometalate (POM) precursors. The resultant POM-bpy conjugates of the Wells-Dawson- and Anderson-type feature a C-C bond as a linkage between the POM and bpy fragments. This structural motif is expected to increase the hydrolytic stability of the compounds. This is of particular relevance with respect to the application of POM-bpy metal complexes, as photocatalysts, in the hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER) in an aqueous environment. Accordingly, Rh(III) and Ir(III) complexes of the POM-bpy ligands have been prepared and characterized. These catalyst-photosensitizer dyads have been analyzed with respect to their electrochemical and photophysical properties. Cyclic and square-wave voltammetry, as well as UV/vis absorption and emission spectroscopy, indicated a negligible electronic interaction of the POM and metal-complex subunits in the ground state. However, emission-quenching experiments suggested an efficient intramolecular electron-transfer process from the photo-excited metal centers to the POM units to account for the non-emissive nature of the dyads (thus, suggesting a strong interaction of the subunits in the excited state). In-depth photophysical investigations, as well as a functional characterization, i.e., the applicability in the HER reaction, are currently ongoing.

Hybrid polyoxometalates as post-functionalization platforms: from fundamentals to emerging applications

Polyoxometalates (POMs) represent an important group of metal-oxo nanoclusters, typically comprised of early transition metals in high oxidation states (mainly V, Mo and W). Many plenary POMs exhibit good pH, solvent, thermal and redox stability, which makes them attractive components for the design of covalently integrated hybrid organic-inorganic molecules, herein referred to as hybrid-POMs. Until now, thousands of organic hybrid-POMs have been reported; however, only a small fraction can be further functionalized using other organic molecules or metal cations. This emerging class of 'post-functionalizable' hybrid-POMs constitute a valuable modular platform that permits coupling of POM properties with different organic and metal cation functionalities, thereby expanding the key physicochemical properties that are relevant for application in (photo)catalysis, bioinorganic chemistry and materials science. The post-functionalizable hybrid-POM platforms offer an opportunity to covalently link multi-electron redox responsive POM cores with virtually any (bio)organic molecule or metal cation, generating a wide range of materials with tailored properties. Over the past few years, these materials have been showcased in the preparation of framework materials, functional surfaces, surfactants, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and light harvesting materials, among others. This review article provides an overview on the state of the art in POM post-functionalization and highlights the key design and structural features that permit the discovery of new hybrid-POM platforms. In doing so, we aim to make the subject more comprehensible, both for chemists and for scientists with different materials science backgrounds interested in the applications of hybrid (POM) materials. The review article goes beyond the realms of polyoxometalate chemistry and encompasses emerging research domains such as reticular materials, surfactants, surface functionalization, light harvesting materials, non-linear optics, charge storing materials, and homogeneous acid-base catalysis among others.

Asymmetric Hybrid Polyoxometalates: A Platform for Multifunctional Redox-Active Nanomaterials

Access to asymmetrically functionalized polyoxometalates is a grand challenge as it could lead to new molecular nanomaterials with multiple or modular functionality. Now, a simple one‐pot synthetic approach to the isolation of an asymmetrically functionalized organic–inorganic hybrid Wells–Dawson polyoxometalate in good yield is presented. The cluster bears two organophosphonate moieties with contrasting physical properties: a chelating metal‐binding group, and a long aliphatic chain that facilitates solvent‐dependent self‐assembly into soft nanostructures. The orthogonal properties of the modular system are effectively demonstrated by controlled assembly of POM‐based redox‐active nanoparticles. This simple, high‐yielding synthetic method is a promising new approach to the preparation of multi‐functional hybrid metal oxide clusters, supermolecular systems, and soft‐nanomaterials.

Synthesis, structural characterization and fluorescence enhancement of chromophore-modified polyoxometalates

Intramolecular charge transfers between π-conjugated molecules and polyoxometalate (POM) clusters have been observed in donor-acceptor systems based on organic donors and inorganic POM acceptors, which unfortunately results in a general quenching of the chromophore luminescence. The development of POM-chromophore dyads that are capable of tackling the quenching process and enhancing the fluorescence intensity of such systems remains a highly challenging area of study. A family of organic-inorganic polyoxometalate <!?tlsb=-0.2pt>hybrids, {[(n-C₄H₉)₄N]₃[(MnMo₆O₂₄){(CH₂)₃CR}₂]} [1, R = -NHCH₂C₁₄H₉, namely (anthracen-9-ylmethyl)amino; 2, R = -NHCH₂C₁₃H₉, (9H-fluoren-2-ylmethyl)amino; 3, R = -NHCH₂C₁₀H₇, (naphthalen-2-ylmethyl)amino; 4, R = -NHCH₂C₁₆H₉, (pyren-2-ylmethyl)amino], were synthesized by covalently tethering π-conjugated molecules onto an Anderson cluster. The resulting POM-chromophore dyads were fully characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and ESI-MS. The fluorescence features of these dyads were studied in detail to verify a dramatic emission enhancement that can be achieved by fine-tuning the microenvironment in solution and suppressing the intrinsic photo-induced electron-transfer process.

"Chemistry-on-the-complex": functional RuII polypyridyl-type sensitizers as divergent building blocks

Ruthenium polypyridyl type complexes are potent photoactive compounds, and have found - among others - a broad range of important applications in the fields of biomedical diagnosis and phototherapy, energy conversion schemes such as dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and molecular assemblies for tailored photo-initiated processes. In this regard, the linkage of RuII polypyridyl-type complexes with specific functional moieties is highly desirable to enhance their inherent photophysical properties, e.g., with a targeting function to achieve cell selectivity, or with a dye or redox-active subunits for energy- and electron-transfer. However, the classical approach of performing ligand syntheses first and the formation of Ru complexes in the last steps imposes synthetic limitations with regard to tolerating functional groups or moieties as well as requiring lengthy convergent routes. Alternatively, the diversification of Ru complexes after coordination (termed "chemistry-on-the-complex") provides an elegant complementary approach. In addition to the Click chemistry concept, the rapidly developing synthesis and purification methodologies permit the preparation of Ru conjugates via amidation, alkylation and cross-coupling reactions. In this regard, recent developments in chromatography shifted the limits of purification, e.g., by using new commercialized surface-modified silica gels and automated instrumentation. This review provides detailed insights into applying the "chemistry-on-the-complex" concept, which is believed to stimulate the modular preparation of unpreceded molecular assemblies as well as functional materials based on Ru-based building blocks, including combinatorial approaches.

Molecular signature of polyoxometalates in electron transport of silicon-based molecular junctions

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are unconventional electro-active molecules with a great potential for applications in molecular memories, providing efficient processing steps onto electrodes are available. The synthesis of the organic-inorganic polyoxometalate hybrids [PM11O39{Sn(C6H4)C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C(C6H4)N2}]3- (M = Mo, W) endowed with a remote diazonium function is reported together with their covalent immobilization onto hydrogenated n-Si(100) substrates. Electron transport measurements through the resulting densely-packed monolayers contacted with a mercury drop as a top electrode confirms their homogeneity. Adjustment of the current-voltage curves with the Simmon's equation gives a mean tunnel energy barrier ΦPOM of 1.8 eV and 1.6 eV, for the Silicon-Molecules-Metal (SMM) junctions based on the polyoxotungstates (M = W) and polyoxomolybdates (M = Mo), respectively. This follows the trend observed in the electrochemical properties of POMs in solution, the polyoxomolybdates being easier to reduce than the polyoxotungstates, in agreement with lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) of lower energy. The molecular signature of the POMs is thus clearly identifiable in the solid-state electrical properties and the unmatched diversity of POM molecular and electronic structures should offer a great modularity.

Rapid photoinduced charge injection into covalent polyoxometalate-bodipy conjugates

Controlled design of photoactive hybrids would provide highly active materials for solar energy conversion and photo(electro) catalysis. We describe the kinetics of photoinduced electron transfer in a series of photoactive hybrids based on Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs) covalently grafted to bodipy photosensitizers. We show how the electronic properties and corresponding dynamics of these hybrids can be readily tuned by varying the POM metal ion, the anchoring functionalization and the spacer length. Ultrafast visible and IR transient absorption spectroscopy, supported by spectroelectrochemical measurements, reveals that photoinduced electron transfer from the bodipy chromophore to the organosilyl POM derivative occurs as rapidly as τ = 54 ps to generate a long-lived (τ = 4.8 ns) charge-separated (CS) state, making this system appropriate for applications in photoelectrochemical devices.

Self-Assembly of Polyoxometalate-Peptide Hybrids in Solution: Elucidating the Contributions of Multiple Possible Driving Forces

Incorporating the building blocks of nature (e.g., peptides and DNA) into inorganic polyoxometalate (POM) clusters is a promising approach to improve the compatibilities of POMs in biological fields. To extend their biological applications, it is necessary to understand the importance of different non‐covalent interactions during self‐organization. A series of Anderson POM–peptide hybrids have been used as a simple model to demonstrate the role of different interactions in POM–peptide (biomolecules) systems. Regardless of peptide chain length, these hybrids follow similar solution behaviors, forming hollow, spherical supramolecular structures in acetonitrile/water mixed solvents. The incorporation of peptide tails introduces interesting stimuli‐responsive properties to temperature, hybrid concentration, solvent polarity and ionic strength. Unlike the typical bilayer amphiphilic vesicles, they are found to follow the blackberry‐type assemblies of hydrophilic macroions, which are regulated by electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The formation of electrostatic assemblies before the supramolecular formation is confirmed by ion‐mobility mass spectrometry (IMS‐MS).

Coexistence of distinct intramolecular electron transfer pathways in polyoxometalate based molecular triads

Polyoxometalate (POM)-associated charge-separated states, formed by the photoinduced oxidation of a covalently attached photosensitizer and reduction of the POM, have attracted much attention due to the remarkable catalytic properties of the reduced POMs. However, short lifetimes of the POM-associated charge-separated state, which in some cases lead to the backward electron transfer being more rapid than the formation of the charge-separated state itself, are generally observed. Recently, we reported on the first example of a relative long-lived (τ = 470 ns) charge-separated state in a Ru(ii) bis(terpyridine)-POM molecular dyad. In this manuscript, further studies on extended molecular structures - two molecular triads - which contain an additional electron donor, phenothiazine (PTZ) or π-extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF), are discussed. We show that the excitation of the photosensitizer leads to the population of two distinct MLCT states, which differ in the distribution of excess electron density on the two distinct tpy ligands. These two MLCT states decay separately and, thus, constitute the starting points for distinct intramolecular electron-transfer pathways leading to the simultaneous population of two partially charge-separated states, i.e. PTZ˙+-Ru(tpy)2˙--POM and PTZ-RuIII(tpy)2-POM˙-. These independent decay pathways are unaffected by the choice of the electron donor. Thus, the initial charge distribution within the coordination environment of the photocenter determines the nature of the subsequent (partially) charge separated state that is formed in the triads. These results might open new avenues to design molecular interfaces, in which the directionality of electron transfer can be tuned by the choice of initial excitation.

Shining a light on the photo-sensitisation of organic-inorganic hybrid polyoxometalates

Finding new ways of using visible light (or, more specifically, solar irradiation) to drive commercially significant and/or challenging chemical processes is an ongoing research goal. Polyoxometalates (POMs) are discrete, metal-oxide clusters which are cheap, robust and easily synthesised but can also act as versatile molecular building blocks, allowing for astonishing variety in their structures and properties. In particular, the rich redox chemistry and inherent photo-activity of POMs makes them attractive for use in a variety of photochemical applications, however POMs characteristically only absorb strongly in the UV region. In this perspective, we discuss the various strategies which have been employed in order to sensitise POMs to visible light, with a particular focus on hybrid inorganic-organic POM species. We will discuss the two clear photo-activation mechanisms which have been developed to date and provide an outlook on some of the possible future directions of the field.

Direct detection of the photoinduced charge-separated state in a Ru(ii) bis(terpyridine)-polyoxometalate molecular dyad

Observation of photoinduced intramolecular charge-separation is difficult for photosensitizer-POM dyads because of rapid backward electron transfer. We report here for the first time on a long-lived charge-separated state (τ = 470 ns) observed in a Ru(ii) bis(terpyridine)-based dyad. Charge-separation occurs despite virtually no driving force and the short intrinsic excited-state lifetime of the photosensitizer.

Covalent hybrids based on Re(i) tricarbonyl complexes and polypyridine-functionalized polyoxometalate: synthesis, characterization and electronic properties

A series of [Re(CO)₃Br(N^N)] (N^N = substituted 2,2'-bipyridine ligand) complexes based on polypyridine-functionalized Dawson polyoxometalate (1-3) has been synthesized. The new hybrids (4-6) were characterized by various analytical techniques, including absorption, vibrational and luminescence spectroscopies as well as electrochemistry. Both units, the polyoxometalate and the transition metal complex, retain their intrinsic properties. Their combination in the newly prepared hybrids results in improved photosensitization in the high-energy visible region. However, a complete quenching of the emission for the [Re(CO)₃Br(N^N)] complexes is observed due to formation of a charge separated state, Re(ii) - POM^-, as shown by quenching experiments as well as theoretical modelling via DFT.

Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of the Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution by Polyoxometalate-Photosensitizer Dyads

The visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by covalent photosensitizer-catalyst dyads is one of the most elegant concepts in supramolecular homogeneous solar energy conversion. The intricacies of catalyst reactivity and photosensitizer-catalyst interactions require a detailed fundamental understanding of the system to rationalize the observed reactivities. Here, we report three dyads based on the covalent imine-bond linkage of an iridium photosensitizer and an organo-functionalized Anderson polyoxometalate anion [MMo₆ O₁₈ {(OCH₂ )₃ CNH₂ }₂ ]^3- (M=Mn³⁺ , Fe³⁺ , Co³⁺ ). Modification of the central metal ion M is used to modulate the HER activity. Detailed theoretical and experimental studies examine the role of the central metal ion M and provide critical understanding of the redox activity and light-driven HER activity of the novel dyads. Thus, the study enables a knowledge-based optimization of HER dyads by chemical modification of the reactive metal oxide components.

Tailor-made Covalent Organic-Inorganic Polyoxometalate Hybrids: Versatile Platforms for the Elaboration of Functional Molecular Architectures

Post-functionalization of organically modified polyoxometalates (POMs) is a powerful synthetic tool to devise functional building blocks for the rational elaboration of POM-based molecular materials. In this personal account we focus on iodoaryl-terminated POM platforms, describe reliable routes to the synthesis of covalent organic-inorganic POM-based hybrids and their integration into advanced molecular architectures or multi-scale assemblies as well as their immobilization onto surfaces. Valorisation of the remarkable redox properties of POMs in the fields of artificial synthesis and molecular electronic is especially considered.

Covalent Photosensitizer-Polyoxometalate-Catalyst Dyads for Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

A general concept for the covalent linkage of coordination compounds to bipyridine-functionalized polyoxometalates is presented. The new route is used to link an iridium photosensitizer to an Anderson-type hydrogen-evolution catalyst. This covalent dyad catalyzes the visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and shows superior HER activity compared with the non-covalent reference. Hydrogen evolution is observed over periods >1 week. Spectroscopic, photophysical, and electrochemical analyses give initial insight into the stability, electronic structure, and reactivity of the dyad. The results demonstrate that the proposed linkage concept allows synergistic covalent interactions between functional coordination compounds and reactive molecular metal oxides.

Evidence for Charge Transfer at the Interface between Hybrid Phosphomolybdate and Epitaxial Graphene

The interfacing of polyoxometalates and graphene can be considered to be an innovative way to generate hybrid structures that take advantage of the properties of both components. Polyoxometalates are redox-sensitive and photosensitive compounds with high temperature stability (up to 400 °C for some), showing tunable properties depending on the metal incorporated inside the complex. Graphene has a unique electronic band structure combined with good material properties for electrical and optical applications. The spontaneous, rather than electrochemical, functionalization of epitaxial graphene on SiC with Keggin phosphomolybdate derivative TBA3[PMo11O39{Sn(C6H4)C≡C(C6H4)N2}] (named K(Mo)Sn[N2(+)]) bearing a phenyl diazonium unit is investigated. Graphene decoration is evidenced by means of AFM, Raman, XPS, and cyclic voltammetry, indicating a successful immobilization of the polyoxomolybdate. The covalent bonding of the polyoxometalate to the graphene substrate can be deduced from the appearance of a D band in the Raman spectra and from the loss of mobility in the electrical conduction. High-resolution XPS spectra reveal an electron transfer from the graphene to the Mo complex. The comparison of charge-carrier density measurements before and after grafting supports the p-type doping effect, which is further evidenced by work function UPS measurements.

On chirality induction in the crystalline solid-containing sandwich-type [Ln(α-PW11O39)2]11− polyoxotungstate and proline

For the racemisation, the [Ln(α-PW₁₁O₃₉)₂]¹¹⁻ polyanion with light Ln experienced the ‘on-site rotation’ mechanism, while the [Ln(α-PW₁₁O₃₉)₂]¹¹⁻ polyanion with heavy Ln followed the “dissociation–association” mechanism.

A covalent polyoxomolybdate-based hybrid with remarkable electron reservoir properties

A new polyoxomolybdate-based hybrid platform TBA4[PMo11O39{Sn(p-C6H4I)}] is reported. The presence of a post-functionalisable iodo-aryl moiety allows the grafting of a ferrocenyl moiety onto the POM. The electrochemical characterisation shows the effect of molybdenum on the electron reservoir properties of POM-based hybrids, which are further enhanced upon the addition of an acid.

Dawson-type Polyoxometalate Covalently Linked to Naphthalene: Synthesis, Characterisation and Material Properties

A novel covalently linked organic–polyoxometalate (POM) hybrid compound [N(C4H9)4]6[α2-P2W17O61{P(O)C6H4C≡CC10H7}2] (NOD) was prepared by Sonogashira coupling reaction of 1-iodonaphthalene with (NBu4)6[α2-P2W17O61{P(O)C6H4C≡CH}2] (OD), and characterised by NMR, infrared spectroscopy, UV–vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The UV–vis and luminescence spectra of NOD showed delocalisation and electron transfer in the hybrid system. The redox potential of the polyanion could be tuned by grafting organic composites on it. NOD displayed interesting electrical conductivity behaviours, photovoltage response, and photocatalytic activity.

Synthesis and photoelectric properties of new Dawson-type polyoxometalate-based dimeric and oligomeric Pt(ii)-acetylide inorganic–organic hybrids

New polyoxometalate-based Pt(ii)-acetylide hybrids were prepared and their photoelectric properties as hybrid LB films were studied.
