Synthesis, Molecular and Electronic Structure of UV(O)[N(SiMe3)2]3

Synthesis, structure and redox properties of single-atom bridged diuranium complexes supported by aryloxides

Single-atom (group 15 and group 16 anions) bridged dimetallic complexes of low oxidation state uranium provide a convenient route to implement multielectron transfer and promote magnetic communication in uranium chemistry, but remain extremely rare. Here we report the synthesis, redox and magnetic properties of N3-, O2-, and S2- bridged diuranium complexes supported by bulky aryloxide ligands. The U(IV)/U(IV) nitride [Cs(THF)8][(U(OAr)3)2(μ-N)], 1 could be prepared and characterized but could not be reduced. Reduction of the neutral U(IV)/U(IV) complexes [(U(OAr)3)2(μ-X)] A (X = O) and B (X = S) led to the isolation and characterization of the U(IV)/U(III) and U(III)/U(III) analogues. Complexes [(K(THF)4)2(U(OAr)2)2(μ-S)2], 5 and [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]2[(U(OAr)3)2(μ-S)], 6 are the first examples of U(III) sulphide bridged complexes. Computational studies and redox properties allow the reactivity of the dimetallic complexes to be related to their electronic structure.

Arene-, Chlorido-, and Imido-Uranium Bis- and Tris(boryloxide) Complexes

We introduce the boryloxide ligand {(HCNDipp)2BO}- (NBODipp, Dipp = 2,6-di-isopropylphenyl) to actinide chemistry. Protonolysis of [U{N(SiMe3)2}3] with 3 equiv of NBODippH produced the uranium(III) tris(boryloxide) complex [U(NBODipp)3] (1). In contrast, treatment of UCl4 with 3 equiv of NBODippK in THF at room temperature or reflux conditions produced only [U(NBODipp)2(Cl)2(THF)2] (2) with 1 equiv of NBODippK remaining unreacted. However, refluxing the mixture of 2 and unreacted NBODippK in toluene instead of THF afforded the target complex [U(NBODipp)3(Cl)(THF)] (3). Two-electron oxidation of 1 with AdN3 (Ad = 1-adamantyl) afforded the uranium(V)-imido complex [U(NBODipp)3(NAd)] (4). The solid-state structure of 1 reveals a uranium-arene bonding motif, and structural, spectroscopic, and DFT calculations all suggest modest uranium-arene δ-back-bonding with approximately equal donation into the arene π4 and π5 δ-symmetry π* molecular orbitals. Complex 4 exhibits a short uranium(V)-imido distance, and computational modeling enabled its electronic structure to be compared to related uranium-imido and uranium-oxo complexes, revealing a substantial 5f-orbital crystal field splitting and extensive mixing of 5f |ml,ms⟩ states and mj projections. Complexes 1-4 have been variously characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, 1H NMR, IR, UV/vis/NIR, and EPR spectroscopies, SQUID magnetometry, elemental analysis, and CONDON, F-shell, DFT, NLMO, and QTAIM crystal field and quantum chemical calculations.

Accessing a Highly Reducing Uranium(III) Complex through Cyclometalation

U(IV) cyclometalated complexes have shown rich reactivity, but their low oxidation state analogues still remain rare. Herein, we report the isolation of [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][UIII{N(SiMe3)2}2(κ2-C,N-CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)], 1, from the reduction of [UIII{N(SiMe)2}3] with KC8 and 2.2.2-cryptand at room temperature. Cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrate that 1 has a reduction potential similar to that of the previously reported [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][UII{N(SiMe)2}3] (Epc = -2.6 V versus Fc+/0 and Epc = -2.8 V versus Fc+/0, respectively). Complex 1, indeed, shows similar reducing abilities upon reactions with 4,4'-bipyridine, 2,2'-bipyridine, and 1-azidoadamantane. Interestingly, 1 was also found to be the first example of a mononuclear U(III) complex that is capable of reducing pyridine. In addition, it is shown that a wide variety of substrates can be inserted into the U-C bond, forming new U(III) metallacycles. These results highlight that cyclometalated U(III) complexes can serve as versatile precursors for a broad range of reactivity and for assembling a variety of novel chemical architectures.

Formation of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine via coupling of the two charge reversed C-N bonds of Me3NO in the presence of an Eu(II) bis(trimethylsilyl)amide complex

An N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) complex of Eu(II) was synthesized via an unprecedented self-aminomethylation of Me3NO in the presence of Eu[N(SiMe3)2]2(THF)2. The neutral TMEDA ligand is formed via the coupling of two charge reversed carbon centres from the same precursor Me3NO. In contrast, the reactions of LnII[N(SiMe3)2]2(THF)2 (Ln = Yb, Sm) with Me3NO led to the oxygen-bridged dinuclear complexes of Ln(III).

A Comprehensive Study Concerning the Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Terminal Uranium Oxido, Sulfido, and Selenido Metallocenes

Terminal uranium oxido, sulfido, and selenido metallocenes were synthesized, and their reactivity was comprehensively studied. Heating of an equimolar mixture of [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂UMe₂ (2) and [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂U(NH-p-tolyl)₂ (3) in the presence of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (dmap) in refluxing toluene forms [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂U═N(p-tolyl)(dmap) (4), which is a useful precursor for the preparation of the terminal uranium oxido, sulfido, and selenido metallocenes [η⁵-1,2,4-(Me₃Si)₃C₅H₂]₂U═E(dmap) (E = O (5), S (6), Se (7)) employing a cycloaddition-elimination methodology with Ph₂C═E (E = O, S) or (p-MeOPh)₂CSe, respectively. Metallocenes 5-7 are inert toward alkynes, but they act as nucleophiles in the presence of alkylsilyl halides. The oxido and sulfido metallocenes 5 and 6 undergo [2 + 2] cycloadditions with isothiocyanate PhNCS or CS₂, while the selenido derivative 7 does not. The experimental studies are complemented by density functional theory (DFT) computations.

Evaluating f-Orbital Participation in the UV═E Multiple Bonds of [U(E)(NR2)3] (E = O, NSiMe3, NAd; R = SiMe3)

The reaction of 1 equiv of 1-azidoadamantane with [U^III(NR₂)₃] (R = SiMe₃) in Et₂O results in the formation of [U^V(NR₂)₃(NAd)] (1, Ad = 1-adamantyl) in good yields. The electronic structure of 1, as well as those of the related U(V) complexes, [U^V(NR₂)₃(NSiMe₃)] (2) and [U^V(NR₂)₃(O)] (3), were analyzed with EPR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, NIR-visible spectroscopy, and crystal field modeling. This analysis revealed that, within this series of complexes, the steric bulk of the E^2- (E═O, NR) ligand is the most important factor in determining the electronic structure. In particular, the increasing steric bulk of this ligand, on moving from O^2- to [NAd]^2-, results in increasing U═E distances and E-U-N_amide angles. These changes have two principal effects on the resulting electronic structure: (1) the increasing U═E distances decreases the energy of the f_σ orbital, which is primarily σ* with respect to the U═E bond, and (2) the increasing E-U-N_amide angles increases the energy of f_δ, due to increasing antibonding interactions with the amide ligands. As a result of the latter change, the electronic ground state for complexes 1 and 2 is primarily f_φ in character, whereas the ground state for complex 3 is primarily f_δ.

Unprecedented pairs of uranium (iv/v) hydroxido and (iv/v/vi) oxido complexes supported by a seven-coordinate cyclen-anchored tris-aryloxide ligand

We present the synthesis and reactivity of a newly developed, cyclen-based tris-aryloxide ligand precursor, namely cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArOH)3, and its coordination chemistry to uranium. The corresponding uranium(iii) complex [UIII((OAr t-Bu,t-Bu)3(Me)cyclen)] (1) was characterized by 1H NMR analysis, CHN elemental analysis and UV/vis/NIR electronic absorption spectroscopy. Since no single-crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction analysis could be obtained from this precursor, 1 was oxidized with methylene chloride or silver fluoride to yield [(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UIV(X)] (X = Cl (2), F (3)), which were unambiguously characterized and successfully crystallized to gain insight into the molecular structure by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (SC-XRD). Further, the activation of H2O and N2O by 1 is presented, resulting in the U(iv) complex [(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UIV(OH)] (4) and the U(v) complex [(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UV(O)] (6). Complexes 2, 3, 4, and 6 were characterized by 1H NMR analysis, CHN elemental analysis, UV/vis/NIR electronic absorption spectroscopy, IR vibrational spectroscopy, and SQUID magnetization measurements as well as cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, chemical oxidation of 3, 4, and 6 with AgF or AgSbF6 was achieved leading to complexes [(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UV(F)2] (5), [(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UV(OH)][SbF6] (7), and [(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UVI(O)][SbF6] (8). Finally, reduction of 7 with KC8 yielded a U(iv) complex, spectroscopically and magnetochemically identified as K[(cyclen(Me)( t-Bu,t-BuArO)3)UIV(O)].

Theoretical Investigation of Catalytic Water Splitting by the Arene-Anchored Actinide Complexes

Actinide complexes, which could enable the electrocatalytic H₂O reduction, are not well documented because of the fact that actinide-containing catalysts are precluded by extremely stable actinyl species. Herein, by using relativistic density functional theory calculations, the arene-anchored trivalent actinide complexes (^Me,MeArO)₃ArAn (marked as [AnL]) with desirable electron transport between metal and ligand arene are investigated for H₂ production. The metal center is changed from Ac to Pu. Electron-spin density calculations reveal a two-electron oxidative process (involving high-valent intermediates) for complexes [AnL] (An = P-Pu) along the catalytic pathway. The electrons are provided by both the actinide metal and the arene ring of ligand. This is comparable to the previously reported uranium catalyst (^Ad,MeArO)₃mesU (Ad = adamantine and mes = mesitylene). From the thermodynamic and kinetic perspectives, [PaL] offers appreciably lower reaction energies for the overall catalytic cycle than other actinide complexes. Thus, the protactinium complex tends to be the most reactive for H₂O reduction to produce H₂ and has the advantage of its experimental accessibility.

Mesoionic Carbene Complexes of Uranium(IV) and Thorium(IV)

We report the synthesis and characterization of uranium(IV) and thorium(IV) mesoionic carbene complexes [An{N(SiMe3)2}2(CH2SiMe2NSiMe3){MIC}] (An = U, 4U and Th, 4Th; MIC = {CN(Me)C(Me)N(Me)CH}), which represent rare examples of actinide mesoionic carbene linkages and the first example of a thorium mesoionic carbene complex. Complexes 4U and 4Th were prepared via a C-H activation intramolecular cyclometallation reaction of actinide halides, with concomitant formal 1,4-proton migration of an N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO). Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the An-carbene bond comprises only a σ-component, in contrast to the uranium(III) analogue [U{N(SiMe3)2}3(MIC)] (1) where computational studies suggested that the 5f3 uranium(III) ion engages in a weak one-electron π-backbond to the MIC. This highlights the varying nature of actinide-MIC bonding as a function of actinide oxidation state. In solution, 4Th exists in equilibrium with the Th(IV) metallacycle [Th{N(SiMe3)2}2(CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)] (6Th) and free NHO (3). The thermodynamic parameters of this equilibrium were probed using variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy yielding an entropically favored but enthalpically endothermic process with an overall reaction free energy of ΔG 298.15K = 0.89 kcal mol-1. Energy decomposition analysis (EDA-NOCV) of the actinide-carbon bonds in 4U and 4Th reveals that the former is enthalpically stronger and more covalent than the latter, which accounts for the respective stabilities of these two complexes.

A terminal neptunium(V)-mono(oxo) complex

Neptunium was the first actinide element to be artificially synthesized, yet, compared with its more famous neighbours uranium and plutonium, is less conspicuously studied. Most neptunium chemistry involves the neptunyl di(oxo)-motif, and transuranic compounds with one metal-ligand multiple bond are rare, being found only in extended-structure oxide, fluoride or oxyhalide materials. These combinations stabilize the required high oxidation states, which are otherwise challenging to realize for transuranic ions. Here we report the synthesis, isolation and characterization of a stable molecular neptunium(V)-mono(oxo) triamidoamine complex. We describe a strong Np≡O triple bond with dominant 5f-orbital contributions and σ_u > π_u energy ordering, akin to terminal uranium-nitrides and di(oxo)-actinyls, but not the uranium-mono(oxo) triple bonds or other actinide multiple bonds reported so far. This work demonstrates that molecular high-oxidation-state transuranic complexes with a single metal-ligand bond can be stabilized and studied in isolation.

Assembling Diuranium Complexes in Different States of Charge with a Bridging Redox-Active Ligand

Radical-bridged diuranium complexes are desirable for their potential high exchange coupling and single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, but remain rare. Here we report for the first time radical-bridged diuranium(iv) and diuranium(iii) complexes. Reaction of [U{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃] with 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpym) resulted in the formation of the bpym-bridged diuranium(iv) complex [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^IV}₂(μ-bpym²⁻)], 1. Reduction with 1 equiv. KC₈ reduces the complex, affording [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U}₂(μ-bpym)], 2, which is best described as a radical-bridged U^III–bpym˙⁻–U^III complex. Further reduction of 1 with 2 equiv. KC₈, affords [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]₂[{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^III}₂(μ-bpym²⁻)], 3. Addition of AgBPh₄ to complex 1 resulted in the oxidation of the ligand, yielding the radical-bridged complex [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^IV}₂(μ-bpym˙⁻)][BPh₄], 4. X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, susceptibility data, EPR and DFT/CASSCF calculations are in line with their assignments. In complexes 2 and 4 the presence of the radical-bridge leads to slow magnetic relaxation.

Convenient routes to dinuclear complexes of uranium where two uranium centers are bridged by the redox-active ligand bpym were identified resulting in unique and stable radical-bridged dimetallic complexes of U(iii) and U(iv) showing SMM behaviour.

Cation assisted binding and cleavage of dinitrogen by uranium complexes

N2 binding affinity decreases markedly in a series of isostructural U(iii)–alkali ions complexes with increasing cation size. N2 binding is undetectable in the Cs analogue, but the first example of cesium-assisted N2 cleavage to bis-nitride was observed at ambient condition.

[AnI3(THF)4] (An = Np, Pu) Preparation Bypassing An0 Metal Precursors: Access to Np3+/Pu3+ Nonaqueous and Organometallic Complexes

Direct comparison of homologous molecules provides a foundation from which to elucidate both subtle and patent changes in reactivity patterns, redox processes, and bonding properties across a series of elements. While trivalent molecular U chemistry is richly developed, analogous Np or Pu research has long been hindered by synthetic routes often requiring scarcely available metallic-phase source material, high-temperature solid-state reactions producing poorly soluble binary halides, or the use of pyrophoric reagents. The development of routes to nonaqueous Np³⁺/Pu³⁺ from widely available precursors can potentially transform the scope and pace of research into actinide periodicity. Here, aqueous stocks of An⁴⁺ (An = Np, Pu) are dehydrated to well-defined [AnCl₄(DME)₂] (DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), and then a single-step halide exchange/reduction employing Me₃SiI produces [AnI₃(THF)₄] (THF = tetrahydrofuran) in a high to nearly quantitative crystalline yield (with I₂ and Me₃SiCl as easily removed byproducts). We demonstrate the synthetic utility of these An-iodide molecules, prepared by metal⁰-free routes, through characterization of archetypal complexes including the tris-silylamide, [Np{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃], and bent metallocenes, [An(C₅Me₅)₂(I)(THF)] (An = Np, Pu)─chosen because both motifs are ubiquitous in Th, U, and lanthanide research. The synthesis of [Np{N(Se═PPh₂)₂}₃] is also reported, completing an isomorphous series that now extends from U to Am and is the first characterized Np³⁺-Se bond.

Synthesis of a heterobimetallic actinide nitride and an analysis of its bonding

Reaction of [K(DME)][Th{N(R)(SiMe₂ CH₂)}₂(NR₂)] (R = SiMe₃) with 1 equiv. of [U(NR₂)₃(NH₂)] (1) in THF, in the presence of 18-crown-6, results in formation of a bridged uranium-thorium nitride complex, [K(18-crown-6)(THF)₂][(NR₂)₃U^IV(μ-N)Th^IV(NR₂)₃] (2), which can be isolated in 48% yield after work-up. Complex 2 is the first isolable molecular mixed-actinide nitride complex. Also formed in the reaction is the methylene-bridged mixed-actinide nitride, [K(18-crown-6)][K(18-crown-6)(Et₂O)₂][(NR₂)₂U(μ-N)(μ-κ²-C,N-CH₂SiMe₂NR)Th(NR₂)₂]₂ (3), which can be isolated in 34% yield after work-up. Complex 3 is likely generated by deprotonation of a methyl group in 2 by [NR₂]^-, yielding the new μ-CH₂ moiety and HNR₂. Reaction of 2 with 0.5 equiv. of I₂ results in formation of a U^V/Th^IV bridged nitride, [(NR₂)₃U^V(μ-N)Th^IV(NR₂)₃] (4), which can be isolated in 42% yield after work-up. The electronic structure of 4 was analyzed with EPR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and NIR-visible spectroscopy. This analysis demonstrated that the energies of 5f orbitals of 4 are largely determined by the strong ligand field exerted by the nitride ligand.

Fragmentation, catenation, and direct functionalisation of white phosphorus by a uranium(IV)-silyl-phosphino-carbene complex

Room temperature reaction of the uranium(iv)-carbene [U{C(SiMe3)(PPh2)}(BIPMTMS)(μ-Cl)Li(TMEDA)(μ-TMEDA)0.5]2 (1, BIPMTMS = C(PPh2NSiMe3)2) with white phosphorus (P4) produces the organo-P5 compound [P5{C(SiMe3)(PPh2)}2][Li(TMEDA)2] (2) and the uranium(iv)-methanediide [U{BIPMTMS}{Cl}{μ-Cl}2{Li(TMEDA)}] (3). This is an unprecedented example of cooperative metal-carbene P4 activation/insertion into a metal-carbon double bond and also an actinide complex reacting with P4 to directly form an organophosphorus species. Conducting the reaction at low temperature permits the isolation of the diuranium(iv) complex [{U(BIPMTMS)([μ-η2:η2-P2]C[SiMe3][PPh2])}2] (4), which then converts to 2 and 3. Thus, surprisingly, in contrast to all other actinide P4 reactivity, although this reaction produces catenation overall it proceeds via P4 cleavage to functionalised P2 units. Hence, this work establishes a proof of concept synthetic cycle for direct fragmentation, catenation, and functionalisation of P4.

Delivery of a Masked Uranium(II) by an Oxide-Bridged Diuranium(III) Complex

Oxide is an attractive linker for building polymetallic complexes that provide molecular models for metal oxide activity, but studies of these systems are limited to metals in high oxidation states. Herein, we synthesized and characterized the molecular and electronic structure of diuranium bridged U^III /U^IV and U^III /U^III complexes. Reactivity studies of these complexes revealed that the U-O bond is easily broken upon addition of N-heterocycles resulting in the delivery of a formal equivalent of U^III and U^II , respectively, along with the uranium(IV) terminal-oxo coproduct. In particular, the U^III /U^III oxide complex effects the reductive coupling of pyridine and two-electron reduction of 4,4'-bipyridine affording unique examples of diuranium(III) complexes bridged by N-heterocyclic redox-active ligands. These results provide insight into the chemistry of low oxidation state metal oxides and demonstrate the use of oxo-bridged U^III /U^III complexes as a strategy to explore U^II reactivity.

Expanding the Nonaqueous Chemistry of Neptunium: Synthesis and Structural Characterization of [Np(NR2)3Cl], [Np(NR2)3Cl]-, and [Np{N(R)(SiMe2CH2)}2(NR2)]- (R = SiMe3)

Reaction of 3 equiv of NaNR₂ (R = SiMe₃) with NpCl₄(DME)₂ in THF afforded the Np(IV) silylamide complex, [Np(NR₂)₃Cl] (1), in good yield. Reaction of 1 with 1.5 equiv of KC₈ in THF, in the presence of 1 equiv of dibenzo-18-crown-6, resulted in formation of [{K(DB-18-C-6)(THF)}₃(μ₃-Cl)][Np(NR₂)₃Cl]₂ (4), also in good yield. Complex 4 represents the first structurally characterized Np(III) amide. Finally, reaction of NpCl₄(DME)₂ with 5 equiv of NaNR₂ and 1 equiv of dibenzo-18-crown-6 afforded the Np(IV) bis(metallacycle), [{Na(DB-18-C-6)(Et₂O)_0.62(κ¹-DME)_0.38}₂(μ-DME)][Np{N(R)(SiMe₂CH₂)}₂(NR₂)]₂ (8), in moderate yield. Complex 8 was characterized by ¹H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography and represents a rare example of a structurally characterized neptunium-hydrocarbyl complex. To support these studies, we also synthesized the uranium analogues of 4 and 8, namely, [K(2,2,2-cryptand)][U(NR₂)₃Cl] (2), [K(DB-18-C-6)(THF)₂][U(NR₂)₃Cl] (3), [Na(DME)₃][U{N(R)(SiMe₂CH₂)}₂(NR₂)] (6), and [{Na(DB-18-C-6)(Et₂O)_0.5(κ¹-DME)_0.5}₂(μ-DME)][U{N(R)(SiMe₂CH₂)}₂(NR₂)]₂ (7). Complexes 2, 3, 6, and 7 were characterized by a number of techniques, including NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.

Stabilization of uranyl(v) by dipicolinic acid in aqueous medium

Preparation of a stable U(v) complex in an aqueous medium is a challenging task owing to its disproportionation nature (conversion into more stable U(vi) and U(iv) species) and sensitivity to atmospheric oxygen. The stable uranyl (UO₂²⁺)/dipicolinic acid (DPA) complex ([U^(VI)O₂(DPA)(OH)(H₂O)]^-) was formed at pH 10.5-12.0, which was confirmed by potentiometric and spectrophotometric titrations, and NMR, ESI-MS and EXAFS spectroscopy. The complex [U^(VI)O₂(DPA)(OH)(H₂O)]^- can be electrochemically reduced on the Pt electrode at -0.9 eV (vs. Ag/AgCl) to [U^(V)O₂(DPA)(OH)(H₂O)]^2- in aqueous medium under an anaerobic environment. According to cyclic voltammetric analysis, a pair of oxidation and reduction waves at E'₀ = -0.592 V corresponds to the [U^(VI)O₂(DPA)(OH)(H₂O)]^-/[U^(V)O₂(DPA)(OH)(H₂O)]^2- redox couple and the formation of [U^(V)O₂(DPA)(OH)(H₂O)]^2- was confirmed by the electron stoichiometry (n = 0.97 ± 0.05) of the reduction reaction of [U^(VI)O₂(DPA)(OH)(H₂O)]^-. The pentavalent uranyl complex [U^(V)O₂(DPA)(OH)(H₂O)]^2- was further characterized via UV-vis-NIR absorption spectrophotometry and X-ray absorption (XANES and EXAFS) spectroscopy. The [U^(V)O₂(DPA)(OH)(H₂O)]^2- complex is stable at pH 10.5-12.0 in anaerobic water for a few days. DFT calculation shows the strong complexing ability of DPA stabilizing the unstable oxidation state U(v) in aqueous medium.

The synthesis and versatile reducing power of low-valent uranium complexes

This synthesis and diverse reactivity of uranium(iii) and uranium(ii) complexes is discussed.

Small molecule activation by multimetallic uranium complexes supported by siloxide ligands

The synthesis and reactivity of uranium compounds supported by the tris-tert-butoxysiloxide ligand is surveyed. The multiple binding modes of the tert-butoxysiloxide ligand have proven very well suited to stabilize highly reactive homo- and heteropolymetallic complexes of uranium that have shown an unusual high reactivity towards small molecules such as CO2, CS2, chalcogens and azides. Moreover, these ligands have allowed the isolation of dinuclear nitride and oxide bridged complexes of uranium in various oxidation states. The ability of the tris-tert-butoxysiloxide ligands to trap alkali ions in these nitride or oxide complexes leads to unprecedented ligand based and metal based reduction and functionalization of N2, CO, CO2 and H2.

A complete series of uranium(iv) complexes with terminal hydrochalcogenido (EH) and chalcogenido (E) ligands E = O, S, Se, Te

We here report the synthesis and characterization of a complete series of terminal hydrochalcogenido, U-EH, and chalcogenido uranium(iv) complexes, U≡E (with E = O, S, Se, Te), supported by the (^Ad,MeArOH)₃tacn (1,4,7-tris(3-(1-adamantyl)-5-methyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) ligand system. Reaction of H₂E with the trivalent precursor [((^Ad,MeArO)₃tacn)U] (1) yields the corresponding uranium(iv) hydrochalcogenido complexes [((^Ad,MeArO)₃tacn)U(EH)] (2). Subsequent deprotonation of the terminal hydrochalcogenido species with KN(SiMe₃)₂, in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand, gives access to the uranium(iv) complexes with terminal chalcogenido ligands [K(2.2.2-crypt)][((^Ad,MeArO)₃tacn)U≡E] (3). In order to study the influence of the varying terminal chalogenido ligands on the overall molecular and electronic structure, all complexes were studied by single-crystal X-ray diffractometry, UV/vis/NIR, electronic absorption, and IR vibrational spectroscopy as well as SQUID magnetometry and computational analyses (DFT, MO, NBO).

Facile N-functionalization and strong magnetic communication in a diuranium(v) bis-nitride complex

Uranium nitride complexes are of high interest because of their ability to effect dinitrogen reduction and functionalization and to promote magnetic communication, but studies of their properties and reactivity remain rare. Here we have prepared in 73% yield the diuranium(v) bis-nitride complex [K2{[U(OSi(O t Bu)3)3]2(μ-N)2}], 4, from the thermal decomposition of the nitride-, azide-bridged diuranium(iv) complex [K2{[U(OSi(O t Bu)3)3]2(μ-N)(μ-N3)}], 3. The bis-nitride 4 reacts in ambient conditions with 1 equiv. of CS2 and 1 equiv. of CO2 resulting in N-C bond formation to afford the diuranium(v) complexes [K2{[U(OSi(O t Bu)3)3]2(μ-N)(μ-S)(μ-NCS)}], 5 and [K2{[U(OSi(O t Bu)3)3]2(μ-N)(μ-O)(μ-NCO)}], 6, respectively. Both nitrides in 4 react with CO resulting in oxidative addition of CO to one nitride and CO cleavage by the second nitride to afford the diuranium(iv) complex [K2{[U(OSi(O t Bu)3)3]2(μ-CN)(μ-O)(μ-NCO)}], 7. Complex 4 also effects the remarkable oxidative cleavage of H2 in mild conditions to afford the bis-imido bridged diuranium(iv) complex [K2{[U(OSi(O t Bu)3)3]2(μ-NH)2}], 8 that can be further protonated to afford ammonia in 73% yield. Complex 8 provides a good model for hydrogen cleavage by metal nitrides in the Haber-Bosch process. The measured magnetic data show an unusually strong antiferromagnetic coupling between uranium(v) ions in the complexes 4 and 6 with Neel temperatures of 77 K and 60 K respectively, demonstrating that nitrides are attractives linkers for promoting magnetic communication in uranium complexes.

Two-electron oxidation of a homoleptic U(iii) guanidinate complex by diphenyldiazomethane

Reaction of the first homoleptic U(iii) guanidinate complex with diphenyldiazomethane results in two-electron oxidation of U(iii) to U(v) and isolation of a U(v) hydrazido complex. Corresponding U(v) imido, U(v) oxo, and U(iv) azido complexes were also synthesized for structural comparison.

Uranium(iii) complexes supported by hydrobis(mercaptoimidazolyl)borates: synthesis and oxidation chemistry

The reaction of [UI3(thf)4] with the sodium or lithium salts of hydrobis(2-mercapto-1-methylimidazolyl)borate ligands ([H(R)B(timMe)2]-) in a 1 : 2 ratio, in tetrahydrofuran, gave the U(iii) complexes [UI{κ3-H,S,S'-H(R)B(timMe)2}2(thf)2] (R = H (1), Ph (2)) in good yields. Crystals of [UI{κ3-H,S,S'-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(thf)2] (2) were obtained by recrystallization from a tetrahydrofuran/acetonitrile solution, and the ion-separated uranium complex [U{κ3-H,S,S'-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(CH3CN)3][I] (3-I) was obtained by dissolution of 2 in acetonitrile followed by recrystallization. One-electron oxidation of 2 with AgBPh4 or I2 resulted in the formation of the cationic U(iv) complexes [U{κ3-H,S,S'-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}3][X] (X = BPh4 (6-BPh4), I (6-I)), due to a ligand redistribution process. These complexes are the first examples of homoleptic poly(azolyl)borate U(iv) complexes. Treatment of complex 2 with azobenzene led to the isolation of crystals of the U(iv) compound [UI{κ3-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(κ2-timMe)] (7). Treatment of 2 with pyridine-N oxide (pyNO) led to the formation of the uranyl complex [UO2{κ2-S,S'-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2] (8) and of complex 6-I, while from the reaction of [U{κ3-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(thf)3][BPh4] (5) with pyNO, the oxo-bridged U(iv) complex [{U{κ3-H(Ph)B(timMe)2}2(pyNO)}2(μ-O)][BPh4]2 (9) was also obtained. In the U(iii) and U(iv) complexes, the bis(azolyl)borate ligands bind to the uranium center in a κ3-H,S,S' coordination mode, while in the U(vi) complex the ligands bind to the metal in a κ2-S,S' mode. The presence of UH-B interactions in the solid-state, for the nine-coordinate complexes 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 and for the eight-coordinate complex 9, was supported by IR spectroscopy and/or X-ray diffraction analysis.

A diuranium carbide cluster stabilized inside a C80 fullerene cage

Unsupported non-bridged uranium-carbon double bonds have long been sought after in actinide chemistry as fundamental synthetic targets in the study of actinide-ligand multiple bonding. Here we report that, utilizing Ih(7)-C80 fullerenes as nanocontainers, a diuranium carbide cluster, U=C=U, has been encapsulated and stabilized in the form of UCU@Ih(7)-C80. This endohedral fullerene was prepared utilizing the Krätschmer-Huffman arc discharge method, and was then co-crystallized with nickel(II) octaethylporphyrin (NiII-OEP) to produce UCU@Ih(7)-C80·[NiII-OEP] as single crystals. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a cage-stabilized, carbide-bridged, bent UCU cluster with unexpectedly short uranium-carbon distances (2.03 Å) indicative of covalent U=C double-bond character. The quantum-chemical results suggest that both U atoms in the UCU unit have formal oxidation state of +5. The structural features of UCU@Ih(7)-C80 and the covalent nature of the U(f1)=C double bonds were further affirmed through various spectroscopic and theoretical analyses.

Rare-Earth- and Uranium-Mesoionic Carbenes: A New Class of f-Block Carbene Complex Derived from an N-Heterocyclic Olefin

Neutral mesoionic carbenes (MICs) have emerged as an important class of carbene, however they are found in the free form or ligated to only a few d-block ions. Unprecedented f-block MIC complexes [M(N'')3 {CN(Me)C(Me)N(Me)CH}] (M=U, Y, La, Nd; N''=N(SiMe3 )2 ) are reported. These complexes were prepared by a formal 1,4-proton migration reaction when the metal triamides [M(N'')3 ] were treated with the N-heterocyclic olefin H2 C=C(NMeCH)2 , which constitutes a new, general way to prepare MIC complexes. Quantum chemical calculations on the 5f3 uranium(III) complex suggest the presence of a U=C donor-acceptor bond, composed of a MIC→U σ-component and a U(5f)→MIC(2p) π-back-bond, but for the d0 f0 Y and La and 4f3 Nd congeners only MIC→M σ-bonding is found. Considering the generally negligible π-acidity of MICs, this is surprising and highlights that greater consideration should possibly be given to recognizing MICs as potential π-acid ligands when coordinated to strongly reducing metals.

Metathesis of a UV imido complex: a route to a terminal UV sulfide

The metathesis reaction of a U^V imido complex supported by sterically demanding tris(tert-butoxy)siloxide ligands with CS₂ afforded a terminal U^V thiocarbonate but metathesis with H₂S afforded the first example of a terminal U^V sulfide.

Herein, we report the synthesis and characterisation of the first terminal uranium(v) sulfide and a related U^V trithiocarbonate complex supported by sterically demanding tris(tert-butoxy)siloxide ligands. The reaction of the potassium-bound U^V imido complex, [U(NAd){OSi(OtBu)₃}₄K] (4), with CS₂ led to the isolation of perthiodicarbonate [K(18c6)]₂[C₂S₆] (6), with concomitant formation of the U^IV complex, [U{OSi(OtBu)₃}₄], and S Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> CNAd. In contrast, the reaction of the U^V imido complex, [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U(NAd){OSi(OtBu)₃}₄] (5), with one or two equivalents of CS₂ afforded the trithiocarbonate complex, [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][U(CS₃){OSi(OtBu)₃}₄] (7), which was isolated in 57% yield, with concomitant elimination of the admantyl thiocyanate product, SCNAd. Complex 7 is likely formed by fast nucleophilic addition of a U^V terminal sulfide intermediate, resulting from the slow metathesis reaction of the imido complex with CS₂, to a second CS₂ molecule. The addition of a solution of H₂S in thf (1.3 eq.) to 4 afforded the first isolable U^V terminal sulfide complex, [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][US{OSi(OtBu)₃}₄] (8), in 41% yield. Based on DFT calculations, triple-bond character with a strong covalent interaction is suggested for the U–S bond in complex 7.

Assessing crystal field and magnetic interactions in diuranium-μ-chalcogenide triamidoamine complexes with UIV-E-UIV cores (E = S, Se, Te): implications for determining the presence or absence of actinide-actinide magnetic exchange

We report the synthesis and characterisation of a family of diuranium(iv)-μ-chalcogenide complexes including a detailed examination of their electronic structures and magnetic behaviours. Treatment of [U(Tren^TIPS)] [1, Tren^TIPS = N(CH₂CH₂NSiPrⁱ₃)₃] with Ph₃PS, selenium or tellurium affords the diuranium(iv)-sulfide, selenide, and telluride complexes [{U(Tren^TIPS)}₂(μ-E)] (E = S, 2; Se, 5; Te, 6). Complex 2 is also formed by treatment of [U(Tren^TIPS){OP(NMe₂)₃}] (3) with Ph₃PS, whereas treatment of 3 with elemental sulfur gives the diuranium(iv)-persulfido complex [{U(Tren^TIPS)}₂(μ-η²:η²-S₂)] (4). Complexes 2-6 have been variously characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, IR, and optical spectroscopies, room temperature Evans and variable temperature SQUID magnetometry, elemental analyses, and complete active space self consistent field spin orbit calculations. The combined characterisation data present a self-consistent picture of the electronic structure and magnetism of 2, 5, and 6, leading to the conclusion that single-ion crystal field effects, and not diuranium magnetic coupling, are responsible for features in their variable-temperature magnetisation data. The presence of magnetic coupling is often implied and sometimes quantified by such data, and so this study highlights the importance of evaluating other factors, such as crystal field effects, that can produce similar magnetic observables, and to thus avoid misassignments of such phenomena.

New vistas in the molecular chemistry of thorium: low oxidation state complexes

Although the molecular chemistry of thorium is dominated by the +4 oxidation state accounts of Th(iii) complexes have continued to increase in frequency since the first structurally characterised example was reported thirty years ago. The isolation of the first Th(ii) complexes in 2015 and exciting recent Th(iii) and Th(ii) reactivity studies both indicate that this long-neglected area is set to undergo a rapid expansion in research activity over the next decade, as previously seen since the turn of the millennium for analogous U(iii) small molecule activation chemistry. In this perspective article, we review synthetic routes to Th(iii) and Th(ii) complexes and summarise their distinctive physical properties. We provide a near-chronological discussion of these systems, focusing on structurally characterised examples, and cover complementary theoretical studies that rationalise electronic structures. All reactivity studies of Th(iii) and Th(ii) complexes that have been reported to date are described in detail.

Terminal Uranium(V/VI) Nitride Activation of Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Disulfide: Factors Governing Diverse and Well-Defined Cleavage and Redox Reactions

The reactivity of terminal uranium(V/VI) nitrides with CE₂ (E=O, S) is presented. Well-defined C=E cleavage followed by zero-, one-, and two-electron redox events is observed. The uranium(V) nitride [U(Tren^TIPS )(N)][K(B15C5)₂ ] (1, Tren^TIPS =N(CH₂ CH₂ NSiiPr₃ )₃ ; B15C5=benzo-15-crown-5) reacts with CO₂ to give [U(Tren^TIPS )(O)(NCO)][K(B15C5)₂ ] (3), whereas the uranium(VI) nitride [U(Tren^TIPS )(N)] (2) reacts with CO₂ to give isolable [U(Tren^TIPS )(O)(NCO)] (4); complex 4 rapidly decomposes to known [U(Tren^TIPS )(O)] (5) with concomitant formation of N₂ and CO proposed, with the latter trapped as a vanadocene adduct. In contrast, 1 reacts with CS₂ to give [U(Tren^TIPS )(κ² -CS₃ )][K(B15C5)₂ ] (6), 2, and [K(B15C5)₂ ][NCS] (7), whereas 2 reacts with CS₂ to give [U(Tren^TIPS )(NCS)] (8) and "S", with the latter trapped as Ph₃ PS. Calculated reaction profiles reveal outer-sphere reactivity for uranium(V) but inner-sphere mechanisms for uranium(VI); despite the wide divergence of products the initial activation of CE₂ follows mechanistically related pathways, providing insight into the factors of uranium oxidation state, chalcogen, and NCE groups that govern the subsequent divergent redox reactions that include common one-electron reactions and a less-common two-electron redox event. Caution, we suggest, is warranted when utilising CS₂ as a reactivity surrogate for CO₂ .

Reductive disproportionation of nitric oxide mediated by low-valent uranium

The reductive disproportionation of nitric oxide (1 atm) is mediated by the bulky U(III) aryloxide [U(III)(OAr(Ad,Ad,Me))3] ((Ad,Ad,Me)ArO = O-C6H2-2,6-Ad-4-Me) (1) to form the U(V) terminal oxo species [((Ad,Ad,Me)ArO)3U(V)(O)] (2) and N2O, as confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction and GC-MS measurements. The reaction is quantitative in the solid state. Mechanistic and theoretical studies of the reaction suggest that the N-N bond is formed by the coupling of an η(1)-O bound nitric oxide ligand with gaseous NO to give an η(1)-(N2O2)(1-) intermediate prior to the spontaneous extrusion of N2O to yield the U(V) terminal oxo species 2.
