Series of Metal Organic Frameworks Assembled from Ln(III), Na(I), and Chiral Flexible-Achiral Rigid Dicarboxylates Exhibiting Tunable UV–vis–IR Light Emission

Dye functionalized lanthanide metal-organic framework as a multifunctional luminescent hybrid material for visual sensing of biomarker 2-methoxyaceticacid and sulfide anion

Based on the anionic Slug-47 [Gd(bpdc)₂^-] [NH₂(CH₃)₂⁺], a multifunctional fluorescent material with ultra-high stability has been fabricated successfully. Firstly, Eu_0.04Tb_39.96Gd₆₀ with white light emission is prepared by adjusting the doping ratio of Eu³⁺ ions and Tb³⁺ ions. Then, the dye acriflavine (ACF) is further introduced into the framework of Eu@ Slug-47 (1) via cation exchange to obtain ACF@1, which can be used as a ratio fluorescence sensor to detect 2-methoxyaceticacid (Maa), a toxic metabolite of glycol monomethyl ether, with the limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.27 μg/mL. It is impressive that the emissions of ACF and biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylicacid ligands are gradually enhanced with the gradual weakening of the emission of Eu³⁺ ions during the detection of Maa. Under the superposition of three different colors, the sensing process undergoes a distinct color change from red to white and then to blue. These rich and colorful colors provide conditions for accurate visual detection of Maa. In addition, the material can also respond well to the pollutant S^2- ions and the LOD can reach 11.3 μmol /L. It is worth mentioning that the available quenching effect can be observed even if Maa and S^2- ions are detected in urine and tap water respectively, indicating that the multifunctional material has a brilliant application prospect. Finally, the quenching mechanism of Maa, S^2- ions toward ACF@1 is discussed in detail.

Achieving colour tuneable and white-light luminescence in a large family of dual-emission lanthanide coordination polymers

Expanding the family of lanthanide terpyridine coordination polymers has yielded eighteen new complexes with two different phases, Ln(TPC)₂(HCOO)(H₂O) (Ln-1) and Ln(TPC)(HCOO)₂ (Ln-2) (Ln = Sm-Lu, except Tm). Both structures are composed of lanthanide cations interconnected by 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-4'-carboxylate ligands to yield one-dimensional chain topologies. However, the incorporation of an additional crystallographically unique decorative TPC ligand into Ln-1 gives rises to a distinct phase. The encapsulation of both metal- and ligand-based phosphors within single coordination polymers leads to dual-emission of the afforded materials. Furthermore, judicious lanthanide doping in heterometallic Ln-1 and Ln-2 allows for fine-tuning the photoluminescent colours over a wide range of gamut. Such a combination showcases the capability to fine-tune the emission colours from deep green, to red, and to blue. In addition, direct white-light emission upon UV excitation can be achieved in the Sm_xGd_1-x-1 system.

Dual Emission in a Ligand and Metal Co-Doped Lanthanide-Organic Framework: Color Tuning and Temperature Dependent Luminescence

In this study, we report the luminescence color tuning in the lanthanide metal-organic framework (LnMOF) ([La(bpdc)Cl(DMF)] (1); bpdc^2- = [1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-dicarboxylate, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) by introducing dual emission properties in a La³⁺ MOF scaffold through doping with the blue fluorescent 2,2'-diamino-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-dicarboxylate (dabpdc^2-) and the red emissive Eu³⁺. With a careful adjustment of the relative doping levels of the lanthanide ions and bridging ligands, the color of the luminescence was modulated, while at the same time the photophysical characteristics of the two chromophores were retained. In addition, the photophysical properties of the parent MOF (1) and its doped counterparts with various dabpdc^2-/bpdc^2- and Eu³⁺/La³⁺ ratios and the photoinduced energy transfer pathways that are possible within these materials are discussed. Finally, the temperature dependence study on the emission profile of a doped analogue containing 10% dabpdc^2- and 2.5% Eu³⁺ (7) is presented, highlighting the potential of this family of materials to behave as temperature sensors.

Construction of fluorescence active MOFs with symmetrical and conformationally rigid N-2-aryl-triazole ligands

1,4-Bis-triazole-substituted arene (NAT) was designed and synthesized for the construction of metal organic frameworks. Unlike the tri-phenyl analogs, which give a twisted conformation between three benzene rings due to the A-1,3 repulsion, the NAT-ligand gave the energetically favored co-planar conformation with the strong fluorescence emission. With this ligand, two new MOFs, NAT-MOF-Cd (2,3,4-c) and NAT-MOF-Cu (4-c), were successfully obtained with the structure confirmed by X-ray. With the six-coordinated Cd(ii) cluster, an interesting metal–ligand coordination and H-bonding hybridized porous polymeric structures were observed. In contrast, a typical Cu(ii) paddle wheel coordination was obtained with NAT and Cu, giving a new MOF structure with moderate stability in aqueous solution from pH 1–11 for 24 hours, which suggests a promising future for applications in fluorescence sensing and photocatalysis.

Odd-Even Effect on Luminescence Properties of Europium Aliphatic Dicarboxylate Complexes

The odd-even effect in luminescent [Eu₂ (L)₃ (H₂ O)_x ]⋅y(H₂ O) complexes with aliphatic dicarboxylate ligands (L: OXA, MAL, SUC, GLU, ADP, PIM, SUB, AZL, SEB, UND, and DOD, where x=2-6 and y=0-4), prepared by the precipitation method, was observed for the first time in lanthanide compounds. The final dehydration temperatures of the Eu³⁺ complexes show a zigzag pattern as a function of the carbon chain length of the dicarboxylate ligands, leading to the so-called odd-even effect. The FTIR data confirm the ligand-metal coordination via the mixed mode of bridge-chelate coordination, except for the Eu³⁺ -oxalate complex. XRD results indicate that the highly crystalline materials belong to the monoclinic system. The odd-even effect on the 4 f-4 f luminescence intensity parameters (Ω₂ and Ω₄ ) is explained by using an extension of the dynamic coupling mechanism, herein named the ghost-atom model. In this method, the long-range polarizabilities ( α * ) were simulated by a ghost atom located at the middle of each ligand chain. The values of α * were estimated using the localized molecular orbital approach. The emission intrinsic quantum yield ( Q L n L n ) of the Eu³⁺ complexes also presented an the odd-even effect, successfully explained in terms of the zigzag behavior shown by the Ω₂ and Ω₄ intensity parameters. Luminescence quenching due to water molecules in the first coordination sphere is also discussed and rationalized.

Magnetic and luminescent coordination networks based on imidazolium salts and lanthanides for sensitive ratiometric thermometry

The synthesis and characterization of six new lanthanide networks [Ln(L)(ox)(H₂O)] with Ln = Eu³⁺, Gd³⁺, Tb³⁺, Dy³⁺, Ho³⁺ and Yb³⁺ is reported. They were synthesized by solvo-ionothermal reaction of lanthanide nitrate Ln(NO₃)₃·xH₂O with the 1,3-bis(carboxymethyl)imidazolium [HL] ligand and oxalic acid (H₂ox) in a water/ethanol solution. The crystal structure of these compounds has been solved on single crystals and the magnetic and luminescent properties have been investigated relying on intrinsic properties of the lanthanide ions. The synthetic strategy has been extended to mixed lanthanide networks leading to four isostructural networks of formula [Tb_{1- x} Eu _x (L)(ox)(H₂O)] with x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.10. These materials were assessed as luminescent ratiometric thermometers based on the emission intensities of ligand, Tb³⁺ and Eu³⁺. The best sensitivities were obtained using the ratio between the emission intensities of Eu³⁺ (⁵D₀→⁷F₂ transition) and of the ligand as the thermometric parameter. [Tb_0.97Eu_0.03(L)(ox)(H₂O)] was found to be one of the best thermometers among lanthanide-bearing coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks, operative in the physiological range with a maximum sensitivity of 1.38%·K^-1 at 340 K.

Synthesis, Structures and Luminescence Properties of Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Lithium-Lanthanide and Terephthalate

Metal-organic frameworks assembled from Ln(III), Li(I) and rigid dicarboxylate ligand, formulated as [LiLn(BDC)₂(H₂O)·2(H₂O)] (MS1-6,7a) and [LiTb(BDC)₂] (MS7b) (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, Y_0.96Eu_0.04, Y_0.93Tb_0.07, and H₂BDC = terephthalic acid), were obtained under hydrothermal conditions. The isostructural MS1-6 crystallize in monoclinic P2₁/c space group. While, in the case of Tb³⁺ a mixture of at least two phases was obtained, the former one (MS7a) and a new monoclinic C2/c phase (MS7b). All compounds have been studied by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analyses (TGA), vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX). The structures of MS1-6 and MS7a are built up of inorganic-organic hybrid chains. These chains constructed from unusual four-membered rings, are formed by edge- and vertex-shared {LnO₈} and {LiO₄} polyhedra through oxygen atoms O3 (vertex) and O6-O7 (edge). Each chain is cross-linked to six neighboring chains through six terephthalate bridges. While, the structure of MS7b is constructed from double inorganic chains, and each chain is, in turn, related symmetrically to the adjacent one through the c glide plane. These chains are formed by infinitely alternating {LiO₄} and {TbO₈} polyhedra through (O2-O3) edges to create Tb–O–Li connectivity along the c-axis. Both MS1-6,7a and MS7b structures possess a 3D framework with 1D trigonal channels running along the a and c axes, containing water molecules and anhydrous, respectively. Topological studies revealed that MS1-6 and MS7a have a new 2-nodal 3,10-c net, while MS7b generates a 3D net with unusual β-Sn topology. The photoluminescence properties Eu- and Tb-doped compounds (MS5-6) are also investigated, exhibiting strong red and green light emissions, respectively, which are attributed to the efficient energy transfer process from the BDC ligand to Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺.
