Abstract
To study the switching properties of photochromes, we undertook the synthesis and characterization of several ruthenium organometallic complexes of the type [Ru(Cp*)(dppe)(C≡C-SP)] or [Ru(CO)(dppe)(PPh3)Cl(CH═CH-SP)], where SP = spiropyran. The spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of the complexes were determined by careful cyclic voltammetric and spectroelectrochemical experiments. Whereas the mononuclear alkynyl ruthenium complexes undergo one-electron oxidations localized over the metal alkynyl moiety, the oxidation of the mononuclear vinyl ruthenium complexes is centered on the indoline moiety of the spiropyran. Through these studies, we demonstrate access to several stable redox states, in addition to switching states attained via acidochromism and/or photoisomerization.

Abstract
In this article, we report the successful molecular engineering of Ru bis-acetylides that led for the first time to a gelator and more specifically in aromatic solvents. By means of a nonlinear ligand and an extended aromatic platform, the bulky Ru bis-acetylides were able to self-assemble into lamellar structures as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in benzene, toluene, and o- and m-xylene, which in turn induced gelation of the solution with a critical gelation concentration of 30 mg/mL. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), variable temperature (VT)-NMR, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies evidenced that hydrogen bonds are mainly responsible for the self-organization. VT-NMR and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) have also suggested that the pro-ligand and the complex stack in different ways.

Abstract
Organometallic molecular wires with π-conjugation along their molecular backbones are of considerable interest for application in molecular-scale electronics. In this regard, thienylethynyl-based π-conjugated oligomers of three, five and seven thienylethynyl units with -C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-H termini have been successfully synthesized through stepwise Pd(0)/Cu(i)-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling. The corresponding highly soluble diruthenium(ii) diacetylide complexes (O1-Ru2, O3-Ru2, O5-Ru2 and O7-Ru2, respectively) have been prepared by the reaction of cis-Ru(dppe)2Cl2 and NaPF6 in DCM with the corresponding rigid rod-like thienylethynyl oligomers with one, three, five and seven thienylethynyl π-conjugated segments containing alkynyl termini (O1, O3, O5 and O7). These Ru(ii)-Cl capped diacetylide complexes have been further functionalized by incorporating a phenylacetynyl moiety to afford [Ru(ii)-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C-Ph]-capped diacetylide organometallic wires (O1-Ru2-Ph, O3-Ru2-Ph, O5-Ru2-Ph and O7-Ru2-Ph). The photophysical properties of the highly soluble thienylethynyl-based oligomers and Ru(ii)-organometallic wires have been explored to understand their electronic properties. Electrochemical studies of the binuclear ruthenium(ii)-alkynyl complexes showed highly interesting results, revealing long-range electrochemical communication between the two remote Ru(ii) termini connected even with five and seven thienylethynyl units. DFT computational studies further support the long range electrochemical communication between the redox active metal termini through heavy participation of the thienylethynyl bridge in the corresponding mono-oxidized mixed valence species of the organometallic wire-like complexes.

Abstract
Homo-dinuclear nonlinear complexes [{M(dppe)Cp*}2{μ-(-C≡C)2X}] (dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane; Cp* = η5-C5Me5; X = triphenylamine (TPA), M = Ru (1a) and Fe (1b); X = N,N,N',N'-tetraphenylphenylene-1,4-diamine (TPPD), M = Ru (2a)) were prepared and characterized by 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (1a, 2a). Attempts to prepare the diiron analogue of 2a were not successful. Experimental data obtained from cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR (NIR = near-infrared) spectro-electrochemistry, and very informative IR spectro-electrochemistry in the C≡C stretching region, combined with density functional theory calculations, afford to make an emphasizing assessment of the close association between the metal-ethynyl termini and the oligophenylamine bridge core as well as their respective involvement in sequential one-electron oxidations of these complexes. The anodic behavior of the homo-bimetallic complexes depends strongly both on the metal center and the length of the oligophenylamine bridge core. The poorly separated first two oxidations of diiron complex 1b are localized on the electronically nearly independent Fe termini. In contrast, diruthenium complex 1a exhibits a significantly delocalized character and a marked electronic communication between the ruthenium centers through the diethynyl-TPA bridge. The ruthenium-ethynyl halves in 2a, separated by the doubly extended and more flexible TPPD bridge core, show a lower degree of electronic coupling, resulting in close-lying first two anodic waves and the NIR electronic absorption of [2a]+ with an indistinctive intervalence charge transfer character. Finally, the third anodic waves in the voltammetric responses of the homo-bimetallic complexes are associated with the concurrent exclusive oxidation of the TPA or TPPD bridge cores.

Abstract
Metallamacrocylic tetraruthenium complexes were generated by treatment of 1,4-divinylphenylene-bridged diruthenium complexes with functionalized 1,3-benzene dicarboxylic acids and characterized by HR ESI-MS and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. Every divinylphenylene diruthenium subunit is oxidized in two consecutive one-electron steps with half-wave potential splittings in the range of 250 to 330 mV. Additional, smaller redox-splittings between the +/2+ and 0/+ and the 3+/4+ and 2+/3+ redox processes, corresponding to the first and the second oxidations of every divinylphenylene diruthenium entity, are due to electrostatic effects. The lack of electronic coupling through bond or through space is explained by the nodal properties of the relevant molecular orbitals and the lateral side-by-side arrangement of the divinylphenylene linkers. The polyelectrochromic behavior of the divinylphenylene diruthenium precursors is retained and even amplified in these metallamacrocyclic structures. EPR studies down to T=4 K indicate that the dications 1-H(2+) and 1-OBu(2+) are paramagnetic. The dications and the tetracation of macrocycle 3-H display intense (dications) or weak (3-H(4+) ) EPR signals. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that the four most stable conformers of the macrocycles are largely devoid of strain. Bond parameters, energies as well as charge and spin density distributions of model macrocycle 5-H(Me) were calculated for the different charge and spin states.

The CVs display two consecutive one-electron redox events with ΔE°'=350-495 mV. A linear relationship between ΔE°' and the σp Hammett constant for 10 a-f was found. IR, UV/Vis/NIR and EPR studies for 10(+) -13(+) confirm full charge delocalization over the {Ru}CH-CH-heterocycle-CH-CH{Ru} backbone, classifying them as Class III systems according to the Robin and Day classification. DFT-optimized structures of the neutral complexes agree well with the experimental ones and provide insight into the structural consequences of stepwise oxidations.

Abstract
Reactions of cis-RuCl2(dppm)2 with various terminal alkynes, of the type HC≡CC6H4-4-R (1 equiv.), in the presence of TlBF4 have resulted in the formation of cationic vinylidene complexes trans-[RuCl(=C=CHC6H4-4-R)(dppm)2]BF4 ([1]BF4). These complexes can be isolated, or treated in situ with a suitable base (Proton Sponge, 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene) to yield the mono-alkynyl complexes trans-RuCl(C≡CC6H4-4-R)(dppm)2 (2). Through similar reactions between cis-RuCl2(dppm)2 with 2 equiv. of alkyne, TlBF4 and base, trans-bis(alkynyl) complexes, trans-Ru(C≡CC6H4-4-R)2(dppm)2 (3), can be isolated when R is an electron withdrawing substituent (R = NO2, COOMe, C≡CSiMe3), whereas reactions with alkynes bearing electron donating substituents (R = OMe and Me) form cationic η(3)-butenynyl complexes [Ru(η(3)-{HC(C6H4-4-R)=CC≡CC6H4-4-R})(dppm)2](+) ([4](+)). This work highlights the importance of the electronic character of the alkyne in influencing product outcome.

Abstract
The bis(vinyl ruthenium)-modified squaraine dye 1 was synthesized by treatment of [RuHCl(CO)(PiPr(3) )(2) ] with bis(ethynyl)-substituted squaraine 8. Spectroscopic and electrochemical measurements on 1 and its organic precursors 6-8 were performed to study the effect of the vinyl ruthenium "substituents," particularly with respect to (poly)electrochromism. Attachment of the vinyl ruthenium moieties endows metal-organic squaraine 1 with two additional oxidation waves and lowers the first two oxidation potentials by approximately 300 mV with respect to its organic precursors. Squaraines 6, 7, 8, and 1 strongly absorb at 648, 663, 656, or 709 nm. Although organic dyes 6, 7, and 8 fluoresce, no room-temperature emission is observed for 1. The radical cations and anions of 6, 7, 8, and 1 as well as the doubly oxidized dications have been studied by IR and UV/Vis/NIR spectroelectrochemistry, and the -/0/+/2+ redox sequences were found to be reversible in each case. Our results indicate that the 1(2-/-/0/+/2+) redox system constitutes a polyelectrochromic switch in which absorption in the visible or the near-infrared range is reversibly turned off or shifted deep into the NIR. They also show that radical cation 1(.+) is an intrinsically delocalized system with only little contribution from the outer vinyl ruthenium tags to the oxidation process. Dication 1(2+) constitutes a class-II mixed-valent system with two electronically different vinyl ruthenium moieties and has an open-shell singlet electronic ground-state structure. ESR and NMR spectra of chemically prepared 1(.+) and 1(2+) corroborate these results. It has also emerged that reduction involves an orbital that is strongly delocalized across the entire squaraine π system and strongly affects the peripheral vinyl ruthenium sites.
