Abstract
Defined arrays of transition metal ions embedded in tailored polydentate ligand scaffolds allow for a systematic design of their physical properties. Such molecular strings of closed-shell transition metal centers are particularly interesting for Group 11 metal ions in the oxidation state +1 if they undergo metallophilic d10···d10 contact interactions since these clusters are oftentimes efficient photoluminescence (PL) emitters. Copper is particularly attractive as a sustainable earth-abundant coinage metal source and because of the ability of several CuI complexes to serve as powerful thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters in molecular/organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Our combined synthetic, crystallographic, photophysical, and computational study describes a straight tetracuprous array possessing a centrally disconnected CuI2···CuI2 chain and a continuous helically bent CuI4 complex. This molecular helix undergoes a facile rearrangement in diethyl ether solution, yielding an unprecedented nanosized CuI10 cluster (2.9 × 2.0 nm) upon crystallization. All three clusters show either bright blue phosphorescence, TADF, or green/yellow multiband phosphorescence with quantum yields between 6.5 and 67%, which is persistent under hydrostatic pressure up to 30 kbar. Temperature-dependent PL investigations in combination with time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations and void space analyses of the crystal packings complement a comprehensive correlation between the molecular structures and photoluminescence properties.

Abstract
Metal-metal bonded species involving lanthanides are intriguing but rare. The recently reported salt metathesis reaction of an Al anion and SmI2(thf)2 yields novel heterometallic compound possessing two distinctive Al-Sm bonds. Although the Al-Sm bonds were considerably long [3.518(1) and 3.543(1) Å], DFT calculations indicated polar character of the Alδ--Smδ+ bonds. This is the first example of lanthanide species containing X-type Al ligands. Reactivity studies have demonstrated that the introduction of Sm(II) produces unique reactivity. The reaction with carbodiimide led to an insertion of carbodiimide into the Al-Sm bonds and reductive coupling of carbodiimide to create an oxalamidinate moiety, facilitated by Sm(II). Exposure of the Al-Sm-Al complex toward ethylene furnished a Sm(II) salt of anionic aluminacyclopropane that was spontaneously isomerized to a 1,4-dialuminacyclohexane derivative. The important role of Sm(II) to facilitate the ring expansion through an alkyl-relay mechanism was elucidated by DFT calculations.

Abstract
The syntheses of the ytterbium(II) distannyl [Yb{Sn(SiMe3)3}2·(thf)4] (Yb-Sn) and of its digermyl analogue [Yb{Ge(SiMe3)3}2·(thf)3] (Yb-Ge) are presented. The compounds were characterised by multinuclear high-resolution solution NMR spectroscopy, including 171Yb NMR, and by X-ray diffraction crystallography. The bonding and electronic properties of the two complexes, along with those of the known ytterbium(II) disilyl derivative [Yb{Si(SiMe3)3}2·(thf)3] (Yb-Si) and those of the congeneric calcium distannyl [Ca{Sn(SiMe3)3}2·(thf)4] (Ca-Sn), were investigated in detail by DFT calculations. This analysis points at a primarily ionic Yb-tetrel bonding, with a small covalent contribution, attributed principally to the 5d(Yb) participation. This weak covalent character is found to be larger for the distannyl Yb-Sn than for its lighter Si- and Ge-derivatives. The covalent component is also found to be greater in Yb-Sn than in Ca-Sn, due to the availability of the 5d(Yb) orbitals for bonding.

Abstract
Hexadentate bis(amidines) form versatile networks of hydrogen bonds both in solid state and solution, as revealed by X-ray crystallography, IR, and NMR spectroscopy. Moreover, the corresponding bis(amidinates) produce blue and green emissions in THF solution. Tethered tetradentate bis(amidines) have emerged in coordination chemistry, enantioselective catalysis, as building blocks for polyfunctional heterocycles, and in photoluminescent materials. The next generation of flexible bis(amidine)/bis(amidinate) platforms with up to six N-donor sites has now been established.

Abstract
Heteroleptic Ln(II) and Ca(II) amides [tBuC(NC6H3-iPr2-2,6)2]MN(SiMe3)2(THF) (M = Yb (1Yb), Ca (1Ca)), [2-MeOC6H4NC(tBu)N(C6H3-iPr2-2,6)]LnN(SiMe3)2(THF) (Ln = Sm (2Sm), Yb (2Yb)), and [2-Ph2P(O)C6H4NC(tBu)N(C6H3-Me2-2,6)]YbN(SiMe3)2(THF) (3Yb) coordinated by bi- and tridentate amidinate ligands were obtained by the amine elimination reactions of M[N(SiMe3)2](THF)2 (M = Yb, Sm, Ca) with parent amidines in good yields. Complex [tBuC(NC6H3-iPr2-2,6)2]SmN(SiMe3)2 can be obtained only by a salt metathesis reaction of [tBuC(NC6H3-2,6-iPr2)2]SmI(THF)2 with NaN(SiMe3)2. Unlike 1Yb and 1Ca in 1Sm the amidinate ligand is coordinated to metal ion in κ(1)-amido:η(6)-arene fashion preventing THF coordination. The derivatives of tridentate amidinate ligands bearing pendant donor 2-MeOC6H4 or 2-Ph2P(O)C6H4N groups feature nonconventional κ(1)-N,κ(2)-O,η(6)-arene coordination mode. Complexes 1Ca, 1Sm, 1Yb, 2Sm, 2Yb, and 3Yb proved to be efficient catalysts for styrene hydrophosphination with PhPH2 and Ph2PH. In styrene hydrophosphination with PhPH2 all the catalysts perform excellent chemoselectivity and afford a monoaddition product-secondary phosphine (PhCH2CH2)PhPH. Moreover, all the catalysts perform hydrophosphination reactions regioselectively with exclusive formation of the anti-Markovnikov addition product. Within the series of complexes coordinated by the same amidinate ligand catalytic activity decreases in the following order 1Ca ≥ 1Sm>1Yb. The turnover frequencies were in the range of TOF ≈ 0.3-0.7 h(-1). However, application of tridentate amidinate ligand allowed one to increase catalytic activity significantly: for 2Sm TOF was found to be 8.3 h(-1). For the addition of PhPH2 to para-substituted styrenes catalyzed by 2Sm it was found that electron-withdrawing substituents (Cl, F) do not affect the reaction rate while electron-donating groups (tBu, OMe) noticeably slow down the reaction.
