Abstract
Detailed photophysical investigation of a Mn(IV)-carbene complex has revealed that excitation into its lowest-energy absorption band (∼500 nm) results in the formation of an energetic ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) state with a lifetime of 15 ns. To the best of our knowledge, this is the longest lifetime reported for charge-transfer states of first-row-based transition metal complexes in solution, barring those based on Cu, with a d10 configuration. A so-called superoxidant, Mn(IV)-carbene exhibits an excited state potential typically only harnessed via excited states of reactive organic radical species. Furthermore, the long-lived excited state in this case is found to be a dark doublet, with its transition to the quartet ground state being spin-forbidden, a contrast to most first-row literature examples, and a possible cause of the long lifetime. Showcasing excited state properties which in some cases exceed those of complexes based on precious metals, these findings not only advance the library of earth-abundant photosensitizers but also shed general insight into the photophysics of d3 and related Mn complexes.

Abstract
Strongly donating scorpionate ligands support the study of high-valent transition metal chemistry; however, their use is frequently limited by oxidative degradation. To address this concern, we report the synthesis of a tris(imidazol-5-ylidene)borate ligand featuring trifluoromethyl groups surrounding its coordination pocket. This ligand represents the first example of a chelating poly(imidazol-5-ylidene) mesoionic carbene ligand, a scaffold that is expected to be extremely donating. The {NiNO}10 complex of this ligand, as well as that of a previously reported strongly donating tris(imidazol-2-ylidene)borate, has been synthesized and characterized. This new ligand's strong donor properties, as measured by the υNO of its {NiNO}10 complex and natural bonding orbital second-order perturbative energy analysis, are at par with those of the well-studied alkyl-substituted tris(imidazol-2-ylidene)borates, which are known to effectively stabilize high-valent intermediates. The good donor properties of this ligand, despite the electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl substituents, arise from the strongly donating imidazol-5-ylidene mesoionic carbene arms. These donor properties, when combined with the robustness of trifluoromethyl groups toward oxidative decomposition, suggest this ligand scaffold will be a useful platform in the study of oxidizing high-valent transition-metal species.

Abstract
A convenient synthesis of [HB(HImMe)3](PF6)2 (ImMe = N-methylimidazolyl) is decribed. This salt serves in situ as a precursor to the tris(imidazolylidenyl)borate Li[HB(ImMe)3] pro-ligand upon deprotonation with nBuLi. Reaction with [W(≡CC6H4Me-4)(CO)2(pic)2(Br)] (pic = 4-picoline) affords the carbyne complex [W(≡CC6H4Me-4)(CO)2{HB(ImMe)3}]. Interrogation of experimental and computational data for this compound allow a ranking of familiar tripodal and facially coordinating ligands according to steric (percentage buried volume) and electronic (νCO) properties. The reaction of [W(≡CC6H4Me-4)(CO)2{HB(ImMe)3}] with [AuCl(SMe2)] affords the heterobimetallic semi-bridging carbyne complex [WAu(μ-CC6H4Me-4)(CO)2(Cl){HB(ImMe)3}].

Abstract
For its important roles in biology, nitrogen monoxide (·NO) has become one of the most studied and fascinating molecules in chemistry. ·NO itself acts as a "noninnocent" or "redox active" ligand to transition metal ions to give metal-NO (M-NO) complexes. Because of this uncertainty due to redox chemistry, the real description of the electronic structure of the M-NO unit requires extensive spectroscopic and theoretical studies. We previously reported the Ni-NO complex with a hindered N3 type ligand [Ni(NO)(L3)] (L3- denotes hydrotris(3-tertiary butyl-5-isopropyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate anion), which contains a high-spin (hs) nickel(II) center and a coordinated 3NO-. This complex is very stable toward dioxygen due to steric protection of the nickel(II) center. Here, we report the dioxygen reactivity of a new Ni-NO complex, [Ni(NO)(I)(L1″)], with a less hindered N2 type bis(pyrazolyl)methane ligand, which creates a coordinatively unsaturated ligand environment about the nickel center. Here, L1″ denotes bis(3,5-diisopropyl-1-pyrazolyl)methane. This complex is also described as a hs-nickel(II) center with a bound 3NO-, based on spectroscopic and theoretical studies. Unexpectedly, the reaction of [Ni(NO)(I)(L1″)] with O2 yielded [Ni(κ2-O2N)(L1″)2](I3), with the oxidation of both 3NO- and the I- ion to yield NO2- and I3-. Both complexes were characterized by X-ray crystallography, IR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy and theoretical calculations.

Abstract
The chemistry of the tris-carbene anion phenyltris(3-alkyl-imidazoline-2-yliden-1-yl)borate, [C3Me]- ligand, is initiated for f-block metal cations. Neutral, molecular complexes of the form Ln(C3)2I are formed for cerium(III), while a separated ion pair [Ln(C3)2]I forms for ytterbium(III). DFT/QTAIM computational analyses of the complexes and related tridentate tris(pyrazolyl)borate (Tp) - supported analogs demonstrates the anticipated strength of the σ donation and confirms greater covalency in the metal-carbon bonds of the [C3Me]- complexes in comparison with those in the TpMe,Me complexes. The DFT calculations demonstrate the crucial role of THF solvent in accurately reproducing the contrasting molecular and ion-pair geometries observed experimentally for the Ce and Yb complexes.

Abstract
When oxidants favour cleaving a strong C-H bond at the expense of weaker ones, which are otherwise inherently preferred due to their favourable reaction energy, reactivity factors such as the polarity match effect are often invoked. Polarity match follows the intuition of electrophilic (nucleophilic) oxidants reacting faster with nucleophilic (electrophilic) C-H bonds. Nevertheless, this concept is purely qualitative and is best suited for a posteriori rationalization of experimental observations. Here, we propose and inspect two methods to quantify polar effects in C-H cleavage reactions, one by computation via the difference of atomic charges (Δq) of reacting atoms, and one amenable to experimental measurement through asynchronicity factors, η. By their application to three case studies, we observe that both Δq and η faithfully capture the notion of polarity match. The polarity match model, however, proves insufficient as a predictor of H-atom abstraction reactivity and we discourage its use as a standalone variable in reaction design. Besides this caveat, η and Δq (through its mapping on η) allow the implementation of polarity match into a Marcus-type model of reactivity, alleviating its shortcomings and making reaction planning feasible.

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis of a benzimidazolylidene-stabilized borane adduct and its borenium ion. This borenium ion was used as a metal-free catalyst for hydrogenating various substituted quinoline N-heterocycles under ambient conditions. Furthermore, this method was utilized to synthesize two drug molecules: galipinine and angustureine. A detailed DFT study was performed to understand this metal-free catalytic hydrogenation.

The
photofunctionality of the cobalt–hexacarbene complex
[Co(III)(PhB(MeIm)3)2]+ (PhB(MeIm)3 = tris(3-methylimidazolin-2-ylidene)(phenyl)borate)
has been investigated by time-resolved optical spectroscopy. The complex
displays a weak (Φ ∼ 10–4) but remarkably
long-lived (τ ∼ 1 μs) orange photoluminescence
at 690 nm in solution at room temperature following excitation with
wavelengths shorter than 350 nm. The strongly red-shifted emission
is assigned from the spectroscopic evidence and quantum chemical calculations
as a rare case of luminescence from a metal-centered state in a 3d6 complex. Singlet oxygen quenching supports the assignment
of the emitting state as a triplet metal-centered state and underlines
its capability of driving excitation energy transfer processes.

Abstract
We present herein anionic borate-based bi-mesoionic carbene compounds of the 1,2,3-triazol-4-ylidene type that undergo C-N isomerization reactions. The isomerized compounds are excellent ligands for CoII centers. Strong agostic interactions with the "C-H"-groups of the cyclohexyl substituents result in an unusual low-spin square planar CoII complex, which is unreactive towards external substrates. Such agostic interactions are absent in the complex with phenyl substituents on the borate backbone. This complex displays a high-spin tetrahedral CoII center, which is reactive towards external substrates including dioxygen. To the best of our knowledge, this is also the first investigation of agostic interactions through single-crystal EPR spectroscopy. We conclusively show here that the structure and properties of these CoII complexes can be strongly influenced through interactions in the secondary coordination sphere. Additionally, we unravel a unique ligand rearrangement for these classes of anionic mesoionic carbene-based ligands.

Abstract
The use of iron in photoactive metal complexes has been investigated for decades. In this respect, the charge transfer (CT) states are of particular interest, since they are usually responsible for the photofunctionality of such compounds. However, only recently breakthroughs have been made in extending CT excited state lifetimes that are notoriously short-lived in classical polypyridine iron coordination compounds. This success is in large parts owed to the use of strongly σ-donating N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands that help manipulating the photophysical and photochemical properties of iron complexes. In this review we aim to map out the basic design principles for the generation of photofunctional iron NHC complexes, summarize the progress made so far and recapitulate on the synthetic methods used. Further, we want to highlight the challenges still existing and give inspiration for future generations of photoactive iron complexes.

Abstract
Utilizing the bulky guanidinate ligand [LAr*]- (LAr* = (Ar*N)2C(R), Ar* = 2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-4-tert-butylphenyl, R = NCtBu2) for kinetic stabilization, the synthesis of a rare terminal Fe(IV) nitride complex is reported. UV irradiation of a pyridine solution of the Fe(II) azide [LAr*]FeN3(py) (3-py) at 0 °C cleanly generates the Fe(IV) nitride [LAr*]FeN(py) (1). The 15N NMR spectrum of the 115N (50% Fe≡15N) isotopomer shows a resonance at 1016 ppm (vs externally referenced CH3NO2 at 380 ppm), comparable to that known for other terminal iron nitrides. Notably, the computed structure of 1 reveals an iron center with distorted tetrahedral geometry, τ4 = 0.72, featuring a short Fe≡N bond (1.52 Å). Inspection of the frontier orbital ordering of 1 shows a relatively small HOMO/LUMO gap with the LUMO comprised by Fe(dxz,yz)N(px,y) π*-orbitals, a splitting that is manifested in the electronic absorption spectrum of 1 (λ = 610 nm, ε = 1375 L·mol-1·cm-1; λ = 613 nm (calcd)). Complex 1 persists in low-temperature solutions of pyridine but becomes unstable at room temperature, gradually converting to the Fe(II) hydrazide product [κ2-(tBu2CN)C(η6-NAr*)(N-NAr*)]Fe (4) upon standing via intramolecular N-atom insertion. This reactivity of the Fe≡N moiety was assessed through molecular orbital analysis, which suggests electrophilic character at the nitride functionality. Accordingly, treatment of 1 with the nucleophiles PMe2Ph and Ar-N≡C (Ar = 2,6-dimethylphenyl) leads to partial N-atom transfer and formation of the Fe(II) addition products [LAr*]Fe(N═PMe2Ph)(py) (5) and [LAr*]Fe(N═C═NAr)(py) (6). Similarly, 1 reacts with PhSiH3 to give [LAr*]Fe[N(H)(SiH2Ph)](py) (7) which Fukui analysis shows to proceed via electrophilic insertion of the nitride into the Si-H bond.

Abstract
The tris[(1-isopropylbenzimidazol-2-yl)dimethylsilyl]methyl ligand, [TismPriBenz], has been employed to form carbatrane compounds of both the main group metals and transition metals, namely [TismPriBenz]Li, [TismPriBenz]MgMe, [TismPriBenz]Cu and [TismPriBenz]NiBr. In addition to the formation of atranes, a zinc compound that exhibits κ3-coordination, namely [κ3-TismPriBenz]ZnMe, has also been obtained. Furthermore, the [TismPriBenz] ligand may undergo a thermally induced rearrangement to afford a novel tripodal tris(N-heterocyclic carbene) variant, as shown by the conversion of [TismPriBenz]Cu to [κ4-C4-TismPriBenz*]Cu. The transannular M-C bond lengths in the atrane compounds are 0.19-0.32 Å longer than the sum of the respective covalent radii, which is consistent with a bonding description that features a formally zwitterionic component. Interestingly, computational studies demonstrate that the Cu-Catrane interactions in [TismPriBenz]Cu and [κ4-C4-TismPriBenz*]Cu are characterized by an "inverted ligand field", in which the occupied antibonding orbitals are localized more on carbon than on copper.

Abstract
The molecular bis-(tris(carbene)borate) manganese(IV) complex [{PhB(MeIm)3}2Mn](OTf)2 shows 2Eg → 4A2g luminescence at 828 nm in the solid state at 85 K; this wavelength is longer by approximately 100 nm than the wavelengths typically observed for manganese(IV) and chromium(III) doped solids and for molecular chromium(III) complexes. Weak luminescence is also observed from a LMCT excited state with an absorption maximum at 500 nm. This represents the first molecular manganese(IV) compound for which luminescence has been reported.

Abstract
Structural, spectroscopic and magnetic methods have been used to characterize the tris(carbene)borate compound PhB(MesIm)3Mn≡N as a four-coordinate manganese(IV) complex with a low spin (S = 1/2) configuration. The slow relaxation of the magnetization in this complex, i.e. its single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties, is revealed under an applied dc field. Multireference quantum mechanical calculations indicate that this SMM behavior originates from an anisotropic ground doublet stabilized by spin-orbit coupling. Consistent theoretical and experiment data show that the resulting magnetization dynamics in this system is dominated by ground state quantum tunneling, while its temperature dependence is influenced by Raman relaxation.

Abstract
Electronic structure calculations are performed to characterise the structures, energies, and spectroscopic data for a series of four-coordinate tris(carbene)borate {NiNO}(10) complexes. There is excellent agreement between the computational and experimental results for known complexes, allowing for structure-function relationships to be delineated. Calculations that provide insights into the synthetic accessibility of nickel(iv) nitrides by oxygen atom abstraction from these complexes are also reported.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations at the B3LYP/DGDZVP and UB3LYP/TZVP levels were performed on 1,3-bis[1-(2,6-dimethylphenylimino)ethyl]imidazolium and on the corresponding imidazol-2-ylidene iron(II) dichloride complex, respectively. The resulting geometrical parameters of the optimized structures were in good agreement with previously reported X-ray structures. The ground state for the high-spin (quintet multiplicity) iron complex is 82.4 kJ/mol lower in energy compared to the low-spin (triplet) configuration, in agreement with magnetic susceptibility measurements. Further calculations were carried out on related benzimidazol-2-ylidene and pyrimidin-2-ylidene ligands and on the corresponding iron complexes to gain insight into their electronic properties and reactivities. The energy of the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of all three carbenes suggests that the pyrimidin-2-ylidene and the benzimidazol-2-ylidene are the best σ-donor and best π-acceptor, respectively. Using those results, the metal center in the pyrimidin-2-ylidene iron dichloride complex was predicted to bear the highest electron density. This was supported by the high relative energy of its highest occupied molecular orbital compared to that of the corresponding imidazole-2-ylidene and benzimidazol-2-ylidene iron complexes. The electrostatic potential maps of all three metal complexes furthermore indicated a marked decrease in electron density for the coordinated imine group, supporting a greater reactivity towards nucleophiles.

Abstract
The great majority of {NiNO}(10) complexes are characterized by short Ni-N(O) distances of 1.60-1.65 Å and linear NO units. Against this backdrop, the {CuNO}(10) unit in the recently reported [Cu(CH3NO2)5(NO)](2+) cation (1) has a CuNO angle of about 120° and a very long 1.96 Å Cu-N(O) bond. According to DFT calculations, metal-NO bonding in 1 consists of a single Cu(dz(2))-NO(π*) σ-interaction and essentially no metal(dπ)-NO(π*) π-bonding, which explains both the bent CuNO geometry and the long, weak Cu-N(O) bond. This σ-interaction is strongly favored by a ligand trans to the NO; indeed such a trans ligand may be critical for the existence and stability of a {CuNO}(10) unit. By contrast, {NiNO}(10) complexes exhibit a strong avoidance of such trans ligands. Thus, a five-coordinate {NiNO}(10) complex appears to favor a trigonal-bipyramidal structure with the NO in an equatorial position, as in the case of [Ni(bipy)2(NO)](+) (6). An unusual set of Ni(d)-NO(π*) orbital interactions accounts for the strongly bent NiNO geometry for this complex.

Abstract
A twisted bis-benzimidazolium salt was isolated from the reaction of 5,6-dihydroxyl-benzimidazolium and benzenediboronic acid. Deprotonation of the azolium salt led to the formation of a spiroborate-linked bis-NHC, which was further transformed into the corresponding diborane adduct and the di-Rh complex.

Abstract
A straightforward synthesis of a new hybrid scorpionate ligand [(allyl)2B(CH2PPh2)(Pz)](-) ([A2BPN](-)) is reported. Coordination to rhodium resulted in square-planar complexes [Rh(κ(2)-A2BPN)(L)(L')] [L = L' = (1)/2cod (1,5-cyclooctadiene), CN(t)Bu, CO (6); L = CO, L' = NH3, pyridine, PPh3, PMe3] for which spectroscopic data and the molecular structure of [Rh(κ(2)-A2BPN)(CO)PPh3] (11) indicate the ligand to be κN,κP-bound to rhodium with two dangling free allyl groups. Studies in solution point out that the six-membered Rh-N-N-B-C- P metallacycle undergoes a fast inversion in all of them. The bis(carbonyl) complex 6 easily loses a CO group to give [{Rh(A2BPN)(CO)}2], a dinuclear compound in which two mononuclear subunits are brought together by two bridging allyl groups. Coordination to iridium is dominated by a tripodal κN,κP,η(2)-C═C binding mode in the TBPY-5 complexes [Ir(κ(3)-A2BPN)(L)(L')] [L = L' = (1)/2cod (3), CN(t)Bu (5), CO (7); L = CO, L' = PPh3 (13), PMe3 (14), H2C═CH2, (17), MeO2CC≡CCO2Me (dmad, 18)], as confirmed by the single-crystal structure determination of complexes 3 and 18. A fast exchange between the two allyl arms is observed for complexes having L = L' (3, 5, and 7), while those having CO and L ligands (14, 17, and 18) were found to be nonfluxional species. An exception is complex 13, which establishes an equilibrium with the SP-4 configuration. Protonation reactions on complexes 13 and 14 with HCl yielded the hydride complex [Ir(κ(2)-A2BPN)(CO)(Cl)(H)PPh3] (15) and the C-alkyl compound [ Ir{κ(3)-(allyl)B(CH2 CHCH3)(CH2PPh2)(Pz)}(Cl)(CO)PMe3] (16), respectively. The bis(isocyanide) complex 5 reacts with dmad to form [Ir(κ(2)-A2BPN)(CN(t)Bu)2(dmad)]. On the whole, the electronic density provided to the metal by the [A2BPN](-) ligand is very sensitive to the coordination mode. The basicity of the new ligand is similar to that of the Tp(Me2) ligand in the κN,κP mode but comparable to Tp if coordinated in the κN,κP,η(2)-C═C mode.

Dinuclear gold(I) complexes with propylene bridged N-heterocyclic dicarbene ligands: synthesis, structures, and trends in reactivities and properties. Dalton Trans 2013; 42:10952-63. Abstract
Four novel dinuclear N-heterocyclic dicarbene gold(I) complexes with a propylene linker between the carbene moieties have been synthesized and their luminescence and electrochemical properties, together with their reactivity towards bromine oxidative addition, have been screened. All the complexes emit in the solid state in the blue-green spectral range (400-500 nm) with appreciable intensities (Φ(em) up to ≈10%). In cyclic voltammetry, the Au(I)/Au(0) peak splits at low temperature into two separate peaks relative to the couples Au(I)-Au(I)/Au(I)-Au(0) and Au(I)-Au(0)/Au(0)-Au(0), thus indicating the presence of an Au···Au interaction in the dinuclear complex. Oxidative addition of bromine affords as a major or unique product Au(II)-Au(II) complexes most likely as a consequence of the interaction between the two gold centres favoured by the propylene linker.
