Mn4 single-molecule-magnet-based polymers of a one-dimensional helical chain and a three-dimensional network: syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic properties

Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization in Anilato-Based Dy(III) 2D Lattices

The search for two- and three-dimensional materials with slow relaxation of the magnetization (single-ion magnets, SIM and single-molecule magnets, SMM) has become a very active area in recent years. Here we show how it is possible to prepare two-dimensional SIMs by combining Dy(III) with two different anilato-type ligands (dianions of the 3,6-disubstituted-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone: C₆O₄X₂²⁻, with X = H and Cl) in dimethyl sulfoxide (dmso). The two compounds prepared, formulated as: [Dy₂(C₆O₄H₂)₃(dmso)₂(H₂O)₂]·2dmso·18H₂O (1) and [Dy₂(C₆O₄Cl₂)₃(dmso)₄]·2dmso·2H₂O (2) show distorted hexagonal honeycomb layers with the solvent molecules (dmso and H₂O) located in the interlayer space and in the hexagonal channels that run perpendicular to the layers. The magnetic measurements of compounds 1, 2 and [Dy₂(C₆O₄(CN)Cl)₃(dmso)₆] (3), a recently reported related compound, show that the three compounds present slow relaxation of the magnetization. In compound 1 the SIM behaviour does not need the application of a DC field whereas 2 and 3 are field-induced SIM (FI-SIM) since they show slow relaxation of the magnetization when a DC field is applied. We discuss the differences observed in the crystal structures and magnetic properties based on the X group of the anilato ligands (H, Cl and Cl/CN) in 1–3 and in the recently reported derivative [Dy₂(C₆O₄Br₂)₃(dmso)₄]·2dmso·2H₂O (4) with X = Br, that is also a FI-SIM.

Various Structural Types of Cyanide-Bridged FeIII-MnIII Bimetallic Coordination Polymers (CPs) and Polynuclear Clusters Based-on A New mer-Tricyanoiron(III)Building Block: Synthesis, Crystal Structures, and Magnetic Properties

Four cyanide-bridged Fe^III–Mn^III complexes {[Fe(qxcq)(CN)₃][Mn(L¹)(H₂O)]}[Mn(L¹)(H₂O)(CH₃OH)](ClO₄)·1.5MeOH·0.5H₂O (L¹ = N,N′-bis(3-methoxy-5-bromosalicylideneiminate) (2), {[Fe(qxcq)(CN)₃][Mn(L²)]}₂·0.5H₂O (L² = N,N′-ethylene-bis(3-ethoxysalicylideneiminate)) (3), [Fe(qxcq)(CN)₃][Mn(L³)] (L³ = bis(acetylacetonato)ethylenediimine) (4), [Fe(qxcq)(CN)₃][Mn(L⁴)]·1.5MeOH·0.5CH₃CN·0.25H₂O (L⁴ = N,N′-(1,1,2,2-tetramethylethylene)bis(salicylideneiminate)) (5), were prepared by assembling a new structurally characterized mer-tricyanoiron(III) molecular precursor (Ph₄P)[Fe(qxcq)(CN)₃]·0.5H₂O (qxcq⁻ = 8-(2-quinoxaline-2-carboxamido)quinoline anion) (1) and the corresponding manganese(III) Schiff base compound. Complexes 2and 3containa cyanide-bridged heterobimetallic dinuclear entity, which can be further dimerized by self-complementary H-bond interactions through the coordinated water molecule from one complex and the free O₄unit from the adjacent complex. Complexes 4 and 5 area one-dimensional coordination polymer (CP) comprised of the repeated [Mn(Schiffbase)-Fe(qxcq)(CN)₃] units. Complex 4 shows a linear-chain conformation with two trans-located cyano groups bridgingthe neighboring Mn units, while complex 5 is a zigzag-like 1D CP, where the two cyano groups in cis configurationfunction as bridges. In bothcomplexes 4 and 5, the inter-chain π–πstack interactions within the aromaticrings of cyanide precursor extend the 1D chain into the supermolecular 2D networks. The magnetic property has been experimentally studied and theoretically fitted over the four Fe(III)-Mn(III) complexes, revealing the antiferromagnetic interaction in complexes 2 and 4 and the unusual ferromagnetic coupling in complexes 3 and 5 between the Fe(III) ion and the Mn(III) ion bridged by the cyano group. Furthermore, the different magnetic coupling nature has been analyzed on the basis of the magneto-structure correlation of the mer-tricyanometallate-based Fe(III)-Mn(III) magnetic system.

Slow magnetic relaxation in a Tb(iii)-based coordination polymer

A Tb(iii)-based coordination polymer (polyTb) was synthesized by complexation of Tb(NO3)3·(6H2O) and 4',4''''-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diylbis[6,6''-bis(ethoxycarbonyl)2':6',2''-terpyridine](L). The polymer structure was determined by Job's plots, DFT calculation, and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurement. Job's plots indicated that the mole ratio (Tb ion : L) is 1 : 1. The optimized model structures suggested a La model: the LaN6(O[double bond, length as m-dash]C)2 model. The bond distances of La-O and La-N are ∼2.80 Å and 2.60 Å, respectively. The EXAFS fitting indicated that the bond distances of Tb-O and Tb-N are 2.65 Å and 2.95 Å, respectively. polyTb shows field-induced magnetic relaxation in the solid and solution state. The luminescence of polyTb, originating from an f-f transition, was observed (φ = 6.9%). polyTb formed a porous structure on a Si substrate, whereas a fibrous complex structure was formed on glass. polyTb chains are orientated on glass, which were determined by XRD.

Assembly of a series of coordination polymers built from rigid a tetracarboxylate ligand and flexible bis(imidazole) linker: syntheses, structural diversities, luminescence sensing, and photocatalytic properties

Hydrothermal reactions of aromatic terphenyl-4,2'',5'',4'-tetracarboxylic acid (H₄tta) and transitional metal cations in the presence of two flexible N-donor ancillary ligands afforded four novel coordination polymers, namely, {[Zn(tta)_0.5(m-bimb)]·H₂O}_n (1), [Ni₂(tta)(m-bimb)₂(H₂O)]_n (2), [Ni(H₂tta)(o-bimb)·H₂O]_n (3), and [Cd(tta)_0.5(o-bimb)]_n (4), from solvothermal reactions in the presence of bis(imidazole) bridging linkers (m-bimb = 1,3-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, and o-bimb = 1,2-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene). Their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and further characterized by elemental analyses (EA), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and thermogravimetric (TG) analyses. Compound 1 displayed a 2-fold 3D → 3D parallel entangled (4,4)-connected bbf net with the point symbol of (6⁴·8²)(6⁶)₂. Compound 2 featured a predocumented 3D (4,8)-connected (3²·5³·6)(3⁴·4⁴·5⁹·6¹¹) net. Compound 3 exhibited a 2D 4-connected sql sheet with the point symbol of (4⁴·6²), and compound 4 showed a 2D 4-connected (3²·6²·7²) kgm sheet. To our delight, fluorescence measurements showed that compound 1 could selectively and sensitively detect Cr³⁺ cations and nitrobenzene derivatives (nitrobenzene (NB), p-nitrotoluene (PNT), and p-nitroaniline (PNA)), which suggested that CPs of 1 was a promising bifunctional luminescence sensor material that could sense metal ions and small organic molecules. Moreover, 1 showed excellent photocatalytic activity.

A one dimensional coordination polymer composed of antiferromagnetically coupled disk-like [Mn7] units

Formation of TbPc2 Single-Molecule Magnets' Covalent 1D Structures via Acyclic Diene Metathesis

We present here a reaction scheme to connect TbPc₂ single-molecule magnets into 1D architectures using acyclic diene metathesis. To investigate the impact of the bonding through aliphatic chains on the magnetic properties of TbPc₂, we isolate and characterize the dimeric species obtained as one of the products of the reaction. Remarkably, the magnetic properties are only slightly modified after the formation of the bond between molecules, enlightening the great potential of this reaction scheme.

Construction and magnetic study of two new dysprosium complexes with chain or tetranuclear structure

Two novel dysprosium complexes with one-dimensional or tetranuclear structure exhibiting distinct slow magnetic relaxation were reported.

Solvent dependent reactivities of di-, tetra- and hexanuclear manganese complexes: syntheses, structures and magnetic properties

An unusual solvent effect on the synthesis of five manganese complexes [Mn2(L1)2(Py)4](), [Mn2(L1)2(DMSO)4](), [Mn4(L2)4(OH)4](), [Mn4(L3)2(DMSO)7(H2O)](), and [Mn6O2(L4)4(OAc)2(OMe)2(DMSO)4]·MeOH] (), (H3L1 = 5-(2-oxyphenyl)-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid; H2L2 = 5-(2-oxyphenyl)-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid amide; H4L3 = di-[5-(2-oxyphenyl)-pyrazole]-3-hydroxamic ether; and H2L4 = 5-(2-oxyphenyl)-pyrazole-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester) has been reported. Five complexes have been characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction, IR, element analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and UV-vis spectra. The analysis reveals that complexes and are isostructural with a bimetallic six-membered ring and L1 from the decomposition of the original H4ppha (H4ppha = 5-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-pyrazole-3-hydroxamic acid) ligand. Complexes and are two tetranuclear clusters, and possesses an aza12-metallacrown-4 core with L2 from the amide functionalization of the decomposition L1; while represents a novel linear [Mn4N8O2] core with L3 from the condensation of L1 and H4ppha. Complex is the first Mn6 cluster linked by two stacked, off-set 8-azametallacrown-3 subunits with [M-N-N-M-N-N-M-O] connectivity, and L4 derived from the esterification of L1. The magnetic behaviour of complexes show the dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between metal centers, whereas complex further reveals the coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions, and slow magnetic relaxation at T < 6 K with S = 4 ground state, as well as field induced magnetization saturation.

Five MOFs with different topologies based on anthracene functionalized tetracarboxylic acid: syntheses, structures, and properties

Mn(ii) coordination polymers assembled from 8 or 9-connected trinuclear secondary building units: topology analysis and research of magnetic properties

Two highly-connected trinuclear Mn(ii)-cluster polymers were successfully fabricated. The FC and ZFC data of 1 show a divergence over a temperature range of 40–3.5 K. 2 features a ferrimagnetic chain with a (5/2, 10/2) spin topology.

S-shaped decanuclear heterometallic [Ni8Ln2] complexes [Ln(iii) = Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho]: theoretical modeling of the magnetic properties of the gadolinium analogue

S-shaped [Ni₈Ln₂] complexes were synthesized and characterized. Strong Ni^II–Ni^II antiferromagnetic interactions and weak Ni^II–Ln^III interactions were observed.

Five Cd(ii) coordination polymers based on 2,3′,5,5′-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid and N-donor coligands: syntheses, structures and fluorescent properties

Two-dimensional coordination polymers constructed by [Ni(II)Ln(III)] nodes and [W(IV)(bpy)(CN)6]2- spacers: a network of [Ni(II)Dy(III)] single molecule magnets

Three isomorphous two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers of general formula {[Ni(II)(valpn)Ln(III)(NO3)(H2O)(μ-NC)4W(IV)(bipy)(CN)2]·xH2O·yCH3CN}n have been synthesized by reacting Ph4P[W(V)(CN)6(bipy)] with the heterodinuclear [Ni(II)Ln(III)(valpn)(O2NO)3] complexes [H2valpn = 1,3-propanediyl-bis(2-iminomethylene-6-methoxyphenol), bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, and Ln = Gd (1), Dy (2), and Tb (3) with x = 2 (1), 3.9 (2), and 3.35 (3) and y = 2.50 (1), 2 (2), and 1.8 (3)]. Their crystal structures consist of [Ni(II)Ln(III)] 3d-4f nodes which are connected by [W(IV)(bipy)(CN)6](2-) diamagnetic linkers resulting from the reduction of W(V) to W(IV) during the reaction process. The Ni(II) and Ln(III) ions occupy the inner and outer coordination sites of the dideprotonated valpn ligand, respectively, and they are doubly bridged by the phenoxo oxygen atoms of such a ligand. The value of Ni(II)···Ln(III) separation through this bridge is 3.4919(10) (1), 3.4760(10) (2), and 3.4799(9) (3) Å, and those of the angles at the bridgehead phenoxo atoms are 106.6(2) and 107.3(2) (1), 106.9(2), and 107.8(2) (2) and 106.5(2)-106.8(2)° (3). Each W(IV) is eight-coordinated with a bidentate bipy molecule and six cyanide-carbon atoms building a somewhat distorted square antiprism environment. The rare-earth cations are nine-coordinated, the donor atoms describing a monocapped square antiprism for 1 and 3 and a tricapped trigonal prism for 2. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 1.9-300 K show the occurrence of ferromagnetic interactions between the Ni(II) and Ln(III) ions in 1-3. Frequency-dependent alternating susceptibility signals were observed for the Dy(III) derivative below 8.0 K under an applied dc field of 2500 G indicating the presence of slow magnetic relaxation with values of the pre-exponential factor (τ0) and energy barrier (E(#)) of ca. 5.7 × 10(-8) s and 15.9 cm(-1), respectively. Complex 2 constitutes the first example of a 2D 3d-4f heterobimetallic single molecule magnet (SMM).

Three novel 1D lanthanide-carboxylate polymeric complexes: syntheses, crystal structures and magnetic analyses

Three novel one-dimensional (1D) lanthanide coordination complexes involving the 4-methyl-3-nitrobenzoic acid (HL) ligand, with the general formulae [Gd(L)3(H2O)(CH3OH)] (1), [Gd(L)3(H2O)2]·(4,4'-bpy)·CH3OH (2), [Dy(L)3(H2O)(CH3OH)] (3), have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions. These complexes have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, PXRD, TGA, and elemental analysis. Complexes 1 and 3 are isostructural except for the distinction of the metal ion. Magnetic measurements indicate that complexes 1-3 show antiferromagnetic behaviors. Complex 3 behaves with slow relaxation of the magnetization, where the frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals are noticed. However, the characteristic maxima were not reached above 2 K under zero direct current (DC) fields. When a DC field of 5000 Oe was employed, the frequency dependent peaks of alternating current (AC) signals were obtained.
