Facile Metalation of Hbzq by [cis-Pt(C6F5)2(thf)2]: A Route to a Pentafluorophenyl Benzoquinolate Solvate Complex That Easily Coordinates Terminal Alkynes. Spectroscopic and Optical Properties

High Selectivity in Csp2-Csp2 versus Csp3-O Reductive Elimination from Cycloplatinated(IV) Complexes

The cycloplatinated(IV) complexes trans-[Pt(p-MeC6H4)(C∧N)(OAc)2(H2O)] (C∧N = benzo[h]quinolate, bhq, 2a, and 2-phenylpyridinate, ppy, 2b) were prepared by reacting the corresponding [Pt(p-MeC6H4)(C∧N)(SMe2)] precursors with PhI(OAc)2 through an oxidative addition (OA) reaction. Thermolysis of 2a at 65 °C generates cis-[Pt(κ1N-10-(p-MeC6H4)-bhq)(OAc)2(H2O)], 3a, which is the product of a Csp2Ar-Csp2bhq reductive elimination (RE). The observed coupling reaction is significantly different from the previously reported analogous thermolysis of trans-[PtMe(C∧N)(OAc)2(H2O)] (C∧N = bhq, 2c, and ppy, 2d) that selectively releases Me-OAc (C-O RE). The density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental observations reveal that the Csp2Ar-Csp2bhq coupling reaction occurs through the dissociation of a coordinated water ligand. This in turn is followed by the concomitant bond forming and bond breaking process via a three-center ring transition state, in contrast to the Csp3Me-OAc coupling, which had taken place by an outer sphere SN2 type RE reaction in methyl complexes.

Platinum complexes with aggregation-induced emission

Transition metal-containing materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) have brought new opportunities for the development of biological probes, optoelectronic materials, stimuli-responsive materials, sensors, and detectors. Coordination compounds containing the platinum metal have emerged as a promising option for constructing effective AIE platinum complexes. In this review, we classified AIE platinum complexes based on the number of ligands. We focused on the development and performance of AIE platinum complexes with different numbers of ligands and discussed the impact of platinum ion coordination and ligand structure variation on the optoelectronic properties. Furthermore, this review analyzes and summarizes the influence of molecular geometries, stacking models, and aggregation environments on the optoelectronic performance of these complexes. We provided a comprehensive overview of the AIE mechanisms exhibited by various AIE platinum complexes. Based on the unique properties of AIE platinum complexes with different numbers of ligands, we systematically summarized their applications in electronics, biological fields, etc. Finally, we illustrated the challenges and opportunities for future research on AIE platinum complexes, aiming at giving a comprehensive summary and outlook on the latest developments of functional AIE platinum complexes and also encouraging more researchers to contribute to this promising field.

Ladder-like heteropolynuclear assemblies via cyanido bridges and platinum(II)-thallium(I) bonds: structural and photophysical properties

We describe the mononuclear anionic cyanido-pentafluorophenyl complexes, (NBu4)[Pt(C^N)(C6F5)(CN)] [C^N = 7,8-benzoquinolate (bzq) 1, 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridinate (dfppy) 2] and the heteropolynuclear derivatives [{Pt(C^N)(C6F5)(CN)}Tl] (C^N = bzq 3, dfppy 4). These complexes were synthesized via a two-step modular synthesis by reaction of the corresponding potassium salts K[Pt(C^N)(C6F5)(CN)], prepared in situ from [Pt(C^N)(C6F5)(DMSO)] and KCN in acetone/H2O, with TlPF6. The structures of {[Pt(bzq)(C6F5)(CN)Tl]·THF}n (3·THF)n and [{Pt(dfppy)(C6F5)(CN)}Tl]4·dioxane [4]4·dioxane, determined by X-ray crystallography, confirm the presence of Pt(II)-Tl(I) bonds [2.9795(6)-3.0736(3) Å], but in the dfppy complex, the incorporation of dioxane, causes a significant structural change. Thus, whereas [3·THF]n achieves a bent-ladder shape extended double chain Tl⋯[Pt⋯Tl]n⋯Pt supported by lateral bridging [Pt](μ-CN)[Tl] ligands, [4]4·dioxane is formed by discrete Pt4Tl4 rectangular aggregates stabilized by [Pt](μ-CN)[Tl] and Pt⋯Tl bonds, which are connected by dioxane bridging molecules through Tl⋯O(dioxane) additional contacts. Solid state emissions are redshifted compared with the mononuclear derivatives 1 and 2 and have been assigned, with the support of theoretical calculations on Pt4Tl4 models, to metal-metal'-to-ligand charge transfer (3MM'LCT [d/s σ*(Pt, Tl) → π*(C^N)]) for 3 and mixed 3MM'LCT/3IL for 4. In fluid THF solution, the complexes are not emissive. At 77 K, 3 and 4 exhibit bright emissions attributed to the formation of bimetallic [{Pt(C^N)(C6F5)(CN)}Tl(THF)x], and anionic [Pt(C^N)(C6F5)(CN)]- fragments. Furthermore, both 3 and 4 exhibit a reversible mechanochromism with a red shift of the emissions upon crushing, suggesting some degree of shortening of metal-metal separation. Finally, complex 3 shows solvatochromic behavior with color/luminescence changes by treatment with a drop of MeOH, CH2Cl2, THF or Et2O, with shifts from 583 in 3-MeOH to 639 nm in 3-THF. However, 4 only demonstrates a bathochromic response to MeOH.

cis/trans-[Pt(C∧N)(C≡CR)(CNBut)] Isomers: Synthesis, Photophysical, DFT Studies, and Chemosensory Behavior

cis/trans Isomerism can be a crucial factor for photophysical properties. Here, we report the synthesis and optical properties of a series of trans- and cis-alkynyl/isocyanide cycloplatinated compounds [Pt(C^∧N)(C≡CR)(CNBu^t)] [R = C₆H₄-4-OMe 1, 3-C₄H₃S 2; C^∧N = 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine (dfppy) (a), 4-(2-pyridyl)benzaldehyde (ppy-CHO) (b)]. The trans-forms do not isomerize thermally in MeCN solution to the cis forms, but upon photochemical irradiation in this medium at 298 K, a variable isomerization to the cis forms was observed. This behavior is in good agreement with the theoretically calculated energy values. The trans/cis configuration, the identity of the cyclometalated, and the alkynyl ligand influence on the absorption and emission properties of the complexes in solution, polystyrene (PS) films, and solid state are reported. All complexes are efficient triplet emitters in all media (except for trans-1a and trans-2a in CH₂Cl₂ solution at 298 K), with emission wavelengths depending mainly on the cyclometalated ligand in the region 473-490 nm (dfppy), 510-550 (ppy-CHO), and quantum yields (ϕ) ranging from 18.5 to 40.7% in PS films. The combined photophysical data and time-dependent density functional theory calculations (TD-DFT) at the excited-state T₁ geometry reveal triplet excited states of ³L'LCT (C≡CR → C^∧N)/³IL (C^∧N) character with minor ³MLCT contribution. The dfppy (a) complexes show a greater tendency to aggregate in rigid media than the ppy-CHO (b) and the cis with respect to the trans, showing red-shifted structureless bands of ³MMLCT and/or excimer-like nature. Interestingly, trans-1a,2a and cis-1a,2a undergo significant changes in the ultraviolet (UV) and emission spectra with Hg²⁺ ions enabling their use for sensing of Hg²⁺ ions in solution. This is clearly shown by the hypsochromic shift and substantial decrease of the low-energy absorption band and an increase of the intensity of the emission in the MeCN solution upon the addition of a solution of Hg(ClO₄)₂ (1:5 molar ratio). Job's plot analysis estimated a 1:1 stoichiometry in the complexation mode of Hg²⁺ by trans-2a. The binding constant (log K) calculated for this system from absorption titration data resulted to be 2.56, and the limit of the detection (LOD) was 6.54 × 10^-7 M.

Luminescent Anionic Cyclometalated Organoplatinum (II) Complexes with Terminal and Bridging Cyanide Ligand: Structural and Photophysical Properties

We present the synthesis and characterization of two series of mononuclear heteroleptic anionic cycloplatinated(II) complexes featuring terminal cyanide ligand Q⁺[Pt(C^N)(p-MeC₆H₄)(CN)]^- [C^N = benzoquinolate (bzq), Q⁺ = K⁺ 1 and NBu₄⁺ 4; 2-phenylpyridinate (ppy), Q⁺ = K⁺ 2 and NBu₄⁺ 5 and 2-(2,4- difluorophenyl)pyridinate (dfppy), Q⁺ = K⁺ 3 and NBu₄⁺ 6] and a series of symmetrical binuclear complexes (NBu₄)[Pt₂(C^N)₂(p-MeC₆H₄)₂(μ-CN)] (C^N = bzq 7, ppy 8, dfppy 9). Compounds 5, 6, and 7-9 were further determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. There are no apparent intermolecular Pt···Pt interactions owing to the presence of bulky NBu₄⁺ counterion. Slow crystallization of K[Pt(ppy)(p-MeC₆H₄)(CN)] 2 in acetone/hexane evolves with formation of yellow crystals, which were identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods as the salt complex {[Pt(ppy)(p-MeC₆H₄)(CN)]₂K₃(OCMe₂)₄(μ-OCMe₂)₂}[Pt(ppy)(p-MeC₆H₄)(μ-CN)Pt(ppy)(p-MeC₆H₄)]·2acetone (10), featuring the binuclear anionic unit 8^- neutralized by an hybrid inorganic-organometallic coordination polymer {[Pt(ppy)(p-MeC₆H₄)(CN)]₂K₃(OCMe₂)₄(μ-OCMe₂)₂}⁺. The photophysical properties of all compounds were recorded in powder, polystyrene film, and solution states with a quantum yield up to 21% for 9 in the solid state. All complexes displayed bright emission in rigid media, and for the interpretation of their absorption and emission properties, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations were applied.

Photophysical Properties and Kinetic Studies of 2-Vinylpyridine-Based Cycloplatinated(II) Complexes Containing Various Phosphine Ligands

A series of cycloplatinated(II) complexes with general formula of [PtMe(Vpy)(PR₃)], Vpy = 2-vinylpyridine and PR₃ = PPh₃ (1a); PPh₂Me (1b); PPhMe₂ (1c), were synthesized and characterized by means of spectroscopic methods. These cycloplatinated(II) complexes were luminescent at room temperature in the yellow–orange region’s structured bands. The PPhMe₂ derivative was the strongest emissive among the complexes, and the complex with PPh₃ was the weakest one. Similar to many luminescent cycloplatinated(II) complexes, the emission was mainly localized on the Vpy cyclometalated ligand as the main chromophoric moiety. The present cycloplatinated(II) complexes were oxidatively reacted with MeI to yield the corresponding cycloplatinated(IV) complexes. The kinetic studies of the reaction point out to an S_N2 mechanism. The complex with PPhMe₂ ligand exhibited the fastest oxidative addition reaction due to the most electron-rich Pt(II) center in its structure, whereas the PPh₃ derivative showed the slowest one. Interestingly, for the PPhMe₂ analog, the trans isomer was stable and could be isolated as both kinetic and thermodynamic product, while the other two underwent trans to cis isomerization.

Geometrically isomeric Pt2Ag2 acetylide complexes of 2,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)pyridine: luminescent and vapochromic properties

From homonuclear to heteronuclear: a viable strategy to promote and modulate phosphorescence

The use of weakly emissive homonuclear Pt(ii) precursors to fabricate Pt–M heteronuclear complexes with intermetallic contacts paves a unique avenue to achieve highly efficient phosphorescence as well as modulate emission energy.

A double rollover cycloplatinated(ii) skeleton: a versatile platform for tuning emission by chelating and non-chelating ancillary ligand systems

Described here is the synthesis and characterization of heteroleptic binuclear platinum(ii) complexes of the type [Pt2(μ-bpy-2H)(S^S)2] and [Pt2(μ-bpy-2H)(L)2(X)2], containing a 2,2'-bipyridine-based double rollover cycloplatinated core (Pt(μ-bpy-2H)Pt), in combination with the anionic S^S- chelate ligands di(ethyl)dithiocarbamate (dedtc) and O,O'-di(cyclohexyl)dithiophosphate (dcdtp) or non-chelating L/X ancillary ligands (PPh3/Me, t-BuNC/Me, PPh3/SCN and PPh3/N3). The new complexes were characterized using multinuclear (1H, 31P and 195Pt) NMR spectroscopy and some of them additionally using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The absorption and photoluminescence of the complexes show a strong dependence on the ancillary ligands. Upon excitation at 365 nm, in a CH2Cl2 rigid matrix (77 K), the complexes exhibit structured emission bands with λmax between 488 nm and 525 nm and vibrational spacing around 1350 cm-1, indicating the excited states centered on the cyclometalated ligand (3ILCT) with some mixing 3MLCT characteristics. In the case of the PPh3/N3 complex, a dual emission band (orange color) is observed in the solid state at 298 K for which the low energy band arises from an aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Upon lowering the temperature (77 K), thermochromism is observed (orange to yellow) which is accompanied by the intensification of the high energy band (ligand-centered structured band). Finally, in order to rationalize the obtained photophysical data, complete DFT (density functional theory) and TD-DFT (time-dependent DFT) calculations were performed on the selected complexes.

Benzothiazole-Based Cycloplatinated Chromophores: Synthetic, Optical, and Biological Studies

Cycloplatinated complexes based on 2-(4-substituted)benzothiazole ligands of type [Pt(R-PBT-κC,N)Cl(L)] (PBT=2-phenylbenzothiazole; R=Br (1), Me₂ N (2); L=dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO; a), 1,3,5- triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA; b), triphenylphosphine 3,3',3''-trisulfonate (TPPTS; c)) and [Pt(Br-PBT-κC)Cl(PTA)₂ ] (3) are presented. On the basis of the photophysical data and time-dependent (TD)-DFT calculations (1 a and 2 a), the low-lying transitions (absorption and emission) were associated with ligand-center (LC) charge transfer, with minor metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT), and intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) [Me₂ N-PBT→PBT] excited states, respectively. Simultaneous fluorescence/phosphorescence bands were found in fluid solutions (and also in the solid state for 2 a), which become dominated by triplet emission bands in rigid media at 77 K. The effect of the concentration on emissive behavior of 2 a, b indicated the occurrence of aggregation-induced luminescence properties related to the occurrence of metal-metal and π⋅⋅⋅π interactions, which are more enhanced in 2 a because of the less bulky DMSO ligand. The behavior of 2 a toward para-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA) in aerated acetonitrile and to hydrogen chloride gas in the solid state has been evaluated, thus showing a clear reversible change between the ¹ ILCT and ³ LC/³ MLCT states due to protonation of the NMe₂ group (theoretical calculations on 2 a-H⁺ ). Solid 2 a undergoes a surprising oxidation of the Pt^II center to Pt^IV with concomitant deoxygenation of DMSO, under prolonged reaction with hydrogen chloride gas to afford the Pt^IV /dimethyl sulfide complex (mer-[Pt(Me₂ N-PBT-κC,N)Cl₃ (SMe₂ )]; mer-4), which evolves in solution to fac-4, as confirmed by X-ray studies. Cytotoxic activity studies on A549 and HeLa cell lines indicated cytotoxic activity of 1 b and 2 a, b. In addition, fluorescent cell microscopy revealed cytoplasmic staining, more visible in perinuclear areas. Inhibition of tubulin polymerization by 1 b in both cells is presented as a preliminary mechanism of its cytotoxic action.

Synthesis, Biological Evaluation, and Molecular Docking Studies on the DNA Binding Interactions of Platinum(II) Rollover Complexes Containing Phosphorus Donor Ligands

Cyclometalated rollover complexes of the type [PtMe(κ² N,C-bipyO-H)(L)] [bipyO-H=cyclometalated 2,2'-bipyridine N-oxide; L=tricyclohexylphosphine (PCy₃ , 2 a), 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine (PPh₂ py, 2 b), P(OPh)₃ (2 c)] were synthesized by treating [PtMe(κ² N,C-bipyO-H)(SMe₂ )] (1) with various monodentate phosphine and phosphite ligands. These complexes were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, and the structure of 2 a was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 was treated with bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) at a 1:1 ratio to give the corresponding [PtMe(κ² N,C-bipyO-H)(κ¹ P-dppm)] (3 b) complex, in which the dppm ligand acts as a monodentate pendant ligand. The biological activities of these complexes were evaluated against a panel of four standard cancer cell lines: lung carcinoma (A549), ovarian carcinoma (OV-90 and SKOV3), and breast carcinoma (MCF-7). Complexes 2 c and especially 3 b indicated effective potent cytotoxic activity regarding the cell lines. Electrophoresis mobility shift assays and molecular-modeling investigations were performed to determine the specific binding mode and the binding orientation of these alkylating agents to DNA. Detection of cellular reactive oxygen species was also determined.

A new approach to the effects of isocyanide (CN-R) ligands on the luminescence properties of cycloplatinated(ii) complexes

Cycloplatinated complexes bearing isocyanides were prepared and characterized. The complexes exhibited strong luminescence while the nature of R substituents in isocyanides affected the luminescence characteristics.

Luminescence properties of some monomeric and dimeric cycloplatinated(ii) complexes containing biphosphine ligands

The starting complexes [PtCl(C^N)(dmso)], in which C^N is either ppy = 2-phenylpyridinate, , or bhq = 7,8-benzo[h]quinolinate, , were prepared by a known method using the reaction of [PtCl2(dmso)2] with ppyH or bhqH, respectively, in toluene under reflux conditions. The reaction of [PtCl(C^N)(dmso)], or , with 1 equiv. of a number of biphosphine ligands, P^P, gave the cationic monomeric complexes [Pt(ppy)(P^P)]Cl, for which P^P is either 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe), , 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp), , or bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm), ; the bhq analogous complex [Pt(bhq)(dppe)]Cl, , was prepared similarly. However, the complex [Pt(ppy)(dfppe)]Cl, , in which dfppe is 1,2-bis(dipentafluorophenylphosphino)ethane, was prepared by the reaction of with excess amount of dfppe. When each of the starting complexes [PtCl(C^N)(dmso)], or , were reacted with 0.5 equiv. of any of the P^P ligands, the dimeric complexes [Pt2Cl2(ppy)2(μ-P^P)], , or [Pt2Cl2(bhq)2(μ-P^P)], , were formed. The complexes were fully characterized using multinuclear ((1)H and (31)P) NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The structures of typical complexes , , , and were also confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The effect of ligands on the luminescent properties of the complexes was investigated and DFT calculations were performed to confirm the assignments.

Aromatic C-H Activation in the Triplet Excited State of Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Complexes Using Visible Light

The visible-light driven cyclometalation of arene substrates containing an N-donor heteroaromatic moiety as directing group by monocyclometalated Pt(II) complexes is reported. Precursors of the type [PtMe(C^N)(N^CH)], where N^CH is 2-phenylpyridine (ppyH) or related compunds with diverse electronic properties and C^N is the corresponding cyclometalated ligand, afford homoleptic cis-[Pt(C^N)2] complexes upon irradiation with blue LEDs at room temperature with evolution of methane. Heteroleptic derivatives cis-[Pt(ppy)(C'^N')] are obtained analogously from [PtMe(ppy)(N'^C'H)], where N'^C'H represents an extended set of heteroaromatic compounds. Experimental and computational studies demonstrate an unprecedented C-H oxidative addition, which is initiated by a triplet excited state of metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) character and leads to a detectable Pt(IV) methyl hydride intermediate.

Chiral cyclometalation of 6-(1-phenylbenzyl)-2,2'-bipyridine

A new bipyridine ligand, 6-(1-phenylbenzyl)-2,2'-bipyridine, has been prepared by a multistep synthesis starting from the corresponding substituted pyridine. The coordinating properties of the new ligand have been tested with two d(8) metal ions, Pt(ii) and Pd(ii), to give the cyclometalated complexes [Pt(N,N,C)Cl] and [Pd(N,N,C)Cl], where N,N,C is a terdentate deprotonated bipyridine containing a new stereogenic carbon atom directly generated by C-H bond activation. The single-crystal of the platinum complex has been solved by X-ray diffraction. DFT calculations confirm the presence of a PtH interaction that stabilizes one of the two possible conformers by 14.7 kJ mol(-1) for Pt and 12.9 kJ mol(-1) for Pd. The energy barrier to pass from one conformer to the other is 25.4 and 23.8 kJ mol(-1) respectively. Under different reaction conditions, regioselective activation of a pyridine C-H bond gave the less common cyclometalated rollover complex [Pt(L-H)Me(DMSO)], which was isolated and characterised.

Photophysical and DFT studies on cycloplatinated complexes: modification in luminescence properties by expanding of π-conjugated systems

C–H reductive elimination during the reaction of cycloplatinated(ii) complexes with pyridine-2-thione: kinetic follow up

Reactions of the cycloplatinated(ii) complexes [PtR(ppy)(SMe₂)], 1, where ppy = deprotonated 2-phenylpyridine and R = Me or p-MeC₆H₄, with pyridine-2-thione, C₅H₅SN, were studied by UV-vis and ¹H NMR spectroscopies and on the basis of the data a mechanism is proposed.

Luminescent pentafluorophenyl-cycloplatinated complexes: synthesis, characterization, photophysics, cytotoxicity and cellular imaging

Pentafluorophenyl cycloplatinated complexes have been synthesized and their photophysical properties studied and investigated by DFT, TD-DFT calculations. The cellular localization and the cytotoxicity of [Pt(C^N)(C₆F₅)(DMSO)] complexes towards two different cell lines has been assessed.

Aggregation-induced emission: the whole is more brilliant than the parts

"United we stand, divided we fall."--Aesop. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) refers to a photophysical phenomenon shown by a group of luminogenic materials that are non-emissive when they are dissolved in good solvents as molecules but become highly luminescent when they are clustered in poor solvents or solid state as aggregates. In this Review we summarize the recent progresses made in the area of AIE research. We conduct mechanistic analyses of the AIE processes, unify the restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM) as the main cause for the AIE effects, and derive RIM-based molecular engineering strategies for the design of new AIE luminogens (AIEgens). Typical examples of the newly developed AIEgens and their high-tech applications as optoelectronic materials, chemical sensors and biomedical probes are presented and discussed.
