Sulfonate Complexes of Actinide Ions: Structural Diversity in Uranyl Complexes with 2-Sulfobenzoate

Uranyl-Tc(VII)/Tc(V) hybrid clusters

Pertechnetate (99TcVIIO4-), reduced Tc, and actinides co-exist in spent nuclear fuel and legacy wastes. They co-transport in fuel reprocessing and waste disposal scenarios, necessitating an understanding of co-speciation. Here, we report five new molecular cluster/framework structures with pentameric and tetrameric uranyl building units decorated by TcO4-/ReO4- oxoanions, or fused with the reduced technetyl cation Tc(V)O. The latter, obtained by Tc auto-reduction (without the intentional introduction of a reducing environment), broadens the basis for Tc-reduction and the burgeoning polyoxometalate-like behavior of technetium.

Weak, Broken, but Working-Intramolecular Hydrogen Bond in 2,2'-bipyridine

From an academic and practical point of view, it is desirable to be able to assess the possibility of the proton exchange of a given molecular system just by knowing the positions of the proton acceptor and the proton donor. This study addresses the difference between intramolecular hydrogen bonds in 2,2'-bipyridinium and 1,10-phenanthrolinium. Solid-state ¹⁵N NMR and model calculations show that these hydrogen bonds are weak; their energies are 25 kJ/mol and 15 kJ/mol, respectively. Neither these hydrogen bonds nor N-H stretches can be responsible for the fast reversible proton transfer observed for 2,2'-bipyridinium in a polar solvent down to 115 K. This process must have been caused by an external force, which was a fluctuating electric field present in the solution. However, these hydrogen bonds are the grain that tips the scales precisely because they are an integral part of a large system of interactions, including both intramolecular interactions and environmental influence.

Varied role of organic carboxylate dizwitterions and anionic donors in mixed-ligand uranyl ion coordination polymers

Two organic dizwitterions were combined with various anionic donors to generate a series of five uranyl ion complexes crystallizing as mono- or diperiodic coordination polymers, with separation into two distinct networks in one case.

Introducing Bluish-Green Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) and Tuning Their Color Intensity by Uranium Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Photoluminescence Studies of 8-Hydroxyquinoline Complexes of Uranium

To improve our understanding of the chemistry of actinide complexes and to spur their development in the field of actinide markers, two new uranium complexes were synthesized using 8-hydroxyquinoline and 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline. The prepared complexes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The impact of the electron-withdrawing group of the ligand on the photoluminescence spectra of the complexes in solution and in the solid state was scrutinized. The bandgap of the complexes was calculated using the density functional theory (DFT) method to investigate the effects of the electron-withdrawing groups on energy levels. The synthesized uranium complexes demonstrated appropriate levels of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy, leading to favorable dye stability. The prepared uranium complexes showed blue fluorescent emission, and the sample with the most intense fluorescence was used to construct bluish-green organic light-emitting diodes using simple solution processing fabrication methods. Absorbance spectra, emission spectra, DFT-calculated energy levels, and comparisons of the fabricated organic light-emitting diodes indicated that the electron-withdrawing group was a key factor in photoluminescence behavior.

Expanding uranyl dicyanoaurate coordination polymers into the second and third dimensions

The solvothermal synthesis and characterization of a three-dimensional, interpenetrated uranyl dicyanoaurate coordination polymer, K2(UO2)2(UO2)2(Au(CN)2)2(O)2(NO3)4, from UO2(NO3)2·6H2O and KAu(CN)2 is described. The structure contains a three-dimensional (3D) lattice of planar tetranuclear uranyl–oxo–nitrate clusters connected by dicyanoaurate linkers, with the rotation of the clusters providing the increased dimensionality. The material undergoes a reversible single-crystal to single-crystal transformation on exposure to water vapour, which is taken up in the channels of the 3D system. A second uranyl dicyanoaurate coordination polymer of the form [UO2(DMSO)3(H2O)(Au(CN)2)][Au(CN)2] was structurally characterized as a linear chain of dicyanoaurate units connected by gold–gold bonds with pendant uranyl–water–DMSO adducts that are hydrogen bonded into a two-dimensional sheet. Both materials exhibit emission arising from both the uranyl moiety and the gold(I) centre and represent the first multidimensional uranyl–dicyanoaurate coordination polymers.

The sulfonate group as a ligand: a fine balance between hydrogen bonding and metal ion coordination in uranyl ion complexes

Nine uranyl ion complexes have been synthesized using two kinds of sulfonate-containing ligands, i.e. 2-, 3- and 4-sulfobenzoic acids (2-, 3- and 4-SBH₂), which include additional carboxylic donors, and p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene (H₈C4S), with additional phenolic groups, and [Ni(cyclam)]²⁺, [Cu(R,S-Me₆cyclam)]²⁺ or PPh₄⁺ as counterions. [Ni(cyclam)][UO₂(4-SB)₂(H₂O)₂]·2CH₃CN (1) and [Ni(cyclam)][UO₂(3-SB)₂(H₂O)₂] (2) are molecular species in which only the carboxylate groups are coordinated to uranyl, the sulfonate groups being essentially hydrogen bond acceptors. In contrast, uranyl κ¹-O(S);κ¹-O(C)-chelation is found in the four complexes involving 2-SB^2-, different bridging interactions producing diverse geometries. [UO₂(2-SB)₂Ni(cyclam)]·H₂O (3) crystallizes as a two-dimensional (2D) assembly with fes topology, in which uranyl ion dimeric subunits are bridged by six-coordinate Ni^II cations. Complexes [UO₂(2-SB)₂Cu(R,S-Me₆cyclam)]₂·2H₂O (4) and [(UO₂)₂(2-SB)₂(C₂O₄)Cu(R,S-Me₆cyclam)] (5), obtained together from the same solution, are a molecular tetranuclear complex and a 2D species with fes topology, respectively, depending on the coordination number, 5 or 6, of the Cu^II cation. The complex [PPh₄]₂[(UO₂)₂(2-SB)₃(H₂O)]·H₂O (6) is a one-dimensional (1D), ribbon-like coordination polymer with a layered packing of alternate cationic and anionic sheets. No heterometallic complex was obtained with H₈C4S, but the copper-only compound [{Cu(R,S-Me₆cyclam)}₅(H₃C4S)₂]·17H₂O (7) displays mixed coordination/hydrogen bonding association of the copper azamacrocycle complex with the phenolic groups. The complexes [PPh₄]₅[UO₂(H₄C4S)(H₂O)₄][UO₂(H₃C4S)(H₂O)₄]·14H₂O (8) and [PPh₄]₃[UO₂(H₃C4S)(H₂O)₃]·9H₂O (9) were crystallized from the same solution and are a molecular complex and a 1D polymer, respectively, with monodentate sulfonate coordination to uranyl, while [PPh₄]₂[UO₂(H₄C4S)(H₂O)₃]·11H₂O (10) is also a 1D polymer. The anionic complexes in the last three complexes form layers (9) or double layers (8 and 10) separated from one another by hydrophobic layers of PPh₄⁺ cations. The balance between coordination and hydrogen bonding interactions with the macrocyclic ligands provides an indication of the energy of the sulfonate coordinate bond. Complex 6 is the only luminescent species in this series, albeit with a low quantum yield of 3%, and its emission spectrum is typical of a uranyl complex with five equatorial donors.

Multidimensional (0D to 3D) Alkaline-Earth Metal Diphosphonates: Synthesis, Structural Diversity, and Luminescence Properties

A series of new alkaline-earth metal diphosphonate frameworks were successfully synthesized under solvothermal reaction condition (160 °C, 3 d) using 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (CH3C(OH)(H2PO3)2, hedpH4) as a diphosphonate building block and Mg(II), Ca(II), Sr(II), or Ba(II) ions as alkaline-earth metal ion centers in water, dimethylformamide, and/or EtOH media. These diphosphonate frameworks, (H2NMe2)4[Mg(hedpH2)3]·3H2O (1), (H2NMe2)2[Ca(hedpH2)2] (2), (H2NMe2)2[Sr3(hedpH2)4(H2O)2] (3), and [Ba3(hedpH2)3]·H2O (4) exhibited interesting structural topologies (zero-, one-, two-, and three-dimensional (0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D, respectively)), which are mainly depending on the metal ions and the solvents used in the synthesis. The single-crystal analysis of these newly synthesized compounds revealed that 1 was a 0D molecule, 2 has 1D chains, 3 was a 3D molecule, and 4 has 2D layers. All compounds were further characterized using thermogravimetric analysis, solid-state (31)P NMR, powder X-ray diffraction analysis, UV-vis spectra, and infrared spectroscopy. In addition, Eu(III)- and Tb(III)-doped compounds of 1-4, namely, (H2NMe2)4[Ln(x)Mg(1-x)(hedpH2)2(hedpH(2-x))]·3H2O (1Ln), (H2NMe2)2[Ln(x)Ca(1-x)(hedpH2)(hedpH(2-x))] (2Ln), (H2NMe2)2[Ln(x)Sr(3-x)(hedpH2)3(hedpH(2-x))(H2O)2] (3Ln), and [Ln(x)Ba(3-x)(hedpH2)2(hedpH(2-x))]·H2O (4Ln) (where Ln = Eu, Tb), were synthesized, and their photoluminescence properties were studied. The quantum yield of 1Eu-4Eu was measured with reference to commercial red phosphor, Y2O2S:Eu(3+) (YE), and the quantum yield of terbium-doped compounds 1Tb-4Tb was measured with reference to commercial green-emitting phosphor CeMgAl10O17:Tb(3+). Interestingly, the compound 2Eu showed very high quantum yield of 92.2%, which is better than that of the reference commercial red phosphor, YE (90.8%).

Assembly, disassembly, and reassembly: conversion of homometallic coordination networks into mixed metal-organic frameworks

A strategy for the conversion of homometallic coordination networks into mixed metal-organic frameworks (MM'MOFs) is proposed. Ni(II) complexes of dipyrrin (dpm) ligands bearing peripheral pyridyl or imidazolyl units have been shown to self-assemble into coordination polymers with the metal cation in an octahedral environment coordinated to two bis-pyrrolic chelates and two neutral monodentate coordinating units such as pyridyl or imidazolyl moieties. Taking advantage of the chelate effect, the two monodentate units may be replaced by a diimine ligand leading to the disassembly of the networks by the formation of discrete soluble complexes. The latter can be employed as metallatectons for the construction of heterometallic architectures upon reaction with a secondary metal salt. This approach was applied using either 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpm) as chelates leading to a series of mono- and binuclear metallatectons of the (phen)Ni(dpm)2 and (bpm)[Ni(dpm)2]2 type. Subsequent assembly with CdCl2 afforded either interpenetrated 2D grid-type architectures or 3D MM'MOFs.

Diverse silver(i) sulfobenzoate coordination polymers and their recycling property as homogeneous catalyst in oxygenation of sulfide

Four silver sulfobenzoate coordination polymers with bpmb ligands were prepared. The variable positions of sulfonate groups on benzene rings gave rise to different coordination polymers and variable chemical properties.
