Complexes with redox-active ligands: synthesis, structure, and electrochemical and photophysical behavior of the Ru(II) complex with TTF-annulated phenanthroline

Binucleating Jäger-type {(N2O2)2}4- ligands: magnetic and electronic interactions of Fe(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) across an in-plane TTF-bridge

The simultaneous presence of different electrophores provides an interesting playground for responsive materials. Herein, we present the incorporation of a twice-reversibly oxidizable tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) unit into a binucleating ligand, bridging two metal centers in a fully conjugated plane. A two-step synthesis scheme gave the D2h symmetric Schiff base-like ligand H4L in moderate yields from which the corresponding copper(II) [Cu2L], nickel(II) [Ni2L], [Ni2L(py)4] and iron(II) complexes [Fe2L(py)4], [Fe2L(dmap)4] and [Fe2L(bpee)2]·1 Tol could be obtained. Characterization was performed through 1H-NMR, IR, UV-vis and 57Fe-Mössbauer spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry and cyclic voltammetry, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Single crystal X-ray analysis of [Ni2L(py)4] revealed six-coordinate paramagnetic centers, whereas [Ni2L] underwent gradual coordination induced spin state switching (CISSS) in solution. The magnetic independence of both metal centers is echoed by close-to-ideal Curie-plots of the [Cu2L] system and the gradual spin crossover of all iron(II) compounds. By contrast, cyclic voltammetry measurements in solution indicated oxidation-dependent TTF-metal interactions, as well as metal-metal interactions. The reversible TTF-borne events in H4L and [Ni2L] are overlaid with metal-borne events in the case of [Fe2L(py)4], as is corroborated by an analysis of the frontier orbital landscapes and through diagnostic spectral features upon chemical oxidation.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Properties of a Titanium(IV)-Tetrathiafulvalene-Based Complex

To deeply investigate the interaction between a tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) unit and a Ti(IV) center, a monomeric heteroleptic octahedral Ti(IV) complex containing a diimine ligand composed of a 1,10-phenanthroline core fused with a TTF fragment (ligand 2a) was prepared. The stable complex formulated as Ti(1)2(2a), where 1 is a 2,2'-biphenolato derivative, was efficiently synthesized by following a one-step approach. This complex and its model species [Ti(1)2(2b)] were fully characterized in solution, and their solid-state structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Density functional theory calculations allowed the assignment of the frontier orbitals involved in the electronic transitions characterized by ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies revealed that the TTF unit within Ti(1)2(2a) can undergo two reversible one-electron oxidation processes; a reversible one-electron reduction of the Ti(IV) atom was highlighted. The photophysical measurements performed for this donor-acceptor molecular system indicated that an electron transfer process upon light excitation occurred within Ti(1)2(2a).

Aqua-bis-(2,2'-bi-pyridine-κ2N,N')(isonicotinamide-κN)ruthenium(II) bis-(trifluoromethanesulfonate)

In the title complex, [Ru(C10H8N2)2(C6H6N2O)(H2O)](CF3SO3)2, the central RuII atom is sixfold coordinated by two bidentate 2,2'-bi-pyridine, an isonic-otinamide ligand, and a water mol-ecule in a distorted octa-hedral environment with tri-fluoro-methane-sulfonate ions completing the outer coordination sphere of the complex. Hydrogen bonding involving the water mol-ecule and weak π-π stacking inter-actions between the pyridyl rings in adjacent mol-ecules contribute to the alignment of the complexes in columns parallel to the c axis.

Sulfinyl-aminotroponiminates: alkali- (Li, Na, K) and heavy-metal (Bi) complexes

The installation of electron-withdrawing functional groups at the carbocyclic backbone of aminotroponiminate (ATI) ligands is a versatile method for influencing the electronic properties of the resulting ATI complexes. We report here Li, Na, and K salts of an ATI ligand with a phenylsulfinyl substituent in the backbone. It is demonstrated that the sulfinyl group actively contributes to the coordination chemistry of these complexes, effectively competing with neutral donor ligands such as thf or pyridine in the solid state (XRD), in solution (DOSY NMR spectroscopy), and in the gas phase (DFT). The impact of the phenylsulfinyl group on the redox properties of the complexes have been investigated and access to sodium sodiate species through ligand-induced disproportionation has been studied. Transfer of the ATI ligand to the heavy p-block element bismuth has been demonstrated. Analytical techniques applied in this work include multinuclear and DOSY NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, DFT calculations, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Chiral or Luminescent Lanthanide Single-Molecule Magnets Involving Bridging Redox Active Triad Ligand

The reactions between the bis(1,10-phenantro[5,6-b])tetrathiafulvalene triad (L) and the metallo-precursors Yb(hfac)3(H2O)2 (hfac− = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonato anion) and Dy(facam)3 (facam− = 3-trifluoro-acetyl-(+)-camphorato anion) lead to the formation of two dinuclear complexes of formula [Yb2(hfac)6(L)]·2(C7H16) ((1)·2(C7H16)) and [Dy2((+)facam)6(L)]·2(C6H14) ((2)·2(C6H14)). The X-ray structures reveal that the L triad bridges two terminal Yb(hfac)3 or Dy(facam)3 units. (1)·2(C7H16) behaved as a near infrared YbIII centered emitter and a field-induced Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) while (2)·2(C6H14) displayed SMM behavior in both zero- and in-dc field. The magnetization mainly relaxes through a Raman process for both complexes under an optimal applied magnetic field.

Ionic Charge-Transfer Liquid Crystals Formed by Alternating Supramolecular Copolymerization of Liquid π-Donors and TCNQ

A new family of liquid π-donors, lipophilic dihydrophenazine (DHP) derivatives, show remarkably high π-electron-donor property which exhibit supramolecular alternating copolymerization with 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), giving ionic charge-transfer (ICT) complexes. The ICT complexes form distinct columnar liquid crystalline (LC) mesophases with well-defined alternating molecular alignment as demonstrated by UV-Vis-NIR spectra, IR spectra, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. These liquid crystalline ICT complexes display unique phase transitions in response to mechanical stress: the columnar ICT phase is converted to macroscopically oriented smectic-like mesophases upon applying shear force. Although there exist reports on the formation of ICT in the crystalline state, this study provides the first rational identification of ICT mesophases based on the spectroscopic and structural data. The liquid crystalline ICT phases are generated by strong electronic interactions between the liquid π-donors and solid acceptors. It clearly shows the significance of simultaneous fulfillment of strong π-donating ability and ordered self-assembly of the stable ICT pairs. The flexible, stimuli-responsive structural transformation of the ICT complexes offer a new perspective for designing processable CT systems with controlled hierarchical self-assembly and electronic structures.

Bis[pyrrolyl Ru(ii)] triads: a new class of photosensitizers for metal-organic photodynamic therapy

A new family of ten dinuclear Ru(ii) complexes based on the bis[pyrrolyl Ru(ii)] triad scaffold, where two Ru(bpy)₂ centers are separated by a variety of organic linkers, was prepared to evaluate the influence of the organic chromophore on the spectroscopic and in vitro photodynamic therapy (PDT) properties of the compounds. The bis[pyrrolyl Ru(ii)] triads absorbed strongly throughout the visible region, with several members having molar extinction coefficients (ε) ≥ 10⁴ at 600-620 nm and longer. Phosphorescence quantum yields (Φ _p) were generally less than 0.1% and in some cases undetectable. The singlet oxygen quantum yields (Φ _Δ) ranged from 5% to 77% and generally correlated with their photocytotoxicities toward human leukemia (HL-60) cells regardless of the wavelength of light used. Dark cytotoxicities varied ten-fold, with EC₅₀ values in the range of 10-100 μM and phototherapeutic indices (PIs) as large as 5400 and 260 with broadband visible (28 J cm^-2, 7.8 mW cm^-2) and 625 nm red (100 J cm^-2, 42 mW cm^-2) light, respectively. The bis[pyrrolyl Ru(ii)] triad with a pyrenyl linker (5h) was especially potent, with an EC₅₀ value of 1 nM and PI > 27 000 with visible light and subnanomolar activity with 625 nm light (100 J cm^-2, 28 mW cm^-2). The lead compound 5h was also tested in a tumor spheroid assay using the HL60 cell line and exhibited greater photocytotoxicity in this more resistant model (EC₅₀ = 60 nM and PI > 1200 with 625 nm light) despite a lower dark cytotoxicity. The in vitro PDT effects of 5h extended to bacteria, where submicromolar EC₅₀ values and PIs >300 against S. mutans and S. aureus were obtained with visible light. This activity was attenuated with 625 nm red light, but PIs were still near 50. The ligand-localized ³ππ* state contributed by the pyrenyl linker of 5h likely plays a key role in its phototoxic effects toward cancer cells and bacteria.

Field-Induced Dysprosium Single-Molecule Magnet Based on a Redox-Active Fused 1,10-Phenanthroline-Tetrathiafulvalene-1,10-Phenanthroline Bridging Triad

Tetrathiafulvalene and 1,10-phenanthroline moieties present, respectively remarkable redox-active and complexation activities. In this work, we investigated the coordination reaction between the bis(1,10-phenanthro[5,6-b])tetrathiafulvalene triad (L) and the Dy(hfac)₃·2H₂O metallo precursor. The resulting {[Dy₂(hfac)₆(L)]·CH₂Cl₂·C₆H₁₄}₃ (1) dinuclear complex showed a crystal structure in which the triad L bridged two terminal Dy(hfac)₃ units and the supramolecular co-planar arrangement of the triads is driven by donor-acceptor interactions. The frequency dependence of the out-of-phase component of the magnetic susceptibility highlights three distinct maxima under a 2000 Oe static applied magnetic field, a sign that 1 displays a Single-Molecule Magnet (SMM) behavior with multiple magnetic relaxations. Ab initio calculations rationalized the Ising character of the magnetic anisotropy of the Dy^III ions and showed that the main anisotropy axes are perpendicular to the co-planar arrangement of the triads. Single-crystal rotating magnetometry confirms the orientation of the main magnetic axis. Finally combining structural analysis and probability of magnetic relaxation pathways through Quantum Tunneling of the Magnetization (QTM) vs. excited states (Orbach), each Dy^III center has been attributed to one of the three observed magnetic relaxation times. Such coordination compound can be considered as an ideal candidate to perform redox-magnetic switching.

Ultrafast Energy Transfer in Dinuclear Complexes with Bridging 1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-Dithiolate

We report herein the preparation and characterization of dinuclear complexes with the bridging ligand 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dithiolate (phendt^2-) bearing Ru(bpy)₂ or Ir(ppy)₂ at the diimine moiety and Ni(dppe), Ni(dppf), CoCp, RhCp*, and Ru( p-Me-ⁱPr-benzene) at the dithiolate unit. In comparison with the mononuclear precursors used in the synthesis, all dinuclear complexes were characterized by absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy as well as cyclic voltammetry. Because of the beneficial spectral and electrochemical properties of the Ir/Co complex for a light-driven charge separation, this complex was investigated in detail by time-resolved luminescence {nanosecond (ns)-resolution} and transient absorption spectroscopy {femtosecond (fs)-resolution}. All measurements supported by DFT calculations show that the observed effective luminescence quenching by the dithiolate coordinated metal is caused by an ultrafast singlet-singlet Dexter energy transfer.

1,10-Phenanthroline-dithiine iridium and ruthenium complexes: synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic dihydrogen evolution

Extending 1,10-phenanthroline with a dithiine link led to a remarkable increase of the luminescence lifetimes of the respective Ir(ppy)₂ and Ru(bpy)₂ complexes.

Synthesis, properties and surface self-assembly of a pentanuclear cluster based on the new π-conjugated TTF-triazole ligand

The new π-extended redox-active ligand with both TTF and triazole units, 6-(4,5-bis(propylthio)-1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-1H-[1,3]dithiolo[4′,5′:4,5]benzo [1,2-d] [1–3]triazole, has been successfully prepared. Based on the versatile ligand and Cu(tta)₂ precursors (tta⁻ = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(thiophen-2-yl)butane-1,3-dione), a TTF-based pentanuclear Cu^II cluster (Cu₅(tta)₄(TTFN₃)₆) is synthesized and structurally characterized. Their absorption and electrochemical properties are investigated. Antiferromagnetic couplings are operative between metal ion centers bridged by triazoles in the complex. The self-assembled structure of the cluster complex on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface was observed using scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to provide insight into the formation mechanism. The introduction of the redox-active TTF unit into the cluster complexes with interesting magnetic properties renders them promising candidates for new multifunctional materials.

Dinuclear Ruthenium Complex Based on a π-Extended Bridging Ligand with Redox-Active Tetrathiafulvalene and 1,10-Phenanthroline Units

The synthesis of a π-extended bridging ligand with both redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) units, namely, bis(1,10-phenanthro[5,6-b])tetrathiafulvalene (BPTTF), was realized via a self-coupling reaction. Using this ligand and Ru(tbbpy)2Cl2 (tbbpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine), the dinuclear ruthenium(II) compound [{Ru(tbbpy)2}2(BPTTF)](PF6)4 (1) has been obtained by microwave-assisted synthesis. Structural characterization of 1 revealed a crossed arrangement of the TTF moieties on adjacent dimers within the crystal structure. The optical and redox properties of 1 were investigated using electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and absorption spectroscopic studies combined with theoretical calculations. One exhibits a rich electrochemical behavior owing to the multiple redox-active centers. Interestingly, both the ligand BPTTF and the ruthenium compound 1 are EPR-active in the solid state owing to intramolecular charge-transfer processes. The results demonstrate that the TTF-annulated bis(phen) ligand is a promising bridging ligand to construct oligomeric or polymeric metal complexes with multiple redox-active centers.

Efficient Light-Driven Oxidation of Alcohols Using an Organic Chromophore-Catalyst Assembly Anchored to TiO2

The ligand 5-PO3H2-2,2':5',2″-terthiophene-5-trpy, T3 (trpy = 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine), was prepared and studied in aqueous solutions along with its metal complex assembly [Ru(T3)(bpy)(OH2)](2+) (T3-Ru-OH2, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). T3 contains a phosphonic acid group for anchoring to a TiO2 photoanode under aqueous conditions, a terthiophene fragment for light absorption and electron injection into TiO2, and a terminal trpy ligand for the construction of assemblies comprising a molecular oxidation catalyst. At a TiO2 photoanode, T3 displays efficient injection at pH 4.35 as evidenced by the high photocurrents (∼350 uA/cm(2)) arising from hydroquinone oxidation. Addition of [Ru(bpy)(OTf)][OTf]2 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, OTf(-) = triflate) to T3 at the free trpy ligand forms the molecular assembly, T3-Ru-OH2, with the oxidative catalyst fragment: [Ru(trpy)(bpy)(OH2)](2+). The new assembly, T3-Ru-OH2, was used to perform efficient light-driven oxidation of phenol (230 μA/cm(2)) and benzyl alcohol (25 μA/cm(2)) in a dye-sensitized photoelectrosynthesis cell.

Self-enhanced electrogenerated chemiluminescence of ruthenium(ii) complexes conjugated with Schiff bases

Self-enhanced electrochemiluminescence based on ruthenium complexes conjugated with Schiff bases is studied and used for co-reactant free metal anion recognition.

Ruthenium-nitrosyl complexes with glycine, L-alanine, L-valine, L-proline, D-proline, L-serine, L-threonine, and L-tyrosine: synthesis, X-ray diffraction structures, spectroscopic and electrochemical properties, and antiproliferative activity

The reactions of [Ru(NO)Cl5](2-) with glycine (Gly), L-alanine (L-Ala), L-valine (L-Val), L-proline (L-Pro), D-proline (D-Pro), L-serine (L-Ser), L-threonine (L-Thr), and L-tyrosine (L-Tyr) in n-butanol or n-propanol afforded eight new complexes (1-8) of the general formula [RuCl3(AA-H)(NO)](-), where AA = Gly, L-Ala, L-Val, L-Pro, D-Pro, L-Ser, L-Thr, and L-Tyr, respectively. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), (1)H NMR, UV-visible and ATR IR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and X-ray crystallography. X-ray crystallography studies have revealed that in all cases the same isomer type (from three theoretically possible) was isolated, namely mer(Cl),trans(NO,O)-[RuCl3(AA-H)(NO)], as was also recently reported for osmium analogues with Gly, L-Pro, and D-Pro (see Z. Anorg. Allg. Chem. 2013, 639, 1590-1597). Compounds 1, 4, 5, and 8 were investigated by ESI-MS with regard to their stability in aqueous solution and reactivity toward sodium ascorbate. In addition, cell culture experiments in three human cancer cell lines, namely, A549 (nonsmall cell lung carcinoma), CH1 (ovarian carcinoma), and SW480 (colon carcinoma), were performed, and the results are discussed in conjunction with the lipophilicity of compounds.
