Abstract
Crystalline borates have received great attention due to their various structures and wide applications. For a long time, the corner-sharing B-O unit is considered a basic rule in borate structural chemistry. The Dy4B6O15 synthesized under high-pressure is the first oxoborate with edge-sharing [BO4] tetrahedra, while the KZnB3O6 is the first ambient pressure borate with the edge-sharing [BO4] tetrahedra. The edge-sharing connection modes greatly enrich the structural chemistry of borates and are expected to expand new applications in the future. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in crystalline borates with edge-sharing [BO4] tetrahedra. We discuss the synthesis, fundamental building blocks, structural features, and possible applications of these edge-sharing borates. Finally, we also discuss the future perspectives in this field.

Abstract
Two acentric aluminoborates (ABOs), [Zn(en)2Al{B5O9(OH)}{BO(OH)2}] (1) and [Cd(en)2AlB5O10]·H2O (2) (en = ethylenediamine), have been solvothermally made. 1 includes a two-dimensional (2D) wavy ABO layer using B5O9(OH) clusters and AlO3{BO(OH)2} groups, in which both units can be regarded as three-connected nodes, and simplifying the ABO layer to a hcb-type network. 2 features an acentric three-dimensional (3D) porous framework with a unique unc-type network constituted by strictly alternating connected B5O10 clusters and AlO4 units. The structural transformation from a 2D layer 1 to a 3D framework 2 was achieved with the elimination of the terminal hydroxyls in layer 1 by adjusting synthetic conditions in the same solvent system. Metal-amine complexes Zn(en)2/Cd(en)2 bond to the inorganic walls and are located in the cavity of frameworks 1 and 2, respectively. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit large second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses that are 2.2 and 2.7 times those of KH2PO4 (KDP), respectively, which are among the largest powder SHG responses for all deep-ultraviolet (deep-UV) ABOs. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra of 1 and 2 show a wide transparency window below 190 nm. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the B-O units and the introduced distorted d10 metal polyhedra played a decisive role in the optical properties of both compounds.

Abstract
Two mixed alkali-metal borates, K0.5Li[B6O10]·0.5H3O (1) and [(μ5-OH)@(Na4Li)]0.5[B6O10]·0.5B(OH)3 (2), have been prepared under solvothermal conditions. Both of them are obtained in the same synthetic system and contain a B6O138- cluster as the structural-building unit (SBU) but exhibit quite different structural features. 1 is a centric three-dimensional (3D) oxoboron (B-O) framework, where templated mixed K+ and Li+ cations occupied the cavities of the structure. 2 crystallizes in an acentric space group under the templating effect of a unique acentric alkali-metal cluster [(μ5-OH)@(Na4Li)]4+. The SBU of 2 is also the B6O138- cluster, which acts as six-connected nodes linked together to form a 3D B-O framework, showing different characters from 1 because of two types of templates; the acentric [(μ5-OH)@(Na4Li)]4+ clusters and the electroneutral B (OH)3 groups fill in two different cages in the framework and further connect each other via Na-O-B bonds to build a novel two-dimensional (2D) wavy bricklike network, resulting in a 3D B-O framework interpenetrated by a 2D [(μ5-OH)@(Na4Li)]-B(OH)3 network. As a crystal material with an acentric space group, 2 shows a good second harmonic generation response of about 2.8 times that of KDP (KH2PO4) and has a cutoff edge below 190 nm, which suggests that 2 is a potential deep-UV NLO material.

Abstract
Three inorganic-organic hybrid gallo-/alumino-borates [Ga2B7O14(OH)]·H2dah (1, dah = 1,6-diaminohexane), K2[Ga2B7O14(OH)(en)0.5] (2, en = ethylenediamine), and K2[Al2B7O14(OH)(en)0.5]·H2O (3) were synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 features a 3D porous-layered structure built by the alternation of [GaB4O10(OH)]6-, [B3O6]3- clusters and GaO4 tetrahedra, in which the novel [GaB4O10(OH)]6- cluster is first observed. Compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural and made by [MB4O10(OH)]6-, [B3O6(en)0.5]3- clusters and MO4 tetrahedra (M = Ga/Al); their 3D porous layers are similar to those of 1 and further bridged by en linkers through the rare B-N-C covalent bonds, resulting in the 3D inorganic-organic hybrid framework. This is the first main-group metal borate with organic molecules participating in the oxoboron frameworks through B-N bonds. Optical diffuse-reflectance spectra reveal that 1, 2, and 3 are potential wide-band-gap semiconductors.

Abstract
In this work, different synthetic methods were used to prepare metal borates. One cadmium borate Cd3[B6O9(OH)2]2·2NO3·4H2O (1) and two nickel borate Ni0.8Mn0.2{B6O7(OH)3[O(CH2)2NH2]3} (2), [Ni(1-MI)6]·[B5O6(OH)4]2·2DMF (3, 1-MI = 1-methylimidazole, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) species were successfully prepared. The structures of these three compounds were confirmed via single crystal powder X-ray diffraction (SCPXRD), elemental analysis, FTIR, PXRD, and ICP studies. Compound 1 was prepared via molten salt synthesis, and compounds 2 and 3 were prepared via precursor synthesis, which is a synthetic method that uses a certain polyanionic cluster as a reagent. Compound 1 shows a novel three-dimensional (3D) structure, in which the [B6O11(OH)2] units acting as the basic polyanionic cluster form a two-dimensional (2D) anionic structure. In addition, the unexpected Cd3O14 clusters are connected with the 2D structures, leading to the 3D structure. The crystal structure of 2 is packed with very large neutral Ni0.8Mn0.2{B6O7(OH)3[O(CH2)2NH2]3} oxo-metal-boron clusters. The crystal structure of 3 consists of a [B5O6(OH)4]- cluster, a DMF molecule, and a [Ni(1-MI)6]2+ complex. In particular, 2 was successfully constructed using the same hexaborate cluster as its precursor. However, 3 only contains Ni2+ cations when a neutral NixMn1-x[B6O7(OH)6] cluster was used as an initial reagent, and it shows an ability to select a certain metal cation during the self-assembly process. Moreover, compounds 1, 2, and 3 exhibit different wide band gaps of 3.06 eV (1), 3.95 eV (2), and 4.24 eV (3).

Abstract
Three inorganic-organic hybrid borates, M(1,4-dab)[B5O7(OH)3] [M = Zn (1), Cd (2), 1,4-dab = 1,4-diaminobutane)] and Co(1,3-dap)[B4O7] (3, 1,3-dap = 1,3-diaminopropane), which integrated characteristics of 1D coordination polymers and 1D/3D inorganic boron oxides have been obtained under solvothermal conditions. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and crystallize in a centrosymmetric space group P21/c; the 3D achiral structures of 1 and 2 consist of the nonhelical Zn/Cd-1,4-dap coordination polymers and 1D B-O chains. Compound 3 crystallizes in a chiral space group P43212; the helical Co-1,3-dap coordination polymer chains are entrained within a 3D B-O network and finally form the chiral framework. Compounds 1-3 represent good examples of using coordination polymers to construct mixed-motif inorganic-organic hybrid borates. Compounds 1 and 2 display blue luminescence when excited with UV light.

Abstract
Abstract
A new centrosymmetric modification of the lead borate (Pb4O)Pb2B6O14 has been obtained as a side phase through a facile hydrothermal reaction from Pb(BO2)2·H2O, H2O, and KOH as starting materials. The compound (Pb4O)Pb2B6O14-II crystallizes in the space group P1̅ (no. 2) with the lattice parameters a=695.9(3), b=778.0(3), c=1408.3(3) pm, α=97.35(1)°, β=100.39(1)°, and γ=103.02(1)°. The structure consists of anti-parallel arranged B6O14 chains and isolated oxygen-centered OPb4 tetrahedra. The compound Pb6B12O21(OH)6 constitutes the major phase of the synthesis, as verified through a Rietveld analysis. The characterization of (Pb4O)Pb2B6O14-II is based on a Rietveld analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, and FT-IR spectroscopy.

Abstract
The first examples of mixed-anion lanthanide galloborates, namely, Ln2Ga[B3O6(OH)]2[B7O9(OH)2](CH3CO2)2 [Ln = Y (1), Sm (2), Eu (3), Gd (4), Dy (5)], have been obtained through hydrothermal synthesis. The title compounds are isomorphic and belong to monoclinic space group C2/c (No. 15). Their structures possess [B7O13(OH)2] borate layers further bridged with [B3O7] clusters to give a three-dimensional (3D) borate framework displaying two types of rhombus-like B14O14 14-membered-ring (14-MR) channels along the b axis. The Ga(3+) ions are octahedrally coordinated and located at one end of the B14O14 14-MR channels, forming small tunnels of B7Ga 8-MRs, which are filled by the Ln(III) ions. The Ln ions and Ga cations are further held together by bridging acetate anions. It is worth noting that in these compounds there are two different types of borate clusters and two types of anions that are uncommon in the borates reported. Luminescent studies revealed the characteristic emission bands of Ln ions for compounds 2-5, and the luminescent lifetimes are 3.6, 0.86, and 3.05 ns for compounds 2, 3, and 5, respectively. Magnetic measurements suggest that there are antiferromagnetic interactions between magnetic centers for compounds 2-5.

A layered borate Na2B10O17·H2en (1, en = ethylenediamine) with three-dimensional microporosity within the layers has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions by using organic amines and inorganic cations as the templates. Its framework displays a unique 5-connected net constructed by B5O11 cluster and emits blue luminescence.
