Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization of an MnIII Single Ion

Thermal Jahn-Teller Distortion Changes and Slow Relaxation of Magnetization in Mn(III) Schiff Base Complexes

The impact that the anion and alkyl group has on the electronic structures and magnetic properties of four mononuclear Mn(III) complexes is explored in [Mn(salEen-Br)2]Y (salEen-Br = 2-{[2-(ethylamino)ethylimino]methyl}-4-Br-phenol; Y = ClO4- 1 and BF4-·1/3CH2Cl2 2) and [Mn(salBzen-Br)2]Y (salBzen-Br = 2-{[2-(benzylamino)ethylimino]methyl}-4-Br-phenol; Y = ClO4- 3 and BF4- 4). X-ray structures of [Mn(salEen-Br)2]ClO4·0.45C6H14 1-hexane, [Mn(salEen-Br)2]BF4·0.33CH2Cl2·0.15C6H14 2-dcm-hexane, and 3-4 reveal that they crystallize in ambient conditions in the monoclinic P21/c space group. Lowering the temperature, 2-dcm-hexane uniquely exhibits a structural phase transition toward a monoclinic P21/n crystal structure determined at 100 K with the unit cell trebling in size. Remarkably, at room temperature, the axially elongated Jahn-Teller axis in 2-dcm-hexane is poorly defined but becomes clearer at low temperature after the phase transition. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1-4 reveal that only 3 and 4 show slow relaxation of magnetization with Δeff/kB = 27.9 and 20.7 K, implying that the benzyl group is important for observing single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the alkyl group subtly influences the orbital levels and therefore very likely the observed SMM properties.

Spin canting and slow magnetic relaxation in mononuclear cobalt(II) sulfadiazine ternary complexes

Monomeric [Co(SDZ)2phen] (1) and [Co(SDZ)(bq)Cl] (2) complexes (SDZ = sulfadiazine, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, and bq = 2,2'-biquinoline) have been synthesized and characterized. X-ray diffraction studies indicate that SDZ acts as a bidentate ligand coordinating through the sulfonamide and the pyrimidine N atoms in both compounds. In complex 1, the coordination sphere consists of two SDZ ligands and a bis-chelating phen ligand, giving rise to a CoN6 coordination sphere. On the other hand, 2 has a CoN4Cl core, with two N-atoms from SDZ and two from the bq ligand. Both compounds have been studied by dc and ac magnetometry and shown to display slow magnetic relaxation under an optimum external dc field (1 kOe) at low temperatures. Moreover, compound 2 displays long range magnetic ordering provided by spin-canted antiferromagnetism, which has been characterized by further field-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements, FC/ZFC curves, hysteresis loops and frequency-independent ac curves. The signs of the calculated D parameters, positive in 1 and negative in 2, have been rationalized according to the two lowest-lying transitions in the orbital energy diagrams derived from ab initio ligand field theory (AILFT). In a subsequent attempt to reveal the possible hidden zero-field SMM behaviour, Ni(II)-based 3 and Co(II)-doped Ni(II)-based (with a Ni : Co ratio of 0.9 : 0.1) heterometallic compound 2Ni were synthesized.

Slow magnetic relaxation in 8-coordinate Mn(II) compounds

The design and synthesis of high-spin Mn(II)-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have not been well developed to a great extent, as compared with a large number of SMMs based on the other first row transition metal complexes. In light of our success in designing Fe(II), Co(II) and Fe(III)-based SMMs with a high coordination number of 8, it is of great interest to design Mn(II) analogues with such a strategy. In this contribution, four Mn(II) compounds, [MnII(Ln)2](ClO4)2 (1-4) were obtained from reactions of neutral tetradentate ligands, L1-L4, with hydrated MnII(ClO4)2 (L1 = 2,9-bis(carbomethoxy)-1,10-phenanthroline, L2 = 2,9-bis(carbomethoxy)-2,2'-dipyridine, L3 = N2,N9-dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide, L4 = 6,6'-bis(2-(tert-butyl)-2H-tetrazol-5-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine). Their crystal structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography and it clearly shows that the Mn(II) centers in these compounds have an oversaturated coordination number of 8. Their magnetic properties have been investigated in detail; to our surprise, all of these Mn(II) compounds show interesting slow magnetic relaxation behaviors under an applied direct current field, although they have very small negative D values.

Slow magnetic relaxation in mononuclear octa-coordinate Fe(II) and Co(II) complexes from a Bpybox ligand

Two 3d transition metal mononuclear complexes, [(FeL₂)(ClO₄)₂]₂·CH₃CN (1) and (CoL₂)(ClO₄)₂·2CH₃CN (2), have been prepared from a rigid tetradentate bpybox (L = 6,6'-bis(2,5-dihydrooxazol-4-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine) ligand. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses together with the help of calculations show that both compounds are octa-coordinate. Direct current magnetic studies reveal their significant magnetic anisotropy. Impressively, field-induced relaxation of magnetism is observed in the two complexes and the apparent anisotropy barriers are 14.1 K for 1 and 21.6 K for 2, respectively. Theoretical calculations reveal that two Fe(II) centers in 1 have small negative D values of -4.897 and -4.825 cm^-1 and relatively small E values of 0.646 and 0.830 cm^-1, indicating a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. In contrast, the D and E values in the Co(II) center of 2 are 46.42 cm^-1 and 11.51 cm^-1, featuring a rhombic anisotropy. This work demonstrates that field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in 3d transition metal complexes with high coordination numbers can be manipulated through rigid ligand design.

Slow magnetic relaxation in high-coordinate Co(II) and Fe(II) compounds bearing neutral tetradentate ligands

The first-row transition metal compounds, [M^II(L1)₂](ClO₄)₂ (M = Ni (1); Co (2)), have been prepared by treatment of a neutral tetradentate ligand (L1 = N²,N⁹-dibutyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxamide) with metal perchlorate salts in MeOH. Both compounds have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography and it was found that the coordination numbers are 6 and 7, respectively. The reaction of 6,6'-bis(2-^tbutyl-tetrazol-5-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (L2) with hydrated Fe^II(ClO₄)₂ afforded a 8-coordinate Fe(II) compound, [Fe^II(L2)₂](ClO₄)₂ (3); however its reaction with hydrated Co^II(ClO₄)₂ resulted in 6-coordinate [Co^II(L2)₂](ClO₄)₂. It is interesting to observe field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in the 7-coordinate Co(II) compound 2 and 8-coordinate Fe(II) compound 3, which further supports the validity of designing high coordination number compounds as single-molecule magnets. Direct current magnetic studies demonstrate that 2 has a very large positive D value (56.2 cm^-1) and a small E value (0.66 cm^-1), indicating easy plane magnetic anisotropy. Consistent with the larger D value, an effective spin-reversal barrier of U_eff = 100 K (71.4 cm^-1) is obtained, which is the highest value reported for 7-coordinate Co(II) complexes with a pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. In contrast, 8-coordinate Fe(II) compound 3 exhibits uniaxial magnetic anisotropy.

Record High Magnetic Anisotropy in Three-Coordinate MnIII and CrII Complexes: A Theoretical Perspective

Ab initio calculations performed in two three-coordinate complexes [Mn{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃] (1) and [K(18-crown-6) (Et₂O)₂][Cr{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃] (2) reveal record-high magnetic anisotropy with the D values -64 and -15 cm^-1, respectively, enlisting d⁴ ions back in the race for single-ion magnets. A detailed spin-vibrational analysis performed of 1 and 2 suggests dominance under barrier relaxation due to the flexible coordination spheres around the metal ion. Furthermore, several in silico models were constructed by varying the nature of donor atoms based on the X-ray structure of 1 and 2, unveiling much larger anisotropy and robust single-ion magnet (SIM) characteristics for some of the models offering design clues for low-coordinate transition-metal SIMs.

Enhancement of the coordinating flexibility in a Schiff–Mannich combo ligand: forced generation of a new NiII–Ophenoxo–LnIII–Oalkoxo–LnIII array (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho)

A series of 3d–4f complexes, containing rare NiLn₂O₄ topology, were synthesized by designing a new type of combo Schiff base–Mannich ligand.

Zero-field slow relaxation of magnetization in cobalt(ii) single-ion magnets: suppression of quantum tunneling of magnetization by tailoring the intermolecular magnetic coupling

The correlation between magnetic relaxation dynamics and the alignment of single-ion magnets (SIMs) in a crystal was investigated using four analogous cobalt(ii) complexes with unique hydrogen-bond networks. The hydrogen-bonding interactions in the crystals resulted in a relatively short intermolecular Co⋯Co distance, which led to non-zero intermolecular magnetic coupling. All the complexes with a Co⋯Co distance shorter than 6.5 Å exhibited zero-field slow magnetic relaxation as weak magnetic interactions split the ground ±Ms levels and suppressed quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM). In particular, antiferromagnetically coupled one-dimensional chain SIM networks effectively suppressed QTM when the two intrachain Co⋯Co distances were non-equivalent. However, when the two distances in a chain were equivalent and each molecular symmetry axis aligned parallell within the chain, QTM suppression was insufficient because magnetic coupling from the adjacent molecules was virtually cancelled. Partial substitution of the CoII ion with the diamagnetic ZnII ion up to 33% for this complex resulted in complete QTM suppression in the absence of an external field. These results show that the manipulation of intermolecular distances and alignments is effective for suppressing undesired QTM events in SIMs.

Magnetic Properties and Electronic Structure of the S = 2 Complex [MnIII{(OPPh2)2N}3] Showing Field-Induced Slow Magnetization Relaxation

The high-spin S = 2 Mn(III) complex [Mn{(OPPh₂)₂N}₃] (1_Mn) exhibits field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization (Inorg. Chem. 2013, 52, 12869). Magnetic susceptibility and dual-mode X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies revealed a negative value of the zero-field-splitting (zfs) parameter D. In order to explore the magnetic and electronic properties of 1_Mn in detail, a combination of experimental and computational studies is presented herein. Alternating-current magnetometry on magnetically diluted samples (1_Mn/1_Ga) of 1_Mn in the diamagnetic gallium analogue, [Ga{(OPPh₂)₂N}₃], indicates that the slow relaxation behavior of 1_Mn is due to the intrinsic properties of the individual molecules of 1_Mn. Investigation of the single-crystal magnetization of both 1_Mn and 1_Mn/1_Ga by a micro-SQUID device reveals hysteresis loops below 1 K. Closed hysteresis loops at a zero direct-current magnetic field are observed and attributed to fast quantum tunneling of magnetization. High-frequency and -field EPR (HFEPR) spectroscopic studies reveal that, apart from the second-order zfs terms (D and E), fourth-order terms (B₄^m) are required in order to appropriately describe the magnetic properties of 1_Mn. These studies provide accurate spin-Hamiltonian (sH) parameters of 1_Mn, i.e., zfs parameters |D| = 3.917(5) cm^-1, |E| = 0.018(4) cm^-1, B⁰₄ = B₄² = 0, and B₄⁴ = (3.6 ± 1.7) × 10^-3 cm^-1 and g = [1.994(5), 1.996(4), 1.985(4)], and confirm the negative sign of D. Parallel-mode X-band EPR studies on 1_Mn/1_Ga and CH₂Cl₂ solutions of 1_Mn probe the electronic-nuclear hyperfine interactions in the solid state and solution. The electronic structure of 1_Mn is investigated by quantum-chemical calculations by employing recently developed computational protocols that are grounded on ab initio wave function theory. From computational analysis, the contributions of spin-spin and spin-orbit coupling to the magnitude of D are obtained. The calculations provide also computed values of the fourth-order zfs terms B₄^m, as well as those of the g and hyperfine interaction tensor components. In all cases, a very good agreement between the computed and experimentally determined sH parameters is observed. The magnetization relaxation properties of 1_Mn are rationalized on the basis of the composition of the ground-state wave functions in the absence or presence of an external magnetic field.

Field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in mixed valence di- and tri-nuclear CoII-CoIII complexes

Two novel mixed valence Co^II-Co^III complexes, namely [Co^IICo^III(L1)(ab)(mb)₂(H₂O)]·dmf (1) and [CoCo^II(L2)₄(H₂O)₄]·2H₂O (2) [H₂L1 = (E)-2-((1-hydroxybutan-2-ylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol, ab = 2-amino-butan-1-ol anion, mb = p-methyl benzoate, H₂L2 = 3-((2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzylidene)-amino)-propionic acid, and dmf = N,N-dimethyl-formamide], were synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic studies at low temperature. The structure determination reveals that both complexes belong to the monoclinic system with P21/c (1) and I2/a (2) space groups. Complex 1 is a dinuclear Co^IIICo^II compound with distorted octahedral cobalt centers showing different coordination environments. In 2, a bent trinuclear CoCo^II complex, the coordination environments around the two terminal Co^III sites are alike, whereas they are different in the central Co^II ion. Alternating current/direct current (ac/dc) magnetic studies revealed that both complexes show field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. The dc magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data were analyzed with the following Hamiltonianwhere D and E are the axial and rhombic zero-field splitting (zfs) parameters, respectively, and a good agreement between experimental and simulated results was found using the parameters g_⊥ = 2.585, g_∥ = 2.437, D = +98.1 cm^-1, E/D = 0.008 and F = 8.2× 10^-5 for 1 and g_⊥ = 2.580, g_∥ = 2.580, D = +55.4 cm^-1, and E/D = 0.000 for 2.

Slow magnetic relaxation in O–Se–O bridged manganese(iii) Schiff base complexes

Two new chain complexes consisting of a Mn(salen) building block bridged by O–Se–O units, [Mn₂(salen)₂(L)](ClO₄) (1) and {[Mn(salen)]₂(L)₂}·Y (2) (salen = N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-ethylenediamine, L = 3,4,5-trifluorobenzeneseleninic acid, Y = salicylaldehyde) have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically.

A capped trigonal prismatic cobalt(ii) complex as a structural archetype for single-ion magnets

Mononuclear, seven-coordinate complex [Co^II(BPA-TPA)](BF₄)₂ (BPA-TPA = pentapyidyldiamine) display field-induce slow magnetic relaxation, thereby presenting the first report of SIMs based on 3d metal ions with a capped trigonal prismatic geometry.

Structure, magnetic anisotropy and relaxation behavior of seven-coordinate Co(ii) single-ion magnets perturbed by counter-anions

A series of mononuclear seven-coordinate complexes with the same coordination unit [Co(BPA-TPA)]²⁺ (BPA-TPA = pentapyidyldiamine) display the different slow magnetic relaxation processes perturbed by the variation of the counter anions.

Dual switchable molecular tweezers incorporating anisotropic MnIII-salphen complexes

An alternative strategy for the synthesis of terpyridine based switchable molecular tweezers has been developed to incorporate anisotropic Mn(iii)-salphen complexes. The free ligand was synthesized using a building block strategy based on Sonogashira coupling reactions and was then selectively metalated with manganese in a last step. The conformation of the tweezers was switched from an open 'W' shaped form to a closed 'U' form by Zn(ii) coordination to the terpyridine unit bringing the two Mn-salphen moieties in close spatial proximity as confirmed by X-ray crystallography. An alternate switching mechanism was observed by the intercalation of a bridging cyanide ligand between the two Mn-salphen moieties that resulted in the closing of the tweezers. These dual stimuli are attractive for achieving multiple controls of the mechanical motion of the tweezers. A crystallographic structure of unexpected partially oxidized closed tweezers was also obtained. One of the two Mn-salphen moieties underwent a ligand-centered oxidation of an imino to an amido group allowing an intramolecular Mn-Oamide-Mn linkage. The magnetic properties of the manganese(iii) dimers were investigated to evaluate the magnetic exchange interaction and analyze the single molecule magnet behavior.

Field-induced slow magnetic relaxation in two-dimensional and three-dimensional Co(ii) coordination polymers

Two coordination polymers formulated as [Co(1,4-bimb)_0.5(5-aip)(H₂O)]_n (1) and [Co(1,4-bib)_1.5(5-hip)(H₂O)]_n (2) (1,4-bimb = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, 5-aip = 5-aminoisophthalic acid, 1,4-bib = 1,4-bis(1-imidazolyl)benzene and 5-hip = 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid) have been prepared and structurally characterized. Complex 1 is a two-dimensional (2D) network where Co(ii) is six coordinate in a CoO₄N₂ coordination environment, while the structure of 2 consists of a three-dimensional (3D) framework built from mononuclear Co(ii) units with distorted octahedral geometry as nodes. Static magnetic studies show that first-order orbital angular momentum may play an important role in the magnetic properties of 1, whereas strong easy-axis anisotropy (D = -102 cm^-1) was observed in 2. Alternating current (ac) susceptibility measurements demonstrate that both the complexes display field-induced single ion magnet (SIM) behavior.

Towards comparative investigation of Er- and Yb-based SMMs: the effect of the coordination environment configuration on the magnetic relaxation in the series of heteroleptic thiocyanate complexes

We prepared and studied two similar series of Er and Yb thiocyanates, involving [Ln(H₂O)₅(NCS)₃]·H₂O (1Er, 1Yb) as well as the molecular and ionic complexes with 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 1,10-phenantroline (phen), [Ln(H₂O)(bpy)₂(NCS)₃]·0.5(bpy)·H₂O (2Er, 2Yb), [Ln(H₂O)(phen)₂(NCS)₃]·phen·0.5H₂O (3Er, 3Yb), [Hbpy][Ln(bpy)₂(NCS)₄]·H₂O (4Er, 4Yb) and [Hphen][Ln(phen)₂(NCS)₄] (5Er, 5Yb). All the complexes were found to exhibit the properties of field-induced single-molecule magnets. For 1Yb, the effective value of the energy barrier for magnetization reversal, Δ_eff/k_B, equals to 50 K, which is among the highest ones currently known for molecular SMMs based on Yb³⁺. The obtained data are discussed involving essential structural features of the complexes, namely the configuration of the Ln environment, i.e. its composition and geometry as well as mutual distribution of different donating centers. To the best of our knowledge, this work also involves experimental investigation of the largest and thus sufficiently representative series of similar mononuclear SMMs based on Er and Yb within one study.

The effect of the second coordination sphere on the magnetism of [Ln(NO3)3(H2O)3]·(18-crown-6) (Ln = Dy and Er)

The objective of this work was the exploration of the effect of the second coordination sphere on the magnetic properties of [Ln(NO₃)₃(H₂O)₃]·(18C6) (Ln = Dy (1) and Er (2)) compounds comprising co-crystallized 18-crown-6 ethers. Both compounds were identified as field-induced single molecule magnets (SMMs) with estimated magnetization reversal barriers U_eff = 66–71 K for 1 and U_eff = 21–24 K for 2. Theoretical calculations with the B3LYP functional revealed substantial change and redistribution of the electrostatic potential upon accounting for the second coordination sphere represented by two 18C6 molecules, which resulted in the change of the crystal-field around metal atoms. As a result, the multireference CASSCF calculations exposed significant impact of the second coordination sphere on the energy splitting of the respective ⁶H_15/2 (Dy^III) and ⁴I_15/2 (Er^III) ground states, the magnetization reversal barrier and the magnetic anisotropy parameters. Moreover, the calculated magnetization reversal barriers, U_calc. = 57 K for 1 and U_calc. = 16 K for 2, are in good agreement with the experimental values accentuating the importance of the second coordination sphere on the magnetic properties of SMMs.

A mononuclear five-coordinate Co(ii) single molecule magnet with a spin crossover between the S = 1/2 and 3/2 states

Although a great number of single-ion magnets (SIMs) and spin-crossover (SCO) compounds have been discovered, multifunctional materials with the combination of SCO and SIM properties are extremely scarce. Here magnetic studies have been carried out for a mononuclear, five-coordinate cobalt(ii) complex [Co(3,4-lut)4Br]Br (1) with square pyramidal geometry. Direct-current magnetic measurement confirms the spin transition between the S = 1/2 and 3/2 states in the range of 150-290 K with a small hysteresis loop. Frequency- and temperature-dependent alternating-current magnetic susceptibility reveals slow magnetization relaxation under an applied dc field of 3000 Oe. The work here presents the first instance of the five-coordinate mononuclear cobalt(ii)-based SIM exhibiting the thermally induced complete SCO.

The influence of pseudohalide ligands on the SIM behaviour of four-coordinate benzylimidazole-containing cobalt(ii) complexes

Three, mononuclear complexes of the formula [Co(bmim)2(SCN)2] (1), [Co(bmim)2(NCO)2] (2) and [Co(bmim)2(N3)2] (3) [bmim = 1-benzyl-2-methylimidazole] were prepared and structurally analyzed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The cobalt(ii) ions in 1-3 are tetrahedrally coordinated with two bmim molecules and two pseudohalide anions. The angular distortion parameter δ was calculated and the SHAPE program (based on the CShM concept) was used for 1-3 to estimate the angular distortion from an ideal tetrahedron. The molecules of 1-3 are effectively separated, and the values of the shortest distance of cobalt-cobalt are 8.442(6) and 6.774(8) Å for 1, 10.349(8) and 10.716(8) Å for 2 and 6.778(1) and 9.232(1) Å for 3. Direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements on the crushed crystals of 1-3 were carried out in the temperature range 1.9-295 K. The variable-temperature magnetic data of 1-3 mainly obey the zero-field splitting effect (D) of the 4A2 ground term of the tetrahedral cobalt(ii) complexes (2D being the energy gap between the |±1/2 and |±3/2 levels of the spin). The analysis of their magnetic data through the Hamiltonian H = D[S2z - S(S + 1)/3] + E(Sx2 - Sy2) + gβHS led to the following best-fit parameters: g = 2.29, D = -7.5 cm-1 and E/D = 0.106 (1), g = 2.28, D = + 6.3 cm-1 and E/D = 0.007 (2) and g = 2.36, D = + 6.7 cm-1 and E/D = 0.090 (3). The signs of D for 1-3 were confirmed by Q-band EPR spectra on powdered samples in the temperature range 4.0-20 K. Field-induced SIM behaviour was observed for 1-3 below 4.0 K, and the frequency-dependent maxima of χ''M were observed for 1 and only incipient signals of χ''M occurred for 2 and 3. The values of the exponential factor (τ0) and activation energy (Ea) for 1-3 which were obtained from the Arrhenius plot suggest a single relaxation process characteristic of an Orbach mechanism.

Magnetic Anisotropy from Trigonal Prismatic to Trigonal Antiprismatic Co(II) Complexes: Experimental Observation and Theoretical Prediction

A family of trigonal antiprismatic Co(II) complexes was synthesized, which exhibited field-induced Raman process dominated single-molecule magnet behavior. Despite the coordination environment of Co(II) being of similar symmetry, the four complexes exhibit distinct dynamic magnetic properties owing to their packing arrangements and dipole-dipole interactions. On the basis of computational results we have demonstrated that the g _z and g_iso values follow a cosine relation with respect to the rotated angle φ (twist angle φ defined as the rotation angle of one coordination square away from the eclipse conformation to the other).

Slow Magnetic Relaxation in a Series of Mononuclear 8-Coordinate Fe(II) and Co(II) Complexes

A series of homoleptic mononuclear 8-coordinate Fe^II and Co^II compounds, [Fe^II(L²)₂](ClO₄)₂ (2), [Fe^II(L³)₂](ClO₄)₂ (3), [Fe^II(L⁴)₂](ClO₄)₂ (4), [Co^II(L¹)₂](ClO₄)₂ (5), [Co^II(L²)₂](ClO₄)₂ (6), [Co^II(L³)₂](ClO₄)₂ (7), and [Co^II(L⁴)₂](ClO₄)₂ (8) (L¹ and L² are 2,9-dialkylcarboxylate-1,10-phenanthroline ligands; L³ and L⁴ are 6,6'-dialkylcarboxylate-2,2'-bipyridine ligands), have been obtained, and their crystal structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The metal center in all of these compounds has an oversaturated coordination number of 8, which is completed by two neutral homoleptic tetradentate ligands and is unconventional in 3d-metal compounds. These compounds are further characterized by electronic spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and magnetic measurements. CV measurements of these complexes in MeCN solution exhibit rich redox properties. Magnetic measurements on these compounds demonstrate that the observed single-ion magnetic (SIM) behavior in the previously reported [Fe^II(L¹)₂](ClO₄)₂ (1) is not a contingent case, since all of the 8-coordinate compounds 2-8 exhibit interesting slow magnetic relaxation under applied direct current fields.

Single Ion Magnets from 3d to 5f: Developments and Strategies

Single-ion magnets (SIMs), exhibiting slow magnetization relaxation in the absence of the magnetic field, originate from their single spin-carrier centre. In pursuit of high-performance magnetic properties, such as high spin-reversal barrier and high blocking temperature, various metal centres were investigated to establish SIMs, including 3d and 5d transition metal ions, 4f lanthanide ions, and 5f actinide ions, which possess unique zero-field splitting and magnetic properties. Therefore, proper ligand field is of great importance to different types of metals. In the given great breakthroughs since the first SIM, [Pc₂ Tb]^- (Pc=dianion of phthalocyanine), was reported, strategies of ligand field design have emerged. In this review, the developments of SIMs with different metal centres are summarized, as well as the possible strategies.

Effect of linear and non-linear pseudohalides on the structural and magnetic properties of Co(ii) hexacoordinate single-molecule magnets

Field-induced single-molecule magnets based on Co(ii) hexacoordinate complexes comprising pseudohalides are reported.

Syntheses, crystal structures and magnetic properties of two mixed-valence Co(iii)Co(ii) compounds derived from Schiff base ligands: field-supported single-ion-magnet behavior with easy-plane anisotropy

Two μ-phenoxo-μ_1,1-azide dinuclear Co^IIICo^II complexes [Co^III(N₃)₂L¹(μ_1,1-N₃)Co^II(N₃)]·MeOH (1) and [Co^III(N₃)₂L²(μ_1,1-N₃)Co^II(N₃)]·MeOH (2) (HL¹ and HL² are two Schiff base ligands having N₂O-N₂O compartments) both possess one hexacoordinate Co(iii) and one pentacoordinate Co(ii) center. DC magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements show an appreciable amount of positive magnetic anisotropy (D/hc∼ 40 cm^-1) that is also confirmed by ab initio CASSCF calculations. AC susceptibility measurements of 1 reveal that it exhibits a slow magnetic relaxation with two relaxation channels. The external magnetic field supports the low-frequency (LF) channel that escapes on heating more progressively than the high-frequency (HF) branch. The relaxation time is as slow as τ = 255 ms at T = 1.9 K and B_DC = 0.6 T, where the LF mole fraction is 69%. The complex 2 also displays similar field-supported slow magnetic relaxation with two relaxation channels.

3D chiral and 2D achiral cobalt(ii) compounds constructed from a 4-(benzimidazole-1-yl)benzoic ligand exhibiting field-induced single-ion-magnet-type slow magnetic relaxation

Organizing magnetically isolated 3d transition metal ions, which behave as single-ion magnet (SIM) units, in a coordination network is a promising approach to design novel single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Herein 3D chiral and 2D achiral cobalt(ii) coordination compounds based on single metal nodes with a 4-(benzimidazole-1-yl)benzoic acid (Hbmzbc) ligand, namely, [Co(bmzbc)2(1,2-etdio)]n () (1,2-etdio = 1,2-ethanediol) and [Co(bmzbc)2(Hbmzbc)]n (), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The 3D chiral structure with 2-fold interpenetrating qtz topological nets consisting of totally achiral components was obtained via spontaneous resolution, while the achiral structure is a 2D (4,4) net. In both structures, individual cobalt(ii) ions are spatially well separated by the long organic ligands in the well-defined networks. Magnetic measurements on and showed field-induced slow magnetic relaxation resulting from single-ion anisotropy of the individual Co(ii) ions. Analysis of the dynamic ac susceptibilities with the Arrhenius law afforded an anisotropy energy barrier of 16.8(3) and 31.3(2) K under a 2 kOe static magnetic field for and , respectively. The distinct coordination environments of the Co(ii) ions in and lead to the different anisotropic energy barriers.

Determination of zero-field splitting in Co2+ halide complexes with magnetic and far-IR measurements

The ZFS parameters are determined by magnetic measurements and far-infrared magneto-transmission spectra for Co²⁺ complexes with halide substitutes.

Tetranuclear Ni(ii) and Co(ii) Schiff-base complexes with an M4O6 defective dicubane-like core: zero-field SMM behavior in the cobalt analogue

Two tetranuclear Ni₄ and Co₄ complexes were prepared and characterized. Their magnetic properties were thoroughly studied and it was revealed that the Co₄ compound behaves as a zero-field single-molecule magnet.

Three novel mononuclear Mn(iii)-based magnetic materials with square pyramidal versus octahedral geometries

Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that complexes 1 and 2 have square pyramidal geometry and 3 has octahedral geometry, which showed a dependence of negative anisotropy (D) values on the electronic, geometry and packing effects.

Slow magnetic relaxation in a mononuclear 8-coordinate Fe(ii) complex

The synthesis and structure of an 8-coordinate Fe(ii) compound [Fe^II(L1)₂](ClO₄)₂ (1) with a [FeN₄O₄] core are reported. It is the first example of an 8-coordinate Fe(ii) complex exhibiting field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour.
