Abstract
Ferrocene (Fc), a classical organometallic complex, has found potential applications in ligand design, catalysis, and analytical, biological, medicinal and materials chemistry. In recent years, the use of Fc as a building block in supramolecular chemistry has emerged. The molecular shape, size, and hydrophobicity of Fc make it an ideal guest for a variety of macrocyclic host molecules to form stable host-guest complexes. The vertical distance (3.3 Å) between two cyclopentadienyl rings and molecular "ball bearing" property in Fc support the formation of intramolecular π-π stacking, H-bonding and metallophilic interactions between two appropriate substituents in 1,n'-disubstituted ferrocenes. Along with these molecular features, the rigidity along with rotational flexibility, redox reversibility and oxidation-triggered tunable hydrophobicity of Fc have led to its use as an exotic building block for the development of a wide range of supramolecular assemblies such as smart molecular receptors, intricate metal-organic assemblies, supramolecular polymers, and gels including out-of-equilibrium assemblies and metal nanoparticle assemblies. This review highlights the concepts behind the design and development of these assemblies, where the Fc unit has a direct and defined role in their formation and function. The use of Fc in supramolecular assembly is still a relatively young field and set to be the subject of increasing research interest towards the development of fascinating supramolecular structures with tailored properties and programmable functions towards applications in materials and biological sciences.

Abstract
Herein, we report a chiral guest's triggered spring-like contraction and extension motions coupled with unidirectional twisting in a novel flexible and 'nano-size' achiral trizinc(ii)porphyrin trimer host upon step-wise formation of 1 : 1, 1 : 2, and 1 : 4 host-guest supramolecular complexes based on the stoichiometry of the diamine guests for the first time. During these processes, porphyrin CD responses have been induced, inverted, and amplified, and reduced, respectively, in a single molecular framework due to the change in the interporphyrin interactions and helicity. Also, the sign of the CD couplets is just the opposite between R and S substrates which suggests that the chirality is dictated solely by the stereographic projection of the chiral center. Interestingly, the long-range electronic communications between the three porphyrin rings generate trisignate CD signals that provide further information about molecular structures.

Abstract
A highly flexible pyrrole-bridged Zn(II)porphyrin dimer has been successfully utilized as an efficient host which enables an accurate determination of the absolute configuration directly for a large number of chiral amino alcohols and 1,2-diols. The addition of substrates resulted in the formation of 1 : 1 sandwich complexes which, after the addition of excess substrates, produced 1 : 2 host-guest complexes. In principle, the 1 : 2 host-guest complexes can be stabilized in three possible conformations, viz. exo-exo, exo-endo, and endo-endo based on how a substrate binds to the metal. The endo-endo conformation is stabilized by two strong interligand H-bonds [O-H⋯O(H)] between encapsulated diols which thereby interlock the stereochemistry. In the absence of such interligand H-bonding interactions, exo-endo binding is preferred as it is indeed observed for amino alcohols which show weaker CD couplets due to the free movement of substrates. The sandwich complexes with amino alcohols show a more intense CD couplet compared to the diols due to the stronger binding of the amine functionality (-NH2) towards a Zn-atom over an alcoholic moiety (-OH). The CD amplitude showed linear dependence with a binding constant for the 1 : 1 sandwich complex upon varying the substrates. Spectroscopic investigations, single crystal X-ray structure determination of four such host-guest complexes and DFT studies have enabled us to rationalize systematically the origin of optical activity unambiguously in the 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 host-guest complexes, which lead to an absolute stereochemical determination of a large number of chiral substrates. The larger vertical and horizontal flexibility of a diethyl pyrrole spacer induces stronger binding of the substrates to form the 1 : 1 complex with a much larger torsional angle along with intense CD couplets. In contrast, a rigid dibenzothiophene-bridged tweezer, due to its limited horizontal and vertical flexibility, facilitates 1 : 2 complexation more as compared to the highly flexible pyrrole-bridged host which results in stronger binding of the substrate with the intense CD couplet for the former.

Abstract
A rationalization for the chirality transfer mechanism in the supramolecular host-guest assemblies of an achiral Zn(II) porphyrin dimer (host) and a series of chiral diamines and diamino esters (substrates) via cyclic dimer formation has been reported for the first time. Stepwise formations of 2:2 host-guest cyclic dimers and 1:2 host-guest monomeric complexes have been observed via intermolecular assembling and disassembling processes. A large bisignate CD couplet was observed for the cyclic dimer, whereas the monomeric complexes exhibited negligible CD intensity. Crystallographic characterizations demonstrate that the strong intermolecular H bonding in cyclic dimers is responsible for their stability over the linear chain, which thereby display high-intensity bisignate CD couplets. In order to minimize the steric crowding within the host-guest assembly, the cyclic dimer switches its helicity toward the conformer having less steric hindrance. The cyclic scaffold is oriented according to the pre-existing chirality of the substrate in both the solid and solution phases: the substrates having R chirality display a negative CD couplet, whereas the substrates with S chirality display a positive couplet. Opposite signs for the CD couplets between R and S substrates suggest that the stereographic projection at the chiral centers solely dictates the overall helicity of the cyclic dimer. DFT studies further support the experimental observations.

Abstract
Molecular recognition of host/guest molecules represents the basis of many biological processes and phenomena. Enzymatic catalysis and inhibition, immunological response, reproduction of genetic information, biological regulatory functions, the effects of drugs, and ion transfer-all these processes include the stage of structure recognition during complexation. The goal of this review is to solicit and publish the latest advances in the design and sensing and binding abilities of porphyrin-based heterotopic receptors with well-defined geometries, the recognition ability of which is realized due to ionic, H-bridge, charge transfer, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic interactions. The dissection of the considered low-energy processes at the molecular scale expands our capabilities in the development of effective systems for controlled recognition, selective delivery, and prolonged release of substrates of different natures (including drugs) to their sites of functioning.

Abstract
Supramolecular chirogenesis is one of the most rudimentary topics in the interdisciplinary sciences and essentially deals with various natural processes and innovative modern technologies. A comprehensive and rigorous understanding of such phenomenon is necessary to have a clear insight into the fundamental mechanisms and the various controlling factors, which would eventually lead to a range of practical applications of chiral supramolecular science. Metalloporphyrin tweezers have been extensively employed for such chirogenic processes due to their exciting physicochemical and tunable spectral properties, large stabilities, easily available synthetic protocols, and excellent abilities to form molecular assemblies. During the last few decades, various metalloporphyrin tweezers have been developed and considerably utilized by several research groups for assigning the absolute configuration to a variety of chiral diamines, conjugates of primary and secondary amines, amino alcohols, secondary alcohols, α-chiral carboxylic acids, etc. Our group has been at the forefront in trying to establish the structure-property correlation in this important area of interdisciplinary research. A brief account of our systematic investigation for understanding the underpinning mechanism of chirality induction and control at the molecular level over the last few years is presented in this Perspective article. The comprehensive understanding of such mechanistic details will be helpful in understanding various natural processes and designing modern technologies for various chirogenic functions in the fields of molecular sensors, nanotechnology, and supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract
In this contribution, the synthesis and the unusual aggregation/deaggregation properties in solution of two dinuclear ZnII Schiff-base complexes of tetradentate Schiff-base units, having non-conjugated spacers between each molecular unit, are reported in comparison to the mononuclear model complex. Through detailed 1H NMR, DOSY NMR, optical absorption, fluorescence emission, and multivariate analysis of optical absorption data, emerge some interesting findings. In solution of non-coordinating solvents, these Lewis acidic species are characterized as monomers stabilized by formation of intramolecular aggregates, having distinct spectroscopic properties in comparison to intermolecular aggregates derived from the mononuclear model analogue. Instead, in coordinating solvents they exhibit a typical behaviour, with formation of stable adducts showing a strong fluorescence. Deaggregation studies using pyridine as reference Lewis base allowed establishing a larger thermodynamic stability of these intramolecular aggregates, in comparison to intermolecular aggregates, even larger than that of aggregates of conjugated multinuclear complexes. The combined analysis of spectroscopic data upon deaggregation with ditopic Lewis bases unambiguously demonstrated the formation of stable 1 : 1 adducts, with higher binding constants in comparison to those related to monotopic species. Therefore, the present Lewis acidic, dinuclear complexes behave as molecular tweezers of ditopic guests having a strong Lewis basicity.

Abstract
Chiral metamaterials with versatile designs can exhibit orders of magnitude enhancement in chiroptical responses compared with that of the natural chiral media. Here, we propose an ease-of-fabrication three-dimensional (3D) chiral metamaterial consisting of vertical asymmetric plate-shape resonators along a planar air hole array with extraordinary optical transmission. It is theoretically shown that such chiral metamaterials simultaneously support five-fold plasmonic Fano resonance states and exhibit significant bisignate circular dichroism (CD) with amplitude as large as 0.8 due to the distinctive local electric field distributions. More interestingly, a "bridge" in the proposed double-plate-based architectures can act as a flipped ruler that is able to continuously manipulate optical chirality including the handedness-selective enhancement and the switching of CD signals. Importantly, the proposed designs have been readily fabricated by using a focused-ion-beam irradiation-induced folding technique and they consistently exhibited five-fold Fano resonances with strong CD effects in experiments. The studies are helpful for the understanding, designing and improvement of chiral optical systems towards potential applications such as ultrasensitive biosensing, polarimetric imaging, quantum information processing, etc.

Abstract
Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) had attracted enormous interests owing to their extraordinary optical, physical, and chemical properties. Herein, we prepared for the first time a series of chiral TMD quantum dots (QDs) from MoS2 and WS2 bulk crystals by covalent modification with chiral ligands cysteine and penicillamine. The chiral TMD QDs were carefully investigated by spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Their chiral optical activity was confirmed by distinct circular dichroism signals different to those of the chiral ligands. Interestingly, with the assistance of copper ions, the chiral QDs displayed strong and chiral selective peroxidase-like activity. Up to now, inorganic nanomaterials with peroxidase-like activity were tremendous but seldom examples with enantioselectivity. The enantioselectivity of our chiral TMD QDs toward chiral substrates d- and l-tyrosinol was highly up to 6.77, which was almost the best performance ever reported. The mechanisms of enantioselectivity was further investigated by quartz crystal microbalance assays. We believed that because of the extraordinary electronic and optical properties, the chiral TMD QDs should be useful for nonlinear optical materials, asymmetric catalysis, chiral and biological sensors, and so on.

Abstract
This review highlights and summarizes various optically active porphyrin and phthalocyanine molecules prepared using a wide range of structural modification methods to improve the design of novel structures and their applications. The induced chirality of some illustrative achiral bis-porphyrins with a chiral guest molecule is introduced because these systems are ideal for the identification and separation of chiral biologically active substrates. In addition, the relationship between CD signal and the absolute configuration of the molecule is analyzed through an analysis of the results of molecular modeling calculations. Possible future research directions are also discussed.

Abstract
Ferrocene is chemically robust and readily functionalized which enables its facile incorporation into more complex molecular systems. This coupled with ferrocene's reversible redox properties and ability to function as a “molecular ball bearing” has led to the use of ferrocene as a component in wide range of non-interlocked synthetic molecular machine systems.

Abstract
Ditopic binding of various dinitrogen compounds to three bisporphyrin molecular tweezers with spacers of varying conformational rigidity, incorporating the planar enediyne (1), the helical stiff stilbene (2), or the semi-rigid glycoluril motif fused to the porphyrins (3), are compared. Binding constants Ka = 104–106 M−1 reveal subtle differences between these tweezers, that are discussed in terms of porphyrin dislocation modes. Exciton coupled circular dichroism (ECCD) of complexes with chiral dinitrogen guests provides experimental evidence for the conformational properties of the tweezers. The results are further supported and rationalized by conformational analysis.

Abstract
For the first time, a clear and unambiguous rationalization of chirality induction, inversion and subsequent amplification process has been demonstrated for the 1 : 1 sandwich and 2 : 3 host-guest supramolecular complexes consisting of Zn(II) host and chiral diamines as guests that has so far remained the most outstanding issue for the chirogenic process.
