Phosphasalalen Rare-Earth Complexes for the Polymerization of rac-Lactide and rac-β-Butyrolactone. Inorg Chem 2021; 60:705-717. Abstract
A series of new phosphasalalen pro-ligands, analogues of salalen but with an iminophosphorane replacing the imine functionality, and their corresponding rare-earth alkoxide and siloxide complexes were synthesized. The multinuclear NMR spectra and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that, for the tert-butoxide and ethoxide complexes, the resulting phosphasalalen rare-earth product was composed of a mononuclear alkoxide and a binuclear complex containing bridged alkoxo and hydroxo groups, while an analogous binuclear complex was isolated as the sole product for the siloxide complex. All the complexes could catalyze the heteroselective ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide (Pr up to 0.77) with high catalytic activities and a controlled polydispersity. Remarkably, the yttrium and lutetium phosphasalalen complexes could also efficiently catalyze the ROP of rac-β-butyrolactone to produce syndiotactic polymers (Pr up to 0.73) while their salalen analogues were inert, revealing the special effects of the iminophosphorane moiety. Detailed end-group analyses and kinetic investigations suggested that the alkoxo-hydroxo-bridged complexes maintained their binuclear structures in the polymerization.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to immobilize a Co(ii) salen complex on KCC-1 as a catalyst that can be recovered (Co(ii) salen complex@KCC-1). Field-emission transmission electron microscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy, and XRD were used to confirm the structure and chemical nature of Co(ii) salen complex@KCC-1. The oxidation efficiency was obtained for an extensive range of sulfides and alcohols using this sustainable catalyst, alongside O2 as an oxygen source and isobutyraldehyde (IBA) as an oxygen acceptor, with superior selectivity and conversion for the relevant oxidation products (sulfoxides and ketones or aldehydes) under moderate conditions. The μ-oxo and peroxo groups on the ligands of the Co complex appeared to be responsible for the superior activity of the catalyst. Essential factors behind the oxidation of alcohol and sulfoxides were investigated, including the catalyst, solvent, and temperature. In this paper, molecular oxygen (O2) was used as a green oxidant. Furthermore, kinetic studies were conducted, revealing a first-order reaction for the oxidation of both benzyl alcohol and sulfide. The reaction progressed at mild temperature, and the catalyst could be easily recovered and reused for numerous consecutive runs under the reaction conditions, without any substantial reduction in the functionality of the catalytic system.

Abstract
Rare-earth metal complexes usually exhibit high activities in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide, yet only a few scandium complexes have shown satisfactory activity. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of chiral anilido-oxazoline-supported scandium and yttrium complexes that exhibit high activity in the ROP of racemic lactide (rac-LA). Complexes La-f-Ln(CH2SiMe3)2THF (La-f = 2-(2,6-R2PhN)-phenyl-4-(S)-R'-oxazoline; for 1a-f: L = La-f, Ln = Sc; for 2a-d: L = La-d, Ln = Y) were synthesized via the convenient one-pot reaction of Ln(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 (Ln = Sc, Y) with the corresponding proligands. The crystal structures of 1a, 1d, 1e, and 1f were isostructural, adopting a distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration. Sc complexes 1 showed outstanding activity in the ROP of rac-LA with heteroselectivity. TOFs of up to 720 h-1 and 2910 h-1 were obtained in THF at room temperature and toluene at 60 °C, respectively. To our knowledge, these are the highest activities reported for Sc systems. Y complexes 2 showed higher activity and heteroselectivity than the Sc complexes, with TOFs of up to 1176 h-1 in THF at room temperature. Compared with the ortho-substituent on the anilido moiety, the bulky substituent at the chiral center of the oxazoline ring had a greater effect on controlling the heteroselectivity.

Abstract
Reactions of amine-bridged bis(phenolate) protio-ligands N,N-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)aminoacetic acid (L(1)-H3) and N,N-bis[3,5-bis(α,α'-dimethylbenzyl)-2-hydroxybenzyl]aminoacetic acid (L(2)-H3), with 1 equiv. M[N(SiMe3)2]3 (M = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Y) in THF at room temperature yielded the neutral rare-earth complexes [M2(L)2(THF)4] (L = L(1), M = La (), Nd (), Sm (), Gd (), Y (); L = L(2), M = La (), Nd (), Sm (), Gd (), Y ()). All of these complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis and in the case of yttrium and lanthanum complexes, (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The molecular structure of revealed dinuclear species in which the eight-coordinate lanthanum centers were bonded to two oxygen atoms of two THF molecules, to three oxygen atoms and one nitrogen atom of one L(1) ligand, and two oxygen atoms of the carboxyl group of another. Complexes were also dinuclear species containing seven-coordinate metal centers similar to , albeit with bonding to one rather than two carboxyl group oxygens of another ligand. Further treatment of with excess benzyl alcohol provided dinuclear complex [La2(L(1))2(BnOH)6] (), in which each lanthanum ion is eight-coordinate, bonded to three oxygen atoms and one nitrogen atom of one ligand, three oxygen atoms of three BnOH molecules, as well as one oxygen atom of bridging carboxyl group of the other ligand. In the presence of BnOH, complexes efficiently catalyzed the ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide in a controlled manner and gave polymers with relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The kinetic and mechanistic studies associated with the ROP of l-lactide using /BnOH initiating system have been performed.

Abstract
The RM1 quantum chemical model for the calculation of complexes of Tm(III), Yb(III) and Lu(III) is advanced. Subsequently, we tested the models by fully optimizing the geometries of 126 complexes. We then compared the optimized structures with known crystallographic ones from the Cambridge Structural Database. Results indicate that, for thulium complexes, the accuracy in terms of the distances between the lanthanide ion and its directly coordinated atoms is about 2%. Corresponding results for ytterbium and lutetium are both 3%, levels of accuracy useful for the design of lanthanide complexes, targeting their countless applications.

Abstract
Reactions of LSnCl (1) (L = N(2,6-iPr2C6H3)(SiMe3)) with sulfur and selenium, respectively under mild conditions yielded two tin chalcogenide clusters. Surprisingly the tin atoms of the L4Sn4S6 (2) and L4Sn4Se6 (3) clusters are oxidized from Sn(II) of the precursor to Sn(IV) of the products under concomitant reduction of elemental sulfur and selenium to sulfide and selenide, respectively. The released chlorine radicals from the precursor LSnCl (1) react under oxidative addition with another LSnCl molecule to yield the side product LSnCl3 (4). The soluble nature of clusters 2 and 3 in organic solvents is a unique property of this class of compounds and makes them suitable for reactions in organic solvents. Compounds 2 and 3 were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and multinuclear NMR investigations. Furthermore in ROP polymerization, the two products show high catalytic activity. For the first time a tin selenide compound functions in ROP catalysis.

Synthesis of Sodium Complexes Supported with NNO-Tridentate Schiff Base Ligands and Their Applications in the Ring-Opening Polymerization of L-Lactide. Inorg Chem 2016; 55:1423-32. Abstract
A series of sodium complexes bearing NNO-tridentate Schiff base ligands with an N-pendant arm were synthesized and used as catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide (L-LA). Electronic effects of ancillary ligands coordinated by sodium complexes substantially influence the catalysis, and ligands with electron-donating groups increase the catalytic activity of the sodium complexes for catalyzing L-LA polymerization. In particular, a sodium complex bearing a 4-methoxy group has the highest activity with conversion up to 95% within 30 s at 0 °C and a low polydispersity index of 1.13, whereas the 4-bromo group showed the poorest performance with regard to the catalytic rate of L-LA polymerization in the presence of benzyl alcohol (BnOH). (1)H NMR pulsed-gradient spin-echo diffusion experiments and single-crystal X-ray analyses showed that sodium complexes [L(H)Na(THF)]2 and [L(4-Cl)Na(THF)]2 were dinuclear species in both solution and the solid state. The kinetic results indicated a first-order dependence on each of [[L(4-Cl)Na]2], [l-LA], and [BnOH].

Abstract
Two binuclear magnesium and zinc alkoxides supported by a bis-salalen type dinucleating heptadentate Schiff base ligand were synthesized and fully characterized. The two complexes are efficient initiators for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of L-lactide, affording polymers with narrow polydispersities and desirable molecular weights. Interestingly, the mechanisms for the ROP of lactide are different at different temperatures. At a high temperature of 130 °C, a coordination-insertion mechanism is reasonable for the bulk melt polymerization of lactide. At a low temperature, the alkoxide cannot initiate the ROP reaction; however, upon the addition of external benzyl alcohol into the system, the ROP of lactide can smoothly proceed via an "activated monomer" mechanism. In addition, these complexes display slight stereo-selectivity for the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide, affording partially isotactic polylactide in toluene with a Pm value of 0.59.

The monomeric nature and versatile coordination patterns of these complexes in the solid state were further confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies on complexes 2, 3, 5, and 7. In complex 3, the N,N-diisopropylamino group on the pendant side arm does not coordinate to the metal center; only the remaining three donors of the aminophenolate ligand and the silylamido group interact with the zinc center. By contrast, in complexes 2, 5, and 7, the amino group of the aryl moiety does not coordinate to the metal center, while the amino group on the pendant side arm coordinates. At room temperature, the above-mentioned structural features of these complexes are retained in solution, as confirmed by (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Complexes 1-7 proved to be efficient initiators for the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide (rac-LA) at ambient temperature, and the polymerizations were better controlled in the presence of 2-propanol. The coordination pattern of the aminophenolate ligand exerted a significant influence on the stereoselectivity of the corresponding complex toward the polymerization of rac-LA, leading to the production of heterotactic biased polylactides (PLAs) by complexes 1 and 3 (Pm = 0.40-0.46) and moderately to highly isotactic PLAs by complexes 2 and 4-7 (Pm = 0.70-0.81). Detailed kinetic investigations revealed a first-order dependence on the monomer concentration for all complexes and different orders in the initiator concentration ranging from 1.78 to 1.81. The nature of the solvent as well as the molar ratio of the zinc complex and 2-propanol also displayed certain influence on the order of rac-LA polymerization in the initiator concentration. Factional orders of 1.80, 1.38, and 1.11 were obtained by using complex 5/(i)PrOH (1:1) in toluene and tetrahydrofuran and complex 5/(i)PrOH (1:2) in toluene, respectively. On the basis of DOSY and (1)H and (13)C NMR studies of zinc alkoxide model complexes "LZn(OCMe2COOMe)" as well as the fractional orders of 1.78-1.81 in the initiator concentration, activation/insertion processes likely involving more than one monomeric active species were then hypothesized.
