Abstract
The detection of fluoride ions in water and other sources is crucial because they can harm human health if they exceed the safe limit of 1-1.5 ppm. BODIPY (boron dipyrromethene) dyes are promising fluorophores for chemosensors, and their design and modification have attracted a lot of attention. Their advantages include visible light excitation and emission, high molar absorption coefficients (ε) and fluorescence quantum yields [ϕ (λ)], and flexible scaffold manipulation for various applications. In this article, we review the progress of BODIPY-based sensors for fluoride ions from the early 2000s to the present. We focus on the different scaffold modifications of the sensors and their corresponding responses, as well as the underlying photophysical mechanisms and potential uses of each sensor.

Abstract
A series of novel amidinate ligated four-coordinated boron compounds, [(Ar)-C(tBuN)2BF2] (1BF2-6BF2), were synthesised and structurally characterised (Ar = 1-phenyl, 2-naphthyl, 2-anthryl, 9-anthryl, 9-phenanthryl and 1-pyrene). The increased π-conjugation of Ar-substitution on the amidinate ligand results in dark blue-emission in compounds 3BF2-6BF2. All these compounds are emissive in the solution state. The 2-anthryl substituted compound 3BF2 was found to exhibit a maximum quantum yield of 48% in dichloromethane. Theoretical studies were carried out which validate the hypothesis about the increased π-conjugation.

Abstract
Triarylborane-based discrete metal-carbene supramolecular cages [M3(1)2](PF6)3 (M = Ag, Au) were synthesized and characterized. The new hexacarbene assemblies show a significant solvatochromic effect in solvents of different polarity. Furthermore, the reversible fluoride binding property of [Au3(1)2](PF6)3 was investigated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence titrations. This work holds promise for future developments in the area of highly emissive and stimulus-responsive NHC-metal assemblies.

Abstract
Bioimaging of subcellular organelles such as mitochondria is crucial for detecting physiological abnormalities induced by fluctuations in the levels of various analytes. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of two novel water-soluble cationic Lewis acid triarylborane-triarylamine conjugates 1 and 2. The optical characteristics of 1 and 2 and their precursor compounds BTPA-NMe2 and BTPA-2NMe2 were evaluated, which show similar absorption and fluorescence spectra, with 1 and 2 exhibiting higher quantum yields of 0.73 and 0.64, respectively, than those of the precursors BTPA-NMe2 and BTPA-2NMe2, indicating the partial disruption of the ICT process and the activation of alternative emission bands in 1 and 2. The live cell imaging ability of compound 2 was examined in HeLa cells using a confocal microscope. Moreover, mitochondrial internalisation using compound 2 was effective and it was found to have high photostability under UV light conditions. Furthermore, compound 2 demonstrated an evident colorimetric response with a colour change to dark yellow in aqueous environments, indicating that it could be used for anion sensing. The spectral changes were observed in UV-visible and fluorescence titration experiments, which were strongly supported by DFT calculations. In short, compound 2 synthesized by us can be exclusively utilized for the selective localization of mitochondria with less cytotoxicity and shows excellent colorimetric response to aqueous inorganic fluoride at levels as low as 0.1 ppm with high selectivity.

Abstract
We report the design and synthesis of a series of room temperature phosphorescent phosphoramides TPTZPO, TPTZPS, and TPTZPSe with a donor (phenothiazine)-acceptor (P = X, X = O, S, and Se) architecture. All the compounds show structureless fluorescence with a nanosecond lifetime in dilute solutions. However, these compounds show dual fluorescence and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in the solid state. Both the intensity and energy of luminescence depend on the heteroatom attached to the phosphorus center. For example, compound TPTZPO with the P[double bond, length as m-dash]O unit exhibits fluorescence at a higher energy region than TPTZPS and TPTZPSe with the P[double bond, length as m-dash]S and P[double bond, length as m-dash]Se groups, respectively. Crystalline samples of TPTZPO, TPTZPS, and TPTZPSe show stronger RTP than the amorphous powder of respective compounds. Detailed steady-state, time-resolved photoluminescence and computational studies established that the 3n-π* state dominated by the phenothiazine moiety is the emissive state of these compounds. Although TPTZPS and TPTZPSe crystallized in the chiral space group, only TPTZPSe showed chiroptical properties in the solid state. The luminescence dissymmetry factor (g lum) value of TPTZPS is small and below the detection limit, and a CPL spectrum could not be observed for this compound.

Abstract
Herein, we report the design and synthesis of far-red emissive boryl-thiophene-BODIPY triads 1-3. The π-conjugation length and electronic communication between borane and BODIPY moieties are tuned by judiciously varying the size of the oligothiophene spacer in these triads (1, terthiophene; 2, quarterthiophene; and 3, pentathiophene). Conjugates 1-3 showed intriguing triple emissions in the blue to far-red regions. Detailed optical, time-resolved decay kinetics, time-resolved area-normalized emission spectra (TRANES), fluoride binding, and computational studies suggest that the multiple emissions in these triads are due to an inefficient transfer of energy from the boryl-oligothiophene to the BODIPY unit. In addition, all of the conjugates showed a ratiometric fluorescence response to fluoride ions.

Abstract
We studied the dual emission characteristics of a series of boryl-BODIPYs (1-6) comprised of triarylborane (TAB) as an energy donor and BODIPY as an energy acceptor. The molecular conformations of dyads 1-6 were systematically tuned by judiciously changing the spacer that bridged the boryl and BODIPY moieties. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) are localized in 3, 4, and 6 with a twisted molecular conformation. In contrast, FMOs are significantly delocalized in 1, 2, and 5 with the least-twisted molecular conformation. Dyads 1-6 showed dual emission features when they were excited at the TAB-dominated absorption band. However, the ratio between the two emission bands in 1-6 significantly varied depending on the molecular conformations. Systematic photoluminescence (PL) studies (both steady-state and time-resolved PL) together with computational, crystal structure, and anion binding studies established that the frustrated excited-state energy transfer from borane to BODIPY is the cause of the dual emission features in these molecular dyads. These studies also revealed that the energy transfer from borane to BODIPY can be elegantly tuned by modulating the dihedral angle between these two moieties.

Abstract
Three-coordinated organoboron fluorophores bearing 3,5-diphenyl pyrazoles have been synthesized. The pyrazole anchored boron fluorophores show selective fluorescence quenching response to trinitrophenol (or) picric acid (PA) and have the ability to discriminate picric acid over other analytes. We investigated nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of these three-coordinated organoboron compounds (in solutions) in the presence and absence of PA. In absence of PA, the two-photon-absorption coefficient (β) of organoboron fluorophores exhibits a variation from 2 × 10-12 cm W-1 to 4 × 10-12 cm W-1. The results also reveal that the NLO characteristics of organoboron fluorophores exhibit a discernible variation with PA addition which has correlations with quenching observed in fluorescence measurements.

Abstract
Three new triads [bis(mesityl)boryl (Mes2B)-vinylbithiophene-BODIPY] bearing zero (1), two (2), and four (3) methyl groups on the BODIPY core are synthesized, and their optical properties are reported. The vinyl linker between the thiophene rings in the spacer moiety improved the electronic communication between the boryl and BODIPY units. It displayed a bathochromic shift in the absorption and emission spectra compared to the Mes2B-bithiophene-BODIPY triad reported elsewhere. These compounds exhibit intriguing multiple-emission features due to an incomplete energy transfer from donor borane to the acceptor BODIPY unit. These compounds' photoluminescence color can be conveniently fine-tuned by fluoride binding at the coordinatively unsaturated tricoordinate boron center. Triad 3, with a rigid molecular structure, showed a sharp emission band, whereas triads 1 and 2, with flexible molecular structures, displayed broad emission bands with a robust bathochromic shift, ascribed to their excited state structural reorganizations. These triads selectively bind fluoride ions and show colorimetric responses, which can be seen with an unaided eye. DFT computational studies were performed to rationalize the optical signatures of these compounds.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of 10-(dimesitylboryl)-N,N-di-p-tolylbenzo[c]phenanthren-4-amine (3-B(Mes)2 -[4]helix-9-N(p-Tol)2 1) and 13-(dimesitylboryl)-N,N-di-p-tolyldibenzo[c,g]phenanthren-8-amine (3-B(Mes)2 -[5]helix-12-N(p-Tol)2 2) are reported herein. Their electrochemical and photophysical properties have been studied experimentally and theoretically. The donor and acceptor-substituted helicene derivatives exhibit moderate fluorescence quantum yields in THF (Φf =0.48 and 0.61 for 1 and 2, respectively), which are higher than unsubstituted ones (Φf =0.18 for [4]helicene; Φf <0.05 for [n]helicenes (n≥5)). In the solid state, the Φf values are higher (Φf =1.00 and 0.55 for 1 and 2, respectively) than those in solution, most likely due to the restrictions of molecular motions. The S1 ←S0 transitions of 1 and 2 are predominately HOMO→LUMO transitions. Upon excitation with UV light, the interplanar angle between the two terminal aryl rings of the [5]helix core of 2 decreases (S1 state compared with S0 state), which is similar to placing a spring under an external force.

Abstract
We report a series of room temperature phosphorescent compounds 1-6 composed of triarylborane (TAB) and cyclometallated iridium complexes. The optical characteristics such as energy of transition and luminescence quantum yield of these compounds can be conveniently fine-tuned by judiciously varying the cyclometallating ligand and the spacer between boron and iridium centers. Compounds 1-6 exhibit bright phosphorescence with the emission color ranging from green to red under a N2 atmosphere. A maximum quantum yield of 0.95 was observed for complex 2. Complexes 1-6 exhibit a rare type of dual emission from singlet and triplet excited states under ambient conditions. The experimental observations are well supported by the theoretical calculations.

Abstract
The S0→Si, i=1-5 electronic transitions of four 8-(4-aniline)-BODIPY and four 8-(N,N-dimethyl)-BODIPY dyes, differ by number and position of methyl substituents in the BODIPY frame, were investigated theoretically using ab initio the coupled cluster doubles (CC2) and TD-CAM-B3LYP methods. Methyl substituents in the BODIPY frame and the aniline fragment at the meso position disturb energy of local excitations S0→S1, S0→S3, and S0→S4 weakly in comparison with the fully unsubstituted BODIPY molecule. These transitions in experimental spectra form the most long-wave absorption bands at ca. 500nm as well as absorption bands in the region of 300-400nm. At the same time, the presence of aniline fragments leads to the appearance of new S0→S2 transitions of the charge transfer character in electronic spectra of BODIPYs. We also found a linear relationship between vertical energy of these charge transfer transitions and the electron donating power of an aniline fragment and electron accepting power of the BODIPY core depending on the number and position of methyl groups. The CC2 method provides the best overall description of the excitation energies in line with the experimental observations. On average, the quality of TD-CAM-B3LYP is almost equal to that of CC2, however the TD method with the CAM-B3LYP functional slightly underestimates the CT excitation energy.

Abstract
Triarylborane-A2H2 (1) and triarylborane-Zn-A2H2 porphyrins (2) have been synthesized by acid catalyzed condensation of 4-dimesitylboryl-benzaldehyde and dipyrromethane under ambient conditions. Compounds 1 and 2 showed multiple emission bands upon excitation at the triarylborane dominated absorption region (350 nm). Detailed experimental and computational studies show that the multiple emission features of 1 and 2 arise as a result of a partial energy transfer from the donor (triarylborane) to the acceptor (porphyrin) moieties. Compounds 1 and 2 showed very high selectivities towards fluoride ions compared to other competing anions.

Abstract
Three new triarylborane conjugated dicyanovinyl chromophores (Mes2B-π-donor-DCV); donor: N-methyldiphenylamine () and triphenylamine ( and [with two BMes2 substitutions]) of type A-D-A (acceptor-donor-acceptor) are reported. Compounds exhibit intense charge transfer (CT) absorption bands in the visible region. These absorption peaks are combination CT bands of the amine donor to both the BMes2 and DCV units. This inference was supported by theoretical studies. Compound shows weak fluorescence compared to and . The discrimination of fluoride and cyanide ions is essential in the case of triarylborane (TAB) based anion sensors as a similar response is given towards both the anions. Anion binding studies of , and showed that fluoride ions bind selectively to the boron centre and block the corresponding CT transition (donor to BMes2) leaving the other CT transition to be red shifted. On the other hand, cyanide ions bind with both the receptor sites and stop both the CT transition processes and hence a different colorimetric response was noted. The binding of F(-)/CN(-) induces colour changes in the visible region of the electronic spectra of and , which allows for the naked-eye detection of F(-) and CN(-) ions. The anion binding mechanisms are established using NMR titration experiments.

Abstract
A facile and versatile approach was developed to access ambipolar boron-containing macrocycles. Two examples of new conjugated cyclic motifs are presented with carbazole moieties as donors and borane moieties as acceptors embedded into the ring system. They were first predicted using computational methods. Possible targets with appropriately shaped π-conjugated bridges that minimize the overall ring strain were identified and their geometry was optimized by DFT methods. The synthetic demonstration was then accomplished using organometallic condensation reactions under high dilution conditions. The resulting monodisperse macrocycles provide important insights into the design principles necessary for the preparation of new unstrained macrocycles with interesting optical and electronic characteristics. The current research also offers a more general approach to conjugated ambipolar B/N macrocycles as a promising new family of (opto)electronic materials.

Abstract
Fluoride ions have the important roles in a lot of physiological activities related with biological and medical system, such as water fluoridation, caries treatment, and bone disease treatment. Great efforts have been made to develop new methods and strategies for F(-) detection in the past decades. Traditional methods for the detection of F(-) including ion chromatography, ion-selective electrodes, and spectroscopic techniques have the limitations in the biomedicine research. The fluorescent probes for F(-) are very promising that overcome some drawbacks of traditional fluoride detection methods. These probes exhibit high selectivity, high sensitivity as well as quick response to the detection of fluoride anions. The review commences with a brief description of photophysical mechanisms for fluorescent probes for fluoride, including photo induced electron transfer (PET), intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). Followed by a discussion about common dyes for fluorescent fluoride probes, such as anthracene, naphalimide, pyrene, BODIPY, fluorescein, rhodamine, resorufin, coumarin, cyanine, and near-infrared (NIR) dyes. We divide the fluorescent probes for fluoride in cellular application systems into nine groups, for example, type of hydrogen bonds, type of cleavage of Si-O bonds, type of Si-O bond cleavage and cylization reactions, etc. We also review the recent reported carriers in the delivery of fluorescent fluoride probes. Seventy-four typical fluorescent fluoride probes are listed and compared in detail, including quantum yield, reaction medium, excitation and emission wavelengths, linear detection range, selectivity for F(-), mechanism, and analytical applications. Finally, we discuss the future challenges of the application of fluorescent fluoride probes in cellular system and in vivo. We wish that more and more excellent fluorescent fluoride probes will be developed and applied in the biomedicine field in the future.

D-π-A triarylboron compounds with tunable push-pull character achieved by modification of both the donor and acceptor moieties. Chemistry 2014; 21:177-90. Abstract
The push-pull character of a series of donor-bithienyl-acceptor compounds has been tuned by adopting triphenylamine or 1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidine as a donor and B(2,6-Me2 -4-RC6 H2)2 (R=Me, C6 F5 or 3,5-(CF3)2 C6 H3) or B[2,4,6-(CF3 )3 C6 H2]2 as an acceptor. Ir-catalyzed C-H borylation was utilized in the derivatization of the boryl acceptors and the tetramethyljulolidine donor. The donor and acceptor strengths were evaluated by electrochemical and photophysical measurements. In solution, the compound with the strongest acceptor, B[2,4,6-(CF3)3 C6 H2]2 ((FMes)2 B), has strongly quenched emission, while all other compounds show efficient green to red (ΦF =0.80-1.00) or near-IR (NIR; ΦF =0.27-0.48) emission, depending on solvent. Notably, this study presents the first examples of efficient NIR emission from three-coordinate boron compounds. Efficient solid-state red emission was observed for some derivatives, and interesting aggregation-induced emission of the (FMes)2 B-containing compound was studied. Moreover, each compound showed a strong and clearly visible response to fluoride addition, with either a large emission-color change or turn-on fluorescence.
