Dihydrogen bonding in complex (PP3)RuH(η(1)-BH4) featuring two proton-accepting hydride sites: experimental and theoretical studies

Thermodynamic Hydricity of Small Borane Clusters and Polyhedral closo-Boranes

Thermodynamic hydricity (HDA^MeCN) determined as Gibbs free energy (ΔG°[H]⁻) of the H⁻ detachment reaction in acetonitrile (MeCN) was assessed for 144 small borane clusters (up to 5 boron atoms), polyhedral closo-boranes dianions [B_nH_n]²⁻, and their lithium salts Li₂[B_nH_n] (n = 5–17) by DFT method [M06/6-311++G(d,p)] taking into account non-specific solvent effect (SMD model). Thermodynamic hydricity values of diborane B₂H₆ (HDA^MeCN = 82.1 kcal/mol) and its dianion [B₂H₆]²⁻ (HDA^MeCN = 40.9 kcal/mol for Li₂[B₂H₆]) can be selected as border points for the range of borane clusters’ reactivity. Borane clusters with HDA^MeCN below 41 kcal/mol are strong hydride donors capable of reducing CO₂ (HDA^MeCN = 44 kcal/mol for HCO₂⁻), whereas those with HDA^MeCN over 82 kcal/mol, predominately neutral boranes, are weak hydride donors and less prone to hydride transfer than to proton transfer (e.g., B₂H₆, B₄H₁₀, B₅H₁₁, etc.). The HDA^MeCN values of closo-boranes are found to directly depend on the coordination number of the boron atom from which hydride detachment and stabilization of quasi-borinium cation takes place. In general, the larger the coordination number (CN) of a boron atom, the lower the value of HDA^MeCN.

Synthesis, structural properties and reactivity of ruthenocene-based pincer Pd(ii) tetrahydroborate

Non-covalent interactions determine the structure, crystal packing and reactivity of isolated ruthenocene-based pincer Pd(ii) complexes. Bifurcate dihydrogen-bonded complexes are active intermediates of tetrahydroborate alcoholysis.

Computational investigation of the control of the thermodynamics and microkinetics of the reductive amination reaction by solvent coordination and a co-catalyst

Amines are among the most important and frequently used chemical compounds due to their biological activity and a wide range of applications in industry. Reductive amination reactions are an efficient and facile route to synthesize long chain amines from sustainable sources by using a different available aldehydes and ketones, and a large variety of amines including primary, secondary and tertiary forms. The pathway of the reaction process is critically dependent on reaction parameters such as the pH of the reaction medium, choice of solvent (explicitly coordinating solvent) and process conditions. These parameters are affecting the reaction performance and the selectivity but are still not fully rationalized. Here, we investigate the microkinetics and thermodynamics of the individual steps of the reductive amination reaction by exploring the systems' parameters. Explicit water coordination to the aldehyde leads to a stepwise rather than concerted nucleophilic addition with a lower activation barrier by 6-10 kcal mol-1. At low pH, the pathway is changed by a direct protonation of the amine substrate. This protonation does not strongly affect the kinetics of the reaction, but the thermodynamic equilibria. The presence of an acid as a co-catalyst leads to the formation of an iminium intermediate and this drives the reaction forward. Thus, the presence of an acid as a co-catalyst clearly renders this pathway the thermodynamically preferred one. Consequently, altering the reaction parameters does not only influence the reaction kinetics, but also the thermodynamic profile of the pathways in all cases. Further understanding of the reaction dynamics is essential to develop a microkinetic model of the reaction to then control and engineer the process in order to rationally design routes to tailor-made products.

Two pathways of proton transfer reaction to (triphos)Cu(η(1)-BH4) via a dihydrogen bond [triphos = 1,1,1-tris(diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethane]

The interaction of the η(1)-tetrahydroborate copper(i) complex (triphos)Cu(η(1)-BH4) () with proton donors [CF3CH2OH (TFE), (CF3)2CHOH (HFIP), (CF3)3COH (PFTB), PhOH, p-NO2C6H4OH (PNP), p-NO2C6H4N[double bond, length as m-dash]NC6H4OH (PNAP), CF3OH] was a subject of a combined IR spectroscopic and theoretical investigation. Spectral (Δν) and thermodynamic (ΔH) parameters of dihydrogen bond (DHB) formation were determined experimentally. The terminal hydride ligand (characterized by the basicity factor Ej(BH) = 0.87 ± 0.01) is found to be a site of proton transfer which begins with nucleophilic substitution of BH4(-) by the alcohol oxygen atom on the copper center (BH pathway). The activation barrier computed for (CF3)2CHOH in CH2Cl2 - ΔG = 20.6 kcal mol(-1) - is in good agreement with the experimental value (ΔG = 20.0 kcal mol(-1)). An abnormal dependence of the reaction rate on the proton donor strength found experimentally in dichloromethane is explained computationally on the basis of the variation of the structural and energetic details of this process with the proton donor strength. In the second reaction mechanism found (CuH pathway), DHB complexes with the initial ROH coordination to the bridging hydride lead to B-Hbr bond cleavage with BH3 elimination. "Copper assistance" via the CuO interaction is not involved. This mechanism can be evoked to explain the occurrence of proton transfer in coordinating solvents.

Hydrogen and Dihydrogen Bonds in the Reactions of Metal Hydrides

The dihydrogen bond-an interaction between a transition-metal or main-group hydride (M-H) and a protic hydrogen moiety (H-X)-is arguably the most intriguing type of hydrogen bond. It was discovered in the mid-1990s and has been intensively explored since then. Herein, we collate up-to-date experimental and computational studies of the structural, energetic, and spectroscopic parameters and natures of dihydrogen-bonded complexes of the form M-H···H-X, as such species are now known for a wide variety of hydrido compounds. Being a weak interaction, dihydrogen bonding entails the lengthening of the participating bonds as well as their polarization (repolarization) as a result of electron density redistribution. Thus, the formation of a dihydrogen bond allows for the activation of both the MH and XH bonds in one step, facilitating proton transfer and preparing these bonds for further transformations. The implications of dihydrogen bonding in different stoichiometric and catalytic reactions, such as hydrogen exchange, alcoholysis and aminolysis, hydrogen evolution, hydrogenation, and dehydrogenation, are discussed.
