Divalent heteroleptic ytterbium complexes--effective catalysts for intermolecular styrene hydrophosphination and hydroamination

Ytterbium(II) Complex-Catalyzed Selective Single and Double Hydrophosphination of 1,3-Enynes

1,3-Enynes with conjugated alkene and alkyne moieties are attractive building blocks in synthetic chemistry. However, neither 4,1-hydrophosphination nor dihydrophosphination of 1,3-enynes has been reported. In this paper, the divalent ytterbium and calcium amide complexes supported by silaimine-functionalized cyclopentadienyl ligands (C5Me4-Si(L)=NR) were developed, which successfully catalyzed the efficient single and double hydrophosphination of 1,3-enynes with diarylphosphines. The hydrophosphination reactions selectively produced homoallenyl phosphines and (E)-propenylene diphosphines, respectively. This work demonstrated the potential of hemilabile silaimine-Cp ligands in the supporting the efficient and selective rare- and alkaline-earth catalysts.

Alpha-metalated N,N-dimethylbenzylamine rare-earth metal complexes and their catalytic applications

This perspective summarizes our group's extensive research in the realm of organometallic lanthanide complexes, while also placing the catalytic reactions supported by these species within the context of known lanthanide catalysis worldwide, with a specific focus on phosphorus-based catalytic reactions such as intermolecular hydrophosphination and hydrophosphinylation. α-Metalated N,N-dimethylbenzylamine ligands have been utilized to generate homoleptic lanthanide complexes, which have subsequently proven to be highly active lanthanum-based catalysts. The main goal of our research program has been to enhance the catalytic efficiency of lanthanum-based complexes, which began with initial successes in the stoichiometric synthesis of organometallic lanthanide complexes and utilization of these species in catalytic hydrophosphination reactions. Not only have these species supported traditional lanthanide catalysis, such as the hydrophosphination of heterocumulenes like carbodiimides, isocyanates, and isothiocyanates, but they have also been effective for a plethora of catalytic reactions tested thus far, including the hydrophosphinylation and hydrophosphorylation of nitriles, hydrophosphination and hydrophosphinylation of alkynes and alkenes, and the heterodehydrocoupling of silanes and amines. Each of these catalytic transformations is meritorious in its own right, offering new synthetic routes to generate organic scaffolds with enhanced functionality while concurrently minimizing both waste generation and energy consumption. Objectives: We aim for the research summary presented herein to inspire and encourage other researchers to investigate f-element based stoichiometric and catalytic reactions. Our efforts in this field began with the recognition that potassium salts of benzyldimethylamine preferred deprotonation at the α-position, rather than the ortho-position, and we wondered if this regiochemistry would be retained in the formation of lanthanide complexes. The pursuit of this simple idea led first to a series of structurally fascinating homoleptic organometallic lanthanide complexes with surprisingly good stability. Fundamental studies of the protonolysis chemistry of these complexes ultimately revealed highly versatile lanthanide-based precatalysts that have propelled a catalytic investigation spanning more than a decade. We anticipate that this summative perspective will animate the synthetic as well as biological communities to consider La(DMBA)3-based catalytic methods in the synthesis of functionalized organic scaffolds as an atom-economic, convenient, and efficient methodology. Ultimately, we envision our work making a positive impact on the advancement of novel chemical transformations and contributing to progress in various fields of science and technology.

Anti-Markovnikov Intermolecular Hydroamination of Alkenes and Alkynes: A Mechanistic View

Hydroamination, the addition of an N-H bond across a C-C multiple bond, is a reaction with a great synthetic potential. Important advances have been made in the last decades concerning catalysis of these reactions. However, controlling the regioselectivity in the amine addition toward the formation of anti-Markovnikov products (addition to the less substituted carbon) still remains a challenge, particularly in intermolecular hydroaminations of alkenes and alkynes. The goal of this review is to collect the systems in which intermolecular hydroamination of terminal alkynes and alkenes with anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity has been achieved. The focus will be placed on the mechanistic aspects of such reactions, to discern the step at which regioselectivity is decided and to unravel the factors that favor the anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity. In addition to the processes entailing direct addition of the amine to the C-C multiple bond, alternative pathways, involving several reactions to accomplish anti-Markovnikov regioselectivity (formal hydroamination processes), will also be discussed in this review. The catalysts gathered embrace most of the metal groups of the Periodic Table. Finally, a section discussing radical-mediated and metal-free approaches, as well as heterogeneous catalyzed processes, is also included.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Coordinated M(II) (M = Yb, Sm, Ca) Bisamides: Expanding the Limits of Intermolecular Alkene Hydrophosphination

A series of NHC-stabilized amido compounds (NHC)_nM[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂ (M = Yb(II), Sm(II), Ca(II); n = 1, 2) showed remarkable catalytic efficiency in addition of PhPH₂ and PH₃ to alkenes under mild conditions and low catalyst loading. The effect of σ-donor capacity of NHCs on catalytic activity in hydrophosphination of styrene with PhPH₂ and PH₃ was revealed. For the series of three-coordinate complexes 1-4M, a tendency to increase the catalytic activity with growth of σ-donating strength of the carbene ligand was clearly demonstrated. The complex (NHC)₂Sm[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂ (NHC = 1,3-diisopropyl-2H-imidazole-2-ylidene) (5Sm) proved to be the most efficient catalyst, which enabled hardly realizable transformations such as PhPH₂ addition across internal C═C bonds of norbornene and cis- and trans-stilbenes, providing the highest reaction rate for addition of PH₃ to styrene. Excellent regio- and chemoselectivities of alkylation of PH₃ with styrenes allow for a selective and good-yield synthesis of desired organophosphines─either primary, secondary, or tertiary. Stepwise alkylation of PH₃ with various substituted styrenes can be efficiently applied as an approach to nonsymmetric secondary phosphines. The rate equation of the addition of styrene to PH₃ promoted by 5Sm was found: rate = k[styrene]¹[5Sm]¹.

π-Carbazolyl supported bis(alkyl) complexes of Sc, Y and La for α-olefin polymerization and hydrogenation

A series of new half-sandwich bis(alkyl) rare-earth metal complexes coordinated by a sterically demanding 1,3,6,8-tetra-tert-butyl-carbazol-9-yl ligand [tBu₄Carb]La(CH₂C₆H₅)₂(THF) (1-La), [tBu₄Carb]Ln(o-NMe₂C₆H₄CH₂)₂ (Ln = Sc (2-Sc), Y (2-Y), La (2-La), [tBu₄Carb]Ln(CH₂SiMe₃)₂(THF) (Ln = Sc (3-Sc), Y (3-Y)), were synthesized. 1-La, 2-La, and 2-Y were prepared by an alkane elimination protocol, while 2-Sc, 3-Sc, and 3-Y became accessible only when salt metathesis reactions of tBu₄CarbK with R₂Ln(THF)_n⁺[BPh₄]^- were employed. X-ray analysis revealed that in all complexes the carbazolyl ligand exhibits π-coordination with metal ions. 2-Sc and 3-Sc when activated with [Ph₃C][B(C₆F₅)₄] demonstrate excellent activity in α-olefin (octene-1, nonene-1, decene-1 and 1,1-diphenyl-but-1-ene) polymerization. When H₂ was used as a chain transfer agent (1 bar, rt) in the presence of 3-Sc/[Ph₃C][B(C₆F₅)₄] or 2-Y, 2-La olefin hydrogenation occurred with quantitative conversion.

Recent advances in the carbon-phosphorus (C-P) bond formation from unsaturated compounds by s- and p-block metals

Researchers around the globe have witnessed several breakthroughs in s- and p-block metal chemistry. Over the past few years, several applications in catalysis associated with these main group metals have been established, and owing to their abundance and low cost and they have proved to be essential alternatives to transition metal catalysts. In this review, we present a detailed discussion on the catalytic addition of P-H bonds from various phosphine reagents to multiple bonds of unsaturated substrates for the synthesis of organophosphorus compounds with C-P bonds promoted by various s- and p-block metal catalysts, as published in the last decade.

Effect of Substituents of Cerium Pyrazolates and Pyrrolates on Carbon Dioxide Activation

Homoleptic ceric pyrazolates (pz) Ce(RR’pz)₄ (R = R’ = tBu; R = R’ = Ph; R = tBu, R’ = Me) were synthesized by the protonolysis reaction of Ce[N(SiHMe₂)₂]₄ with the corresponding pyrazole derivative. The resulting complexes were investigated in their reactivity toward CO₂, revealing a significant influence of the bulkiness of the substituents on the pyrazolato ligands. The efficiency of the CO₂ insertion was found to increase in the order of tBu₂pz < Ph₂pz < tBuMepz < Me₂pz. For comparison, the pyrrole-based ate complexes [Ce₂(pyr)₆(µ-pyr)₂(thf)₂][Li(thf)₄]₂ (pyr = pyrrolato) and [Ce(cbz)₄(thf)₂][Li(thf)₄] (cbz = carbazolato) were obtained via protonolysis of the cerous ate complex Ce[N(SiHMe₂)₂]₄Li(thf) with pyrrole and carbazole, respectively. Treatment of the pyrrolate/carbazolate complexes with CO₂ seemed promising, but any reversibility could not be observed.

Hydrophosphination using [GeCl{N(SiMe3)2}3] as a pre-catalyst

Transformations catalyzed by germanium are scarce, with examples mainly limited to widely catalyzed processes such as polymerisation of lactide and hydroboration of carbonyls. Reported is the first example of hydrophosphination using a germanium pre-catalyst, yielding anti-Markovnikov products when diphenylphosphine is reacted with styrenes or internal alkynes at room temperature.

Ln(ii) and Ca(ii) NCsp3N pincer type diarylmethanido complexes – promising catalysts for C–C and C–E (E = Si, P, N, S) bond formation

The first examples of Ln(ii) (Ln = Yb, Sm) and Ca [NC_sp3N] pincer type diarylmethanido complexes were synthesized and successfully used as efficient and selective precatalyst for intermolecular C–C and C–E bond formation.

Alternative (κ1-N:η6-arene vs.κ2-N,N) coordination of a sterically demanding amidinate ligand: are size and electronic structure of the Ln ion decisive factors?

The amine elimination reaction of equimolar amounts of ansa-bis(amidine) C₆H₄-1,2-{NC(tBu)NH(2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃)}₂ (L¹H) and [(Me₃Si)₂N]₂Yb(THF)₂ affords a bis(amidinate) Yb^II complex [C₆H₄-1,2-{NC(tBu)N(2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃)}₂]Yb(THF) (1) in 68% yield. Complex 1 features a rather rare η¹-amido:η⁶-arene coordination of both amidinate fragments to the Yb^II ion, resulting in the formation of a bent bis(arene) structure. Oxidation of 1 by I₂ regardless of the molar ratio of reagents (2 : 1 or 1 : 1) leads to the formation of the Yb^III species [{(2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃)[double bond, length as m-dash]NC(tBu)NH}-C₆H₄-1,2-{NC(tBu)N(2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃)}]YbI₂(THF)₂ (2) in which only one amidinate fragment is coordinated to the ytterbium ion in κ²-N,N'-chelating coordination mode, while the second NCN fragment is protonated in the course of the reaction and is not bound to the metal ion. The outcome of the salt metathesis reaction of LaCl₃ with lithium amidinates [C₆H₄-1,2-{NC(tBu)N(2,6-R₂C₆H₃)}₂Li₂] (R = Me, iPr) is proven to be strongly affected by the substituent 2,6-R₂C₆H₃ on the amidinate nitrogens. When R = iPr, the salt metathesis reaction occurs smoothly and results in the formation of an ate-chloro-amidinate complex [C₆H₄-1,2-{NC(tBu)N(2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃)}₂]La(μ²-Cl)Li(THF)(μ²-Cl)₂Li(THF)₂ (3) in which the La^III ion is coordinated by both amidinate fragments in a "classic"κ²-N,N'-chelating fashion. In the case of R = Me, the reaction requires prolonged heating for completion. Moreover, the salt metathesis reaction is accompanied by the fragmentation of the ligand and affords a trinuclear chloro-amidinate complex [C₆H₄-1,2-{NC(tBu)N(2,6-Me₂C₆H₃)}₂]La{[(tBu)C(N-2,6-Me₂C₆H₃)₂]La(THF)}₂(μ²-Cl)₄(μ³-Cl)₂ (4) containing one dianionic ansa-bis(amidinate) and two monoanionic [(tBu)C(N-2,6-Me₂C₆H₃)₂] amidinate fragments. DFT calculations are conducted to determine the factor that governs this change in coordination mode and, in particular, the effect of the metal oxidation state.

Thermally Stable Ln(II) and Ca(II) Bis(benzhydryl) Complexes: Excellent Precatalysts for Intermolecular Hydrophosphination of C-C Multiple Bonds

A series of Ln(II) and Ca(II) bis(alkyl) complexes with bulky benzhydryl ligands, [( p- tBu-C₆H₄)₂CH]₂M(L _n) (M = Sm, L = DME, n = 2 (1); M = Sm, Yb, Ca, L = TMEDA, n = 1 (2, 3, 4), were synthesized by the salt-metathesis reaction of MI₂(THF) _n ( n = 0-2) and [( p- tBu-C₆H₄)₂CH]^-Na⁺. In complex 1, the benzhydryl ligands are bound to the metal center in η²-coordination mode. Unlike complex 1, in isomorphous complexes 3 and 4, due to the coordination unsaturation of the metal center, the both benzhydryl ligands coordinate to the metal in η³-fashion. In complex 2, one ligand is η³-coordinated while the second one is η⁴-coordinated to the Sm(II) ion. Complexes 2-4 demonstrated unprecedented thermal stability: no evidence of decomposition was observed after heating their solutions in C₆D₆ at 100 °C during 72 h. Complex 1 behaves differently: thermolysis in C₆D₆ solution at 75 °C results in total decomposition in 8 h. Addition of DME promotes decomposition of 2-4 and makes it feasible at 40 °C. Complexes 1-4 demonstrated high catalytic activity and excellent regio- and chemoselectivities in intermolecular hydrophosphination of double and triple C-C bonds with both primary and secondary phosphines. Complexes 2 and 3 enable addition of PhPH₂ toward the internal C═C bond of Z- and E-stilbenes with 100% conversion under mild conditions. Double sequential hydrophosphination of phenylacetylene with Ph₂PH and PhPH₂ was realized due to the application of Yb(II) complex as a catalyst.

Catalytic Strategy for Regioselective Arylethylamine Synthesis

A mild, modular, and practical catalytic system for the synthesis of the highly privileged phenethylamine pharmacophore is reported. Using a unique combination of organic catalysts to promote the transfer of electrons and hydrogen atoms, this system performs direct hydroarylation of vinyl amine derivatives with a wide range of aryl halides (including aryl chlorides). This general and highly chemoselective protocol delivers a broad range of arylethylamine products with complete regiocontrol. The utility of this process is highlighted by its scalability and the modular synthesis of an array of bioactive small molecules.

Hydrophosphination of alkenes and alkynes with primary phosphines catalyzed by zirconium complexes bearing aminophenolato ligands

Zirconium complexes stabilized by amine-bridged bis(phenolato) ligands showed good activity and chemo-selectivity in catalyzing intermolecular hydrophosphination of C-C multiple bonds with primary phosphines under mild conditions. A broad range of alkenes and alkynes underwent a mono-addition reaction with phenylphosphine, which generated secondary phosphines in 39-99% yields and >7 : 1 selectivity (over double hydrophosphination).

Use of organolanthanides in the catalytic intermolecular hydrophosphination and hydroamination of multiple C-C bonds

This review covers recent achievements in the intermolecular hydrophosphination and hydroamination of alkenes, dienes and alkynes catalyzed by organolanthanides.

Intramolecular alkene hydroamination and degradation of amidines: divergent behavior of rare earth metal amidinate intermediates

The methods for catalytic intramolecular alkene hydroamination and degradation of amidines have been established. Furthermore, a tandem reconstruction/cyclization of amidines has also been developed.

Calcium, Strontium and Barium Homogeneous Catalysts for Fine Chemicals Synthesis

The large alkaline earths (Ae), calcium, strontium and barium, have in the past 15 years yielded a brand new generation of heteroleptic molecular catalysts for the production of fine chemicals. However, the integrity of these complexes is often plagued by ligand redistribution equilibria in solution. This personal account retraces the paths followed in our research group towards the design of stable heteroleptic alkalino-earth complexes, including the use of intramolecular noncovalent Ae···H-Si and Ae···F-C interactions. Their implementation as homogenous precatalysts for reactions such as the intramolecular and intermolecular hydroamination and hydrophosphination of activated alkenes, the hydrophosphonylation of ketones, and the dehydrogenative coupling of amines and hydrosilanes that enable the efficient and controlled formations of CP, CN, or SiN σ-bonds, is presented in a synthetic perspective that highlights their overall outstanding catalytic performance.

Parameters for the RM1 Quantum Chemical Calculation of Complexes of the Trications of Thulium, Ytterbium and Lutetium

The RM1 quantum chemical model for the calculation of complexes of Tm(III), Yb(III) and Lu(III) is advanced. Subsequently, we tested the models by fully optimizing the geometries of 126 complexes. We then compared the optimized structures with known crystallographic ones from the Cambridge Structural Database. Results indicate that, for thulium complexes, the accuracy in terms of the distances between the lanthanide ion and its directly coordinated atoms is about 2%. Corresponding results for ytterbium and lutetium are both 3%, levels of accuracy useful for the design of lanthanide complexes, targeting their countless applications.

Recent developments in alkene hydro-functionalisation promoted by homogeneous catalysts based on earth abundant elements: formation of C-N, C-O and C-P bond

This Perspective article provides an overview of the recent advancements in the field of intra- and inter-molecular C-N, C-O and C-P bond formation by hydroamination, hydroalkoxylation, hydrophosphination, hydrophosphonylation or hydrophosphinylation of unactivated alkenes, including allenes, 1,3-dienes and strained alkenes, promoted by (chiral) homogeneous catalysts based on earth abundant elements of the s and p blocks, the first row transition metals and the rare-earth metals. The relevant literature from 2009 until late 2014 has been covered.

Amido Ln(II) Complexes Coordinated by Bi- and Tridentate Amidinate Ligands: Nonconventional Coordination Modes of Amidinate Ligands and Catalytic Activity in Intermolecular Hydrophosphination of Styrenes and Tolane

Heteroleptic Ln(II) and Ca(II) amides [tBuC(NC6H3-iPr2-2,6)2]MN(SiMe3)2(THF) (M = Yb (1Yb), Ca (1Ca)), [2-MeOC6H4NC(tBu)N(C6H3-iPr2-2,6)]LnN(SiMe3)2(THF) (Ln = Sm (2Sm), Yb (2Yb)), and [2-Ph2P(O)C6H4NC(tBu)N(C6H3-Me2-2,6)]YbN(SiMe3)2(THF) (3Yb) coordinated by bi- and tridentate amidinate ligands were obtained by the amine elimination reactions of M[N(SiMe3)2](THF)2 (M = Yb, Sm, Ca) with parent amidines in good yields. Complex [tBuC(NC6H3-iPr2-2,6)2]SmN(SiMe3)2 can be obtained only by a salt metathesis reaction of [tBuC(NC6H3-2,6-iPr2)2]SmI(THF)2 with NaN(SiMe3)2. Unlike 1Yb and 1Ca in 1Sm the amidinate ligand is coordinated to metal ion in κ(1)-amido:η(6)-arene fashion preventing THF coordination. The derivatives of tridentate amidinate ligands bearing pendant donor 2-MeOC6H4 or 2-Ph2P(O)C6H4N groups feature nonconventional κ(1)-N,κ(2)-O,η(6)-arene coordination mode. Complexes 1Ca, 1Sm, 1Yb, 2Sm, 2Yb, and 3Yb proved to be efficient catalysts for styrene hydrophosphination with PhPH2 and Ph2PH. In styrene hydrophosphination with PhPH2 all the catalysts perform excellent chemoselectivity and afford a monoaddition product-secondary phosphine (PhCH2CH2)PhPH. Moreover, all the catalysts perform hydrophosphination reactions regioselectively with exclusive formation of the anti-Markovnikov addition product. Within the series of complexes coordinated by the same amidinate ligand catalytic activity decreases in the following order 1Ca ≥ 1Sm>1Yb. The turnover frequencies were in the range of TOF ≈ 0.3-0.7 h(-1). However, application of tridentate amidinate ligand allowed one to increase catalytic activity significantly: for 2Sm TOF was found to be 8.3 h(-1). For the addition of PhPH2 to para-substituted styrenes catalyzed by 2Sm it was found that electron-withdrawing substituents (Cl, F) do not affect the reaction rate while electron-donating groups (tBu, OMe) noticeably slow down the reaction.

Extremely bulky amide ligands in main group chemistry

The development of extremely sterically demanding, monodentate amide ligands facilitates the isolation of main group species with new and highly reactive coordination modes. An outstanding feature of these ligands is the ability to tune their steric demands. Reactivity investigations highlight the potential for small molecule activation chemistry and catalysis for these compounds.

Synthesis and molecular structures of divalent bridged bis(guanidinate) europium complexes and their application in intermolecular hydrophosphination of alkenes and alkynes

Bis(amido) rare-earth complexes coordinated by tridentate amidinate ligand: synthesis, structure and catalytic activity in the polymerization of isoprene and rac-lactide

Rare-earth bis(amides) {2-[Ph₂Р(O)]C₆H₄NC(tBu)N(2,6-Me₂C₆H₃)}Ln(N(SiMe₃)₂)₂ (Ln = Y, Nd, La) coordinated by tridentate amidinate ligand were synthesized, structurally characterized and evaluated as catalysts for isoprene and rac-lactide polymerizations.

Metallacyclic yttrium alkyl and hydrido complexes: synthesis, structures and catalytic activity in intermolecular olefin hydrophosphination and hydroamination

Metallacyclic neutral and ionic yttrium alkyl complexes coordinated by a dianionic ene-diamido ligand ([2,6-iPr2C6H3NC(Me)=C(Me)NC6H3iPr2-2,6] = L(1)) [L(1)]Y(CH2SiMe3)(THF)2 (2), {[L(1)]Y(CH2SiMe3)2}(-){Li(THF)4}(+) (3), [L(1)]Y(OEt2)(μ-Me)2Li(TMEDA) (4) were synthesized using a salt-metathesis approach starting from the related chloro complex [L(1)]Y(THF)2(μ-Cl)2Li(THF)2 (1) in 70, 85 and 72% yields respectively. The reactions of 2 with H2 or PhSiH3 afford the dimeric hydride {[L(1)]Y(THF)(μ-H)}2(μ-THF) (5) containing two μ-bridging hydrido and one μ-bridging THF ligands (91 and 85% yields). The X-ray studies of complexes 2, 3 and 5 revealed η(2)-coordination of the C=C fragment of an ene-diamido ligand to a Y cation. DFT calculations were carried out to give an insight into the metal-ligand bonding and especially the interaction between the metal and the ene-diamido ligand. The observed bonding of the ene-diamido fragment is found to reflect the acidity of the metal center in the complex that is partially overcome by a better donation from the double bond (better overlap with an empty d orbital at the yttrium center). The treatment of complex 4 with DME resulted in the C-O bond cleavage of DME and afforded a three nuclear methoxide oxide complex [{[L(1)]Y}3(μ(2)-OMe)3(μ(3)-O)](2-)[Li(DME)3](+)2 (6). Complexes 2, 3, 5 and 7 proved to be efficient precatalysts for the intermolecular hydrophosphination of styrene, 4-vinylpyridine, and 1-nonene with PhPH2 and Ph2PH as well as hydroamination of styrene and pyrrolidine.
