Abstract
In this review article, the synthesis, characterization and physico-chemical properties of the organic donor-acceptor complexes are highlighted and a special emphasis has been placed on developing them as semiconducting materials. The electron-rich molecules, i. e., donors have been broadly grouped in three categories, namely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrogen heterocycles and sulphur containing aromatic donors. The reactions of these classes of the donors with the acceptors, namely tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), tetracyanoethylene (TCNE), tetracyanobenzene (TCNB), benzoquinone, pyromellitic dianhydride and pyromellitic diimides, fullerenes, phenazine, benzothiadiazole, naphthalimide, DMAD, maleic anhydride, viologens and naphthalene diimide are described. The potential applications of the resulting DA complexes for physico-electronic purposes are also included. The theoretical investigation of many of these products with a view to rationalise their observed physico-chemical properties is also discussed.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) constructed by tetrathiafulvalene-tetrabenzoate (H4TTFTB) have been widely studied in porous materials, while the studies of other TTFTB derivatives are rare. Herein, the meta derivative of the frequently used p-H4TTFTB ligand, m-H4TTFTB, and lanthanide (Ln) metal ions (Tb3+, Er3+, and Gd3+) were assembled into three novel MOFs. Compared with the reported porous Ln-TTFTB, the resulted three-dimensional frameworks, Ln-m-TTFTB ([Ln2(m-TTFTB)(m-H2TTFTB)0.5(HCOO)(DMF)]·2DMF·3H2O), possess a more dense stacking which leads to scarce porosity. The solid-state cyclic voltammetry studies revealed that these MOFs show similar redox activity with two reversible one-electron processes at 0.21 and 0.48 V (vs. Fc/Fc+). The results of magnetic properties suggested Dy-m-TTFTB and Er-m-TTFTB exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization. Porosity was not found in these materials, which is probably due to the meta-configuration of the m-TTFTB ligand that seems to hinder the formation of pores. However, the m-TTFTB ligand has shown to be promising to construct redox-active or electrically conductive MOFs in future work.

Abstract
Near-infrared (NIR) photothermal materials hold great promise for use in several applications, particularly in photothermal therapy, diagnosis, and imaging. However, current NIR responsive materials often show narrow absorption bands and low absorption efficiency, and have long response times. Herein, we demonstrate that the NIR absorption of tetrathiafulvalene-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be tuned by redox doping and using plasmonic nanoparticles. In this work, a MOF containing redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) units and Dy-carboxylate chains was constructed, Dy-m-TTFTB. The NIR absorption of the as-synthesized Dy-m-TTFTB was further enhanced by Ag+ or I2 oxidation, transforming the neutral TTF into a TTF˙+ radical state. Interestingly, treatment with Ag+ not only generated TTF˙+ radicals, but it also formed Ag nanoparticles (NPs) in situ within the MOF pores. With both TTF˙+ radicals and Ag NPs, Ag NPs@Dy-m-TTFTB was shown to exhibit a wide range of absorption wavelengths (200–1000 nm) and also a high NIR photothermal conversion. When the system was irradiated with an 808 nm laser (energy power of 0.7 W cm−2), Ag NPs@Dy-m-TTFTB showed a sharp temperature increase of 239.8 °C. This increase was higher than that of pristine Dy-m-TTFTB (90.1 °C) or I2 treated I3−@Dy-m-TTFTB (213.0 °C). The photo-response of the redox-active metal–organic framework has been systematically tuned by incorporating plasmonic Ag nanoparticles and tetrathiafulvalene radicals, resulting in efficient near-infrared photothermal conversion materials.![]()

Abstract
Titanium-oxo clusters (TOCs) have been studied for applications in catalysis, energy storage and transfer, light emission, and so on; however, use of TOCs for the selective adsorption of dyes has not yet been reported. Herein, a TOC compound formulated as [Ti6O3(OiPr)14(TTFTC)]4 (1, TTFTC = tetrathiafulvalene-tetracarboxylate) was successfully prepared and crystallographically characterized. Compound 1 has a cyclic structure assembled by four Ti6 clusters and four rodlike TTFTC connectors. Red compound 1 self-condenses to form a black polymeric organic-inorganic hybrid material (denoted as B-1), which was characterized by various techniques. B-1 is an amorphous TiO material that is formed by the irregular condensation of 1 by the removal of alkoxyl groups. B-1 exhibits high dye adsorption efficiency toward cationic dyes with a qe value of 651.3 mg/g at 298 K for methylene blue (MB). Moreover, B-1 can be used to selectively remove MB not only from mixed cationic-anionic dye solutions but also from some mixed cationic dyes, which is related to their structures. Kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies demonstrated that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich model show a good fit to the experimental data. The adsorption process involves an exothermic and entropy decreasing process. In addition, dye-adsorbed B-1 can be further used as a photocurrent-responsive material. The work opens up a new field for the application of TOCs in the selective adsorption and removal of dyes.

Abstract
Understanding the role of non-covalent interactions that dictate and fine-tune the direction of self-assembly of functional molecules is crucial for developing stimuli responsive materials. Herein, we systematically designed and synthesized viologen derivatives with hydrophobic dodecyl chains and alkyl carboxylic acid functionalities. The complementary electronic and electrostatic counterpart of viologens was chosen as pyranine. Viologens comprising of a hydrophobic dodecyl chain on one terminal and hydrogen bonding alkyl carboxylic acid on the other (V1 and V2) underwent aggregation to a varying extent upon interaction with pyranine. The length of the alkyl carboxylic acid had a greater impact on the nature and morphology of the aggregates. Control molecules (V3 and V4) in which 4,4'-bipyridine was symmetrically quaternized with alkyl carboxylic acids did not aggregate upon interaction with pyranine. The delicate balance existing between the hydrophobicity of the dodecyl chains and the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction between the alkyl carboxylic acid groups in V1 or V2 of the corresponding charge transfer (CT) complexes was instrumental in driving the aggregation. The CT aggregates of [V1-Pyr] and [V2-Pyr] exhibited excellent stability in water which disaggregated at physiological pH. We emphasize on the importance of synergy between hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interactions in reinforcing each other to drive the supramolecular aggregation of the CT complexes. Such pH dependent CT aggregates are of importance as scaffolds in pH controlled drug release. In the present study, the CT aggregates were evaluated for adenosine nucleotide recognition in water; [V1-Pyr] and [V2-Pyr] exhibited selective response towards adenosine monophosphate via deprotonation induced dissolution of aggregates in water leading to emission enhancement.

Abstract
Using the redox-active tetrathiafulvalene tetrabenzoate (TTFTB4- ) as the linker, a series of stable and porous rare-earth metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs), [RE9 (μ3 -OH)13 (μ3 -O)(H2 O)9 (TTFTB)3 ] (1-RE, where RE=Y, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) were constructed. The RE9 (μ3 -OH)13 (μ3 -O) (H2 O)9 ](CO2 )12 clusters within 1-RE act as segregated single-molecule magnets (SMMs) displaying slow relaxation. Interestingly, upon oxidation by I2 , the S=0 TTFTB4- linkers of 1-RE were converted into S= 1 / 2 TTFTB.3- radical linkers which introduced exchange-coupling between SMMs and modulated the relaxation. Furthermore, the SMM property can be restored by reduction in N,N-dimethylformamide. These results highlight the advantage of MOFs in the construction of redox-switchable SMMs.

Abstract
Background The realization of multifunction in one bulk material is fascinating for developing a new generation of devices. Quaternary phosphorus salts were seldom utilized as templates in haloargentate systems, and the hybridization of alkyl(triphenyl)phosphonium with halometallate will be a good strategy for the development of multifunctional material, especially for biological material. Methods Under the template of (triphenyl)phosphonium-based quaternary phosphorus salts with different spacer lengths (n=2, 3, 4), three bromoargentate hybrids were constructed via the solution method, ie, (1,2-DBTPP)(Ag2Br4) (1), {(1,3-DBTPP)2(Ag7Br11)]∙CH3CN∙H2O} n (2), and {[(1,4-DBTPP)(Ag5Br7)](CH3CN)2∙H2O} n (3) (1,2-DBTPP2+=ethane-1,2-diylbis (triphenyl)phosphonium, 1,3-DBTPP2+=propane-1,3-diylbis (triphenyl)phosphonium, 1,4-DBTPP2+=butane-1,4-diylbis (triphenyl)phosphonium)). Results The (Ag7Br11) n 4n- chain in 2 is a new type of 1-D bromoargentate chain constructed from cubane-like Ag4Br4 nodes, AgBr4 tetrahedrons and AgBr3 triangles. Interestingly, by elongating spacer n from 2 to 4, argentophilicity interactions are weakened, and the hydrogen bonds are strengthened. Consequently, their water stabilities and photocurrents are improved, in which the Ag-4d/Br-4p to π* anti-bonding orbital of the quaternary phosphorus transfer is facilitated. Furthermore, the greenish blue emissions can be detected. Finally, high inhabitation rates against Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans can be observed in 2 and 3. Conclusion In all experiments, by elongating the spacer lengths of quaternary phosphorus salts, multifunctions were integrated in the quaternary phosphorus/bromoargentate hybrids, including greenish blue luminescence, repeatable photocurrent responses and durable antimicrobial activities with enhanced water stability. This work could provide a theoretical guide for the design of new biologically multifunctional materials.

Abstract
The mononuclear single-molecule magnet (SMM) [Dy(tta)3(L)]⋅C6H14 (1) (where tta− = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate and L = 4,5-bis(propylthio)-tetrathiafulvalene-2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole-methyl-2-pyridine) was studied by spectro-electrochemistry. The resulting electronic spectra of the three oxidation states 1, 1+∙, and 12+ were rationalized by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations starting from the DFT optimized structures. The modulation of the magnetic anisotropy of the DyIII center upon oxidation was also inspected at the Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF) level of calculation.

Abstract
The fabrication of stable, highly conductive molecular nano-junctions is one of the main research goals in the field of molecular electronics. In this paper we report on the self-assembly and functional characterisation of highly conductive molecular wires, based on mixed-metal polynuclear complexes, at the surface of a transparent conductive oxide. The adopted synthetic approach involves metal-coordination reactions on oxide surfaces, pre-functionalised with a monolayer of terpyridine moieties that are used as anchoring sites for the integration of ditopic, redox-active ruthenium-bisterpyridine molecules through iron(ii) centres. By the stepwise iteration of the iron-coordination reaction, molecular wires of the desired length can be prepared, which alternate iron and ruthenium centres in the wire backbone. The stepwise assembly of the wires at the transparent conductive oxide surface was characterised by means of UV-Vis spectroscopy and, at the nanoscale, by means of ToF-SIMS measurements. The electrical characteristics of the wires were obtained by the liquid-metal eutectic-gain nano-junction technique, with results that show good electron transport capabilities along the wires. The demonstrated feasibility of the integration of these metal-polypyridinic, redox-active, conductive wires at the surface of a transparent and conductive oxide, and the evidence for good electrical conduction indicates prospective applications in the field of nanoscale molecular optoelectronics.

Abstract
We successfully prepared and crystallographically characterized the first intermolecular charge-transfer (CT)-based vapochromic compound, (EV)(H3O)2[Fe(CN)6] (1-Wet, EV2+: 1,1'-diethyl-4,4'-bipyridine-1,1'-diium), an ethyl viologen-containing CT salt. 1-Wet, which is purple in color, is transformed into a brown powder (1-Dry) upon exposure to methanol vapor, drying over silica gel, or heating; 1-Dry returns to 1-Wet upon exposure to water vapor. These color changes are induced by hydration and dehydration, and gravimetric analyses suggest that 1-Dry is the dehydrated form of 1-Wet, namely, (EV)(H)2[Fe(CN)6]. Interestingly, desorption of water molecules from the oxonium ions in 1-Wet produces isolated protons (H+) that remain in 1-Dry as counter cations. Powder X-ray crystal structure analysis of 1-Dry reveals the presence of very short contacts between the nitrogen atoms of adjacent [Fe(CN)6]4- anions in the crystal. The isolated protons are trapped between the nitrogen atoms of cyanido ligands to form very short N···H···N hydrogen bonds. A detailed comparison of the crystal structures of 1-Wet and 1-Dry reveals that hydration and dehydration induce changes in crystal packing and intermolecular CT interactions, resulting in reversible color changes.

Abstract
A series of electronically active viologen dications (RV) with tunable substituent groups were utilized to hybridize with [Ge4S10]4- (T2 cluster) to form the hybrids of T2@RV. These hybrids exhibited variable supermolecular assembly formation, tunable optical absorption properties, and different photoelectric response under the influence of different RV dications. Raman testing and time-dependent photocurrent response indicated that the photosensitivity and photostability of T2@RV could be integrated while choosing suitable RV dications. Current research provides a general method to build a tunable hybrid system based on crystalline metal chalcogenide compounds through the replacement of photoinactive cationic organic templates with photoactive ones with different substituent groups.

Abstract
The synthesis of a π-extended bridging ligand with both redox-active tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) units, namely, bis(1,10-phenanthro[5,6-b])tetrathiafulvalene (BPTTF), was realized via a self-coupling reaction. Using this ligand and Ru(tbbpy)2Cl2 (tbbpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine), the dinuclear ruthenium(II) compound [{Ru(tbbpy)2}2(BPTTF)](PF6)4 (1) has been obtained by microwave-assisted synthesis. Structural characterization of 1 revealed a crossed arrangement of the TTF moieties on adjacent dimers within the crystal structure. The optical and redox properties of 1 were investigated using electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and absorption spectroscopic studies combined with theoretical calculations. One exhibits a rich electrochemical behavior owing to the multiple redox-active centers. Interestingly, both the ligand BPTTF and the ruthenium compound 1 are EPR-active in the solid state owing to intramolecular charge-transfer processes. The results demonstrate that the TTF-annulated bis(phen) ligand is a promising bridging ligand to construct oligomeric or polymeric metal complexes with multiple redox-active centers.
