Synthesis of V/Fe/S Clusters Using Vanadium(III) Thiolate Complexes Bearing a Phenoxide-Based Tridentate Ligand

Single-Step Sulfur Insertions into Iron Carbide Carbonyl Clusters: Unlocking the Synthetic Door to FeMoco Analogues

The one-step syntheses, X-ray structures, and spectroscopic characterization of synthetic iron clusters, bearing either inorganic sulfides or thiolate with interstitial carbide motifs, are reported. Treatment of iron carbide carbonyl clusters [Fe_n (μ_n -C)(CO)_m ]^x (n=5,6; m=15,16; x=0,-2) with electrophilic sulfur sources (S₂ Cl₂ , S₈ ) results in the formation of several μ₄ -S dimers of clusters, and moreover, iron-sulfide-(sulfocarbide) clusters. The core sulfocarbide unit {C-S}^4- serves as a structural model for a proposed intermediate in the radical S-adenosyl-L-methionine biogenesis of the M-cluster. Furthermore, the electrophilic sulfur strategy has been extended to provide the first ever thiolato-iron-carbide complex: an analogous reaction with toluylsulfenyl chloride affords the cluster [Fe₅ (μ₅ -C)(SC₇ H₇ )(CO)₁₃ ]^- . The strategy described herein provides a breakthrough towards developing syntheses of biomimetic iron-sulfur-carbide clusters like FeMoco.

Construction of Synthetic Models for Nitrogenase-Relevant NifB Biogenesis Intermediates and Iron-Carbide-Sulfide Clusters

The family of nitrogenase enzymes catalyzes the reduction of atmospheric dinitrogen (N2) to ammonia under remarkably benign conditions of temperature, pressure, and pH. Therefore, the development of synthetic complexes or materials that can similarly perform this reaction is of critical interest. The primary obstacle for obtaining realistic synthetic models of the active site iron-sulfur-carbide cluster (e.g., FeMoco) is the incorporation of a truly inorganic carbide. This review summarizes the present state of knowledge regarding biological and chemical (synthetic) incorporation of carbide into iron-sulfur clusters. This includes the Nif cluster of proteins and associated biochemistry involved in the endogenous biogenesis of FeMoco. We focus on the chemical (synthetic) incorporation portion of our own efforts to incorporate and modify C1 units in iron/sulfur clusters. We also highlight recent contributions from other research groups in the area toward C1 and/or inorganic carbide insertion.

Isolated Mixed-Valence Iron Vanadium Malate and Its Metal Hydrates (M = Fe2+, Cu2+, Zn2+) with Reversible and Irreversible Adsorptions for Oxygen

Isolated octanuclear iron-vanadium malate (NH₄)₃(CH₃NH₃)₃[Fe^III₂V^IV₂V^V₄O₁₁(mal)₆]·7.5H₂O (1; H₃mal = malic acid) and its family of metal hydrates M'_3n[M^II(H₂O)₂]_1.5n[Fe^III₂V^IV₂V^V₄O₁₁(mal)₆]_n·xnH₂O (2 or 2-Fe, M' = NH₄⁺, M = Fe, x = 7.5; 3 or 3-Cu, M' = K⁺, M = Cu, x = 10; 4 or 4-Zn, M' = K⁺, M = Zn, x = 6.5) have been obtained by self-assembly in water. The cluster anion [Fe₂V₆O₁₁(mal)₆]^6- (1a) shows an interesting iron bicapped-triangular-prismatic structure, which is bridged by M²⁺ hydrates (M = Fe, Cu, Zn) to construct isostructural metal organic frameworks (MOFs) 2-4. The mixed-valence vanadium systems in 1-4 were determined by theoretical bond valence calculations (BVS) and charge balance. The magnetic susceptibilities are further elucidated as high spin for Fe³⁺ in 1a and bridging Fe²⁺ in 2-Fe, respectively. A strong ferromagnetic interaction was also observed for 2-Fe at 3 K. 2-Fe, 3-Cu, and 4-Zn have similar hydrophilic channels with diameters of 6.8, 6.5, and 6.6 Å, respectively, which show obvious affinity for O₂ in comparison with no adsorption of N₂, H₂, CO₂, and CH₄ at room temperature under different pressures. Moreover, 2-Fe and 4-Zn exhibit irreversible O₂ absorptions, which may be attributed to charge transfer between O₂ and open metal sites (OMSs) formed during vacuum heating pretreatment. UV-vis and EPR spectra show a change in electronic structure of 2-Fe after O₂ adsorption. The reversible adsorption observed in 3-Cu suggests a weak interaction between O₂ and Cu²⁺ due to the Jahn-Teller effect. The properties of gas adsorption provide an insight into the performances of small molecules in the channels constructed by synthetic octanuclear model compounds, which are related to the interactions between the gas substrate and the heterometal cluster in biology.

Enhanced Reactivity of Aluminum Complexes Containing P-Bridged Biphenolate Ligands in Ring-Opening Polymerization Catalysis

Aluminum complexes containing [RP(O)(2-O-3,5-tBu₂C₆H₂)₂]²⁻ [R = tBu (3a), Ph (3b)] have been synthesized, structurally characterized, and their reactivity studied in comparison with those of their [RP(2-O-3,5-tBu₂C₆H₂)₂]²⁻ [R = tBu (2a), Ph (2b)] analogs. Treating AlMe₃ with one equiv of H₂[3a-b] in THF at 0°C affords quantitatively [3a-b]AlMe, subsequent reactions of which with benzyl alcohol in THF at 25°C generate {[3a-b]Al(μ₂-OCH₂Ph)}₂. The methyl [3a-b]AlMe and the benzyloxide {[3a-b]Al(μ₂-OCH₂Ph)}₂ are all active for catalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone and rac-lactide (rac-LA). Controlled experiments reveal that {[3a]Al(μ₂-OCH₂Ph)}₂ is competent in living polymerization. Kinetic studies indicate that [3a]AlMe, in the presence of benzyl alcohol, catalyzes ROP of rac-LA at a rate faster than [3b]AlMe and [2a]AlMe(THF) by a factor of 1.8 and 23.6, respectively, highlighting the profound reactivity enhancement in ROP catalysis by varying the P-substituents of these biphenolate complexes of aluminum.

Systematic Approach for the Construction of Niobium and Tantalum Sulfide Clusters

Treatment of the imido complexes [MCl3(NR)py2] (R = (t)Bu, 2,6-Me2C6H3; M = Nb 1, 3; Ta 2, 4) (Xyl = 2,6-Me2C6H3) with (Me3Si)2S in a 1:1 ratio afforded the new cube-type sulfide clusters [MCl(NR)py(μ3-S)]4 (R = (t)Bu, 2,6-Me2C6H3; M = Nb 5, 7; Ta 6, 8) with loss of Me3SiCl. Reactions of 5 and 6 with cyclopentadienyllithium in 1:4 ratio resulted in the rupture of the coordinative M-S bonds and the replacement of a pyridine molecule and a chlorine atom by an η(5)-cyclopentadienyl group in each metal center, affording the compounds [M(η(5)-C5H5)(N(t)Bu)(μ-S)]4 (M = Nb 9, Ta 10). These processes may develop through formation of the complexes [M4(η(5)-C5H5)2(μ-Cl)(N(t)Bu)4py2(μ3-S)2(μ-S)2](C5H5) (M = Nb 11, Ta 12), also obtained by reaction of 5 and 6 with cyclopentadienyllithium in 1:3 ratio. As further evidence, 11 and 12 led to complexes 9 and 10 by treatment with one more equivalent of the lithium reagent. The structural study of these metal sulfide clusters has been also performed by X-ray crystallography.
