Multinuclear cobalt(II)-containing heteropolytungstates: structure, magnetism, and electrochemistry

A Hexadecanuclear Cobalt-Added Tungstogermanate Containing Counter Cobalt Hydrates: Synthesis, Structure and Photocatalytic Properties

The synthesis and exploration of the properties of structurally-new polyoxometalates (POMs) has been attracting considerable research interest. In this work, a hexadecanuclear cobalt-added tungstogermanate, H₃₁(NH₄)₅Na₁₆{Co^Ⅲ(H₂O)₆}₄{[Co^Ⅱ₄(μ₃-OH)₃(PO₄)]₄(A-α-GeW₉O₃₄)₄}₂·23-H₂O (1), was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by various techniques. Compound 1 can effectively drive the heterogeneous photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction in the presence of [Ir(ppy)₂(dtbbpy)][PF₆] as the photosensitizer, with triethanolamine (TEOA) and N-Hydroxy succinimide (NHS) used as the dual sacrificial reagents. Control experiments revealed the important role of NHS in enhancing the hydrogen-evolution activities. Under optimal catalytic conditions, a hydrogen yield of 54.21 μmol was achieved after 10-h photocatalysis, corresponding to a hydrogen evolution rate of 1807.07 μmol·g^-1·h^-1. Stability studies demonstrated that catalyst 1 can be isolated and reused for three successive photocatalytic cycles with negligible decline of the H₂ yield, indicating the stability and recycling robustness of catalyst 1.

Structurally-New Hexadecanuclear Ni-Containing Silicotungstate with Catalytic Hydrogen Generation Activity

A structurally-new, carbon-free hexadecanuclear Ni-containing silicotungstate, [Ni₁₆(H₂O)₁₅(OH)₉(PO₄)₄(SiW₉O₃₄)₃]^19-, has been facilely synthesized using a one-pot, solution-based synthetic method systematically characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and several other techniques. The resulting complex works as a noble-metal-free catalyst for visible-light-driven catalytic generation of hydrogen, by coupling with a [Ir(coumarin)₂(dtbbpy)][PF₆] photosensitizer and a triethanolamine (TEOA) sacrificial electron donor. Under minimally optimized conditions, a turnover number (TON) of 842 was achieved for TBA-Ni₁₆P₄(SiW₉)₃-catalyzed hydrogen evolution system. The structural stability of TBA-Ni₁₆P₄(SiW₉)₃ catalyst under photocatalytic conditions was evaluated by the mercury-poisoning test, FT-IR, and DLS measurements. The photocatalytic mechanism was elucidated by both time-solved luminescence decay and static emission quenching measurements.

Platonic and Archimedean solids in discrete metal-containing clusters

Metal-containing clusters have attracted increasing attention over the past 2-3 decades. This intense interest can be attributed to the fact that these discrete metal aggregates, whose atomically precise structures are resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), often possess intriguing geometrical features (high symmetry, aesthetically pleasing shapes and architectures) and fascinating physical properties, providing invaluable opportunities for the intersection of different disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematical geometry and materials science. In this review, we attempt to reinterpret and connect these fascinating clusters from the perspective of Platonic and Archimedean solid characteristics, focusing on highly symmetrical and complex metal-containing (metal = Al, Ti, V, Mo, W, U, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, lanthanoids (Ln), and actinoids) high-nuclearity clusters, including metal-oxo/hydroxide/chalcogenide clusters and metal clusters (with metal-metal binding) protected by surface organic ligands, such as thiolate, phosphine, alkynyl, carbonyl and nitrogen/oxygen donor ligands. Furthermore, we present the symmetrical beauty of metal cluster structures and the geometrical similarity of different types of clusters and provide a large number of examples to show how to accurately describe the metal clusters from the perspective of highly symmetrical polyhedra. Finally, knowledge and further insights into the design and synthesis of unknown metal clusters are put forward by summarizing these "star" molecules.

dl-Serine Covalently Ornamented and Ln3+-Incorporated Arsenotungstates with Fast-Responsive Photochromic and Photoinduced Luminescent Switchable Behaviors

Three isostructural dl-serine covalently functionalized and multinuclear lanthanide (Ln³⁺)-embedded arsenotungstates, K₂[{As₄W₄₄O₁₃₇(OH)₁₈(H₂O)₂(dl-Ser)₂}{Ln₂(H₂O)₄(dl-Ser)}₂{Ln(H₂O)₇}₂]·70H₂O (Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2), and Gd (3); dl-Ser = C₃H₇NO₃), were prepared, where the centrosymmetric [{As₄W₄₄O₁₃₇(OH)₁₈(H₂O)₂(dl-Ser)₂}{Ln₂(H₂O)₄(dl-Ser)}₂]^8- polyanion consists of two {As₂W₁₉O₅₉(OH)₈(H₂O)}^6- fragments, integrated with a two-dl-serine-ornamented [W₆O₂₃(OH)₂(dl-Ser)₂{Ln₂(H₂O)₄}₂]^8- segment. In addition, the photochromic transformation of solid-state compounds 1-3 was observed from colorless to blue after a UV illumination of 4 min, and the decay process lasted as long as ∼20 h in the dark. The coloration kinetic half-life (t_1/2) values of compounds 1, 2, and 3 were calculated to be 0.597, 0.920, and 0.723 min, respectively. Furthermore, the luminescent properties and energy migration from arsenotungstates and organic chromophores to Sm³⁺ and Eu³⁺ ions in 1 and 2 have been intensively investigated. Further analysis manifests that 1 possesses an effective luminescent switchable behavior, triggered by its fast-responsive photochromism effect.

Robotic Stepwise Synthesis of Hetero-Multinuclear Metal Oxo Clusters as Single-Molecule Magnets

An efficient stepwise synthesis method for discovering new heteromultinuclear metal clusters using a robotic workflow is developed where numerous reaction conditions for constructing heteromultinuclear metal oxo clusters in polyoxometalates (POMs) were explored using a custom-built automated platform. As a result, new nonanuclear tetrametallic oxo clusters {FeMn₄}Lu₂A₂ in TBA₅[(A-α-SiW₉O₃₄)₂FeMn₄O₂{Lu(acac)₂}₂A₂] (II^A; A = Ag, Na, K; TBA = tetra-n-butylammonium; acac = acetylacetonate) were discovered by the installation of diamagnetic metal cations A⁺ into a paramagnetic {FeMn₄}Lu₂ unit in TBA₇[(A-α-SiW₉O₃₄)₂FeMn₄O₂{Lu(acac)₂}₂] (I). POMs II^A exhibited single-molecule magnet properties with the higher energy barriers for magnetization reversal (II^Ag, 40.0 K; II^Na, 40.3 K; II^K, 26.7 K) compared with that of the parent I (19.7 K). Importantly, these clusters with unique properties were constructed as designed by a step of the predictable sequential multistep reactions with the time-efficient platform.

Synthesis, structure, electrochemistry and magnetism of cobalt-, nickel- and zinc-containing [M4(OH)3(H2O)2(α-SiW10O36.5)2]13- (M = Co2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+)

Interaction of the trilacunary 9-tungstosilicate [A-α-SiW₉O₃₄]^10- with cobalt(ii), nickel(ii) and zinc(ii) ions in pH 9 aqueous medium at room temperature led to the formation of the respective M₄-containing heteropolytungstates [M₄(OH)₃(H₂O)₂(α-SiW₁₀O_36.5)₂]^13- (M = Co²⁺ (1), Ni²⁺ (2), and Zn²⁺ (3)). Polyanions 1-3 were characterized in the solid state by single-crystal XRD, FT-IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric and elemental analyses. Electrochemical studies showed that the Co²⁺ ions in 1 can be oxidized to Co³⁺ and the CVs of the W^VI centers of the polyanions feature well-defined and chemically reversible reduction waves. Magnetic measurements on 1 and 2 showed paramagnetism with complex ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. A model was presented for extracting the exchange constants for the magnetic exchange interaction.

A trapped hexaaqua CoII complex between the polyanionic sheets of decavanadate reveals high axial anisotropy and field induced SIM behaviour

In this work, we report an inorganic compound [{Co(H₂O)₆}²⁺{Na₄V₁₀O₂₈}^2-] (1) in which the polyanionic sheets of decavanadate play the role of a diamagnetic matrix that reduces the dipolar-dipolar and spin-spin interactions between [Co(H₂O)₆]⁺² units to suppress the fast tunnelling of magnetization. Structural analysis reveals that each [Co(H₂O)₆]⁺² complex is surrounded by four decavanadates and separated by a large internuclear distance (9 Å). It was also found that the adjacent decavanadates are connected via sodium ions and form a 2D sheet of the inorganic layer in which the [Co(H₂O)₆]²⁺ ions are present in between two layers. Detailed dc (direct current) and ac (alternating current) magnetic measurements disclose the presence of large easy-axis anisotropy (D = -102 cm^-1) and field induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviour with a spin reversal barrier of U_eff = 50 K. Additionally, the temperature dependence of the relaxation time reveals that the Raman and QTM processes mainly play an important role rather than the thermally activated Orbach process in the overall relaxation dynamics of the studied compound. To analyse the electronic structure and magnetic properties of compound 1, ab initio calculations were performed which further support the experimental observations. Notably, the U_eff value of 1 represents the highest energy barrier reported for POM based SMMs with transition metal ions to date.

Lanthanide-Containing 22-Tungsto-2-germanates [Ln(GeW11O39)2]13-: Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic Properties

We report on the synthesis and structural characterization of two series of lanthanide-containing 22-tungsto-2-germanates. The first series corresponds to a family of polyanions with the formula [Ln(β₂-GeW₁₁O₃₉)₂]^13- (Ln^III = La (1), Ce (2), Pr (3), Nd (4), Sm (5), Gd (6), Dy (7)), and the second series corresponds to a family with the formula [Ln(β₂-GeW₁₁O₃₉)(α-GeW₁₁O₃₉)]^13- (Ln^III = Ho (8), Er (9), Tm (10)). All compounds were characterized in the solid state by single-crystal and powder XRD, IR, TGA, and SQUID magnetometry. The polyanions were synthesized in aqueous medium by direct reaction of the monolacunary [β₂-GeW₁₁O₃₉]^8- POM precursor with the corresponding lanthanide salts. The structure of the polyanions consists of an 8-coordinated lanthanide ion in a square-antiprismatic geometry, which is sandwiched either between two [β₂-GeW₁₁O₃₉]^8- units for 1-7 or between a [β₂-GeW₁₁O₃₉]^8- and a [α-GeW₁₁O₃₉]^8- unit for 8-10. Furthermore, the effect of the central paramagnetic lanthanide ion on the magnetic behavior of the polyanions was investigated, with the erbium-derivative [Er(β₂-GeW₁₁O₃₉)(α-GeW₁₁O₃₉)]^13- (9) showing single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior.

9-Cobalt(II)-Containing 27-Tungsto-3-germanate(IV): Synthesis, Structure, Computational Modeling, and Heterogeneous Water Oxidation Catalysis

The 9-cobalt(II)-containing trimeric, cyclic polyanion [Co₉(OH)₃(H₂O)₆(PO₄)₂(B-α-GeW₉O₃₄)₃]^21- (1) was synthesized in an aqueous phosphate solution at pH 8 and isolated as a hydrated mixed sodium-cesium salt. Polyanion 1 was structurally and compositionally characterized in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as thermogravimetric and elemental analyses. The magnetic and electrochemical properties of 1 were also studied and compared with those of its phosphorus analogue, [Co₉(OH)₃(H₂O)₆(HPO₄)₂(B-α-PW₉O₃₄)₃]^16- (Co₉-P). The electrochemical water oxidation activity of the cesium salt of 1 under heterogeneous conditions was also studied and shown to be superior to that of Co₉-P. The experimental results were supported by computational studies.

Polyoxometalate-based high-spin cluster systems: a NMR relaxivity study up to 1.4 GHz/33 T

Paramagnetic polyoxometalates are of special interest with regard to their application as alternative contrast agents in nonhuman magnetic resonance imaging which is increasingly used in materials science and process engineering.

A new octa-Mn-substituted poly(polyoxotungstate)

A novel octa-Mn-substituted silicotungstate (ST) tetramer [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₈H₁₉Na₄{[K(H₂O)₄WO₄] [SiMnII2W₁₀O₃₈]₃}[SiMnIII2W₁₀O₃₈]·27H₂O (1) was prepared, and its electrochemistry, thermal stability and magnetic properties were investigated.

Incorporating polyoxometalates and organic ligands to pursue 3d–4f heterometallic clusters: a series of {Cr4Ln4} clusters stabilized by phthalic acid and [SiW12O40]4−

By introduction of trilacunary Keggin-type polyoxometalate to the hydrothermal reaction system of Cr³⁺, Ln³⁺ and phthalic acid, a series of novel {Cr₄Ln₄} heterometallic clusters with the formula Cs₂[Cr₄Ln₄(μ₄-O)₄(μ₃-O)₄(C₈H₄O₄)₄(H₂O)₁₂](H₃SiW₁₂O₄₀)Cl·23H₂O (1-Ln, Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd) and [Cr₄Ln₄(μ₄-O)₄(μ₃-O)₄(C₈H₄O₄)₄(H₂O)₁₀](H₆SiW₁₂O₄₀)Cl₂·18H₂O (2-Ln, Ln = Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er) have been obtained. Single-crystal structural analyses show that 1-Ln and 2-Ln constitute the first cases of Cr–Ln heterometallic clusters stabilized by inorganic polyoxometalate anions and organic ligands. Optical spectra studies demonstrate that 1-Ln and 2-Ln are narrow-gap semiconductors with band gaps of about 1.5 eV. Magnetic investigation shows that compound 2-Dy is a potential single molecule magnet.

Large Magnetic Polyoxometalates Containing the Cobalt Cubane '[CoIIICo 3II (OH)3(H2O)6-m(PW9O34)]3-' (m = 3 or 5) as a Subunit

A synthetic procedure is presented to construct new magnetic polyoxometalates (POMs) containing one or two subunits of ‘[Co^IIICo3II(OH)₃(H₂O)_6−m(PW₉O₃₄)]³⁻' (m = 3 or 5). The substitution of the water ligands present in these subunits by oxo or hydroxo ligands belonging to other POM fragments, gives rise to four, larger POM anions: [Co₇(OH)₆(H₂O)₆(PW₉O₃₄)₂]⁹⁻ (2), [Co₇(OH)₆(H₂O)₄(PW₉O₃₄)₂]n9n- (2′), [Co₁₁(OH)₅(H₂O)₅(W₆O₂₄)(PW₉O₃₄)₃]²²⁻ (3) and [{Co₄(OH)₃(H₂O)(PW₉O₃₄)}₂{K⊂(H₂W₁₂O₄₁)₂}{Co(H₂O)₄}₂]¹⁷⁻ (4). The crystal structures, magnetic characterization and stabilities in aqueous solutions of these POM derivatives are also presented.

Evans–Showell-type polyoxometalate constructing novel 3D inorganic architectures with alkaline earth metal linkers: syntheses, structures and catalytic properties

Two 3D frameworks and two 2D networks with an excellent catalytic effect of cyanosilylation were successfully obtained, originating from Evans–Showell-type polyoxoanions [Co₂Mo₁₀H₄O₃₈]⁶⁻ and alkaline earth metal cations (Sr²⁺, Ba²⁺).

Insight into the reactivity of in situ formed {(NbO2)3SiW9}: synthesis, structure, and solution properties of a trimeric polytungstosilicate trapping a {MnNb9} core

The first example of the trimeric polyoxometalate cluster, Cs₁₀Na₃[(SiW₉Nb₃O₃₈)₃MnO₃(H₂O)₃]·18H₂O (1a), has been synthesized using an in situ synthetic strategy and thoroughly characterized.

Two new members of the niobium-substituted polytungstophosphate family based on hexalacunary [H2P2W12O48]12− building blocks

Herein we present two structurally novel nanoscale clusters [{Nb₆(O₂)₄P₂W₁₂O₅₇}₂]²⁰⁻ (1) and [{P₂W₁₂Nb₇O₆₃(H₂O)₂}₄{Nb₄O₄(OH)₆}]³⁰⁻ (2) formed by controlling the reaction parameters.

Assembly of hybrids based on polyoxotungstates and Co-tris(imidazolyl) complexes with bifunctional electrocatalytic activities

Three new organic–inorganic hybrid compounds based on Keggin POMs and Co–tib motifs were hydrothermally synthesized in the same POM/Co/tib reaction systems with different pH.
