Abstract
We synthesized intramolecularly aliphatic alcoholate-coordinated iron porphyrins (1a, 1b) that retain their axial coordination in the presence of another ligand or oxidant. The electron-donative character of alcoholate was less than that of thiolate, and the coordination ability of a sixth ligand to 1a and 1b was very much lower than in the case of the thiolate-coordinated compounds. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the marked difference in coordination ability could be explained in terms of thermodynamic and steric factors. The catalytic oxidizing ability of the thiolate-coordinated compound, SR complex, was much higher than that of 1a.

Abstract
Porphyrin-based chemistry has reached an unprecedented period of rapid development after decades of study. Due to attractive multifunctional properties, porphyrins and their analogues have emerged as multifunctional organometals for environmental and energy purposes. In particular, pioneer works have been conducted to explore their application in pollution abatement, energy conversion and storage and molecule recognition. This review summarizes recent advances of porphyrins chemistry, focusing on elucidating the nature of catalytic process. The Fenton-like redox chemistry and photo-excitability of porphyrins and their analogues are discussed, highlighting the generation of high-valent iron oxo porphyrin species. Finally, challenges in current research are identified and perspectives for future development in this area are presented.

Abstract
Axial ligands play a dominating role in determining the electronic structure and reactivity of iron porphyrin active sites and synthetic models. Several properties unique to the cysteine bound heme enzyme, cytochrome P450, is attributed to the "push effect" of the thiolate axial ligand. In this mini-review the ground state electronic structure of iron porphyrins with imidazole, phenolate and thiolate complexes, derived using a combination of spectroscopy and DFT calculations, are discussed. The differences in kinetics and selectivity of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), catalyzed by these iron porphyrin complexes with different axial ligands, help elucidate the varying push effects of the different axial ligands on oxygen activation by ferrous porphyrin. The spectroscopic and kinetic data help to develop a quantitative understanding of the "push effect" and, in particular, the electrostatic and covalent contributions to it.
