Kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of vanadium(III) by chlorate ion, chlorine dioxide, chlorous acid, and hypochlorous acid

Enhancing Aqueous Chlorate Reduction Using Vanadium Redox Cycles and pH Control

Chlorate (ClO3-) is a toxic oxyanion pollutant from industrial wastes, agricultural applications, drinking water disinfection, and wastewater treatment. Catalytic reduction of ClO3- using palladium (Pd) nanoparticle catalysts exhibited sluggish kinetics. This work demonstrates an 18-fold activity enhancement by integrating earth-abundant vanadium (V) into the common Pd/C catalyst. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical studies indicated that VV and VIV precursors are reduced to VIII in the aqueous phase (rather than immobilized on the carbon support) by Pd-activated H2. The VIII/IV redox cycle is the predominant mechanism for the ClO3- reduction. Further reduction of chlorine intermediates to Cl- could proceed via VIII/IV and VIV/V redox cycles or direct reduction by Pd/C. To capture the potentially toxic V metal from the treated solution, we adjusted the pH from 3 to 8 after the reaction, which completely immobilized VIII onto Pd/C for catalyst recycling. The enhanced performance of reductive catalysis using a Group 5 metal adds to the diversity of transition metals (e.g., Cr, Mo, Re, Fe, and Ru in Groups 6-8) for water pollutant treatment via various unique mechanisms.

Kinetic studies on the reaction of cob(II)alamin with hypochlorous acid: Evidence for one electron oxidation of the metal center and corrin ring destruction

Kinetic and mechanistic studies on the reaction of a major intracellular vitamin B₁₂ form, cob(II)alamin (Cbl(II)), with hypochlorous acid/hypochlorite (HOCl/OCl^-) have been carried out. Cbl(II) (Co(II)) is rapidly oxidized by HOCl to predominately aquacobalamin/hydroxycobalamin (Cbl(III), Co(III)) with a second-order rate constant of 2.4×10⁷M^-1s^-1 (25.0°C). The stoichiometry of the reaction is 1:1. UHPLC/HRMS analysis of the product mixture of the reaction of Cbl(II) with 0.9mol equiv. HOCl provides support for HOCl being initially reduced to Cl and subsequent H atom abstraction from the corrin macrocycle occurring, resulting in small amounts of corrinoid species with two or four H atoms fewer than the parent cobalamin. Upon the addition of excess (H)OCl further slower reactions are observed. Finally, SDS-PAGE experiments show that HOCl-induced damage to bovine serum albumin does not occur in the presence of Cbl(II), providing support for Cbl(II) being an efficient HOCl trapping agent.

Oxidation of vanadium(III) by hydrogen peroxide and the oxomonoperoxo vanadium(V) ion in acidic aqueous solutions: a kinetics and simulation study

The reaction between vanadium(III) and hydrogen peroxide in aqueous acidic solutions was investigated. The rate law shows first-order dependences on both vanadium(III) and hydrogen peroxide concentrations, with a rate constant, defined in terms of -d[H(2)O(2)]/dt, of 2.06 +/- 0.03 L mol(-)(1) s(-)(1) at 25 degrees C; the rate is independent of hydrogen ion concentration. The varying reaction stoichiometry, the appreciable evolution of dioxygen, the oxidation of 2-PrOH to acetone, and the inhibition of acetone formation by the hydroxyl radical scavengers, dimethyl sulfoxide and sodium benzoate, point to a Fenton mechanism as the predominant pathway in the reaction. Methyltrioxorhenium(VII) does not appear to catalyze this reaction. A second-order rate constant for the oxidation of V(3+) by OV(O(2))(+) was determined to be 11.3 +/- 0.3 L mol(-)(1) s(-)(1) at 25 degrees C. An overall reaction scheme consisting of over 20 reactions, in agreement with the experimental results and literature reports, was established by kinetic simulation studies.

Thermal and photochemical reduction of aqueous chlorine by ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes

Studies are reported on the reactions of aqueous chlorine with a series of substitution-inert, one-electron metal-complex reductants, which includes [Ru(bpy)3]2+, [Ru(4,4'-Me2bpy)3]2+, [Ru(4,7-Me2phen)3]2+, [Ru(terpy)2]2+, and [Fe(3,4,7,8-Me4phen)3]2+. The reactions were studied by spectrophotometry at 25 degrees C in acidic chloride media at mu = 0.3 M. In general the reactions have the stoichiometry 2[ML3]2+ + Cl2-->2[ML3]3+ + 2Cl-. In the case of [Ru(bpy)3]2+, the reaction is quite photosensitive; the thermal reaction is so slow as to be practically immeasurable. The reactions of [Ru(4,4'-Me2bpy)3]2+ and [Ru(4,7-Me2phen)3]2+ are also highly photosensitive, giving pseudo-first-order rate constants that depend on the monochromator slit width in a stopped-flow instrument; however, the thermal rates are fast enough that they can be obtained by extrapolation of kobs to zero slit width. The reactions of [Ru(terpy)2]2+ and [Fe(3,4,7,8-Me4phen)3]2+ show no appreciable photosensitivity, allowing direct determination of their thermal rate laws. From the kinetic effects of pH, [Cl2]tot, and [Cl-] it is evident that all of the thermal rate laws have a first-order dependence on [ML3]2+ and on [Cl2]. The second-order rate constants decrease as Eo for the complex increases, consistent with the predictions of Marcus theory for an outer-sphere electron-transfer mechanism. Quantum yields at 460 nm for the reactions of [Ru(4,4'-Me2bpy)3]2+ and [Ru(4,7-Me2phen)3]2+ exceed 0.1 and show a dependence on [Cl2] indicative of competition among spontaneous decay of *Ru, nonreactive quenching by Cl2, and reactive quenching by Cl2.
