Abstract
Although 1,10-phenanthroline has been proven to hold a strong complexing capacity for f-block elements and their derivatives have been applied in many fields, research on more highly or completely rigid phenanthroline ligands is still rare due to the challenging syntheses. Here, we reported three tetradentate ligands 2,9-di(pyridin-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (L1), 12-(pyridin-2-yl)-5,6-dihydroquinolino[8,7b][1,10]phenanthroline (L2), and 5,6,11,12-tetrahydrobenzo[2,1-b:3,4-b']bis([1,10]phenanthroline) (L3) with increasing preorganization on the side chain; among which, L3 is fully preorganized. Their complexation reactions with Eu(III) were systematically investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), UV-vis titrations, and single-crystal structures. It is found that all three ligands form only 1:1 M/L complexes with Eu(III). The single-crystal structures revealed that the three ligands hold similar coordination modes, while their stability constants determined by UV-vis titrations were L3 (4.80 ± 0.01) > L2 (4.38 ± 0.01) > L1 (3.88 ± 0.01). This trend is supported not only by the thermodynamic stability of rigid ligands compared to free ligands but also by the conclusion that rigid ligands exhibit faster reaction rates (lower energy barrier) than free ligands kinetically. This work is helpful in providing theoretical guidance for the subsequent development of highly preorganized chelating ligands with strong coordination ability and high selectivity for f-block elements.

Abstract
The neutral rhenium(I)-biimidazole complex [Re(CO)3(biimH)(1,4-NVP)] (1) was designed and synthesized by a one-pot reaction of Re2(CO)10, 2,2'-biimidazole (biimH2) and 4-(1-naphthylvinyl)pyridine (1,4-NVP). The structure of 1 was characterized by various spectroscopic techniques including IR, 1H NMR, FAB-MS, and elemental analysis and further confirmed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The mononuclear complex 1, a relatively simple structure with an octahedral geometry, is comprised of facial-arranged carbonyl groups, one chelated biimH monoanion, and one 1,4-NVP. Complex 1 shows the lowest energy absorption band at around 357 nm and an emission band at 408 nm in THF. The luminescent characteristics of 1 combined with the hydrogen bonding ability of the partially coordinated monoionic biimidazole ligand permits the complex to selectively recognize fluoride ions (F-) in the presence of other halides through a dramatic luminescence enhancement. The recognition mechanism of 1 can be convincingly explained in terms of H-bond formation and proton abstraction upon the addition of F- ions by 1H and 19F NMR titration experiments. The electronic properties of 1 were further supported by time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) computational studies.

Abstract
Shape-switchable cyclophane hosts allow the controlled capture and release of reactive polypyridineRu(ii) complexes in water. This gives rise to a network of host–guest binding, acid–base reactions in ground and excited states, and chemical redox interconversions. In the case of (2-(2′-pyridyl)imidazole)Ru(ii) complexes, several molecular logic gate arrays of varying complexity emerge as a result. Cyclophane-induced ‘off–on’ switching of luminescence in neutral solution is found to originate from two features of these aromatic hosts: enhancement of radiative decay by the polarizable host and the suppression of nonradiative decay involving deprotonation by reducing the water content within the deep host cavity. These are examples of nanometric coordination chemistry/physics being controlled by inclusion in an open box. The aromatic units of the macrocycle are also responsible for the shape-switching mechanism of wall collapse/erection. Transactions of a polypyridineRu(ii) complex with photons, protons and shape-switchable hosts show several types of molecular logic.![]()

Abstract
Eight 1,10-phenanthrolines bearing one or two 2-(1-adamantyloxy)ethylamino substituents attached to different positions of the heterocyclic core were prepared according to SN Ar or palladium-catalyzed amination reactions. Their reaction with cis-Ru(bpy)2 Cl2 (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine) was investigated and Ru(bpy)2 (L)(PF6 )2 (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) (L=amino-substituted 1,10-phenanthroline) complexes were obtained in good yields. The electronic structure and emissive properties of these complexes are strongly dependent on the position of the amino substituent in the heterocycle. Emission bands of the complexes bearing 2- and 4-substituted 1,10-phenanthroline ligands are red-shifted (up to 56 nm) and less intense compared to that of the parent [Ru(phen)(bpy)2 ](PF6 )2 . In contrast, the introduction of the substituent in 3- or 5-position of 1,10-phenanthroline ring induces only small decrease of luminescence and the brightness of the complex with the 3-substituted ligand is comparable to that of the parent complex.

Abstract
A label-free detection assay is developed based on the design and synthesis of a new anionic alkynylplatinum(II) 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2'-yl)pyridine complex with water-soluble pendants. With the aid of electrostatic interaction and noncovalent metal-metal and π-π stacking interactions, protamine is shown to induce supramolecular self-assembly of platinum(II) complexes with drastic UV-vis absorption and red emission changes. On the basis of the strong binding affinity of protamine and heparin, the ensemble has been further employed to probe heparin by monitoring the spectroscopic changes. Other than heparin, this ensemble can also detect the activity of trypsin, which can hydrolyze protamine into fragments, leading to the deaggregation of platinum(II) complexes. By modulation of the self-assembly properties of platinum(II) complexes via real-time UV-vis absorption and emission studies, the reported assay has been demonstrated to be a sensitive and selective detection method for trypsin, as well as trypsin inhibitor screening, which is essential for drug discovery.

Abstract
Conjugations with the recently developed [18F]ethenesulfonyl fluoride ([18F]ESF) were performed on 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline, in its free form and coordinated to a rhenium(i) tricarbonyl complex, as a means of radiosynthesizing dual-modal optical and positron emission tomography (PET) tracers. The Michael-donating ability of the aromatic amine was noticeably perturbed on coordination with the rhenium(i) centre, resulting in decreased radiochemical yields from 34%, in the case of the free ligand, to 1%. We attribute the decreased nucleophilicity of the amine to metal deactivation from the electron-withdrawing feature of the rhenium(i) tricarbonyl centre, based on spectroscopic and computational evidence, thus highlighting this effect as a crucial parameter in designing late-stage metal coordination methods employing related aza-Michael additions. Photophysical analyses were also performed on the ESF-conjugated rhenium(i) complex, exhibiting a longer decay lifetime from the triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited state when compared with the non-conjugated analogue.

Abstract
In the title compound, C23H18N3O3 (+)·CF3SO3 (-), the asymmetric unit contains two crystallographically independent organic cations with similar conformations. Each cation shows a moderate distortion between the planes of the amide groups and the quinolinium rings with dihedral angles of 14.90 (2) and 31.66 (2)°. The quinolinium and phenyl rings are slightly twisted with respect to each other at dihedral angles of 6.99 (4) and 8.54 (4)°. The tri-fluoro-methane-sulfonate anions are linked to the organic cations via N-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions involving the NH amide groups. In the crystal, the organic cations are linked by weak C-H⋯O(nitro group) inter-actions into supramol-ecular chains propagating along the b-axis direction.

Abstract
The formation of supramolecular assemblies between [Pt(bzimpy-Et){C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CC6H4(CH2NMe3-4)}]Cl2 (1) and mPPE-Ala and the FRET properties of the ensemble have been revealed from the UV-vis absorption, steady-state emission and time-resolved emission decay studies. The two-component mPPE-Ala-1 ensemble has been employed in a "proof-of-principle" concept for label-free detection of G-quadruplex DNAs with the intramolecular propeller parallel folding topology, such as c-myc, in aqueous buffer solution. By the modulation of the aggregation/deaggregation of the polymer-metal complex aggregates and hence the FRET from the mPPE-Ala donor to the aggregated 1 as acceptor, the ensemble has been demonstrated for sensitive and selective label-free detection of c-myc via the monitoring of emission spectral changes of the ensemble. Ratiometric emission of the ensemble at 461 and 662 nm has been shown to distinguish the intramolecular propeller parallel G-quadruplex folding topology of c-myc from other G-quadruplex-forming sequences of different folding topologies, owing to the strong and specific interactions between c-myc and 1 as suggested by the UV-vis absorption and UV melting studies. In addition, the formation of high-order intermolecular multimeric G-quadruplexes from c-myc under molecular crowding conditions has been successfully probed by the ratiometric emission of the ensemble. The conformational and topological transition of human telomeric DNA from the mixed-hybrid form to the intramolecular propeller parallel form, as observed from the circular dichroism spectroscopy, has also been monitored by the ratiometric emission of the ensemble. The ability of the ensemble to detect these conformational and topological transitions of G-quadruplex DNAs has been rationalized by the excellent selectivity and sensitivity of the ensemble towards the intramolecular propeller parallel G-quadruplex DNAs and their high-order intermolecular multimers, which are due to the extra stabilization gained from Pt···Pt and π-π interactions in addition to the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions found in the polymer-metal complex aggregates.

Abstract
Tetrapodal ligands H4L(1) and H4L(2) containing imidazole groups have been synthesized by the reaction of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione with 1,2,4,5-tetrakis[(4-formylphenoxy)methyl]benzene and 1,2,4,5-tetrakis[(3-formylphenoxy)methyl]benzene, respectively, in presence of NH4OAc. Two star-shaped complexes [{Ru(bpy)2}4(μ4-H4L(1))](PF6)8 and [{Ru(bpy)2}4(μ4-H4L(2))](PF6)8 (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) have been prepared by refluxing Ru(bpy)2Cl2 ·2H2O and each ligand in ethylene glycol. The deprotonated complexes [{Ru(bpy)2}4(μ4-L(1))](PF6)4 and [{Ru(bpy)2}4(μ4-L(2))](PF6)4 have been obtained by the reaction of sodium methoxide with [{Ru(bpy)2}4(μ4-H4L(1))](PF6)8 and [{Ru(bpy)2}4(μ4-H4L(2))](PF6)8, respectively, in methanol. The pH effects on the UV-vis light absorption and emission spectra of both complexes have been studied, and ground- and excited-state ionization constants of both complexes have been derived. The photophysical properties of both complexes are strongly dependent on the solution pH. They act as proton-induced off-on-off luminescent sensors through two successive deprotonation processes of imidazole groups, with a maximum on-off ratio of 8 in buffer solution at room temperature. Theoretical calculations for the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest occupied molecular orbital (LOMO) orbitals of bridging ligand are also presented for plausible explanations of the fluorescence changes.

Abstract
Two dinuclear Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes functionalized with vacant coordination sites have been designed and synthesized. Their photophysical properties and interactions with various metal ions have been investigated at room temperature. The two complexes exhibit different UV/Vis absorption and emission intensities. When titrated with various metal ions, complex [{Ru(bpy)2}2(μ2-L(1))](4+) exhibits a notable fluorescence quenching in the presence of Cu(2+) in H2O-CH3CN media (1:1, v/v); its analogous complex [{Ru(bpy)2}2(μ2-L(2))](4+) exhibits no cation selectivity, the fluorescence intensity of complex [{Ru(bpy)2}2(μ2-L(2))](4+) has been enhanced by several transition metal ions due to prevention of the photo-induced electron transfer process. The fluorescence titration spectra and Benesi-Hildebrand expression reveal the formation of a 1:1 bonding mode between [{Ru(bpy)2}2(μ2-L(1))](4+) and Cu(2+) ion with the association constant of 5.50×10(4) M(-1).

Abstract
Molecular sensors able to detect ions are of interest due to their potential application in areas such as pollutant sequestration. Alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes with an amide-based receptor moiety have been synthesized and characterized. Their anion binding properties based on host-guest interactions have been examined with the use of UV-vis absorption and emission spectral titration studies. Spectral changes were observed for both complexes upon the addition of spherical and nonspherical anions. Their titration profiles were shown to be in good agreement with theoretical results predicting a 1:1 binding model, and the binding constants were determined from the experimental data. Drastic color changes from yellow to orange-red were observed for one of the complexes upon titration with fluoride (F(-)) ion in acetone. These changes were ascribed to the deprotonation of the amide functionalities induced by F(-) ion, and this was confirmed by the restoration of spectral changes upon addition of trifluoroacetic acid to the F(-) ion-complex mixture as well as by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) data.

Abstract
Hexapodal ligand H6L containing imidazole rings has been prepared by the reaction of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione with 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexakis[(3-formylphenoxy)methyl]benzene. The Ru(II) polypyridyl complex [{Ru(bpy)2}6(μ6-H6L)](PF6)12 (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine) has been synthesized by the reaction of Ru(bpy)2Cl2·2H2O with ligand H6L. The pH effects on the UV-vis absorption and emission spectra of the complex have been studied. The ground- and excited-state ionization constants of the acid-base equilibria have been calculated according to the absorbance and emission data. The complex acts as an off-on-off luminescent pH sensor through two successive deprotonation processes of imidazole rings, with a maximum on-off ratio of 5 in buffer solution.

Abstract
Six polypyridyl bridging ligands BL(1-6) containing open-chain crown ether, where BL(1-3) formed by the condensation of 4,5-diazafluoren-9-hydrazine with 1,7-bis-(4-formylphenyl)-1,4,7-trioxaheptane, 1,10-bis-(4-formylphenyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraoxadecane, and 1,13-bis-(4-formylphenyl)-1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxatridecane, respectively, BL(4-6) formed by the reaction of 9-(4-hydroxy)phenylimino-4,5-diazafluorene with diethylene glycol di-p-tosylate, triethylene glycol di-p-tosylate, and tetraethylene glycol di-p-tosylate, respectively, have been synthesized. Reaction of Ru(bpy)(2)Cl(2).2H(2)O with BL(1-6), respectively, afforded six bimetallic complexes [(bpy)(2)RuBL(1-6)Ru(bpy)(2)](4+) as PF(6)(-) salts. Cyclic voltammetry of these complexes is consistent with one Ru(II)-centered oxidation around 1.32V and three ligand-centered reductions. These complexes show metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorption at 413-444 nm and emission at 570 nm. Binding behavior of complexes with alkali and alkaline-earth metal ions are investigated by UV-vis absorption, fluorescence, and cyclic voltammetry. Addition of alkali and alkaline-earth metal ions to the solution of [(bpy)(2)RuBL(1-6)Ru(bpy)(2)](PF(6))(4) all result in a progressive quenching of fluorescence, a hyperchromic effect of UV-vis absorption, and a progressive cathodal shift of Ru(II)-centered E(1/2). Ru-BL(2) and Ru-BL(5) show the highest binding ability toward Mg(2+) among the five cations examined while Ru-BL(3) and Ru-BL(6) exhibit good selective recognition ability to Ca(2+).
