Abstract
Low-valent transition-metal diazenido species are important intermediates in transition-metal-mediated dinitrogen reduction reactions. Isolable complexes of the type unanimously feature closed-shell diazenido ligands. Those bearing open-shell diazenido ligands have remained elusive. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a d7 iron(I) complex featuring an open-shell silyldiazenido ligand, [(ICy)Fe(NNSiiPr3)(η2:η2-dvtms)] (1, ICy = 1,3-dicyclohexylimidazole-2-ylidene, dvtms = divinyltetramethyldisiloxane). Complex 1 is prepared in good yield by silylation of the iron(-I)-N2 complex [K(18-crown-6)][(ICy)Fe(N2)(η2:η2-dvtms)] with iPr3SiOTf and has been fully characterized by various spectroscopic methods. Theoretical studies, in combination with characterization data, established an S = 1/2 ground spin-state for 1 that can best be described as a quartet iron(I) center featuring an antiferromagnetically coupled triplet silyldiazenido ligand. The diazenido and alkene ligands in 1 are labile, as indicated by the facile disproportionation reaction of 1 at ambient temperature to transform into the iron(II) bis(diazenido) species [(ICy)(NNSiiPr3)2Fe(dvtms)Fe(NNSiiPr3)2(ICy)] (2) and the iron(0) species [(ICy)Fe(η2:η2-dvtms)] and also the alkene-exchange reaction of 1 with PhCH═CHBC8H14 to form [(ICy)Fe(NNSiiPr3)(η2-trans-PhCH═CHBC8H14)] (3). Complex 1 is light-sensitive. Upon photolysis, it undergoes a SiiPr3 radical-transfer reaction to yield [(ICy)Fe(σ:η2-MeCHSiMe2OSiMe2CH═CHSiiPr3)] (4) and N2. The reactions of 1 with the trityl radical and organic bromides yield iron(II) complexes, which indicates its reducing nature. Moreover, 1 is a weak hydrogen-atom abstractor, as indicated by its inertness toward HSi(SiMe3)3 and cyclohexa-1,4-diene and the low calculated N-H bond dissociation energy (48 kcal/mol) of its corresponding iron(II) iso-hydrazenido species.

Abstract
Despite the high levels of interest in the synthesis of bio-inspired [FeFe]-hydrogenase complexes, H2 oxidation, which is one specific aspect of hydrogenase enzymatic activity, is not observed for most reported complexes. To attempt H-H bond cleavage, two disubstituted diiron dithiolate complexes in the form of [Fe2(μ-pdt)L2(CO)4] (L: PMe3, dmpe) have been used to play the non-biomimetic role of a Lewis base, with frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) formed in the presence of B(C6F5)3 Lewis acid. These unprecedented FLPs, based on the bimetallic Lewis base partner, allow the heterolytic splitting of the H2 molecule, forming a protonated diiron cation and hydrido-borate anion. The substitution, symmetrical or asymmetrical, of two phosphine ligands at the diiron dithiolate core induces a strong difference in the H2 bond cleavage abilities, with the FLP based on the first complex being more efficient than the second. DFT investigations examined the different mechanistic pathways involving each accessible isomer and rationalized the experimental findings. One of the main DFT results highlights that the iron site acting as a Lewis base for the asymmetrical complex is the {Fe(CO)3} subunit, which is less electron-rich than the {FeL(CO)2} site of the symmetrical complex, diminishing the reactivity towards H2. Calculations relating to the different mechanistic pathways revealed the presence of a terminal hydride intermediate at the apical site of a rotated {Fe(CO)3} site, which is experimentally observed, and a semi-bridging hydride intermediate from H2 activation at the Fe-Fe site; these are responsible for a favourable back-reaction, reducing the conversion yield observed in the case of the asymmetrical complex. The use of two equivalents of Lewis acid allows for more complete and faster H2 bond cleavage due to the encapsulation of the hydrido-borate species by a second borane, favouring the reactivity of each FLP, in agreement with DFT calculations.

Abstract
The synthesis and redox properties are presented for the electron-rich bis(monothiolate)s Fe2(SR)2(CO)2(dppv)2 for R = Me ([1]0), Ph ([2]0), CH2Ph ([3]0). Whereas related derivatives adopt C2-symmetric Fe2(CO)2P4 cores, [1]0-[3]0 have Cs symmetry resulting from the unsymmetrical steric properties of the axial vs equatorial R groups. Complexes [1]0-[3]0 undergo 1e- oxidation upon treatment with ferrocenium salts to give the mixed valence cations [Fe2(SR)2(CO)2(dppv)2]+. As established crystallographically, [3]+ adopts a rotated structure, characteristic of related mixed valence diiron complexes. Unlike [1]+ and [2]+ and many other [Fe2(SR)2L6]+ derivatives, [3]+ undergoes C-S bond homolysis, affording the diferrous sulfido-thiolate [Fe2(SCH2Ph)(S)(CO)2(dppv)2]+ ([4]+). According to X-ray crystallography, the first coordination spheres of [3]+ and [4]+ are similar, but the Fe-sulfido bonds are short in [4]+. The conversion of [3]+ to [4]+ follows first-order kinetics, with k = 2.3 × 10-6 s-1 (30 °C). When the conversion is conducted in THF, the organic products are toluene and dibenzyl. In the presence of TEMPO, the conversion of [3]+ to [4]+ is accelerated about 10×, the main organic product being TEMPO-CH2Ph. DFT calculations predict that the homolysis of a C-S bond is exergonic for [Fe2(SCH2Ph)2(CO)2(PR3)4]+ but endergonic for the neutral complex as well as less substituted cations. The unsaturated character of [4]+ is indicated by its double carbonylation to give [Fe2(SCH2Ph)(S)(CO)4(dppv)2]+ ([5]+), which adopts a bioctahedral structure.

Abstract
The kinetically robust hydride [t-HFe2(Me2pdt)(CO)2(dppv)2]+ ([t-H1]+) (Me2pdt2- = Me2C(CH2S-)2; dppv = cis-1,2-C2H2(PPh2)2) and related derivatives were prepared with 57Fe enrichment for characterization by NMR, FT-IR, and NRVS. The experimental results were rationalized using DFT molecular modeling and spectral simulations. The spectroscopic analysis was aimed at supporting assignments of Fe-H vibrational spectra as they relate to recent measurements on [FeFe]-hydrogenase enzymes. The combination of bulky Me2pdt2- and dppv ligands stabilizes the terminal hydride with respect to its isomerization to the 5-16 kcal/mol more stable bridging hydride ([μ-H1]+) with t1/2(313.3 K) = 19.3 min. In agreement with the nOe experiments, the calculations predict that one methyl group in [t-H1]+ interacts with the hydride with a computed CH···HFe distance of 1.7 Å. Although [t-H571]+ exhibits multiple NRVS features in the 720-800 cm-1 region containing the bending Fe-H modes, the deuterated [t-D571]+ sample exhibits a unique Fe-D/CO band at ∼600 cm-1. In contrast, the NRVS spectra for [μ-H571]+ exhibit weaker bands near 670-700 cm-1 produced by the Fe-H-Fe wagging modes coupled to Me2pdt2- and dppv motions.

Abstract
The effect of the nature of the dithiolato ligand on the physical and electrochemical properties of synthetic H-cluster mimics of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase is still of significant concern. In this report we describe the cyclization of various alkanedithiols to afford cyclic disulfide, tetrasulfide, and hexasulfide compounds. The latter compounds were used as proligands for the synthesis of a series of [FeFe]-hydrogenase H-cluster mimics having the general formulas [Fe2(CO)6{μ-S(CH2)nS}] (n = 4-8), [Fe2(CO)6{μ-S(CH2)nS}]2 (n = 6-8), and [Fe2(CO)6{(μ-S(CH2)nS)2}] (n = 6-8). The resulting complexes were characterized by 1H and 13C{1H} NMR and IR spectroscopic techniques, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis as well as X-ray analysis. The purpose of this research was to study the influence of the systematic increase of n from 2 to 7 on the redox potentials of the models and the catalytic ability in the presence of acetic acid (AcOH) by applying cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract
The complexes Fe2(pdt)(CNR)6 (pdt(2-) = CH2(CH2S(-))2) were prepared by thermal substitution of the hexacarbonyl complex with the isocyanides RNC for R = C6H4-4-OMe (1), C6H4-4-Cl (2), Me (3). These complexes represent electron-rich analogues of the parent Fe2(pdt)(CO)6. Unlike most substituted derivatives of Fe2(pdt)(CO)6, these isocyanide complexes are sterically unencumbered and have the same idealized symmetry as the parent hexacarbonyl derivatives. Like the hexacarbonyls, the stereodynamics of 1-3 involve both turnstile rotation of the Fe(CNR)3 as well as the inversion of the chair conformation of the pdt ligand. Structural studies indicate that the basal isocyanide has nonlinear CNC bonds and short Fe-C distances, indicating that they engage in stronger Fe-C π-backbonding than the apical ligands. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that these new complexes are far more reducing than the hexacarbonyls, although the redox behavior is complex. Estimated reduction potentials are E1/2 ≈ -0.6 ([2](+/0)), -0.7 ([1](+/0)), and -1.25 ([3](+/0)). According to DFT calculations, the rotated isomer of 3 is only 2.2 kcal/mol higher in energy than the crystallographically observed unrotated structure. The effects of rotated versus unrotated structure and of solvent coordination (THF, MeCN) on redox potentials were assessed computationally. These factors shift the redox couple by as much as 0.25 V, usually less. Compounds 1 and 2 protonate with strong acids to give the expected μ-hydrides [H1](+) and [H2](+). In contrast, 3 protonates with [HNEt3]BAr(F)4 (pKa(MeCN) = 18.7) to give the aminocarbyne [Fe2(pdt)(CNMe)5(μ-CN(H)Me)](+) ([3H](+)). According to NMR measurements and DFT calculations, this species adopts an unsymmetrical, rotated structure. DFT calculations further indicate that the previously described carbyne complex [Fe2(SMe)2(CO)3(PMe3)2(CCF3)](+) also adopts a rotated structure with a bridging carbyne ligand. Complex [3H](+) reversibly adds MeNC to give [Fe2(pdt)(CNR)6(μ-CN(H)Me)](+) ([3H(CNMe)](+)). Near room temperature, [3H](+) isomerizes to the hydride [(μ-H)Fe2(pdt)(CNMe)6](+) ([H3](+)) via a first-order pathway.

Abstract
A series of pendant amine-containing [FeFe]-hydrogenase models, [X(CH2S-μ)2{Fe(CO)3}{Fe(CO)(P2(Ph)N2(Bn))}] (1H, X = CH2; 2Me, C(CH3)2; 3Et, C(CH2CH3)2; and P2(Ph)N2(Bn) = 1,5-dibenzyl-3,7-diphenyl-1,5-diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctane) with different groups at the bridgehead carbon of the S-to-S linker were synthesized. The oxidations of these complexes as well as the reverse reduction reaction were studied by cyclic voltammetry and in situ IR spectroscopy. Regardless of the bridgehead steric bulk, all three complexes demonstrate intramolecular iron-mediated C(sp(3))-H bond heterolytic cleavage with the assistance of the pendant amine base within the chelating diphosphine ligand in the two-electron oxidation process. X-ray crystallographic analysis shows that the doubly oxidized products, [1'H](+), [2'Me](+), and [3'Et](+), all have a rigid FeSC three-membered ring at the open apical site of the rotated iron center. The most noticeable difference in structures of the oxidized complexes is that the single CO ligand of the rotated Fe(P2(Ph)N2(Bn))(CO) unit in [1'H](+) and [2'Me](+) is found below the Fe···Fe vector, while in [3'Et](+) an unusually rotated Fe(P2(Ph)N2(Bn))(CO) moiety positions one of the P donors within the bidentate ligand under the Fe···Fe vector. The starting Fe(I)Fe(I) complexes can be recovered from their corresponding doubly oxidized complexes by reduction in the presence of Brönsted acid.

Abstract
The [FeFe] hydrogenases (H2ases) catalyze the redox reaction that interconverts protons and H2. This area of biocatalysis has attracted attention because the metal-based chemistry is unusual, and the reactions have practical implications. The active site consists of a [4Fe-4S] cluster bridged to a [Fe2(μ-dithiolate)(CN)2(CO)3](z) center (z = 1- and 2-). The dithiolate cofactor is [HN(CH2S)2](2-), called the azadithiolate ([adt(H)](2-)). Although many derivatives of Fe2(SR)2(CO)6-xLx are electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), most operate by slow nonbiomimetic pathways. Biomimetic hydrogenogenesis is thought to involve intermediates, wherein the hydride substrate is adjacent to the amine of the adt(H), being bonded to only one Fe center. Formation of terminal hydride complexes is favored when the diiron carbonyl models contain azadithiolate. Although unstable in the free state, the adt cofactor is stable once it is affixed to the Fe2 center. It can be prepared by alkylation of Fe2(SH)2(CO)6 with formaldehyde in the presence of ammonia (to give adt(H) derivatives) or amines (to give adt(R) derivatives). Weak acids protonate Fe2(adt(R))(CO)2(PR3)4 to give terminal hydrido (term-H) complexes. In contrast, protonation of the related 1,3-propanedithiolate (pdt(2-)) complexes Fe2(pdt)(CO)2(PR3)4 requires strong acids. The amine in the azadithiolate is a kinetically fast base, relaying protons to and from the iron, which is a kinetically slow base. The crystal structure of the doubly protonated model [(term-H)Fe2(Hadt(H))(CO)2(dppv)2](2+) confirms the presence of both ammonium and terminal hydrido centers, which interact through a dihydrogen bond (dppv = cis-C2H2(PPh2)2). DFT calculations indicate that this H---H interaction is sensitive to the counterions and is strengthened upon reduction of the diiron center. For the monoprotonated models, the hydride [(term-H)Fe2(adt(H))(CO)2(dppv)2](+) exists in equilibrium with the ammonium tautomer [Fe2(Hadt(H))(CO)2(dppv)2](+). Both [(term-H)Fe2(Hadt(H))(CO)2(dppv)2](2+) and [(term-H)Fe2(adt(H))(CO)2(dppv)2](+) are highly active electrocatalysts for HER. Catalysis is initiated by reduction of the diferrous center, which induces coupling of the protic ammonium center and the hydride ligand. In contrast, the propanedithiolate [(term-H)Fe2(pdt)(CO)2(dppv)2](+) is a poor electrocatalyst for HER. Oxidation of H2 has been demonstrated, starting with models for the oxidized state ("Hox"), for example, [Fe2(adt(H))(CO)3(dppv)(PMe3)](+). Featuring a distorted Fe(II)Fe(I) center, this Hox model reacts slowly with high pressures of H2 to give [(μ-H)Fe2(adt(H))(CO)3(dppv)(PMe3)](+). Highlighting the role of the proton relay, the propanedithiolate [Fe2(pdt)(CO)3(dppv)(PMe3)](+) is unreactive toward H2. The Hox-model + H2 reaction is accelerated in the presence of ferrocenium salts, which simulate the role of the attached [4Fe-4S] cluster. The redox-complemented complex [Fe2(adt(Bn))(CO)3(dppv)(FcP*)](n+) catalyzes both proton reduction and hydrogen oxidation (FcP* = (C5Me5)Fe(C5Me4CH2PEt2)).

Abstract
A discrete nanocage of core-shell design, in which carboxylic acid groups were tethered to the core and silanol to the shell interior, was found to react with Co2(CO)8 to form and stabilize a Co(I)-CO species. The singular CO stretching band of this new Co species at 1958 cm(-1) and its magnetic susceptibility were consistent with Co(I) compounds. When exposed to O2, it transformed from an EPR inactive to an EPR active species indicative of oxidation of Co(I) to Co(II) with the formation of H2O2. It could be oxidized also by organoazide or water. Its residence in the nanocage interior was confirmed by size selectivity in the oxidation process and the fact that the entrapped Co species could not be accessed by an electrode.

Abstract
Mechanisms for biological and bioinspired dihydrogen activation and production often invoke the intermediacy of diiron dithiolato dihydrides. The first example of such a Fe2(SR)2H2 species is provided by the complex [(term-H)(μ-H)Fe2(pdt)(CO)(dppv)2] ([H1H](0)). Spectroscopic and computational studies indicate that [H1H](0) contains both a bridging hydride and a terminal hydride, which, notably, occupies a basal site. The synthesis begins with [(μ-H)Fe2(pdt)(CO)2(dppv)2](+) ([H1(CO)](+)), which undergoes substitution to afford [(μ-H)Fe2(pdt)(CO)(NCMe)(dppv)2](+) ([H1(NCMe)](+)). Upon treatment of [H1(NCMe)](+) with borohydride salts, the MeCN ligand is displaced to afford [H1H](0). DNMR (EXSY, SST) experiments on this complex show that the terminal and bridging hydride ligands interchange intramolecularly at a rate of 1 s(-1) at -40 °C. The compound reacts with D2 to afford [D1D](0), but not mixed isotopomers such as [H1D](0). The dihydride undergoes oxidation with Fc(+) under CO to give [1(CO)](+) and H2. Protonation in MeCN solution gives [H1(NCMe)](+) and H2. Carbonylation converts [H1H](0) into [1(CO)](0).

Abstract
[FeFe]-hydrogenases are dihydrogen-evolving metalloenzymes that are able to combine substrate binding and redox functionalities, a feature that has important bearing on their efficiency. New-generation bioinspired systems such as Fe(2)[(SCH(2))(2)NBn](CO)(3)(Cp*Fe(C(5)Me(4)CH(2)PEt(2)))(dppv) were shown to mimic H(2) oxidation and splitting processes performed by the [FeFe]-hydrogenase/ferredoxin system, and key mechanistic aspects of such reaction are theoretically investigated in the present contribution. We found that H(2) binding and heterolytic cleavage take place concomitantly on DFT models of the synthetic catalyst, due to a substrate-dependent intramolecular redox process that promotes dihydrogen activation. Therefore, formation of an iron-dihydrogen complex as a reaction intermediate is excluded in the biomimetic system, at variance with the case of the enzyme. H(2) uptake at the synthetic system also requires an energetically disfavored isomerization of the amine group acting as a base during splitting. A possible strategy to stabilize the conformation competent for H(2) binding is proposed, along with an analysis of the reactivity of a triiron complex in which di(thiomethyl)amine--the chelating group naturally occurring in [FeFe]-hydrogenases--substitutes the benzyl-containing dithiolate ligand.

Abstract
Treatment of Fe(2)(pdt)(CO)(4)(dppv) (1) with aryldiazonium salts affords the 34e(-) adducts [Fe(2)(pdt)(μ-N(2)Ar)(CO)(4)(dppv)](+) (pdt(2-) = 1,3-propanedithiolate, dppv = cis-C(2)H(2)(PPh(2))(2)). Under some conditions, the same reaction gave substantial amounts of [1](+), the product of electron-transfer. Consistent with the influence of electron transfer in the reactions of some electrophiles with Fe(I)Fe(I) dithiolates, the reaction of [Me(3)S(2)](+) and Fe(2)(pdt)(CO)(4)(dppbz) was found to give [Fe(2)(pdt)(CO)(4)(dppbz)](+) as well as Me(2)S and Me(2)S(2) (dppbz = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene).

Abstract
Formaldehyde-a rapid and reversible inhibitor of hydrogen evolution by [FeFe]-hydrogenases-binds with a strong potential dependence that is almost complementary to that of CO. Whereas exogenous CO binds tightly to the oxidized state known as H(ox) but very weakly to a state two electrons more reduced, formaldehyde interacts most strongly with the latter. Formaldehyde thus intercepts increasingly reduced states of the catalytic cycle, and density functional theory calculations support the proposal that it reacts with the H-cluster directly, most likely targeting an otherwise elusive and highly reactive Fe-hydrido (Fe-H) intermediate.

Abstract
A series of mixed-valence nickel-iron dithiolates is described. Oxidation of (diphosphine)Ni(dithiolate)Fe(CO)(3) complexes 1, 2, and 3 with ferrocenium salts affords the corresponding tricarbonyl cations [(dppe)Ni(pdt)Fe(CO)(3)](+) ([1](+)), [(dppe)Ni(edt)Fe(CO)(3)](+) ([2](+)) and [(dcpe)Ni(pdt)Fe(CO)(3)](+) ([3](+)), respectively, where dppe = Ph(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PPh(2), dcpe = Cy(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PCy(2), (Cy = cyclohexyl), pdtH(2) = HSCH(2)CH(2)CH(2)SH, and edtH(2) = HSCH(2)CH(2)SH. The cation [2](+) proved unstable, but the propanedithiolates are robust. IR and EPR spectroscopic measurements indicate that these species exist as C(s)-symmetric species. Crystallographic characterization of [3]BF(4) shows that Ni is square planar. Interaction of [1]BF(4) with P-donor ligands (L) afforded a series of substituted derivatives of type [(dppe)Ni(pdt)Fe(CO)(2)L]BF(4) for L = P(OPh)(3) ([4a]BF(4)), P(p-C(6)H(4)Cl)(3) ([4b]BF(4)), PPh(2)(2-py) ([4c]BF(4)), PPh(2)(OEt) ([4d]BF(4)), PPh(3) ([4e]BF(4)), PPh(2)(o-C(6)H(4)OMe) ([4f]BF(4)), PPh(2)(o-C(6)H(4)OCH(2)OMe) ([4g]BF(4)), P(p-tol)(3) ([4h]BF(4)), P(p-C(6)H(4)OMe)(3) ([4i]BF(4)), and PMePh(2) ([4j]BF(4)). EPR analysis indicates that ethanedithiolate [2](+) exists as a single species at 110 K, whereas the propanedithiolate cations exist as a mixture of two conformers, which are proposed to be related through a flip of the chelate ring. Mössbauer spectra of 1 and oxidized S = 1/2 [4e]BF(4) are both consistent with a low-spin Fe(I) state. The hyperfine coupling tensor of [4e]BF(4) has a small isotropic component and significant anisotropy. DFT calculations using the BP86, B3LYP, and PBE0 exchange-correlation functionals agree with the structural and spectroscopic data, suggesting that the SOMOs in complexes of the present type are localized in an Fe(I)-centered d(z(2)) orbital. The DFT calculations allow an assignment of oxidation states of the metals and rationalization of the conformers detected by EPR spectroscopy. Treatment of [1](+) with CN(-) and compact basic phosphines results in complex reactions. With dppe, [1](+) undergoes quasi-disproportionation to give 1 and the diamagnetic complex [(dppe)Ni(pdt)Fe(CO)(2)(dppe)](2+) ([5](2+)), which features square-planar Ni linked to an octahedral Fe center.
