Abstract
We have produced a novel indium-based metallocycle complex (In-MeSH), which we initially observed as an unanticipated side-product in metal-organic framework (MOF) syntheses. The serendipitously synthesized metallocycle forms via the acid-catalysed decomposition of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) during solvothermal reactions in the presence of indium nitrate, dimethylformamide and nitric acid. A search through the Cambridge Structural Database revealed isostructural zinc, ruthenium and palladium metallocycle complexes formed by other routes. The ruthenium analogue is catalytically active and the In-MeSH structure similarly displays accessible open metal sites around the outside of the ring. Furthermore, this study also gives access to the relatively uncommon oxidation state of In(II), the targeted synthesis of which can be challenging. In(II) complexes have been reported as having potentially important applications in areas such as catalytic water splitting.

Abstract
We report colour/luminescence colour changes of M[Ru(bpy)(CN)4] crystal (M2+ = Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). The X-ray crystallographic study revealed that the crystals are constructed from linear-chains of {[Ru(bpy)(CN)4][Ca(H2O)5]}n, {[Ru(bpy)(CN)4][Sr(H2O)6]}n, and {[Ru(bpy)(CN)4]2[Ba(H2O)5]2(μ-H2O)2}n, respectively. Ru(II) complex linear chains and the hydrophilic channels composed of M2+ ion and water along them enable reversible water sorption/desorption without collapse of crystals responsible for the colour change. The emission spectra of Ca2+ and Sr2+ salts are remarkably shifted to the red side when the temperature was increased from 296 to 500 K, while Ba2+ salt shows a slight shift in the emission spectrum during the heating. The change in the interaction of M2+ ion to the equatorial CN ligand depending on the number of hydrated water molecules effectively contributes to the luminescence colour change for Ca2+ and Sr2+ salts. FT-IR spectra after heating at 473 K show the high-frequency shifts in the CN stretching mode for Sr2+ salt, while no remarkable peak shifts are observed for Ca2+ and Ba2+ salts. Thermogravimetry results indicate that heating over 470 K leads to the desorption of 5H2O from all salts, resulting in {[Ru(bpy)(CN)4][Ca]}n, {[Ru(bpy)(CN)4][Sr(H2O)]}n, and {[Ru(bpy)(CN)4]2[Ba]2(μ-H2O)2}n for linear chains. The change in the hydration structure for M2+ ions regulates the shift of CN stretching modes.

Abstract
A new class of luminescent bis(bipyridyl) Ru(ii) pyridyl acyclic carbene complexes with environmentally-sensitive dimerization equilibrium have been developed. Owing to the involvement of the orbitals of the diaminocarbene ligand in the emissive excited state, the phosphorescence properties of these complexes are strongly affected by H-bonding interactions with various H-bonding donor/acceptor molecules. With the remarkable differences in the emission properties of the monomer, dimer, and H-bonded amine adducts together with the change of the dimerization equilibrium, these complexes can be used as luminescent gas sensors for humidity, ammonia, and amine vapors. With the responses to amines and humidity and the corresponding change in the luminescence properties, a proof-of-principle for binary optical data storage with a reversible concealment process has been described.

Abstract
Supramolecular photocatalysts in which Ru(ii) photosensitizer and Re(i) catalyst units are connected to each other by an ethylene linker are among the best known, most effective and durable photocatalytic systems for CO2 reduction. In this paper we report, for the first time, time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectra of three of these binuclear complexes to uncover why the catalysts function so efficiently. Selective excitation of the Ru unit with a 532 nm laser pulse induces slow intramolecular electron transfer from the 3MLCT excited state of the Ru unit to the Re unit, with rate constants of (1.0-1.1) × 104 s-1 as a major component and (3.5-4.3) × 106 s-1 as a minor component, in acetonitrile. The produced charge-separated state has a long lifetime, with charge recombination rate constants of only (6.5-8.4) × 104 s-1. Thus, although it has a large driving force (-ΔG0CR ∼ 2.6 eV), this process is in the Marcus inverted region. On the other hand, in the presence of 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide (BNAH), reductive quenching of the excited Ru unit proceeds much faster (kq[BNAH (0.2 M)] = (3.5-3.8) × 106 s-1) than the abovementioned intramolecular oxidative quenching, producing the one-electron-reduced species (OERS) of the Ru unit. Nanosecond TRIR data clearly show that intramolecular electron transfer from the OERS of the Ru unit to the Re unit (kET > 2 × 107 s-1) is much faster than from the excited state of the Ru unit, and that it is also faster than the reductive quenching process of the excited Ru unit by BNAH. To measure the exact value of kET, picosecond TRIR spectroscopy and a stronger reductant were used. Thus, in the case of the binuclear complex with tri(p-fluorophenyl)phosphine ligands (RuRe(FPh)), for which intramolecular electron transfer is expected to be the fastest among the three binuclear complexes, in the presence of 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (BIH), kET was measured as kET = (1.4 ± 0.1) × 109 s-1. This clearly shows that intramolecular electron transfer in these RuRe binuclear supramolecular photocatalysts is not the rate-determining process in the photocatalytic reduction of CO2, which is one of the main reasons why they work so efficiently.

Abstract
This work involved a detailed investigation into the infrared vibrational spectra of ruthenium polypyridyl complexes, specifically heteroleptic [Ru(bpy)2(bpm)](2+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and bpm = 2,2'-bipyrimidine) and homoleptic [Ru(bpy)3](2+), in the excited triplet state. Transient spectra were acquired 500 ps after photoexcitation, corresponding to the vibrational ground state of the excited triplet state, using time-resolved infrared spectroscopy. We assigned the observed bands to specific ligands in [Ru(bpy)2(bpm)](2+) based on the results of deuterium substitution and identified the corresponding normal vibrational modes using quantum-chemical calculations. Through this process, the more complex vibrational bands of [Ru(bpy)3](2+) were assigned to normal vibrational modes. The results are in good agreement with the model in which excited electrons are localized on a single ligand. We also found that the vibrational bands of both complexes associated with the ligands on which electrons are little localized appear at approximately 1317 and 1608 cm(-1). These assignments should allow the study of the reaction dynamics of various photofunctional systems including ruthenium polypyridyl complexes.

Abstract
Catalytic transition-metal complexes often occur in several conformations that exchange rapidly (<ms) in solution so that their spatial structures are difficult to characterize with conventional methods. Here, we determine specific bond angles in the two rapidly exchanging solution conformations of the hydroformylation catalyst (xantphos)Rh(CO)2H using two-dimensional vibrational spectroscopy, a method that can be applied to any catalyst provided that the exchange between its conformers occurs on a time scale of a few picoseconds or slower. We find that, in one of the conformations, the OC-Rh-CO angle deviates significantly from the canonical value in a trigonal-bipyramidal structure. On the basis of complementary density functional calculations, we ascribe this effect to attractive van der Waals interaction between the CO and the xantphos ligand.

Abstract
To improve the emission and excited-state properties of luminescent cyanometalates, new classes of highly solvatochromic luminescent cyanoruthenium(II) and cyanoruthenate(II) complexes of the general formulae [Ru(PR3)2(CN)2(NN)] and K[Ru(PR3)(CN)3(NN)], respectively, were developed. These complexes could be readily synthesized through the ligand-substitution reaction of K2[Ru(CN)4(PR3)2] with a diimine ligand. The geometrical isomerism of these complexes was characterized by using various spectroscopic techniques. Their photophysical properties, solvatochromism, and electrochemistry have also been investigated. Our detailed study showed that many of these complexes exhibited extremely environmentally sensitive emissions and significantly improved emission quantum efficiencies and lifetimes compared with the well-studied tetracyanoruthenate systems.

Abstract
A series of mononuclear complexes of the type [Pt(Bu(2)cat)(4,4'-R(2)-bipy)] [where Bu(2)cat is the dianion of 3,5-(t)Bu(2)-catechol and R = H, (t)Bu, or C(O)NEt(2)] and analogous dinuclear complexes based on the "back-to-back" bis-catechol ligand 3,3',4,4'-tetrahydroxybiphenyl have been studied in detail in both their ground and excited states by a range of physical methods including electrochemistry, UV/vis/near-IR, IR, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroelectrochemistry, and time-resolved IR (TRIR) and transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations have been performed to support these studies, which provide a detailed picture of the ground- and excited-state electronic structures, and excited-state dynamics, of these complexes. Notable observations include the following: (i) for the first time, the lowest-energy catecholate → bipyridine (bpy) ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LL'CT) excited states of these chromophores have been studied by TRIR spectroscopy, showing a range of transient bands associated with the bpy radical anion and semiquinone species, and back-electron-transfer occurring in hundreds of picoseconds; (ii) strong electronic coupling between the two catecholate units in the bridging ligand of the dinuclear complexes results in a delocalized, planar (class 3) "mixed-valence" catecholate(2-)/semiquinone(•-) state formed by one-electron oxidation of the bridging ligand; (iii) in the LL'CT excited state of the dinuclear complexes, the bridging ligand is symmetrical and delocalized, whereas the bpy radical anion is localized at one terminus of the complex. This study is the first example of an investigation of excited-state behavior in platinum(II) catecholate complexes, performed with the use of picosecond TRIR and femtosecond TA spectroscopy.
