Abstract
The quest for planar hypercoordinate atoms (phA) beyond six has predominantly focused on transition metals, with dodecacoordination being the highest reported thus far. Extending this bonding scenario to main-group elements, which typically lack d orbitals despite their larger atomic radius, has posed significant challenges. Intrigued by the potentiality of covalent bonding formation using the d orbitals of the heavier alkaline-earth metals (Ae = Ca, Sr, Ba), the so-called "honorary transition metals", we aim to push the boundaries of planar hypercoordination. By including rings formed by 12-15 atoms of boron-carbon and Ae centers, we propose a design scheme of 180 candidates with a phA. Further systematic screening, structural examination, and stability assessments identified 10 potential clusters with a planar hypercoordinate alkaline-earth metal (phAe) as the lowest-energy form. These unconventional structures embody planar dodeca-, trideca-, tetradeca-, and pentadecacoordinate atoms. Chemical bonding analyses reveal the important role of Ae d orbitals in facilitating covalent interactions between the central Ae atom and the surrounding boron-carbon rings, thereby establishing a new record for coordination numbers in the two-dimensional realm.

Abstract
Spontaneous symmetry-breaking is common in chemical and physical systems. Here, we show that by adding an electron to the C7v PbB8 cluster, which consists of a planar B8 disk with the Pb atom situated along the C7 axis, the Pb atom spontaneously moves to the off-axis position in the PbB8- anion. Photoelectron spectroscopy of PbB8- reveals a broad ground-state transition and a large energy gap, suggesting a highly stable closed-shell PbB8 borozene complex and a significant geometry change upon electron detachment. Quantum chemistry calculations indicate that the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the C7v PbB8 cluster is a degenerate π orbital mainly consisting of the Pb 6px and 6py atomic orbitals. Occupation of one of the 6p orbitals spontaneously break the C7v symmetry in the anion due to the Jahn-Teller effect. The large amplitude of the position change of Pb in PbB8- relative to PbB8 is surprising owing to bonding interactions between the Pb 6p orbital with the π orbital of the B8 borozene.

Abstract
The distinction in coordination modes of metal complexes leads to their versatile structural features and unique properties. Here, we report two tetradentate Schiff base ligands (H2L1 and H2L2) bearing N2O2 donor sets, tactically selected to provide distinct coordination modes with different metal ions. The ligands were utilized to synthesize their organotin(IV) (1-4) and vanadium(V) (5) derivatives. The synthesized compounds were characterized using elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, multi-nuclei NMR (1H, 13C, and 119Sn) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The organotin(IV) derivatives (1-4) displayed hepta-coordination around both the Sn centres as they were achieved in their dimeric form. Contrariwise, the vanadium(V) compound (5) was isolated as a mononuclear entity exhibiting penta-coordinated geometry around the vanadium centre. The variation in the coordination modes was evident in their UV-vis and fluorescence spectra. The organotin(IV) compounds (1-4) exhibited a strong emission band centred at 468 nm when excited at a wavelength of 360 nm whereas the vanadium(V) (5) derivative displayed poor fluorogenic response. Compound 1 was further explored for the fluorogenic chemo-sensing of permanganate ions (MnO4-) amongst various anions by quenching response. A detailed investigation of the recognition of permanganate ions was accomplished by spectrofluorometric, spectroscopic (119Sn NMR), mass spectrometric, and computational studies.

Abstract
Multi-layer molecular rotors represent a class of unique combination of topology and bonding, featuring a barrier-free rotation of one layer with respect to other layers. This emerging fluxional behavior has been found in a few doped boron clusters. Herein, we strongly enrich this intriguing family followed by an effective design strategy, summarized as essential factors: i) considerable electrostatic interactions originated from a strong charge transfer between layers; ii) the absence of strong covalent bonds between layers; and iii) fully delocalized σ/π electrons from at least one layer. We found that planar hypercoordinate motifs consisting of monocyclic boron rings and metals with σ + π dual aromaticity can be regarded as one promising layer, which can support the suspended X2 (X = Zn, Cd, Hg) dimers. By detailed investigations of thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities of 60 species, eventually, MB7 X2 - and MB8 X2 (X = Zn, Cd; M = Be, Ru, Os; Be works only for Zn-based cases) clusters were verified to be the global-minimum two-layer molecular rotors. Especially, their electronic structure analyses vividly confirm the practicability of the electronic structure requirements mentioned above for designing multi-layer molecular rotors.

Abstract
Different from conventional materials, structures with a negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) contract/expand laterally under a longitudinal compressive/tensile strain, usually exhibiting peculiar features. Through first-principles calculations, we investigate the electronic and transport properties of Pd9B16 molecules. Its Poisson's ratio is found to be negative under uniaxial strain along a specific direction. By contacting with Au nanowires, atomic Au chains and atomic C chain electrodes, two kinds of transitions for transmission states could be realized by the modulation of the strain and the contacting site, i.e., metallic-semiconducting transition and spin polarized-unpolarized transition. Further analysis shows that it is the suppression and shifting of density of states, caused by the strain or contacting electrodes, that trigger the transitions. Those findings combine NPR and spintronics at the single-molecule level, which may throw light on the development of nanoelectronic devices.

Abstract
Planar pentacoordinate zinc group elements, (M = Zn, Cd, Hg) were computationally found to be at a global minimum in Li5M+ clusters. The stability of these clusters is due to the presence of multicentric bonds. The central element (Zn, Cd, Hg) in each cluster features a negative oxidation state owing to the in-plane electron donation by the Li5+ framework. A similar global minimum planar pentacoordinate structure is found in Na5Zn+ and Na5Cd+ clusters.

Abstract
In the last decades, experimental techniques in conjunction with theoretical analyses have revealed the surprising structural diversity of boron clusters. Although the 2D to 3D transition thresholds are well-established, there is no certainty about the factors that determine the geometry adopted by these systems. The structural transformation induced by doping usually yields a minimum energy structure with a boron skeleton entirely different from that of the bare cluster. This review summarizes those clusters no larger than 40 boron atoms where one or two dopants show a radical transformation of the structure. Although the structures of these systems are not easy to predict, they often adopt familiar shapes such as umbrella-like, wheel, tubular, and cages in various cases.

Abstract
Transition-metal-centered monocyclic boron wheels are important candidates in the family of planar hypercoordinate species that show intriguing structure, stability and bonding situation. Through the detailed potential energy surface explorations of MB9− (M = Fe, Ru, Os) clusters, we introduce herein OsB9− to be a new member in the transition-metal-centered borometallic molecular wheel gallery. Previously, FeB9− and RuB9− clusters were detected by photoelectron spectroscopy and the structures were reported to have singlet D9h symmetry. Our present results show that the global minimum for FeB9− has a molecular wheel-like structure in triplet spin state with Cs symmetry, whereas its heavier homologues are singlet molecular wheels with D9h symmetry. Chemical bonding analyses show that RuB9− and OsB9− display a similar type of electronic structure, where the dual σ + π aromaticity, originated from three delocalized σ bonds and three delocalized π bonds, accounts for highly stable borometallic molecular wheels.

Abstract
Upon strain, most materials shrink normal to the direction of applied strain. Similarly, if a material is compressed, it will expand in the direction orthogonal to the pressure. Few materials, those of negative Poisson ratio, show the opposite behavior. Here, we show an unprecedented feature, a material that expands normal to the direction of stress, regardless if it is strained or compressed. Such behavior, namely, half-auxeticity, is demonstrated for a borophene sheet stabilized by decorating Pd atoms. We explore Pd-decorated borophene, identify three stable phases of which one has this peculiar property of half auxeticity. After carefully analyzing stability and mechanical and electronic properties we explore the origin of this very uncommon behavior and identify it as a structural feature that may also be employed to design further 2D nanomaterials.

Abstract
Transition-metal-centered monocyclic boron wheel clusters (M©B n q) represent a family of interesting borometallic compounds with double aromaticity. A variety of early and late transition metal atoms have been found to form such structures with high symmetries and various B n ring sizes. Here we report a combined photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum-chemistry theoretical study of two M©B n- clusters from the middle of the transition metal series: Re©B8- and Re©B9-. Global minimum structure searches revealed that ReB8- adopts a pseudo- C8 v structure while ReB9- is a perfectly planar D9 h molecular wheel. Chemical bonding analyses showed that both clusters exhibit σ and π double aromaticity and obey the electronic design principle for metal-centered borometallic molecular wheels. The central Re atoms are found to possess unusually low oxidation states of +I in Re©B8- and +II in Re©B9-, i.e., the Re atom behaves similarly to late transition metal elements (Ru, Fe, Co, Rh, Ir) in the M©B n- molecular wheels. These two clusters become new members of the family of transition-metal-centered monocyclic borometallic molecular wheels, which may be viable for chemical syntheses with appropriate ligands.

Abstract
Because of their interesting structures and bonding and potentials as motifs for new nanomaterials, size-selected boron clusters have received tremendous interest in recent years. In particular, boron cluster anions (Bn-) have allowed systematic joint photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical studies, revealing predominantly two-dimensional structures. The discovery of the planar B36 cluster with a central hexagonal vacancy provided the first experimental evidence of the viability of 2D borons, giving rise to the concept of borophene. The finding of the B40 cage cluster unveiled the existence of fullerene-like boron clusters (borospherenes). Metal-doping can significantly extend the structural and bonding repertoire of boron clusters. Main-group metals interact with boron through s/p orbitals, resulting in either half-sandwich-type structures or substitutional structures. Transition metals are more versatile in bonding with boron, forming a variety of structures including half-sandwich structures, metal-centered boron rings, and metal-centered boron drums. Transition metal atoms have also been found to be able to be doped into the plane of 2D boron clusters, suggesting the possibility of metalloborophenes. Early studies of di-metal-doped boron clusters focused on gold, revealing ladder-like boron structures with terminal gold atoms. Recent observations of highly symmetric Ta2B6- and Ln2Bn- (n = 7-9) clusters have established a family of inverse sandwich structures with monocyclic boron rings stabilized by two metal atoms. The study of size-selected boron and doped-boron clusters is a burgeoning field of research. Further investigations will continue to reveal more interesting structures and novel chemical bonding, paving the foundation for new boron-based chemical compounds and nanomaterials.

Abstract
We studied the stability of several borophene layers on an Al(111) surface and found a structure called 9R using ab initio calculations. This layer competes with χ3 and β12 borophene layers and is made up of boron nonagons that form a network of hexagonal boron double chains. Remarkably, it has no B6 hexagon unlike other borophene layers. All three layers lie significantly lower in energy than the honeycomb layer recently reported on the Al(111) surface [W. Li, et al., Sci. Bull., 2018, 63, 282]. We discuss the structural stability and electronic structures of different borophene layers in light of the role of the filling factor f of boron atoms in boron hexagons in a honeycomb layer as well as charge transfer from the Al substrate to the borophene layer as obtained from the Bader charge analysis. The electron localization function shows that the 9R layer has two-center bonding within the nonagon rings and three-center bonding between the rings. Calculations of the phonon spectra show that a free 9R layer is dynamically stable raising the hope of its isolation. The electronic structure shows that in all cases the borophene layer is metallic.

Abstract
This computational study identifies the rhombic D2hC2 (BeH)4 (2a) to be a species featuring double planar tetracoordinate carbons (ptCs). Aromaticity and the peripheral BeBeBeBe bonding around CC core contribute to the stabilization of the ptC structure. Although the ptC structure is not a global minimum, its high kinetic stability and its distinct feature of having a bonded C2 core from having two separated carbon atoms in the global minimum and other low-lying minima could make the ptC structure to be preferred if the carbon source is dominated by C2 species. The electron deficiency of the BeH group allows the ptC species to serve as building blocks to construct large/nanostructures, such as linear chains, planar sheets, and tubes, via intermolecular hydrogen-bridged bonds (HBBs). Formation of one HBB bond releases more than 30.0 kcal/mol of energy, implying the highly exothermic formation processes and the possibility to synthesize these nano-size structures.

Abstract
Using density functional theory with the TPSSh functional and the 6-311+G(d) basis set, we extensively searched for the global minima of two metallic atoms doped boron clusters B6M2, B7M2, B12M2 and B14M2 with transition metal element M being Co and Fe. Structural identifications reveal that B7Co2, B7Fe2 and B7CoFe clusters have global minima in a B-cyclic motif, in which a perfectly planar B7 is coordinated with two metallic atoms placed along the C7 axis. The B6 cluster is too small to form a cycle with the presence of two metals. Similarly, the B12 cluster is not large enough to stabilize the metallic dimer within a double ring 2 × B6 tube. The doped B14M2 clusters including B14Co2, B14Fe2 and B14CoFe have a double ring 2 × B7 tubular shape in which one metal atom is encapsulated by the B14 tube and the other is located at an exposed position. Dissociation energies demonstrate that while bimetallic cyclic cluster B7M2 prefers a fragmentation channel that generates the B7 global minimum plus metallic dimer, the tubular structure B14M2 tends to dissociate giving a bimetallic cyclic structure B7M2 and a B@B6 cluster. The enhanced stability of the bimetallic doped boron clusters considered can be understood from the stabilizing interactions between the anti-bonding MOs of metal-metal dimers and the levels of a disk aromatic configuration (for bimetallic cyclic structures), or the eigenstates of the B14 tubular form (in case of bimetallic tubular structure).

Abstract
We perform a systematical investigation on the geometry, thermodynamic/kinetic stability, and bonding nature of low-lying isomers of BnPt (n=1-6) at the CCSD(T)/[6-311+G(d)/LanL2DZ]//B3LYP/[6-311+G(d)/LanL2DZ] level. The most stable isomers of BnPt (n=1-6) adopt planar or quasi-planar structure. BnPt (n=2-5) clusters can be generated by capping a Pt atom on the B-B edge of pure boron clusters. However, For B6Pt with non-planar structure, a single doped Pt atom significantly affects the shape of the host boron cluster. The dopant of the Pt atom can improve the stability of pure boron clusters. The valence molecular orbital (VMO), electron localization function (ELF), and Mayer bond order (MBO) are applied to gain insight into the bonding nature of BnPt (n=2-6) isomers. The aromaticity for some isomers of BnPt (n=2-6) is analyzed and discussed in terms of VMO, ELF, adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP), and nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) analyses. Results obtained from the energy and cluster decomposition analyses demonstrate that B2Pt and B4Pt exhibits as highly stable. Importantly, some isomers of BnPt (n=2-5) are stable both thermodynamically and kinetically, which are observable in future experiment.

Abstract
Geometries associated with relative stabilities and energy gaps of the Mo -doped boron clusters have been investigated systematically by using density functional theory. The critical size of Mo -encapsulated B n structures emerges as n = 10, the evaluated relative stabilities in term of the calculated fragmentation energies reveal that the MoB 6 has enhanced stabilities over their neighboring clusters. Furthermore, the calculated polarities of the MoB n reveal that the hypercoordinated planar MoB 10 wheel is a weakened polar molecule and MoB 11 ring is a nonpolar molecule, and aromatic properties are discussed. Additionally, the MoB 10 cluster with smaller highest occupied molecular orbital–lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO–LUMO) gap is supposed to be stronger chemical activity and smaller chemical hardness. Moreover, the recorded natural populations show that the charges transfer from boron framework to Mo atom. It should be pointed out that the remarkable charge-transfer features of MoB n clusters are distinctly similar to those of transitional metal (TM)-doped Si n clusters; growth-pattern of the TMBn depends on the doped TM impurity.

Abstract
Atomic clusters have intermediate properties between that of individual atoms and bulk solids, which provide fertile ground for the discovery of new molecules and novel chemical bonding. In addition, the study of small clusters can help researchers design better nanosystems with specific physical and chemical properties. From recent experimental and computational studies, we know that small boron clusters possess planar structures stabilized by electron delocalization both in the σ and π frameworks. An interesting boron cluster is B(9)(-), which has a D(8h) molecular wheel structure with a single boron atom in the center of a B(8) ring. This ring in the D(8h)-B(9)(-) cluster is connected by eight classical two-center, two-electron bonds. In contrast, the cluster's central boron atom is bonded to the peripheral ring through three delocalized σ and three delocalized π bonds. This bonding structure gives the molecular wheel double aromaticity and high electronic stability. The unprecedented structure and bonding pattern in B(9)(-) and other planar boron clusters have inspired the designs of similar molecular wheel-type structures. But these mimics instead substitute a heteroatom for the central boron. Through recent experiments in cluster beams, chemists have demonstrated that transition metals can be doped into the center of the planar boron clusters. These new metal-centered monocyclic boron rings have variable ring sizes, M©B(n) and M©B(n)(-) with n = 8-10. Using size-selected anion photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, researchers have characterized these novel borometallic molecules. Chemists have proposed a design principle based on σ and π double aromaticity for electronically stable borometallic cluster compounds, featuring a highly coordinated transition metal atom centered inside monocyclic boron rings. The central metal atom is coordinatively unsaturated in the direction perpendicular to the molecular plane. Thus, chemists may design appropriate ligands to synthesize the molecular wheels in the bulk. In this Account, we discuss these recent experimental and theoretical advances of this new class of aromatic borometallic compounds, which contain a highly coordinated central transition metal atom inside a monocyclic boron ring. Through these examples, we show that atomic clusters can facilitate the discovery of new structures, new chemical bonding, and possibly new nanostructures with specific, advantageous properties.
