Abstract
Reaction of the N-heterocylic carbene ligand i PrIm (L1 ) and lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (TMSA) as a base with UCl4 resulted in U(IV) and U(V) complexes. Uranium's +V oxidation state in (HL1 )2 [U(V)(TMSI)Cl5 ] (TMSI=trimethylsilylimido) (2) was confirmed by HERFD-XANES measurements. Solid state characterization by SC-XRD and geometry optimisation of [U(IV)(L1 )2 (TMSA)Cl3 ] (1) indicated a silylamido ligand mediated inverse trans influence (ITI). The ITI was examined regarding different metal oxidation states and was compared to transition metal analogues by theoretical calculations.

Abstract
Divalent lanthanide and alkaline-earth complexes supported by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been accessed by redox-transmetalation between air-stable NHC-AgI complexes and the corresponding metals. By using the small ligand 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (IMe), two series of isostructural complexes were obtained: the tetra-NHC complexes [LnI2 (IMe)4 ] (Ln=Eu and Sm) and the bis-NHC complexes [MI2 (IMe)2 (THF)2 ] (M=Yb, Ca and Sr). In the former, distortions in the NHC coordination were found to originate from intermolecular repulsions in the solid state. Application of the redox-transmetalation strategy with the bulkier 1,3-dimesitylimidazol-2-ylidene (IMes) ligand yielded [SrI2 (IMes)(THF)3 ], while using a similar procedure with Ca metal led to [CaI2 (THF)4 ] and uncoordinated IMes. DFT calculations were performed to rationalise the selective formation of the bis-NHC adduct in [SrI2 (IMe)2 (THF)2 ] and the tetra-NHC adduct in [SmI2 (IMe)4 ]. Since the results in the gas phase point towards preferential formation of the tetra-NHC complexes for both metal centres, the differences between both arrangements are a result of solid-state effects such as slightly different packing forces.

Abstract
The crystal structure of Th(BH4)4 is described. Two of the four BH4- ions are terminal and tridentate (κ3), whereas the other two bridge between neighboring ThIV centers in a κ2,κ2 (i.e., bis-bidentate) fashion. Thus, each thorium center is bound to six BH4- groups by 14 Th-H bonds. The six boron atoms describe a distorted octahedron in which the κ3-BH4- ions are mutually cis; the 14 ligating hydrogen atoms define a highly distorted bicapped hexagonal antiprism. The thorium centers are linked into a polymer consisting of interconnected helical chains wound about 4-fold screw axes. The structures of An(BH4)4 (An = Th, U) were also investigated by DFT. The geometries of [An(BH4)6]2-, [An3(BH4)16]4-, and [An5(BH4)26]6- fragments of the polymeric structures were optimized at the B3LYP and/or PBE levels. Most calculated geometries are 14-coordinate and agree with the experimental structures, but isolated [Th(BH4)6]2- units are predicted to feature 16-coordinate ThIV centers.

Abstract
A comprehensive exploration of the inverse trans-influence (ITI) phenomenon in a series of cis-[UVI(O)(L)Cl4]0/- and trans-[UVI(O)(L)Cl4]0/- complexes involving a wide variety of neutral and anionic unidentate ligands L, using relativistic density functional theory, threw light on the still-intriguing physics of ITI, elucidated its origin, and deployed the ligands L in cis- and trans-ITI sequences (ladders). ITI is produced for the complete set of L in both series of [U(O)(L)Cl4]0/- complexes, but this is not reflected in the thermodynamic stability of the [U(O)(L)Cl4]0/- isomers. In effect the hard and strong σ-donor anionic ligands stabilize the trans isomers, but the opposite is true for the soft σ-donor/π-donor neutral and anionic ligands that stabilize the cis isomers. According to the ITI%(U-L) metrics the hard strong σ-donor anionic ligands exert stronger ITI than the soft σ-donor/π-donor neutral ones, while according to the ITI%(U-O) metrics ITI is produced only for the more stable trans-[U(O)(L)Cl4]0/- isomers involving the anionic ligands. In contrast the neutral ligands in the more stable cis-[U(O)(L)Cl4]0/- isomers produce the normal cis influence (CI). Furthermore, the more electronegative ligands produce stronger ITI. ITI%(U-O) cis- and trans-philicity ladders are also built for both series of complexes employing the isotropic σiso(SO) 17O NMR shielding constants as a sensitive metric of the ITI phenomenon. The NMR ITI%(U-O) metrics are consistent with the ITI%(U-O) ones illustrating that the isotropic 17O NMR shifts are sensitive metrics of the covalency of the multiple U-O bonding mode and, hence, of the ITI phenomenon. Interestingly the 2σ BD(U-O) natural bond orbitals play a key role in tuning the bond length and covalency of the U-O bond through the 2σ(U≡O) → 2σ*(U≡O) hyperconjugative interactions. The assessment of the magnitude of the ITI in the [UVI(O)(L)Cl4]0/- complexes and the recognition of the factors affecting ITI dispose a guide to experimentalists working in the area of uranium chemistry to develop strategies for stabilizing uranium-ligand linkages.

Abstract
The introduction of (N2)3-• radicals into multinuclear lanthanide molecular magnets raised hysteresis temperatures by stimulating strong exchange coupling between spin centers. Radical ligands with larger donor atoms could promote more efficient magnetic coupling between lanthanides to provide superior magnetic properties. Here, we show that heavy chalcogens (S, Se, Te) are primed to fulfill these criteria. The moderately reducing Sm(II) complex, [Sm(N††)2], where N†† is the bulky bis(triisopropylsilyl)amide ligand, can be oxidized (i) by diphenyldichalcogenides E2Ph2 (E = S, Se, Te) to form the mononuclear series [Sm(N††)2(EPh)] (E = S, 1-S; Se, 1-Se, Te, 1-Te); (ii) S8 or Se8 to give dinuclear [{Sm(N††)2}2(μ-η2:η2-E2)] (E = S, 2-S2; Se, 2-Se2); or (iii) with Te═PEt3 to yield [{Sm(N††)2}(μ-Te)] (3). These complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR, FTIR, and electronic spectroscopy; the steric bulk of N†† dictates the formation of mononuclear complexes with chalcogenate ligands and dinuclear species with the chalcogenides. The Lα1 fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption spectra at the Sm L3-edge yielded resolved pre-edge and white-line peaks for 1-S and 2-E2, which served to calibrate our computational protocol in the successful reproduction of the spectral features. This method was employed to elucidate the ground state electronic structures for proposed oxidized and reduced variants of 2-E2. Reactivity is ligand-based, forming species with bridging superchalcogenide (E2)-• and subchalcogenide (E2)3-• radical ligands. The extraordinarily large exchange couplings provided by these dichalcogenide radicals reveal their suitability as potential successors to the benchmark (N2)3-• complexes in molecular magnets.

Abstract
We present the synthesis of a series of new lanthanide(III) complexes supported by a monoanionic bidentate anilidophosphine ligand (N-(2-(diisopropylphosphanyl)-4-methylphenyl)-2,4,6-trimethylanilide, short PN-). The work comprises the characterization of a variety of heteroleptic complexes containing either one or two PN ligands as well as a study on further functionalization possibilities. The new heteroleptic complexes cover selected examples over the whole lanthanide(III) series including lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, and lutetium. In case of the two diamagnetic metal cations lanthanum(III) and lutetium(III), we have furthermore studied the influence of the lanthanide ion (early vs. late) on the reactivity of these complexes. Thereby we found that the radius of the lanthanide ion has a major influence on the reactivity. Using sterically demanding, multidentate ligand systems, e.g., cyclopentadienide (Cp-), we found that the lanthanum complex La(PN)2Cl (1-La) reacts well to the corresponding cyclopentadienide complex, while for Lu(PN)2Cl (1-Lu) no reaction was observed under any conditions tested. On the contrary, employing monodentate ligands such as mesitolate, thiomesitolate, 2,4,6-trimethylanilide or 2,4,6-trimethylphenylphosphide, results in the clean formation of the desired complexes for both lanthanum and lutetium. All complexes have been studied by various techniques, including multi nuclear NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. 31P NMR spectroscopy was furthermore used to evaluate the presence of open coordination sites on the complexes using coordinating and noncoordinating solvents, and as a probe for estimating the Ce-P distance in the corresponding complexes. Additionally, we present cyclic voltammetry (CV) data for Ce(PN)2Cl (1-Ce), La(PN)2Cl (1-La), Ce(PN)(HMDS)2 (8-Ce) and La(PN)(HMDS)2 (8-La) (with HMDS = hexamethyldisilazide, (Me3Si)2N-) exploring the potential of the anilidophosphane ligand framework to stabilize a potential Ce(IV) ion.

Abstract
The synthesis, characterization, and theoretical analysis of meridional americium tribromide tris(tricyclohexylphosphine oxide), mer-AmBr3(OPcy3)3, has been achieved and is compared with its early lanthanide (La to Nd) analogs. The data show that homo trans ligands display significantly shorter bonds than the cis or hetero trans ligands. This is particularly pronounced in the americium compound. DFT along with multiconfigurational CASSCF calculations show that the contraction of the bonds relates qualitatively with overall covalency, i.e. americium shows the most covalent interactions compared to lanthanides. However, the involvement of the 5p and 6p shells in bonding follows a different order, namely cerium > neodymium ∼ americium. This study provides further insight into the mechanisms by which ITI operates in low-valent f-block complexes.

Abstract
FEUDAL (f’s essentially unaffected, d’s accommodate ligands) is a longstanding bonding model in actinide chemistry, in which metal-ligand binding uses 6d-orbitals, with the 5f remaining non-bonding. The inverse-trans-influence (ITI) is a case where the model may break down, and it has been suggested that ionic and covalent effects work synergistically in the ITI. Here, we report an experimentally grounded computational study that quantitatively explores the ITI, and in particular the structure-directing role of f-orbital covalency. Strong donor ligands generate a cis-ligand-directing electrostatic potential (ESP) at the metal centre. When f-orbital participation, via overlap-driven covalency, becomes dominant via short actinide-element distances, this ionic ESP effect is overcome, favouring a trans-ligand-directed geometry. This study contradicts the accepted ITI paradigm in that here ionic and covalent effects work against each other, and suggests a clearly non-FEUDAL, structure-directing role for the f-orbitals. In actinide chemistry, a longstanding bonding model describes metal-ligand binding using 6d-orbitals, with the 5f-orbitals remaining non-bonding. Here the authors explore the inverse-trans-influence — a case where the model breaks down — finding that the f-orbitals play a crucial role in dictating a trans-ligand-directed geometry.

Abstract
To obtain luminescent lanthanide complexes with a low energy LMCT state the 2-(2'-mercaptophenyl)benzothiazolates, Ln(SSN)3, and 2-(2'-mercaptophenyl)benzoxazolates, Ln2(OSN)6 (Ln = Gd, Yb), were synthesized by the reaction of amides Ln[N(SiMe3)2]3 with respective thiophenols. Ytterbium complexes were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Cyclic voltammetry revealed that the deprotonated mercaptophenyl ligands have significantly lower oxidation potentials than their phenoxy analogues and some β-diketones. The photophysical properties of Gd and Yb compounds were studied both in solution and in the solid state. The fluorescence spectra of the compounds in solution display the bands of the keto and enol forms of the ligands. No energy transfer from the organic part to Yb3+ has been detected in solutions of both Yb complexes, whereas in solids an intense metal-centered emission in the near infrared region was observed. The solid Gd compounds exhibited room temperature phosphorescence caused by unusually efficient intersystem crossing facilitated by the essentially reducing properties of OSN and SSN ligands. To explain the sensitization process occurring in solids Yb2(OSN)6 and Yb(SSN)3 a specific non-resonant energy transfer mechanism via a ligand to metal charge transfer state has been proposed. Based on the Yb derivatives, NIR-emitting OLEDs with 860 μW cm-2 maximal irradiance were obtained. Their Gd counterparts showed bright electrophosphorescence (up to 1350 cd m-2) in the devices containing doped emission layers.

The inverse-trans-influence in tetravalent lanthanide and actinide bis(carbene) complexes. Nat Commun 2017; 8:14137. Abstract
Across the periodic table the trans-influence operates, whereby tightly bonded ligands selectively lengthen mutually trans metal-ligand bonds. Conversely, in high oxidation state actinide complexes the inverse-trans-influence operates, where normally cis strongly donating ligands instead reside trans and actually reinforce each other. However, because the inverse-trans-influence is restricted to high-valent actinyls and a few uranium(V/VI) complexes, it has had limited scope in an area with few unifying rules. Here we report tetravalent cerium, uranium and thorium bis(carbene) complexes with trans C=M=C cores where experimental and theoretical data suggest the presence of an inverse-trans-influence. Studies of hypothetical praseodymium(IV) and terbium(IV) analogues suggest the inverse-trans-influence may extend to these ions but it also diminishes significantly as the 4f orbitals are populated. This work suggests that the inverse-trans-influence may occur beyond high oxidation state 5f metals and hence could encompass mid-range oxidation state actinides and lanthanides. Thus, the inverse-trans-influence might be a more general f-block principle.

Abstract
In this paper, we show that trans effects in octahedral complexes can primarily be related to differences in the ability, for a given ligand, to cede electron density to the metal cation under the influence of the ligand at the trans position.

Abstract
Deprotonation of the yttrium-arsine complex [Cp'3Y{As(H)2Mes}] (1) (Cp'=η(5)-C5H4Me, Mes=mesityl) by nBuLi produces the μ-arsenide complex [{Cp'2Y[μ-As(H)Mes]}3] (2). Deprotonation of the As-H bonds in 2 by nBuLi produces [Li(thf)4]2[{Cp'2Y(μ3-AsMes)}3Li], [Li(thf)4]2[3], in which the dianion 3 contains the first example of an arsinidene ligand in rare-earth metal chemistry. The molecular structures of the arsine, arsenide, and arsinidene complexes are described, and the yttrium-arsenic bonding is analyzed by density functional theory.

Abstract
A series of new 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-derivatives having a combination of amide and ketone donor groups as side-arms were prepared, and their complexes with europium(III) studied in detail by high resolution NMR spectroscopy. The chemical shift of the Eu(3+)-bound water resonance, the chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) characteristics of the complexes, and the bound water residence lifetimes (τ(m)) were found to vary dramatically with the chemical structure of the side-arms. Substitution of ketone oxygen donor atoms for amide oxygen donor atoms resulted in an increase in residence water lifetimes (τ(m)) and a decrease in chemical shift of the Eu(3+)-bound water molecule (Δω). These experimental results along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that introduction of weakly donating oxygen atoms in these complexes results in a much weaker ligand field, more positive charge on the Eu(3+) ion, and an increased water residence lifetime as expected for a dissociative mechanism. These results provide new insights into the design of paramagnetic CEST agents with even slower water exchange kinetics that will make them more efficient for in vivo imaging applications.

Abstract
Reductive cleavage of C(6)F(5)SeSeC(6)F(5) with elemental M (M = Zn, Cd, and Hg) in pyridine results in the formation of (py)(2)Zn(SeC(6)F(5))(2), (py)(2)Cd(SeC(6)F(5))(2), and Hg(SeC(6)F(5))(2). Structural characterization of the Zn and Cd compounds reveals tetrahedral coordination environments, while the Hg compound shows a complicated series of linear structures with two short, nearly linear Hg-Se bonds, up to two longer and perpendicular Hg...Se interactions, and no coordinated pyridine ligands. All three compounds exhibit well-defined intermolecular pi-pi-stacking interactions in the solid state. They are volatile and decompose at elevated temperatures to give MSe and either (SeC(6)F(5))(2) or Se(C(6)F(5))(2).
