Cyclometalated Complexes of Palladium(II) and Platinum(II): cis-Configured Homoleptic and Heteroleptic Compounds with Aromatic C&arcraise;N Ligands

Design of carbazole-based platinum complexes with steric hindrance for efficient organic light-emitting diodes

The construction of platinum complexes with high steric hindrance is expected to suppress triple-triplet annihilation and π-π stacking to achieve high-performance organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with low efficiency roll-off. Herein, two large steric hindrance platinum complexes (N-CzPhPtacac and N-CzCF3PhPtacac) were prepared by taking advantage of steric hindrance between the phenyl group on carbazole and the functional group (phenyl and trifluoromethyl substituted phenyl) at the 3-position of a pyridine moiety. Due to the similar electron cloud distribution and gap difference between the HOMO and LUMO, the two complexes showed similar orange-red emission peaks at 590 and 596 nm with high PL quantum yields of 90% and 92% and short excited state lifetimes of 2.77 and 3.08 μs in doped films, respectively. Consequently, OLEDs based on N-CzPhPtacac and N-CzCF3PhPtacac showed maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) values of 15.4% and 18.9%, respectively. Importantly, benefitting from the more stretched spatial configuration from the -CF3 effect, the corresponding OLED exhibited a lower efficiency roll-off, with an EQE of 18.1% at 1000 cd m-2.

Open for Bismuth: Main Group Metal-to-Ligand Charge Transfer

The synthesis, characterization, and photophysical properties of 4- and 6-coordinate Bi³⁺ coordination complexes are reported. Bi(bzq)₃ (1) and [Bi(bzq)₂]Br (2) (bzq = benzo[h]quinoline) are synthesized by reaction of 9-Li-bzq with BiCl₃ and BiBr₃, respectively. Absorption spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and DFT studies suggest that 1 has 42% Bi 6s character in its highest-occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) as a result of six σ* interactions with the bzq ligands. Excitation of 1 at 450 nm results in a broad emission feature at 520 nm, which is rationalized as a metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and phosphorescent emission resulting from bismuth-mediated intersystem crossing (ISC) to a triplet excited state. This excited state revealed a 35 μs lifetime and was quenched in the presence of oxygen. These results demonstrate that useful optoelectronic properties of Bi³⁺ can be accessed through hypercoordination with covalent organobismuth interactions that mimic the electronic structure of lead perovskites.

The Exchange of Cyclometalated Ligands

Reactions of cyclometalated compounds are numerous. This account is focused on one of such reactions, the exchange of cyclometalated ligands, a reaction between a cyclometalated compound and an incoming ligand that replaces a previously cyclometalated ligand to form a new metalacycle: + H-C*~Z ⇄ + H-C~Y. Originally discovered for PdII complexes with Y/Z = N, P, S, the exchange appeared to be a mechanistically challenging, simple, and convenient routine for the synthesis of cyclopalladated complexes. Over four decades it was expanded to cyclometalated derivatives of platinum, ruthenium, manganese, rhodium, and iridium. The exchange, which is also questionably referred to as transcyclometalation, offers attractive synthetic possibilities and assists in disclosing key mechanistic pathways associated with the C-H bond activation by transition metal complexes and C-M bond cleavage. Both synthetic and mechanistic aspects of the exchange are reviewed and discussed.

Structural Mimics of Phenyl Pyridine (ppy) - Substituted, Phosphorescent Cyclometalated Homo and Heteroleptic Iridium(III) Complexes for Organic Light Emitting Diodes - An Overview

Today organic light emitting diodes are a topic of significant academic and industrial research interest. OLED technology is used in commercially available displays, and efforts have been directed to improve this technology. Design and synthesis of phosphorescent based transition metals are capable of harvesting both singlet and triplet excitons and achieve 100 % internal quantum efficiency is an active area of research. Among all the transition metals, iridium is considered a prime candidate for OLEDs due to its prominent photophysical characteristics. In the present review, we have concentrated on the Iridium based homo and heteroleptic complexes that have dissimilar substitutions on phenylpyridine ligands, different ancillary ligands and the effect of substitution on HOMO/LUMO energies and a brief discussion and correlation on the photophysical, electrochemical and device performances of the different complexes have been reviewed for organic light emitting diodes.

Nitroarenes as the Nitrogen Source in Intermolecular Palladium-Catalyzed Aryl C-H Bond Aminocarbonylation Reactions

A three-component palladium-catalyzed aminocarbonylation of aryl and heteroaryl sp² C-H bonds using nitroarenes as the nitrogen source was achieved using Mo(CO)₆ as the reductant and origin of the CO. This intermolecular C-H bond functionalization does not requires any exogenous ligand to be added, and our mechanism experiments indicate that the palladacycle catalyst serves two roles in the aminocarbonylation reaction: reduce the nitroarene to a nitrosoarene and activate the sp² C-H bond.

Subtle Changes to Peripheral Ligands Enable High Turnover Numbers for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation with Supramolecular Photocatalysts

The photocatalytic generation of hydrogen (H2) from protons by two cyclometalated ruthenium-platinum polypyridyl complexes, [Ru(bpy)2(2,5-bpp)PtIS](2+) (1) and [Ru(dceb)2(2,5-bpp)PtIS](2+) (2) [where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, 2,5-bpp = 2,2',5',2″-terpyridine, dceb = 4,4'-di(carboxyethyl)bipyridine, and S = solvent], is reported. Turnover numbers (TONs) for H2 generation were increased by nearly an order of magnitude by the introduction of carboxyethyl ester units, i.e., from 80 for 1P to 650 for 2P after 6 h of irradiation, with an early turnover frequency (TOF) increasing from 15 to 200 h(-1). The TON and TOF values for 2P are among the highest reported to date for supramolecular photocatalysts. The increase correlates with stabilization of the excited states localized on the peripheral ligands of the light-harvesting Ru(II) center.

An Extended Chain and Trinuclear Complexes Based on Pt(II)-M (M = Tl(I), Pb(II)) Bonds: Contrasting Photophysical Behavior

The syntheses and structural characterizations of a Pt-Tl chain [{Pt(bzq)(C6F5)2}Tl(Me2CO)]n 1 and two trinuclear Pt2M clusters (NBu4)[{Pt(bzq)(C6F5)2}2Tl] 2 and [{Pt(bzq)(C6F5)2}2Pb] 3 (bzq = 7,8-benzoquinolinyl), stabilized by donor-acceptor Pt → M bonds, are reported. The one-dimensional heterometallic chain 1 is formed by alternate "Pt(bzq)(C6F5)2" and "Tl(Me2CO)" fragments, with Pt-Tl bond separations in the range of 2.961(1)-3.067(1) Å. The isoelectronic trinuclear complexes 2 (which crystallizes in three forms, namely, 2a, 2b, and 2c) and 3 present a sandwich structure in which the Tl(I) or Pb(II) is located between two "Pt(bzq)(C6F5)2" subunits. NMR studies suggest equilibria in solution implying cleavage and reformation of Pt-M bonds. The lowest-lying absorption band in the UV-vis spectra in CH2Cl2 and tetrahydrofuran (THF) of 1, associated with (1)MLCT/(1)L'LCT (1)[5dπ(Pt) → π*(bzq)]/(1)[(C6F5) → bzq], displays a blue shift in relation to the precursor, suggesting the cleavage of the chain maintaining bimetallic Pt-Tl fragments in solution, also supported by NMR spectroscopy. In 2 and 3, it shows a blue shift in THF and a red shift in CH2Cl2, supporting a more extensive cleavage of the Pt-M bonds in THF solutions than in CH2Cl2, where the trinuclear entities are predominant. The Pt-Tl chain 1 displays in solid state a bright orange-red emission ascribed to (3)MM'CT (M' = Tl). It exhibits remarkable and fast reversible vapochromic and vapoluminescent response to donor vapors (THF and Et2O), related to the coordination/decoordination of the guest molecule to the Tl(I) ion, and mechanochromic behavior, associated with the shortening of the intermetallic Pt-Tl separations in the chain induced by grinding. In frozen solutions (THF, acetone, and CH2Cl2) 1 shows interesting luminescence thermochromism with emissions strongly dependent on the solvent, concentration, and excitation wavelengths. The Pt2Tl complex 2 shows an emission close to 1, ascribed to charge transfer from the platinum fragment to the thallium [(3)(L+L')MM'CT]. 2 also shows vapoluminescent behavior in the presence of vapors of Me2CO, THF, and Et2O, although smaller and slower than those of 1. The trinuclear neutral complex Pt2Pb 3 displays a blue-shift emission band, tentatively assigned to admixture of (3)MM'CT (3)[Pt(d) → Pb(sp)] with some metal-mediated intraligand ((3)ππ/(3)ILCT) contribution. In contrast to 1 and 2, 3 does not show vapoluminescent behavior.

Photophysical and DFT studies on cycloplatinated complexes: modification in luminescence properties by expanding of π-conjugated systems

The luminescent properties of cycloplatinated complexes containing aryl and SMe₂ ligands, [Pt(p-MeC₆H₄)(ĈN)(SMe₂)], (ĈN = benzo[h]quinolate (bzq), 1, or 2-phenylpyridinate (ppy), 2), were investigated in solution and solid state.

Reactions of [PhI(pyridine)2]2+ with model Pd and Pt II/IV redox couples

The results of the reactions of the dicationic iodine(III) family of oxidants [PhI(pyridine)2](2+) with model Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes are described. Depending on the specific reaction pairs, a variety of outcomes are observed. For palladium, Pd(IV) complexes cannot be observed but are implicated in C-C and C-N bond formation for Pd(II) starting materials based on phenylpyridine and 2,2-bipyridine, respectively. Theoretical comparisons with similar processes for -Cl and -OAc rather than pyridine indicate that these provide greater thermodynamic stability, and our results here show that they also give greater kinetic stability (the failure of MP2 methods for these systems is quite dramatic). In contrast, oxidation and delivery of the pyridine ligands gives dicationic Pt(IV) complexes that may be isolated and structurally characterized.

Photophysical properties of cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes: counterintuitive blue shift in emission with an expanded ligand π system

A detailed examination was performed on photophysical properties of phosphorescent cyclometalated (C(^)N)Pt(O(^)O) complexes (ppy)Pt(dpm) (1), (ppy)Pt(acac) (1'), and (bzq)Pt(dpm) (2) and newly synthesized (dbq)Pt(dpm) (3) (C(^)N = 2-phenylpyridine (ppy), benzo[h]quinoline (bzq), dibenzo[f,h]quinoline (dbq); O(^)O = dipivolylmethanoate (dpm), acetylacetonate (acac)). Compounds 1, 1', 2, and 3 were further characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural changes brought about by cyclometalation were determined by comparison with X-ray data from model C(^)N ligand precursors. The compounds emit from metal-perturbed, ligand-centered triplet states (E(0-0) = 479 nm, 1; E(0-0) = 495 nm, 2; E(0-0) = 470 nm, 3) with disparate radiative rate constants (kr = 1.4 × 10(5) s(-1), 1; kr = 0.10 × 10(5) s(-1), 2; kr = 2.6 × 10(5) s(-1), 3). Zero-field splittings of the triplet states (ΔE(III-I) = 11.5 cm(-1), 1'; ΔE(III-I) < 2 cm(-1), 2; ΔE(III-I) = 46.5 cm(-1), 3) were determined using high resolution spectra recorded in Shpol'skii matrices. The fact that the E0-0 energies do not correspond to the extent of π-conjugation in the aromatic C(^)N ligand is rationalized on the basis of structural distortions that occur upon cyclometalation using data from single crystal X-ray analyses of the complexes and ligand precursors along with the triplet state properties evaluated using theoretical calculations. The wide variation in the radiative rate constants and zero-field splittings is also explained on the basis of how changes in the electronic spin density in the C(^)N ligands in the triplet state alter the spin-orbit coupling in the complexes.

Sensitivity of the photophysical properties of organometallic complexes to small chemical changes

We investigate an effective model Hamiltonian for organometallic complexes that are widely used in optoelectronic devices. The two most important parameters in the model are J, the effective exchange interaction between the π and π* orbitals of the ligands, and ε*, the renormalized energy gap between the highest occupied orbitals on the metal and on the ligand. We find that the degree of metal-to-ligand charge transfer character of the lowest triplet state is strongly dependent on the ratio ε*/J. ε* is purely a property of the complex and can be changed significantly by even small variations in the complex's chemistry, such as replacing substituents on the ligands. We find that small changes in ε*/J can cause large changes in the properties of the complex, including the lifetime of the triplet state and the probability of injected charges (electrons and holes) forming triplet excitations. These results give some insight into the observed large changes in the photophysical properties of organometallic complexes caused by small changes in the ligands.
