Abstract
Herein, we report a comprehensive coordination study of the previously reported ligands cyclam, CB-cyclam, TMC, DMC, and CB-DMC and of their C-functional analogues, cyclam-E, CB-cyclam-E, TMC-E, DMC-E, and CB-DMC-E. This group of ligands includes cyclam, cross-bridged cyclams, their di- or tetramethylated derivatives, and the analogues bearing an additional hydroxyethyl group on one β-N position of the ring. The Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes of these macrocycles have been highlighted previously for the biological interest, but the details of their structures in the solid state and in solution remained largely unexplored. In particular, we analyzed the impact that adding noncoordinating N-methyl and C-hydroxyethyl functionalities has in the structures of the complexes. All the Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes were synthesized and investigated using single crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR, electronic absorption, and EPR spectroscopies, along with DFT studies. Dissociation kinetics experiments in acidic conditions and electrochemical studies were also performed. Special attention was paid to analyze the different configurations present in solution and in the solid state, as well as the impact of the C-appended hydroxyethyl group on the coordination behavior. Various ratios of the trans-I, trans-III, and cis-V configurations have been observed depending on the degree of N-methylation and the presence of the ethylene cross-bridge.

Abstract
The dicopper(II) complex of the bimacrocyclic ligand α,α'-bis(5,7-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecan-6-yl)-o-xylene, 2, interacts with selected anions in dimethyl sulfoxide solution according to two different modes: (i) halides (Cl-, Br-, and I-) and N3 - coordinate the two metal centers at the same time between the two macrocyclic subunits that face each other and (ii) anionic species that do not fit the bridging coordination mode (e.g., NCO-, SCN-, CH3COO-, NO3 -, and H2PO4 -) interact with copper(II) ions only at the "external" positions or their interaction is too weak to be detected. Occurrence of the bridging interaction is demonstrated by X-ray crystallographic studies performed on the adduct formed by [Cu2(2)]4+ with azide and by electron paramagnetic resonance investigation, as the anion coordination between the two copper(II) centers induces spin-spin coupling. Isothermal titration calorimetry experiments performed on [Cu2(2)]4+ and, for comparison, on [(5,7-dimethyl-6-benzyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane)copper(II)], representing the mononuclear analogue, allowed determination of thermodynamic parameters (log K, ΔH, and TΔS) associated with the considered complex/anion equilibria. Thermodynamic data showed that adducts formed by [Cu2(2)]4+ with halides and azide benefit from an extra stability that can be explained on the basis of the anion advantage of simultaneously binding the two metal centers, i.e., in terms of the bimacrocyclic effect.

Abstract
The five binuclear nickel(II) complexes have been synthesized by the Schiff base condensation of 1,8-[bis(3-formyl-2-hydroxy-5-methyl)benzyl]-l,4,8,11-tetraazacyclo-tetradecane (PC) with appropriate aliphatic diamines and nickel(II) perchlorate. All the five complexes were characterized by elemental and spectral analysis. The electronic spectra of the complexes show three d-d transition in the range of 550-1055 nm due to 3A2g→3T2g(F), 3A2g→3T1g(F) and 3A2g→3T1g(P). These spin allowed electronic transitions are characteristic of an octahedral Ni2+ center. Electrochemical studies of the complexes show two irreversible one electron reduction waves at cathodic region. The reduction potential of the complexes shifts towards anodically upon increasing the chain length of the macrocyclic ring. All the nickel(II) complexes show two irreversible one electron oxidation waves at anodic region. The oxidation potential of the complexes shift towards anodically upon increasing the chain length of the macrocyclic ring. The catalytic activities of the complexes were observed to be increase with increase the macrocyclic ring size. The observed rate constant values for the catalytic hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenyl phosphate are in the range of 5.85×10(-3) to 9.14×10(-3) min(-1). All the complexes were screened for antimicrobial activity.

Abstract
A series of N-benzoylated cyclam ligands incorporating three different benzoyl groups 1,4,8,11-tetra-(benzoyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (L(1)), 1,4,8,11-tetra-(2-nitrobenzoyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (L(2)) and 1,4,8,11-tetra-(4-nitrobenzoyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (L(3)) and their nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes are described. Crystal structure of L(1) is also reported. The ligands and complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, electronic, IR, (1)H NMR and (13)C NMR spectral studies. N-benzoylation causes red shift in the lambda(max) values of the complexes. The cyclic voltammogram of the complexes of ligand L(1) show one-electron, quasi-reversible reduction wave in the region -1.00 to -1.04 V, whereas that of L(2) and L(3) show two quasi-reversible reduction peaks. Nickel complexes show one-electron quasi-reversible oxidation wave at a positive potential in the range +1.05 to +1.15 V. The ESR spectra of the mononuclear copper(II) complexes show four lines, characteristic of square-planar geometry with nuclear hyperfine spin 3/2. All copper(II) complexes show a normal room temperature magnetic moment values mu(eff) 1.70-1.73 BM which is close to the spin-only value of 1.73 BM. Kinetic studies on the oxidation of pyrocatechol to o-quinone using the copper(II) complexes as catalysts and hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenylphosphate using the copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes as catalysts were carried out. All the ligands and their complexes were also screened for antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and human pathogenic fungi.

Abstract
Five binuclear nickel(II) complexes have been prepared by simple Schiff base condensation of the compound 1,8-[bis(3-formyl-2-hydroxy-5-bromo)benzyl]-l,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (L) with appropriate aliphatic or aromatic diamine, nickel(II) perchlorate and triethylamine. All the complexes were characterized by elemental and spectral analysis. Positive ion FAB mass spectra show the presence of dinickel core in the complexes. The electronic spectra of the complexes show red shift in the d-d transition. Electrochemical studies of the complexes show two irreversible one electron reduction processes in the range of 0 to -1.4V. The reduction potential of the complexes shifts towards anodically upon increasing chain length of the macrocyclic ring. All the nickel(II) complexes show two irreversible one electron oxidation waves in the range 0.4-1.6V. The observed rate constant values for catalysis of the hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenyl phosphate are in the range of 1.36x10(-2)-9.14x10(-2)min(-1). The rate constant values for the complexes containing aliphatic diimines are found to be higher than the complexes containing aromatic diimines. Spectral, electrochemical and catalytic studies of the complexes were compared on the basis of increasing chain length of the imine compartment. All the complexes show higher antimicrobial activity than the ligand and metal salt.

Abstract
The host-guest interaction between orthophosphate, pyrophosphate and triphosphate anions and three cyclen based macrotricyclic ligands possessing ortho- (TOC), meta- (TMC) and para-xylenyl (TPC) linkers was investigated by potentiometric measurements. The ternary species present in solution and their stability constants have been determined. The different behaviours are explained in terms of hydrogen bond formation and coulombic attraction between the organic host and the inorganic guest. The selectivity, illustrated with species distribution diagrams, is discussed. The results unambiguously showed the importance of the distance between the two cyclen cores and emphasized the increasing of the triphosphate species selectivity together with the cavity size of the ligand. A comparison of the present results with those obtained with their mono-bridged homologues is also discussed.

Abstract
The interaction of two symmetrically branched tris-cyclam derivatives based on 1,3,5-trimethylenebenzene and phloroglucinol cores with nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) is reported. All four metal ions yield solid complexes in which the metal : ligand ratio is 3 : 1. For both ligand types, spectrophotometric titrations confirm the formation of nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes of similar 3 : 1 stoichiometry in dimethyl sulfoxide. Visible spectral, electrochemical, magnetic moment, ESR and NMR studies have been performed to probe the nature of the respective complexes. Where appropriate, the results from the above metal-ion studies are compared with those from parallel investigations in which the corresponding (substituted) mono-cyclam analogues were employed as the ligands. A structural determination employing a poorly diffracting crystal of the trinuclear nickel(II) complex of the tris-cyclam ligand incorporating a 1,3,5-trimethylenebenzene core was successfully carried out with the aid of a synchrotron radiation source. A nickel ion occupies each cyclam ring in a square-planar coordination arrangement, with each cyclam ring adopting the stable trans-III configuration.

Abstract
A four-step synthesis of the title compound starting from methyl acrylate, ethylenediamine, and dimethyl malonate is reported. The synthesis can be run on a multigram scale and is operationally simple. The use of protecting groups is avoided by utilizing the trioxocyclam as the key coupling intermediate.

Abstract
(Methyl)(methoxy)-5,12-dioxocyclam 1 was alkylated on the secondary amines (capped) with 2,6-bis(bromomethyl)pyrazine. The resulting macrocycle was complexed to copper(II) to produce a five-coordinate complex 5a which was fully characterized by a range of spectroscopic methods (IR, UV-vis, ESR) as well as by X-ray crystallography. The structure of this complex is similar to the previously reported pyridine complex, with the five-coordinate copper having distorted square pyramidal geometry and a Cu-Pz bond length of 2.125 A. Attempts to prepare this same complex under microwave irradiation instead produced a trinuclear complex 6a having an octahedral copper(II) center complexed to two pyrazine-cyclam copper units through the amide carbonyl oxygen and the methoxyl group oxygen of the cyclam unit. The X-ray crystal structure of the trinuclear complex showed extensive distortion in the cyclam rings. The remote nitrogen of pyrazine-cyclam complex 5a was capable of coordinating an additional metal. Treatment with RuCl(2)(DMSO)(4) or Rh(2)(OAc)(4), respectively, produced trimetallic Cu-Ru-Cu complex 7 or tetrametallic Cu-Rh-Rh-Cu complex 8. The latter was fully characterized, including an X-ray crystal structure, and had two pyrazine-cyclam complexes bridged by a Rh(2)(OAc)(4) unit through the remote pyrazine nitrogens. There was little distortion in the pyrazine-cyclam copper units as compared to complex 5a: the four metals were collinear, and the two cyclam units were eclipsed. All of the copper complexes were subjected to cyclic voltametry measurements, and no reversible redox changes were observed. Magnetic measurements of 6a and 8 showed the copper atoms to be weakly antiferromagnetically coupled.

Abstract
Two routes of incorporation of europium(III) salts into cyclam-containing hybrid materials have been explored, to elucidate the coordination mode of EuIII in cyclam-containing hybrid materials in a study of the arrangement of cyclam moieties during the solgel process. They were 1) complexation of europium salts by N-tetrasubstituted 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (cyclam) derivatives bearing four hydrolysable Si(OEt)3 groups, followed by hydrolysis and polycondensation of these complexes; and 2) hydrolysis and polycondensation of N-tetrasubstituted silylated cyclam derivatives, then incorporation of europium salts directly into the hybrid materials. The coordination mode of europium salts within solids is not the same as in solution. In solution, the complexation of EuIII with cyclam is not possible; it requires cyclam derivatives containing N-chelating substituents such as amido groups in an appropriate geometry. In contrast, the incorporation of EuIII into hybrid materials is always possible, whatever the nature of the arms of the cyclam moieties. Thus, EuIII uptake is one EuIII/two macrocycles with cyclam moieties containing N-alkyl substituents. This constitutes the first example of 4N + 4N lanthanide coordination.
