Adduct formation between alkali metal ions and divalent metal salicylaldimine complexes having methoxy substituents. A structural investigation

Shift of the reduction potential of nickel(II) Schiff base complexes in the presence of redox innocent metal ions

With the objective of gaining insight into the modulation of the reduction potential of the Ni(II/I) couple, we have synthesized two mononuclear nickel(II) complexes, NiLen (H2Len = N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,2-diamino-2-methylpropane) and NiLpn (H2Lpn = N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)-1,3-diamino-2,2-dimethylpropane) of two N2O4 donor ligands and recorded their cyclic voltammograms. Both the nickel complexes show reversible reduction processes for the Ni(II/I) couple in acetonitrile solution but the reduction potential of NiLpn (E1/2 = -1.883 V) is 188 mV more positive than that of NiLen (E1/2 = -2.071 V). In the presence of redox inactive metal ions (Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and Ba2+), the reduction potentials are shifted by 49-331 mV and 99-435 mV towards positive values compared to NiLen and NiLpn, respectively. The shift increases with the decrease of the pKa of the respective aqua-complexes of the metal ion but is poorly co-linear; however, better linearity is found when the shift of the mono- and bi-positive metal ion aqua complexes is plotted separately. Spectrophotometric titrations of these two nickel complexes with the guest metal ions in acetonitrile showed a well-anchored isosbestic point in all cases, confirming the adduct formation of NiLen and NiLpn with the metal ions. Structural analysis of single crystals, [(NiLen)Li(H2O)2]·ClO4 (1), [(NiLpn)Li(H2O)]·ClO4 (2), [(NiLpn)2Na]·BF4 (3) and [(NiLpn)2Ba(H2O)(ClO4)]·ClO4 (4), also corroborates the heterometallic adduct formation. The orbital energies of the optimised heterometallic adducts from which electron transfers originated were calculated in order to explain the observed reduction process. A strong linear connection between the calculated orbital energies and the experimental E1/2 values was observed. According to MEP and 2D vector field plots, the largest shift for divalent metal ions is most likely caused by the local electric field that they impose in addition to Lewis acidity.

Triiodide-Based Chair-Like Copper Complex Assembled by Halogen Bonding

Cocrystallization of the dimeric [Cu2(μ-I)2(CNXyl)4] (Xyl = 2,6-Me2C6H3, 1) and polymeric catena-[Cu(μ-I)(CNC6H3-2-Cl-6-Me)2] (2) complexes with I2 at different molar ratios between the reactants resulted in a series of (RNC)2CuI-based crystal polyiodides formed along with gradual accumulation of iodine, namely the cocrystals [1·I2]·[Cu(μ1,1-I3)(CNXyl)2]2 followed by the generation of [Cu(μ1,3-I3)(CNXyl)2]2·2I2 (5·2I2) or [Cu(μ1,1-I3)(CNC6H3-2-Cl-6-Me)2]2 and then [Cu(μ1,3-I3)(CNC6H3-2-Cl-6-Me)2]n·n/2I2. The polyiodide 5·2I2 exhibits a novel supramolecular motif─a purely inorganic halogen-bonded Cu2(μ1,3-I3)2 core in the chair conformation. The X-ray structure of 5·2I2 featuring I···I contacts was analyzed by a set of theoretical methods and attributed to moderately strong halogen bonding (from -3.2 to -3.9 kcal/mol); these interactions determine the supramolecular architecture of 5·2I2.

A theoretical insight on the anion⋯anion interactions observed in the solid state structure of a hetero-trinuclear complex

A hetero-nuclear cobalt(iii)/potassium complex has been synthesized and characterized by several analytical techniques. DFT computations indicate the existence of anion⋯anion interactions in its solid state.

Facile synthesis of a new Cu(ii) complex with an unsymmetrical ligand and its use as an O3 donor metalloligand in the synthesis of Cu(ii)-Mn(ii) complexes: structures, magnetic properties, and catalytic oxidase activities

A new, facile Cu(ii) template method has been employed for the unsymmetrical dicondensation of 1,2-ethylenediamine with salicylaldehyde and o-vanillin. The mononuclear complex, [CuL] (1), thus obtained, has been used as an O₃ donor metalloligand for the synthesis of four new Cu(ii)-Mn(ii) complexes, [(CuL)MnCl₂] (2), [(CuL)Mn(NO₃)₂(CH₃OH)]_n (3), {[(CuL)Mn(benz)(H₂O)]₂·(CuL)₂(ClO₄)₂} (4) and [(CuL)Mn(benz)Cl]₂ (5) (where benz = benzoate). Single-crystal structural analyses reveal that 2 is a dinuclear complex while complex 3 is polymeric with a repeating dinuclear [(CuL)Mn(NO₃)₂(CH₃OH)] unit, linked via the nitrate ion. Both 4 and 5 are discrete tetranuclear complexes, where the dinuclear units [(CuL)Mn(benz)(H₂O)] and [(CuL)Mn(benz)Cl] are connected by double benzoate and double chloride bridges, respectively. In complex 4, two monomeric [CuL] units are cocrystallized with the tetranuclear complex. An important difference in the structure of 4 from the other three complexes is that one solvent water molecule is coordinated to each Mn(ii) ion, which makes complex 4 catalytically very active towards mimicking catecholase and phenoxazinone synthase-like oxidation reactions. The turnover numbers (k_cat) for the aerial oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol and o-aminophenol are 399 h^-1 and 230 h^-1, respectively. The evidence of the intermediate species in the mass spectra indicates possible heterometallic cooperation where the Mn(ii) center helps in substrate binding and Cu(ii) participates in the oxidation reactions with molecular oxygen. Cyclic voltammetry measurements suggest the reduction of Cu(ii) to Cu(i) during the catalytic process. Temperature-dependent dc molar magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that complexes 2-5 are antiferromagnetically coupled with the exchange coupling constants (J) of J = -13.5 cm^-1 and J = -13.5 cm^-1 for 2 and 3, respectively, J₁ = -12.6 cm^-1 and J₂ = -1.20 cm^-1 for complex 4 and J₁ = -13.24 cm^-1 and J₂ = 0.36 cm^-1 for complex 5 as is expected from the Cu-O-Mn bridging angles.

Electrophilic-Nucleophilic Dualism of Nickel(II) toward Ni···I Noncovalent Interactions: Semicoordination of Iodine Centers via Electron Belt and Halogen Bonding via σ-Hole

The nitrosoguanidinate complex [Ni{NH═C(NMe₂)NN(O)}₂] (1) was cocrystallized with I₂ and sym-trifluorotriiodobenzene (FIB) to give associates 1·2I₂ and 1·2FIB. Structures of these solid species were studied by XRD followed by topological analysis of the electron density distribution within the framework of Bader's approach (QTAIM) at the M06/DZP-DKH level of theory and Hirshfeld surface analysis. Our results along with inspection of XRD (CCDC) data, accompanied by the theoretical calculations, allowed the identification of three types of Ni···I contacts. The Ni···I semicoordination of the electrophilic nickel(II) center with electron belt of I₂ was observed in 1·2I₂, the metal-involving halogen bonding between the nucleophilic nickel(II)-d_z² center and σ-hole of iodine center was recognized and confirmed theoretically in the structure of [FeNi(CN)₄(IPz)(H₂O)]_n (IPz = 4-N-coordinated 2-I-pyrazine), whereas the arrangement of FIB in 1·2FIB provides a boundary case between the semicoordination and the halogen Ni···I bondings. In 1·2I₂ and 1·2FIB, noncovalent interactions were studied by variable temperature XRD detecting the expansion of noncovalent contacts with preservation of covalent bond lengths upon the temperature increase from 100 to 300 K. The nature and energies of all identified types of the Ni···I noncovalent interactions in the obtained (1·2I₂ and 1·2FIB) and in the previously reported ([FeNi(CN)₄(IPz)(H₂O)]_n, [NiL₂](I₃)₂·2I₂ (L = o-phenylene-bis(dimethylphosphine), [NiL]I₂ (L = 1,4,8,11-tetra-azacyclotetradecane), Ni(en)₂]_n[AgI₂]_2n (en = ethylenediamine), and [NiL](ClO₄) (L = 4-iodo-2-((2-(2-(2-pyridyl)ethylsulfanyl)ethylimino)methyl)-phenolate)) structures were studied theoretically. The estimated strengths of these Ni···I noncovalent contacts vary from 1.6 to 4.1 kcal/mol and, as expected, become weaker on heating. This work is the first emphasizing electrophilic-nucleophilic dualism of any metal center toward noncovalent interactions.

Heteronuclear cobalt(iii)/sodium complexes with salen type compartmental Schiff base ligands: methylene spacer regulated variation in nuclearity

Three unique heteronuclear cobalt(iii)/sodium Schiff base complexes have been synthesized and characterized. Nuclearity of these complexes changes as a result of alteration of the steric hindrance in the ligand moiety.

Trigonal dodecahedral sodium coordination in a trinuclear copper(II)-sodium complex incorporating a salen-type compartmental Schiff base

A new trinuclear heterometallic complex, [(CuL)Na(CuL)]·ClO4 (1), has been prepared using a Schiff base, H2L (where H2L=N,N′-(1,2-phenylene)-bis(3-methoxysalicylideneimine) and characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV/Vis, magnetic, electrochemical, and single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The structure analysis reveals that two metallo-ligand [(CuL)] units are connected to each other by a sodium ion resulting in the cationic unit [(CuL)Na(CuL)]+. Both the copper(II) ions display an almost square planar geometry while the sodium ion adopts a trigonal-dodecahedral coordination geometry. The spectroscopic and other physicochemical studies are in good agreement with the crystal structure of the complex.

Preferential alkali metal adduct formation by cis geometrical isomers of dicaffeoylquinic acids allows for efficient discrimination from their trans isomers during ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry

RATIONALE

Caffeoylquinic acid (CQA) derivatives are a group of structurally diverse phytochemicals that have attracted attention due to their many health benefits. The structural diversity of these molecules is due in part to the presence of regio- and geometrical isomerism. This structural diversity hampers the accurate annotation of these molecules in plant extracts. Mass spectrometry (MS) is successfully used to differentiate between the different regioisomers of the CQA derivatives; however, the accurate discrimination of the geometrical isomers of these molecules has proven to be an elusive task.

METHODS

UV-irradiated methanolic solutions of diCQA were analyzed using an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC/QTOFMS) method in negative ionisation mode. An in-source collision-induced dissociation (ISCID) method was optimized by varying both the capillary and cone voltages to achieve differential fragmentation patterns between UV-generated geometrical isomers of the diCQAs during MS analyses.

RESULTS

Changes in the capillary voltage did not cause a significant difference to the fragmentation patterns of the four geometrical isomers, while changes in the cone voltage resulted in significant differences in the fragmentation patterns. The results also show, for the first time, the preferential formation of alkali metal (Li(+), Na(+) and K(+)) adducts by the cis geometrical isomers of diCQAs, compared to their trans counterparts.

CONCLUSIONS

Optimized QTOFMS-based methods may be used to differentiate the geometrical isomers of diCQAs. Finally, additives such as metal salts to induce adduct formation can be applied as an alternative method to differentiate closely related isomers which could have been difficult to differentiate under normal MS settings.

Synthesis, Ion Recognition Ability, and Metal-Assisted Aggregation Behavior of Dinuclear Metallohosts Having a Bis(Saloph) Macrocyclic Ligand

Macrocyclic molecule 1 that has two saloph coordination sites was designed and synthesized. The macrocycle 1 was easily converted into the corresponding metallohosts 2 and 3 by the reaction with nickel(II) and palladium(II), respectively. As expected from the molecular structure of these metallohosts having an 18-crown-6-like cavity, the nickel(II) metallohost 2 showed excellent binding affinity toward Na(+), Ca(2+), and Sr(2+) to give 1:1 host-guest complexes. Preorganization effect due to the extremely rigid metal-containing macrocycle was suggested to be a major factor for the strong binding. Larger cations such as K(+), Rb(+), Cs(+), and Ba(2+) gave higher aggregated host-guest complexes such as 22M, 23M2, and 24M3. Density functional theory calculations revealed that smaller metal ions do not occupy the center of each macrocycle in the sandwich structures 22M, while larger Cs(+) simultaneously interacts with all the 12 oxygen donor atoms. On the basis of the interaction energy calculations, the preference for 2·Na over 22Na can be explained by destabilization of 22Na due to the elongated Na-O bonds and repulsive three-body interactions. When the ionic radius of the guest ion increases (K(+), Rb(+), Cs(+)), this destabilization becomes less significant and the formation of sandwich complexes 22M is favored. Such aggregation would significantly affect the physical and chemical properties of the metal complexes due to the interplane interactions between the metal centers.

Exploration of unconventional π–hole and C–H⋯H–C types of supramolecular interactions in a trinuclear Cd(ii) and a heteronuclear Cd(ii)–Ni(ii) complex and experimental evidence for preferential site selection of the ligand by 3d and 4d metal ions

We report the synthesis of a trinuclear cadmium(ii) (1) and a di(phenoxido)-bridged dinuclear cadmium(ii)–nickel(ii) (2) complex derived from a bicompartmental (N₂O₄) Schiff base ligand.

Di- and Trinuclear Mixed-Valence Copper Amidinate Complexes from Reduction of Iodine

Molecular examples of mixed-valence copper complexes through chemical oxidation are rare but invoked in the mechanism of substrate activation, especially oxygen, in copper-containing enzymes. To examine the cooperative chemistry between two metals in close proximity to each other we began studying the reactivity of a dinuclear Cu(I) amidinate complex. The reaction of [(2,6-Me2C6H3N)2C(H)]2Cu2, 1, with I2 in tetrahydrofuran (THF), CH3CN, and toluene affords three new mixed-valence copper complexes [(2,6-Me2C6H3N)2C(H)]2Cu2(μ2-I3)(THF)2, 2, [(2,6-Me2C6H3N)2C(H)]2Cu2(μ2-I) (NCMe)2, 3, and [(2,6-Me2C6H3N)2C(H)]3Cu3(μ3-I)2, 4, respectively. The first two compounds were characterized by UV-vis and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies, and their molecular structure was determined by X-ray crystallography. Both di- and trinuclear mixed-valence intermediates were characterized for the reaction of compound 1 to compound 4, and the molecular structure of 4 was determined by X-ray crystallography. The electronic structure of each of these complexes was also investigated using density functional theory.

Crystal structure of {μ-6,6'-dimeth-oxy-2,2'-[ethane-1,2-diylbis(nitrilo-methanylyl-idene)]diphenolato}(meth-anol)(nitrato)nickel(II)sodium

Two phenolate O atoms provided by a Schiff base ligand create a double bridge between Ni²⁺ and Na⁺ ions. The coordination environment of the Ni²⁺ ion is square-planar and it has an unusual seven-coordinated geometry: four atoms from the Schiff base ligand, two from a nitrate anion, which coordinates in a bidentate chelating mode, and one O atom from the coordinated methanol mol­ecule. C—H⋯O weak hydrogen-bond inter­actions result in the formation of chains along the b-axis direction which are further assembled by bifurcated O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds and π-stacking inter­actions.

In the molecular structure of the title compound, [NaNi(C₁₈H₁₈N₂O₄)(NO₃)(CH₃OH)], the Ni²⁺ ion has a slightly distorted square-planar coordination environment defined by two N and two O atoms which belong to a Schiff base ligand, viz. 6,6′-dimeth­oxy-2,2′-[ethane-1,2-diylbis(nitrilo­methanylyl­idene)]diphenolate. Seven O atoms form the coordination environment of the Na⁺ ion: four from the Schiff base ligand, two from a bidentate chelating nitrate anion and one O atom from a coordinating methanol mol­ecule. In the crystal, the bimetallic complexes are assembled into chains along the b-axis direction via weak C—H⋯O hydrogen-bond inter­actions. Neighbouring chains are in turn connected through bifurcated O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds that involve the coordinating methanol mol­ecules and the nitrate anions, and through π–π stacking inter­actions between phenyl rings of neighbouring mol­ecules.

Crystal structure of catena-poly[[potassium-tri-μ-di-methyl-acetamide-κ(6) O:O] iodide]

A one-dimensional chain formed by potassium bridged by μ₂-O-di­methyl­acetamide is reported. This represents a small class of di­methyl­acetamide complexes with oxygen bridging two metal centers.

The structure of catena-poly[[potassium-tri-μ-di­methyl­acetamide-κ⁶O:O] iodide], {[K(C₄H₉NO)₃]I}_n, at 120 K has trigonal (P-3) symmetry. The structure adopts a linear chain motif parallel to the crystallographic c axis. Two crystallographically independent K⁺ cations are present in the asymmetric unit located on threefold rotoinversion axes at [0, 0, 0] and [0, 0, 1/2] and are bridged by the O atoms of the acetamide moiety. This is an example of a rare μ₂-bridging mode for di­methyl­acetamide O atoms. The iodide counter-ion resides on a threefold rotation axis in the channel formed by the [K(C₄H₉NO)]⁺ chains.

A mixed valent heterometallic CuII/NaI coordination polymer with sodium–phenyl bonds

A mixed valent heterometallic Cu^II/Na^I coordination polymer (1) is generated by the reaction of a Schiff base ligand, (6,6′-(1E,1′E)-(2-hydroxypropane-1,3-diyl)bis(azan-1-yl-1-ylidene)bis(methan-1-yl-1-ylidene)bis(2-methoxyphenol)) with copper(ii) acetate and sodium perchlorate.

Programmed multiple complexation for the creation of helical structures from acyclic phenol-bipyridine oligomer ligands

Two new multidentate ligands, H3L(1) and H4L(2), possessing bipyridine-phenol repetitive units were designed so that the multi-metal complexation could produce a single-helical structure in a pre-programmed fashion. The ligands were synthesized by successive palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions. The complexation of H3L(1) with zinc(II) and nickel(II) acetate afforded [L(1)Zn2(OAc)] and [(L(1))2Ni4](OAc)2, respectively. Each of the ligand moieties in these complexes formed a one-turn single helix. The zinc(II) complex [L(1)Zn2(OAc)] underwent a helix compression-extension motion in solution. The complexation of the H3L(1) ligand with iron(III) chloride gave a dinuclear complex [(HL(1))2Fe2Cl2] with a non-helical dimeric structure. The longer ligand H4L(2) afforded a trinuclear complex [L(2)Zn3(OAc)2] with a 1.5-turn single-helical structure upon complexation with zinc(II) acetate. The reaction of the H4L(2) ligand with cobalt(II) acetate under aerobic conditions gave a mixed valence complex [L(2)Co3(OAc)3(OMe)], which had two trivalent and one divalent cobalt ions. The structural features of the trinuclear complexes significantly depended on the metals; [L(2)Co3(OAc)3(OMe)] had a helical pitch of 7.6 Å, which was almost twice that of [L(2)Zn3(OAc)2] (4.0 Å).
