Synthesis of Nanocrystalline Zirconia Using Sol−Gel and Precipitation Techniques

Markedly Improved Catalytic Dehydration of Sorbitol to Isosorbide by Sol-Gel Sulfated Zirconia: A Quantitative Structure-Reactivity Study

Isosorbide, a bicyclic C6 diol, has considerable value as a precursor for the production of bio-derived polymers. Current production of isosorbide from sorbitol utilizes homogeneous acid, commonly H2SO4, creating harmful waste and complicating separation. Thus, a heterogeneous acid catalyst capable of producing isosorbide from sorbitol in high yield under mild conditions would be desirable. Reported here is a quantitative investigation of the liquid-phase dehydration of neat sorbitol over sulfated zirconia (SZ) solid acid catalysts produced via sol-gel synthesis. The catalyst preparation allows for precise surface area control (morphology) and tunable catalytic activity. The S/Zr ratio (0.1-2.0) and calcination temperature (425-625 °C) were varied to evaluate their effects on morphology, acidity, and reaction kinetics and, as a result, to optimize the catalytic system for this transformation. With the optimal SZ catalyst, complete conversion of sorbitol occurred in <2 h under mild conditions to give isosorbide in 76% yield. Overall, the quantitative kinetics and structure-reactivity studies provided valuable insights into the parameters that govern product yields and SZ catalyst activity, central among these being the relative proportion of acid site types and Brønsted surface density.

Improved osteointegration response using high strength perovskite BaTiO3 coatings prepared by chemical bath deposition

A wide range of bioactive materials have been investigated for tissue engineering and regeneration. Barium titanate is a promising smart material to be used as scaffold for bone tissue engineering. Barium titanate coatings are prepared in the present study using chemical bath deposition technique. Coatings are prepared at room temperature with the variation in solution molarity from 0.1 to 1.2 M. Perovskite tetragonal phase is observed after annealing the samples at 300 °C using 1.0-1.2 M solutions. Normal-anomalous dielectric response is observed for annealed coatings. Maximum transmission of ∼55% and ∼82% is observed under as-prepared and annealed coatings, respectivly. Variation in direct band gap, i.e. 3.45-3.64 eV, is observed with varying molarity. High hardness of the coatings (∼1180 HV) is observed at 1.2M with fracture toughness of ∼22 MPam^-1/2. Biodegradation studies show smaller values of weight loss even after immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) after 26 weeks. Barium titanate coatings also show high antioxidant activity. BaTiO₃'s antibacterial reaction is evaluated against microorganisms such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus. Antibacterial activity shows highest zone of inhibition (∼31 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Quantitative real-time PCR is used to assess the gene expression profile in cultivated cells. Thus, coatings produced without the use of hazardous solvents/reagents utilizing CBD technique are a potential material for biomedical applications.

Mixed Electronic-Ionic Conductivity and Stability of Spark Plasma Sintered Graphene-Augmented Alumina Nanofibres Doped Yttria Stabilized Zirconia GAlN/YSZ Composites

Graphene-doped ceramic composites with mixed electronic-ionic conductivity are currently attracting attention for their application in electrochemical devices, in particular membranes for solid electrolyte fuel cells with no necessity to use the current collector. In this work, composites of the Y₂O₃-ZrO₂ matrix with graphene-augmented γ-Al₂O₃ nanofibres (GAlN) were spark plasma sintered. The conductivity and electrical stability in cyclic experiments were tested using electrical impedance spectroscopy. Composites with 0.5 and 1 wt.% GAlN show high ionic conductivity of 10^-2-10^-3 S/cm at 773 K. Around 3 wt.% GAlN percolation threshold was achieved and a gradual increase of electronic conductivity from ~10^-2 to 4 × 10^-2 S/cm with an activation energy of 0.2 eV was observed from 298 to 773 K while ionic conductivity was maintained at elevated temperatures. The investigation of the evolution of conductivity was performed at 298-973 K. Besides, the composites with 1-3 wt.% of GAlN addition show a remarkable hardness of 14.9-15.8 GPa due to ZrC formation on the surfaces of the materials.

Insight into the removal of vanadium ions from model and real wastewaters using surface grafted zirconia-based adsorbents: Batch experiments, equilibrium and mechanism study

This study concerns the fabrication of CTAB- and N,N-dimethyltetradecylamine-grafted zirconia and evaluation of their ability to adsorb vanadium ions. The effectiveness of ZrO₂ functionalization and the different nature of the modifiers used were confirmed by differences in the porosity (ZrO₂: S_BET = 347 m²/g; ZrO₂-CTAB: S_BET = 375 m²/g, ZrO₂-NH⁺: S_BET = 155 m²/g), types of functional groups, and isoelectric points (the ZrO₂ and CTAB-modified samples have IEPs = 3.8 and 3.9, ZrO₂-NH⁺ has IEP = 7.1) of the prepared adsorbents. The designed materials were tested in batch adsorption experiments involving the removal of vanadium ions from model wastewaters at various process parameters, among which pH proved to be the most important. Based on equilibrium and kinetic evaluations, it was proved that the sorption of V(V) ions followed pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models, and the data were better fitted to the Langmuir model, suggesting the following order of the sorbents in terms of favorability for V(V) ion adsorption: ZrO₂-NH⁺ > ZrO₂ > ZrO₂-CTAB. The estimated maximum monolayer capacity of ZrO₂-NH⁺ for V(V) (87.72 mg/g) was the highest among the tested materials. Additionally, it was confirmed that adsorption of V(V) ions onto synthesized materials is a heterogeneous, exothermic, and spontaneous reaction, as evidenced by the calculated values of thermodynamic parameters. The key goals included the transfer of experimental findings obtained using model solutions to the adsorption of V(V) ions from solutions arising from the leaching process of spent catalysts. The highest adsorption efficiencies of 70.8% and 47.5% were recorded for the ZrO₂-NH⁺ material in acidic solution; this may be related to the protonization of -NH⁺ groups, which favors the sorption of V(V) ions. Based on desorption tests as well as the results of infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, irrespective of the process conditions, the physical nature of the adsorbent/adsorbate interaction was confirmed.

Zirconia-based nanomaterials: recent developments in synthesis and applications

In the last decade, the whole scientific community has witnessed great advances and progress in the various fields of nanoscience. Among the different nanomaterials, zirconia nanomaterials have found numerous applications as nanocatalysts, nanosensors, adsorbents, etc. Additionally, their exceptional biomedical applications in dentistry and drug delivery, and interesting biological properties, viz. anti-microbial, antioxidant, and anti-cancer activity, have further motivated the researchers to explore their physico-chemical properties using different synthetic pathways. With such an interest in zirconia-based nanomaterials, the present review focuses systematically on different synthesis approaches and their impact on the structure, size, shape, and morphology of these nanomaterials. Broadly, there are two approaches, viz., chemical synthesis which includes hydrothermal, solvothermal, sol-gel, microwave, solution combustion, and co-precipitation methods, and a greener approach which employs bacteria, fungus, and plant parts for the preparation of zirconia nanoparticles. In this review article, the aforementioned methods have been critically analyzed for obtaining specific phases and shapes. The review also incorporates a detailed survey of the applications of zirconia-based nanomaterials. Furthermore, the influence of specific phases, morphology, and the comparison with their counterpart composites for different applications have also been included. Finally, the concluding remarks, prospects and possible scope are given in the last section.

Sulfated Well-Defined Mesoporous Nanostructured Zirconia for Levulinic Acid Esterification

Well-organized zirconia (ZrO₂) nanoparticles forming mesoporous materials have been successfully synthesized via a facile micelle-templating method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a structure-directing template to control the nucleation/growth process and porosity. The systematic use of such a surfactant in combination with a microwave-assisted solvothermal (cyclohexane/water) reaction enabled the control of pore size in a narrow-size distribution range (3-17 nm). The effect of solvent mixture ratio on the porosity of the synthesized oxide was determined, and the controlled growth of zirconia nanoparticles was confirmed by means of powder X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as well as N₂ physisorption isotherm analysis. Then, the as-prepared nanostructured zirconia oxides were treated with sulfuric acid to have sulfated samples. The catalytic performances of these mesoporous zirconia nanoparticles and their sulfated samples were tested for levulinic acid (LA) esterification by ethanol, with quantitative conversions of LA to ethyl levulinate after 8 h of reaction.

Development of Ag0.04ZrO2/rGO heterojunction, as an efficient visible light photocatalyst for degradation of methyl orange

Methyl orange (MO) is mutagenic, poisonous, and carcinogenic in nature, hence, effective methods are required for its degradation. We have synthesized pure ZrO₂, Ag-doped ZrO_2, and Ag-doped ZrO₂/rGO as hybrid photocatalysts by facile hydrothermal method. These photocatalysts were characterized by powder XRD, scanning electron microscopy, EDX, FTIR, photoluminescence, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance (DRS), and Raman spectroscopy. The photodegradation of MO (10 ppm) was studied with pure ZrO₂, Ag-doped ZrO_2, and Ag-doped ZrO₂/rGO (10 mg/100 mL catalyst dosage) photocatalysts at 100 min irradiation time under UV–Visible light. The pH effect and catalyst dosage on photodegradation of MO was investigated. Ag_0.04ZrO₂/rGO photocatalyst exhibited the maximum photocatalytic degradation of MO (87%) as compared to Ag_0.04ZrO₂ (60%) and pure ZrO₂ (26%). Reusability experiments ensured the excellent stability of photocatalyst after five consecutive experiments. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the facile hydrothermal synthesis of Ag_0.04ZrO₂/rGO photocatalyst for photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange.

Structural and electrochemical corrosion studies of spin coated ZrO2 thin films over stainless steel alloy for bone defect applications

Sol-Gel-based reaction mixture sols have been long used to fabricate dense and uniform bioactive coatings with superior mechanical stability over metallic implants. On account of precise control over synthesis, fabrication, formed and low temperature of processing, this technology is one of the most feasible routes to produce bio-ceramic coatings. The study aims to develop a physical barrier over metal implants in form of bioinert Zirconia coatings, phase-stabilized using Dysprosium. The metallic substrates were cut into 10 mm × 10 mm samples and diamond polished after being polished with a 1000 grade emery sheet. Novel spin-coated zirconia films were fabricated over 316L Stainless steel substrates and were sintered at 600°C to obtain firm and uniform crack-free coatings. The thickness of the coatings was determined by ELCA-D meter thermal analysis was performed using TGA-DTA. Phase determination was performed using X-Ray diffraction followed by morphological investigations using Scanning electron microscopy. The corrosion resistance was evaluated with Polarization studies and electrokinetic data was derived using Tafel extrapolation. Biocompatibility evaluation was performed against MG-63 cell lines and RBCs along with bone-forming ability in vitro in SBF. Stable crack-free 3 Layer coatings fabricated at 2000 rpm for 3 s with a thickness of around 1 μm were found to be optimal for corrosion resistance behavior of steel implants at a low I_Corr value of 0.501 µA/cm² and adhesion strength of 40.93 MPa when untreated falling down to 39.92 MPa when immersed in SBF. The study concludes that medium rpm coatings sustain enough sol to produce crack-free coatings that form a strong physical barrier between body fluid and implant surface thereby reducing the attack of corrosive ions and protecting the implant surface without participating in any form of bioactivity but supporting native bone regeneration capabilities.

UiO-66(Zr)-derived t-zirconia with abundant lattice defect for remarkably enhanced arsenic removal

Zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) exhibits great potential in the remediation of arsenic-polluted water. In this study, tetragonal zirconium oxide (t-ZrO₂) with high lattice defects was facilely fabricated by regulating the Zr-metal-organic framework (MOF) (UiO-66) with sodium acetate modulator and examined to adsorb arsenic from water. Benefitting from the synergistic effects of mesopores structure and lattice defect, t-ZrO₂ exhibited ultrahigh adsorption capacity and faster kinetics towards both arsenate (As(V)) and arsenite (As(III)). The Langmuir adsorption capacity for As(V) and As(III) of 147.5 mg g^-1 and 352.1 mg g^-1 on t-ZrO₂ in exothermic process, respectively, significantly outperforming reported counterparts in literature (generally ≤100 mg g^-1). The faster adsorption kinetic of both As(III) and As(V) on t-ZrO₂ is defined favorably by the pseudo-second-order model over a wide pH (3-11). Furthermore, arsenic is mainly captured by t-ZrO₂ via forming Zr-O-As bonds through occupying coordinatively unsaturated zirconium atoms adsorption sites revealed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectrum and Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis. This study offers a new strategy for designing ultrahigh performance Zr-MOF-derived adsorbents for capturing arsenic.

Addition of Calcined Na2B4O7 on the Synthesis of Li7La3Zr2O12

Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is a garnet-type electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSB). It has good chemical and electrochemical stability against lithium and a relatively high ionic conductivity. However, the ionic conductivity needs to be further increased to provide a high specific capacity of the ASSB. Element doping into LLZO is an effort to increase molecular defect, known to enhance the conductivity. This research studied the effect of the Na2B4O7 addition on the LLZO synthesis, producing LLZBO(A). The investigation aims to understand whether the sodium ions dope into the LLZO structure during synthesis, or it is only B ions to enter into the structure. Therefore, another synthesis with B2O3 of B precursor was conducted for comparison (LLZBO(B)). The precursors were mixed stoichiometrically by following the formula of Li7-xLa3-xZr2-xBxNaxO12 (LLZBO, x= 0.15; 0.20; 0.30). XRD analysis equipped with Le Bail refinement found that LLZBO(A) and LLZBO(B) mainly consist of cubic and tetragonal LLZO with a %mol of 69.06 – 69.84 %, and the main secondary phase is La2Zr2O7. The surface morphology of LLZBO(A) and LLZBO(B) is almost similar to the irregular form of large aggregates. The particles become more dispersed when 0.3 %mol dopant was submitted. Impedance analysis found a high ionic conductivity of LLZBAO(A)0.3 1.042x10-3 Scm-1.

Water Formation in Non-Hydrolytic Sol-Gel Routes: Selective Synthesis of Tetragonal and Monoclinic Mesoporous Zirconia as a Case Study

Several non-hydrolytic sol-gel syntheses involving different precursors, oxygen donors, and conditions have been screened aiming to selectively produce mesoporous t-ZrO2 or m-ZrO2 with significant specific surface areas. The in situ water formation was systematically investigated by Karl Fisher titration of the syneresis liquids. XRD and nitrogen physisorption were employed to characterize the structure and texture of the ZrO2 samples. Significant amounts of water were found in several cases, notably in the reactions of Zr(OnPr)4 with ketones (acetone, 2-pentanone, acetophenone), and of ZrCl4 with alcohols (benzyl alcohol, ethanol) or acetone. Conversely, the reactions of Zr(OnPr)4 with acetic anhydride or benzyl alcohol at moderate temperature (200 °C) and of ZrCl4 with diisopropyl ether appear strictly non-hydrolytic. Although reaction time and reaction temperature were also important parameters, the presence of water played a crucial role on the structure of the final zirconia: t-ZrO2 is favored in strictly non-hydrolytic routes, while m-ZrO2 is favored in the presence of significant amounts of water. 1 H and 13 C NMR analysis of the syneresis liquids allowed us to identify the main reactions responsible for the formation of water and of the oxide network. The morphology of the most interesting ZrO2 samples was further investigated by electron microscopy (SEM, TEM).

Effect of Zr Impregnation on Clay-Based Materials for H2O2-Assisted Photocatalytic Wet Oxidation of Winery Wastewater

UV-activated Zr-doped composites were successfully produced through the impregnation of Zr on the crystal lattice of different clay materials by a one-step route. Fixing the amount of Zr available for dopage (4%), the influence of different supports, submitted to different chemical treatments, on the photocatalytic activity of the resulting Zr-doped pillared clay materials (PILC) was assessed. Both chemical characterization and structural characterization suggest that the immobilization of Zr on montmorillonite and PILC structures occurred through isomorphic substitution between Si and Zr in the tetrahedral sheet of the clay material. This structural change was demonstrated by significant modifications on Si-OH stretching vibrations (1016 cm−1, 1100 cm−1 and 1150 cm−1), and resulted in improved textural properties, with an increase in surface area from 8 m2/g (natural montmorillonite) to 107 m2/g after the pillaring process, and to 118 m2/g after the pillaring and Zr-doping processes ((Zr)Al-Cu-PILC). These materials were tested in the UV-photodegradation of agro-industrial wastewater (AIW), characterized by high concentrations of recalcitrant contaminants. After Zr-dopage on AlCu-PILC heterogeneous catalyst, the total organic carbon (TOC) removals of 8.9% and 10.4% were obtained through adsorption and 77% and 86% by photocatalytic oxidation, at pH 4 and 7, respectively. These results suggest a synergetic effect deriving from the combination of Zr and Cu on the photocatalytic degradation process.

In Situ Zirconia: A Superior Reinforcing Filler for High-Performance Nitrile Rubber Composites

Zirconia particles are generated into a nitrile rubber (NBR) matrix via a solution sol-gel method in a controlled manner. Formation of zirconia particles from their precursor (zirconium(IV) propoxide) occurs under optimized reaction conditions. As a result, the nanoparticles are embedded and well dispersed in the NBR matrix that results in a remarkable improvement in mechanical and thermal properties of the composite. Such reinforcement is not realized when the composites are prepared following the conventional technique of filler loading by physical mixing, although the filler content remains the same. Use of a surface active coupling agent TESPT (bis-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl) tetrasulfide) in the reactive sol-gel system is found to further boost the mechanical performance of the composites. In order to ensure the practical application of the developed composites, a series of studies have been performed that consist of dynamic performance, swelling, thermal degradation, and resistance to oil, ozone, and abrasion. Analysis of the results reveals that in situ zirconia could be an excellent filler for the NBR composites to withstand in a harsh and adverse environment.

Enhanced Thermal Properties of Zirconia Nanoparticles and Chitosan-Based Intumescent Flame Retardant Coatings

Zirconia (ZrO2)-based flame retardant coatings were synthesized through the process of grinding, mixing, and curing. The flame retardant coatings reinforced with zirconia nanoparticles (ZrO2 NPs) were prepared at four different formulation levels marked by F0 (without adding ZrO2 NPs), F1 (1% w/w ZrO2 NPs), F2 (2% w/w ZrO2 NPs), and F3 (3% w/w ZrO2 NPs) in combination with epoxy resin, ammonium polyphosphate, boric acid, chitosan, and melamine. The prepared formulated coatings were characterized by flammability tests, combustion tests, and thermogravimetric analysis. Finally, char residues were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The peak heat release rate (PHRR) of the controlled sample filled with functionalized ZrO2 NPs was observed to decrease dramatically with increasing functionalized ZrO2 NPs loadings. There was an increase in the limit of oxygen index (LOI) value with the increase in the weight percentage of ZrO2 NPs. The UL-94V data clearly revealed a V-1 rating for the F0 sample; however, with the addition of ZrO2 NPs, the samples showed enhanced properties with a V-0 rating. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) results revealed that addition of ZrO2 NPs Improved composite coating thermal stability at 800 °C by forming high residual char. The results obtained here reveal that the addition of ZrO2 NPs in the formulated coatings has shown the excellent impact as flame retardant coatings.

Sintering Pmperature-Dependence on Radiopacity of Bi(2-x) ZrxO(3+x/2) Powders Prepared by Sol-Gel Process

Bismuth oxide (Bi₂O₃) is an effective additive used to enhance radiography resolution for dental materials. However, there are potential concerns regarding its biocompatibility and connection to tissue discoloration. In the present study, we modified the radiopacity properties of Bi₂O₃ with zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) using a sol-gel process and investigated the composition, as well as the effects of heat treatment temperature using Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The harvested Bi2-xZrxO3+x/2 particles showed that the dominant phase transferred from α-Bi₂O₃ to β-Bi7.38Zr0.62O12.31 after a heat treatment of over 750 °C for 2 h. As the x values of Bi2-xZrxO3+x/2 increased from 0.2 to 1.0, more zirconium oxide precipitated onto the particle surface, thus enhancing the surface roughness of particles. For sol-gel Bi1.8Zr0.2O3.1 powders (x = 0.2), the radiopacity values became 4.90 ± 0.23 and 5.83 ± 0.22 mmAl after a heat treatment of 500 °C and 750 °C, respectively.

Microwave synthesis, characterization, and photoluminescence properties of nanocrystalline zirconia

We report synthesis of ZrO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) using microwave assisted chemical method at 80°C temperature. Synthesized ZrO₂ NPs were calcinated at 400°C under air atmosphere and characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, and EDS for their formation, structure, morphology, size, and elemental composition. XRD results revealed the formation of mixed phase monoclinic and tetragonal ZrO₂ phases having crystallite size of the order 8.8 nm from most intense XRD peak as obtained using Scherrer formula. Electron microscope analysis shows that the NPs were less than 10 nm and highly uniform in size having spherical morphology. BET surface area of ZrO₂ NPs was found to be 65.85 m²/g with corresponding particle size of 16 nm. The band gap of synthesized NPs was found to be 2.49 eV and PL spectra of ZrO₂ synthesized NPs showed strong peak at 414 nm, which corresponds to near band edge emission (UV emission) and a relatively weak peak at 475 and 562 nm.
