Adsorption of Alizarin, Eriochrome Blue Black R, and Fluorescein Using Different Iron Oxides as Adsorbents

Dual-functional heterogeneous Fenton catalyst Cu/Ti co-doped Fe3O4@FeOOH for cyanide-containing wastewater treatment: Preparation, performance and mechanism

The dual-functional heterogeneous Fenton catalyst Cu/Ti co-doped iron-based Fenton catalyst (Cu/Ti -Fe3O4@FeOOH, FCT) were successfully prepared by precipitation oxidation method and characterized by XRD, XPS and XAFS. The prepared Cu/Ti co-doped Fe3O4@FeOOH nanoparticles consisted of goethite nanorods and magnetite rod octahedral particles, with Cu and Ti replacing Fe in the catalyst crystal structure, leading to the formation of the goethite structure. The heterogeneous Fenton catalyst FCT exhibited excellent degradation activity for cyanide in wastewater and showed different reaction mechanisms at varying pH levels. When treating 100 mL of 12 mg L-1 NaCN solution, complete degradation occurred within 40 min at 30 °C and pH ranging from 6.5 to 12.5 without external energy. Compared to Fe3O4, FCT shows superior degradation activity for cyanide. The surface Cu(Ⅰ) facilitated the electron transfer and significantly improved the catalytic activity of the catalyst. Additionally, the magnetic properties of the Ti-doped catalyst samples were greatly enhanced compared to the Cu@FeOOH catalyst doped with Cu, making them favorable for recycling and reuse. FCT maintains 100% degradation of cyanogen after three cycles, indicating its excellent stability. Furthermore, electron spin resonance spectroscopy, free radical quenching experiments and fluorescence probe techniques using terephthalic acid (TA) and benzoic acid (BA) confirmed that the presence of •OH and FeⅣ=O reactive species was responsible for the catalysts exhibiting different mechanisms at different pH conditions. Compared with other heterogeneous Fenton catalysts, FCT exhibits intentional degradation activity for cyanide-containing wastewater under different acid-base conditions, which greatly broadened the pH range of the heterogeneous Fenton reaction.

A novel study on the preferential attachment of chromophore and auxochrome groups in azo dye adsorption on different greenly synthesized magnetite nanoparticles: investigation of the influence of the mediating plant extract's acidity

In this paper, the adsorption of Evans blue (EB) and methyl orange (MO) azo dyes on four greenly synthesized magnetite nanoparticles has been studied to investigate the effect of the mediating plant extract's acidity on magnetite surface reactivity in azo dye adsorption. Magnetite surface reactivity has been studied through the analysis of preferential attachment of dye chromophore and auxochrome groups on magnetite nanoparticles, and adsorption yields. According to the contents of chromophore and auxochrome groups in dye structures, the mediating plant extract's acidity effect on acid site types and densities was also deduced. Used plants for the green synthesis were: Artemisia herba-alba (L), Matricaria pubescens (L), Juniperus phoenicea (L), and Rosmarinus officinalis (L), and their extract pHs were respectively 5.25, 5.05, 4.63, and 3.69. The four greenly synthesized samples of magnetite were characterized by XRD, SEM, ATR-FTIR, and UV-Vis techniques. The novelty of this paper lies in highlighting the influence of the mediating plant extract's acidity on the greenly synthesized magnetite surface reactivity towards the preferential attachment of chromophore and auxochrome functional groups in azo dye adsorption, where obtained results show that the mediating plant extract's acidity has a clear effect on the preferential attachment of chromophore and auxochrome groups on magnetite surfaces as well as on azo dyes' adsorption yields and capacities. Indeed, the decrease in the plant extract's acidity leads to an increase in the attachment of chromophore groups and a decrease in the attachment of auxochrome groups. So, it leads to an increase in Lewis acid site density and a decrease in Brønsted acid site density of magnetite surfaces. Also, the decrease of the plant extract's acidity leads to an increase in the studied dye adsorption yields, and this is because the majority of functional groups of MO and EB dyes are chromophores that attach to Lewis acid sites. The difference found in adsorption yields of EB and MO on all four magnetite samples is due to the fact that the ratio of chromophore/auxochrome groups in EB is remarkably greater than that in MO. The linear and non-linear pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics of the adsorption as well as the intra-particle diffusion mechanism have been analyzed. Obtained results indicate that in all adsorption processes the adsorption kinetics followed a linear pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and film diffusion is the step that controlled adsorption mechanisms. The thermodynamic studies of EB and MO adsorption processes on the four magnetite surfaces have been analyzed in the temperature range of 303.15-318.15 K. Obtained results reveal the endothermic nature of the adsorption in all cases.

Preferential and enhanced adsorption of methyl green on different greenly synthesized magnetite nanoparticles: investigation of the influence of the mediating plant extract’s acidity

Four magnetite nanoparticle (NP) samples have been greenly synthesized using four aqueous plant extracts, which are Artemisia herba-alba (L), Rosmarinus officinalis (L), Matricaria pubescens (L), and Juniperus phoenicia (L). The pH of these extracts are acidic (5.25, 5.05, 4.63, and 3.69, respectively). The synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, ATR-FTIR, and UV-Vis. This work aimed to study the preferential and enhanced adsorption of methyl green (MG) on the four greenly synthesized Fe₃O₄ surfaces by coupling three processes: MG adsorption in ambient dark conditions as the first process, followed by the thermocatalysis of the MG/Fe₃O₄ residual solution in the second process, and finally photocatalysis by the UV irradiation of MG/Fe₃O₄ residual solution after carrying out thermocatalysis. The novelty of this study lies in highlighting the influence of the mediating plant extract’s acidity on the magnetite NPs’ physicochemical characteristics, which impact the preferential and enhanced MG adsorption. The studied physicochemical characteristics are the functional hydroxyl group density on the magnetite surface, grain size, and band gap energy. It was found that the plant extract’s acidity has a clear effect on the studied physicochemical properties. The analysis of the FTIR spectra showed that the hydroxyl group densities differ on the four magnetite samples. Furthermore, the calculated grain sizes of the magnetite samples based on XRD spectra data vary from 29.27 to 41.49 nm. The analysis of the UV-Vis spectra of the four magnetite samples showed that the estimated direct band gap energies vary from 2.87 to 2.97 eV. The obtained results showed that the decrease of the mediating plant extract’s acidity leads to an increase in the hydroxyl group density on magnetite surfaces, which resulted in an increase in the MG adsorption capacities and yields in the first process of adsorption. Thus, MG adsorption was more preferred on greenly synthesized magnetite surfaces mediated by plant extracts with low acidity (Artemisia herba-alba (L) and Rosmarinus officinalis (L)). Furthermore, the increase of the plant extract’s acidity leads to a decrease in the particle size and an increase in the band gap energy and, therefore, to the decrease of the electron/hole pair recombination speed upon electron excitation. So, magnetite greenly synthesized from a more acidic mediating plant extract showed higher thermo- and photocatalytic activities for MG adsorption (Juniperus phoenicia (L) and Matricaria pubescens (L)). However, under photocatalysis, the enhancement is even more significant compared to thermocatalysis.

Magnetite NP samples synthesized from less acidic plant extracts have more dense active sites and prefer adsorbing more MG. The increase of plant extract acidity leads to the increase of the thermo- and photocatalytic activities of Fe₃O₄ NPs.

Surface-Modified Chitosan: An Adsorption Study of a “Tweezer-Like” Biopolymer with Fluorescein

Tweezer-like adsorbents with enhanced surface area were synthesized by grafting aniline onto the amine sites of a chitosan biopolymer scaffold. The chemical structure and textural properties of the adsorbents were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and spectral methods, including Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H- and, 13C-NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Equilibrium solvent swelling results for the adsorbent materials provided evidence of a more apolar biopolymer surface upon grafting. Equilibrium uptake studies with fluorescein at ambient pH in aqueous media reveal a high monolayer adsorption capacity (Qm) of 61.8 mg·g−1, according to the Langmuir isotherm model. The kinetic adsorption profiles are described by the pseudo-first order kinetic model. 1D NMR and 2D-NOESY NMR spectra were used to confirm the role of π-π interactions between the adsorbent and adsorbate. Surface modification of the adsorbent using monomeric and dimeric cationic surfactants with long hydrocarbon chains altered the hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) of the adsorbent surface, which resulted in attenuated uptake of fluorescein by the chitosan molecular tweezers. This research contributes to a first example of the uptake properties for a tweezer-like chitosan adsorbent and the key role of weak cooperative interactions in controlled adsorption of a model anionic dye.

Application of response surface methodology (RSM) for the removal of methylene blue dye from water by nano zero-valent iron (NZVI)

In this study, iron zero-valent nanoparticles were synthesized, characterized and studied for removal of methylene blue dye in water solution. The reactions were mathematically described as the function of parameters such as nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) dose, pH, contact time and initial dye concentration, and were modeled by the use of response surface methodology. These experiments were carried out as a central composite design consisting of 30 experiments determined by the 2(4) full factorial designs with eight axial points and six center points. The results revealed that the optimal conditions for dye removal were NZVI dose 0.1-0.9 g/L, pH 3-11, contact time 20-100 s, and initial dye concentration 10-50 mg/L, respectively. Under these optimal values of process parameters, the dye removal efficiency of 92.87% was observed, which very close to the experimental value (92.21%) in batch experiment. In the optimization, R(2) and R(2)adj correlation coefficients for the model were evaluated as 0.96 and 0.93, respectively.

Ionic liquids coated Fe3O4 based inorganic-organic hybrid materials and their application in the simultaneous determination of DNA bases

Ionic liquids (ILs) coated Fe3O4 based inorganic-organic hybrid materials (represented as Fe3O4/ILs) were synthesized. ILs such as methylimidazolium chloride ([Hmim][Cl]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim][Cl]) were investigated. For comparative study, quaternary ammonium salts such as choline chloride, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide [C16H33N(CH3)3][Br], and trimethylstearylammonium chloride [C18H37N(CH3)3][Cl] were also investigated. Materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen sorption, Fourier transform infrared and scanning/transmission electron microscopy. Electrochemical sensors based on Fe3O4/ILs modified glassy carbon electrodes were fabricated for the simultaneous determination of all four DNA bases. The electrochemical behavior of DNA bases was investigated in detail. Various reaction parameters such as effect of scan rate, number of electrons involved in the rate determining step, electron transfer coefficient, surface adsorbed concentration, and the electrode reaction standard rate constant were investigated. Catalytic activity obtained at various Fe3O4/ILs modified electrodes was explained using DFT calculation. The analytical performance of the sensor was demonstrated in the simultaneous determination of guanine, adenine, thymine, and cytosine in calf thymus DNA sample.

Methylene Blue Adsorption by Synthetic Nano-Carbon-Hydroxylapatite

Synthetic nano-carbon-hydroxylapatite was used to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The influence of various parameters such as reaction time, initial dye concentration and pH on the adsorption was investigated in batch mode and the adsorption mechanism was briefly discussed. The experimental results show that the uptake of MB was rapid and equilibrium could be reached in 30 minutes, and the uptake of MB increased with increasing initial dye concentration and pH. The pseudo-second-order model fits well to the kinetics and Henry adsorption isotherm can be used to describe the experimental data. The adsorption mechanism can be explained mainly by electrostatic attraction.

The contribution of vanadium and titanium on improving methylene blue decolorization through heterogeneous UV-Fenton reaction catalyzed by their co-doped magnetite

This study investigated the methylene blue (MB) decolorization through heterogeneous UV-Fenton reaction catalyzed by V-Ti co-doped magnetites, with emphasis on comparing the contribution of V and Ti cations on improving the adsorption and catalytic activity of magnetite. In the well crystallized spinel structure, both Ti(4+) and V(3+) occupied the octahedral sites. Ti(4+) showed a more obvious effect on increasing specific surface area and superficial hydroxyl amount than V(3+) did, resulting in a significant improvement of the adsorption ability of magnetite to MB. The UV introduction greatly accelerated MB degradation. And magnetite with more Ti and less V displayed better catalytic activity in MB degradation through heterogeneous UV-Fenton reaction. The transformation of degradation products and individual contribution from vanadium and titanium on improving adsorption and catalytic activity of magnetite were also investigated. These new insights are of high importance for well understanding the interface interaction between contaminants and metal doped magnetites, and the environmental application of natural and synthetic magnetites.

Optimizing adsorption of crystal violet dye from water by magnetic nanocomposite using response surface modeling approach

A magnetic nanocomposite was developed and characterized. Adsorption of crystal violet (CV) dye from water was studied using the nanocomposite. A four-factor central composite design (CCD) combined with response surface modeling (RSM) was employed for maximizing CV removal from aqueous solution by the nanocomposite based on 30 different experimental data obtained in a batch study. Four independent variables, viz. temperature (10-50°C), pH of solution (2-10), dye concentration (240-400 mg/l), and adsorbent dose (1-5 g/l) were transformed to coded values and a second-order quadratic model was built to predict the responses. The significance of independent variables and their interactions were tested by the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t-test statistics. Adequacy of the model was tested by the correlation between experimental and predicted values of the response and enumeration of prediction errors. Optimization of the process variables for maximum adsorption of CV by nanocomposite was performed using the quadratic model. The Langmuir adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was determined as 81.70 mg/g. The model predicted maximum adsorption of 113.31 mg/g under the optimum conditions of variables (concentration 240 mg/l; temperature 50°C; pH 8.50; dose 1g/l), which was very close to the experimental value (111.80 mg/g) determined in batch experiment.

Study on adsorption and desorption properties of the starch grafted p-tert-butyl-calix[n]arene for butyl Rhodamine B solution

The adsorbents of starch grafted p-tert-butyl-calix[4,6,8]arene-SGCn (SGC4, SGC6, SGC8) are prepared. The products are characterized by FTIR, elemental analysis, thermal gravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscope. Static adsorption behavior is studied by using SGC8 as adsorbent, butyl Rhodamine B (BRB) solution as simulation dye wastewater. The adsorption of BRB onto SGC8 fits the second order kinetic model and the apparent adsorption rate constant is 0.002 g mg(-1)min(-1) at 25 °C. The equilibrium adsorption data are interpreted using Langmuir and Freundlich models. The adsorption of BRB onto SGC8 is better represented by the Langmuir equation. The thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption reaction are calculated through van't Hoff analysis. The adsorbent may be easily regenerated by using ethanol solution as desorption agent to extract dye from SGC8. The rate of desorption of BRB is dependent on the concentration of ethanol and the temperature. SGC8 exhibits excellent adsorption and desorption properties toward dye molecule. The new-style adsorbent of SGC8 is regarded as a potential adsorbent to deal with dye or organic wastewater.
