Abstract
2,5-Bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) as well as furfuryl alcohol (FFA) are considered as highly valuable biomass-derived alcohols resembling aromatic monomers in polymer synthesis. Herein, a series of cobaltic nitrogen-doped carbon (Co-NC) catalysts calcinated at different temperatures were synthesized and tested for the solvent-free hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to prepare BHMF. It was found that the Co-NC catalyst calcinated at 600 °C (Co-NC-600) exhibited a superior catalytic activity in the hydrogenation reaction mainly due to the doping of graphitic N, which probably facilitated the polarization of H2 to afford H+ and H- . Consequently, Co-NC-600 offered a high BHMF/FFA yield greater than 90 % with a nearly complete conversion of HMF/furfural (FF) at the optimal conditions (80 °C, 4 h, and 5 MPa H2 ). After the hydrogenation reaction, Co-NC catalyst was facilely recycled by magnetic separation, and the obtained BHMF/FFA was then successfully transformed into hypercrosslinked polymers with an excellent CO2 /H2 storage capacity comparable to aromatic hydroxymethyl polymers. Therefore, this is a novel and facile two-step pathway for the conversion of biomass-derived HMF/FF towards functional polymers from both industrial and environmental perspectives.

Abstract
5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) obtained from biomass is an important platform chemical for the next generation of plastics and biofuel production. Although industrialized, the high yield of HMF in aqueous systems was rarely achieved. The main problem is that HMF tends to form byproducts when co-adsorbed with water at acid sites. In this study, the pressure was reduced to improve the maximum yield of HMF from 9.3 to 35.2% (at 190 °C in 60 min) in a glucose aqueous solution. The mechanism here involved water boiling as caused by pressure reduction, which in turn promoted the desorption of HMF from the solid catalyst, thereby inhibiting the side reaction of HMF. Furthermore, the solid catalysts could be reused three times without a significant loss of their catalytic activity. Overall, this work provides an effective strategy to improve the yield of HMF in water over heterogeneous catalysts in practice.

Abstract
Biomass energy has attracted much attention because of its clean and renewable
characteristics. At present, C2–C3 polyols such as glycerol, 1,2-propanediol, and ethylene
glycol, widely used as platforms for downstream chemicals or directly used as chemicals
in diversified industries, mainly depend on the petrochemical industry. In terms of the
feedstock for C2–C3 polyol production, the C3-derived glycerol is a side product during
biodiesel synthesis, whereas the C5-derived xylitol and C6-derived sorbitol can be mainly
obtained by hydrolysis–hydrogenation of hemicellulose and cellulose from lignocellulosic
biomass, respectively. In this review, we summarize the catalysts and catalysis for selective
hydrogenolysis of these polyhydric compounds to C2–C3 polyols and introduce the
reaction pathways for the target polyol formation based on the C3, C5, and C6 polyhydric
alcohol hydrogenolysis. Finally, state-of-the-art technologies are described and the remaining challenges and
further prospects are presented in view of the technical aspects.

Abstract
The noncoordinating ionic liquid [bmim][OTf] (bmim=1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) is an effective and versatile solvent for the high-yield dehydration of fructose to the platform chemical 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) over short reaction times. In contrast to prior studies in which low yields were obtained for this transformation in ionic liquids (ILs) with noncoordinating anions, this contribution reveals that the water content is an essential parameter for an efficient reaction in ILs. Achieving the optimum amount of water can increase the yield dramatically by regulating the acidity of the catalyst and partially suppressing the side reaction caused by self-condensation of HMF. Using acid catalysis in [bmim][OTf] with 3.5 % water content, yields above 80 % can be achieved at 100 °C in only 10 min, even at high (14 %) fructose loading. These results also suggest that [bmim][OTf] represents a superior medium for solvent extraction of HMF compared to halide-based ILs, allowing the option of isolation or further valorization of the HMF formed.

Abstract
The search for efficient catalysts frequently leads to new homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts of increasing complexity, and sometimes common, natural, or hybrid natural/synthetic materials that could be used in catalysis are overlooked. For example, the leather industry has produced robust Cr-containing materials for centuries by chemical treatment of animal hides with chromium salts. Herein, the use of chromium-tanned leather as a heterogeneous catalyst for glucose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and levoglucosenone (LGO) is reported. Four pieces of waste leather were obtained from shoe soles and a belt, characterized by a range of techniques including FTIR spectroscopy, SEM, BET surface area measurements, XRD, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and their catalytic activity was evaluated. The activity of the scrap leather pieces compares favorably to those of many recently reported catalysts for the preparation of 5-HMF, but additionally results in significant quantities of LGO. Overall, the results demonstrate that waste leather is an outstanding material for use in catalysis.

Abstract
Renewable and sustainable betaine-based catalysts (BX) derived from the betaine sugar industry or ChCl were developed for the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from various carbohydrates. The HMF yields in the BX-based media reached up to 88 %, 66 %, 37 % and 53 %, for the conversion of fructose, glucose, cellulose, and lignocellulosic biomass, respectively. In addition, choline-O-sulfate was synthesized and demonstrated to be an efficient catalyst for the conversion of fructose to HMF. From the perspective of green and sustainable chemistry, this work demonstrates benefits not only in the preparation of sustainable catalysts but also the green production of HMF from biomass.

Abstract
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been identified as a promising biomass-derived platform chemical. In this study, one pot production of HMF was studied in ionic liquid (IL) under probe sonication technique. Compared with the conventional heating technique, the use of probe ultrasonic irradiation reduced the reaction time from hours to minutes. Glucose, cellulose and local bamboo, treated with ultrasonic, produced HMF in the yields of 43%, 31% and 13% respectively, within less than 10min. The influence of various parameters such as acoustic power, reaction time, catalysts and glucose loading were studied. About 40% HMF yield at glucose conversion above 90% could be obtained with 2% of catalyst in 3min. Negligible amount of soluble by-product was detected, and humin formation could be controlled by adjusting the different process parameters. Upon extraction of HMF, the mixture of ionic liquid and catalyst could be reused and exhibited no significant reduction of HMF yield over five successive runs. The purity of regenerated [C4C1im]Cl and HMF was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, indicating neither changes in the chemical structure nor presence of any major contaminants during the conversion under ultrasonic treatment. 13C NMR suggests that [C4C1im]Cl/CrCl3 catalyses mutarotation of α-glucopyranose to β-glucopyranose leading to isomerization and finally conversion to HMF. The experimental results demonstrate that the use of probe sonication technique for conversion to HMF provides a positive process benefit.

Abstract
Innovative valorization of naturally abundant and renewable lignocellulosic biomass is of great importance in the pursuit of a sustainable future and biobased economy. Ionic liquids (ILs) as an important kind of green solvents and functional fluids have attracted significant attention for the catalytic transformation of lignocellulosic feedstocks into a diverse range of products. Taking advantage of some unique properties of ILs with different functions, the catalytic transformation processes can be carried out more efficiently and potentially with lower environmental impacts. Also, a new product portfolio may be derived from catalytic systems with ILs as media. This review focuses on the catalytic chemical conversion of lignocellulose and its primary ingredients (i.e., cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) into value-added chemicals and fuel products using ILs as the reaction media. An outlook is provided at the end of this review to highlight the challenges and opportunities associated with this interesting and important area.

Abstract
We describe a process for the selective conversion of C6 -polyols into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) in biphasic systems of organic carbonate/water (OC/W), with cerium(IV) phosphates as catalysts. Different reaction parameters such as the OC/W ratio, catalyst loading, reaction time, and temperature, were investigated for the dehydration of fructose. Under the best reaction conditions, a yield of 67.7 % with a selectivity of 93.2 % was achieved at 423 K after 6 h of reaction using [(Ce(PO4)1.5 (H2 O)(H3 O)0.5 (H2 O)0.5)] as the catalyst. A maximum yield of 70 % with the same selectivity was achieved after 12 h. At the end of the reaction, the catalyst was removed by centrifugation, the organic phase was separated from water and evaporated in vacuo (with solvent recovery), and solid 5-HMF was isolated (purity >99 %). The recovery and reuse of the catalyst and the relationship between the structure of the OC and the efficiency of the extraction are discussed. The OC/W system influences the lifetime of the catalysts positively compared to only water.

Abstract
L-Proline derived ionic liquids (ILs) used as both solvent and catalyst were efficient for transformation of fructose and sucrose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in the presence of water. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize fructose dehydration process, and a maximum HMF yield of 73.6% could be obtained at 90°C after 50 min. The recycling of the IL exhibited an almost constant activity during five successive trials, and a possible reaction mechanism for the dehydration of fructose to HMF was proposed.

Abstract
A solid acid foam-structured catalyst based on a binderless zirconium phosphate (ZrPO) coating on aluminum foam was prepared. The catalyst layer was obtained by performing a multiple washcoating procedure of ZrPO slurry on the anodized aluminum foam. The effect of the pretreatment of ZrPO, the concentration of the slurry, and the amount of coating on the properties of the foam was studied. The catalytic properties of the prepared foams have been evaluated in the dehydration of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in a biphasic reactor. The catalytic behavior of ZrPO foam-based catalysts was studied in a rotating foam reactor and compared with that of bulk ZrPO. The effect of a silylation procedure on the selectivity of the process was shown over bulk and foam catalysts. This treatment resulted in a higher selectivity due to the deactivation of unselective Lewis acid sites. Addition of methylisobutylketone leads to extraction of HMF from the aqueous phase and stabilization of the selectivity to HMF over bulk ZrPO. A more intensive contact of the foam with the aqueous and organic phases leads to an increase in the selectivity and resistance to deactivation of the foam in comparison with a bulk catalyst.
