Abstract
Today, with the growth of the human population, industrial activities have also increased. Different industries such as painting, cosmetics, leather, etc. have broadly developed, and as a result, they also produce a lot of pollutants. These pollutants can enter the environment and pollute water, air, and soil. Organic dyes, nitro compounds, drug residues, pesticides and herbicides are pollutants that should be removed from the environment. Natural polymers or biopolymers are important types of organic materials that are broadly applied for different applications. Among them, polysaccharides and lignin, which are two types of biopolymers, have attracted much consideration owing to their advantages such as biocompatibility, environmental friendly, safety, availability, etc. Polysaccharides include cellulose, gum, starch, alginate (Alg), chitin, and chitosan (CS). On the other hand, bentonite is one of the types of clays, which owing to their properties like large specific surface area, adsorption performance, naturally available, etc., have drawn the interest of many researchers. As a result, the synthesis of a composite including polysaccharide/lignin and bentonite can be very efficient for different applications, especially environmental ones. In this review, we instigated the preparation of these composites as well as the removal performance of them. In fact, we reported recent advancements in the synthesis of lignin- and polysaccharide-bentonite composites for the removal of diverse kinds of contaminants like organic dyes, nitro compounds, and hazardous materials.

Abstract
Superabsorbent polymers are new functional polymeric materials that can absorb and retain liquids thousands of times their masses. This paper reviews the synthesis and modification methods of different superabsorbent polymers, summarizes the processing methods for different forms of superabsorbent polymers, and organizes the applications and research progress of superabsorbent polymers in industrial, agricultural, and biomedical industries. Synthetic polymers like polyacrylic acid, polyacrylamide, polyacrylonitrile, and polyvinyl alcohol exhibit superior water absorption properties compared to natural polymers such as cellulose, chitosan, and starch, but they also do not degrade easily. Consequently, it is often necessary to modify synthetic polymers or graft superabsorbent functional groups onto natural polymers, and then crosslink them to balance the properties of material. Compared to the widely used superabsorbent nanoparticles, research on superabsorbent fibers and gels is on the rise, and they are particularly notable in biomedical fields like drug delivery, wound dressing, and tissue engineering.

Abstract
A simple solvothermal method was used to synthesize a metal-organic framework (MOF) with an Al metal entity, viz., CAU-1 NH2. The synthesized MOF was characterized using different techniques like X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission SEM (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The radiation stability was evaluated by irradiating the material up to a cumulative dose of 2 MGy using 60Co for the first time. The studies showed a remarkable gamma irradiation stability of the material up to 1 MGy. The porosity and surface area of the synthesized MOF were determined by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, which showed a high specific surface area of 550 m2/g. The pH dependence study of Th uptake from an aqueous solution was performed from pH 2-8, followed by adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics studies. These results revealed that the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic models can be well adapted for understanding the Th uptake and kinetics, respectively. The synthesized MOF exhibited an ∼404 mg/g thorium adsorption capacity. Selectivity studies of adsorption of Th w.r.t. to U and different metal ions such as Cu, Co, Ni, and Fe showed that Th gets adsorbed preferentially as compared to other metal ions. In addition, the MOF could be used multiple times without much deterioration.

Abstract
Superabsorbent hydrogels (SAH) are crosslinked three-dimensional networks distinguished by their super capacity to stabilize a large quantity of water without dissolving. Such behavior enables them to engage in various applications. Cellulose and its derived nanocellulose can become SAHs as an appealing, versatile, and sustainable platform because of abundance, biodegradability, and renewability compared to petroleum-based materials. In this review, a synthetic strategy that reflects starting cellulosic resources to their associated synthons, crosslinking types, and synthetic controlling factors was highlighted. Representative examples of cellulose and nanocellulose SAH and an in-depth discussion of structure-absorption relationships were listed. Finally, various applications of cellulose and nanocellulose SAH, challenges and existing problems, and proposed future research pathways were listed.

Abstract
Thorium as a potential nuclear fuel for the next-generation thorium-based molten salt reactors holds significant environmental and economic promise over the current uranium-based nuclear reactors. However, because thorium (Th4+) usually coexists with other rare earth elements, alkali or alkaline earth metals in minerals, or highly acidic radioactive waste, seeking acid-resistant sorbents with excellent selectivity, high capacity, and fast removal rate for Th4+ is still a challenging task. In this work, we investigated a robust layered metal sulfide (KInSn2S6, KMS-5) for Th4+ removal from strong acidic solutions. We report that KMS-5 could capture Th4+ from a 0.1 M HNO3 solution with extremely high efficiency (∼99.9%), fast sorption kinetics (equilibrium time < 10 min), and large distribution coefficient (up to 1.5 × 106 mL/g). Furthermore, KMS-5 exhibited excellent sorption selectivity towards Th4+ in the presence of large amounts of competitive metal ions like Eu3+, Na+, and Ca2+. This extraordinary capture property for Th4+ is attributed to the facile ion exchange of Th4+ with K+ in the interlayers and subsequent formation of a stable coordination complex via Th-S bonds. These results indicate that KMS-5 is a promising functional sorbent for the effective capture of Th4+ from highly acidic solutions.

Abstract
Uranium and thorium ions were selectively removed from aqueous solution using synthesized gum ghatti grafted poly(acrylamide) gum-g-poly(AAm) composite. A gamma radiation induced free radical copolymerization technique was used to synthesize the copolymer composite of gum-g-poly(AAm). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to characterize the graft copolymer gum-g-poly(AAm). The adsorption of uranium ions and thorium ions using the gum-g-poly(AAm) copolymer composites has been investigated in batch mode. The adsorptive characteristics were investigated by varying the pH, concentration and time for both ions. The adsorption method depends on the pH of each metal ion, and the highest adsorption percentage was achieved at pH 6.0. The adsorption statistics were justified by isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic models. The Langmuir adsorption model was revealed to be the best fitted monolayer arrangement, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 367.65 mg g-1 for the uranium ions and 125.95 mg g-1 for the thorium ions. The adsorption of metal ions occurred by the ion exchange process, which was specified through the rate controlling step with a best-fitted pseudo-second order kinetic rate model. Thermodynamic analysis shows that the ΔH and ΔS values for the uranium ions and thorium ions were positive. The negative ΔG values decreased with an increase in temperature, suggesting that the metal ion adsorption process was endothermic and spontaneous in behaviour.

Abstract
Manganese dioxide decorated graphene oxide (GOM) was prepared via fixation of crystallographic MnO2 (α, γ) on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) and was explored as an adsorbent material for simultaneous removal of thorium/uranium ions from aqueous solutions. In single component systems (Th(IV) or U(VI)), the α-GOM2 (the weight ratio of GO/α-MnO2 of 2) exhibited higher maximum adsorption capacities toward both Th(IV) (497.5mg/g) and U(VI) (185.2 mg/g) than those of GO. In the binary component system (Th(IV)/U(VI)), the saturated adsorption capacity of Th(IV) (408.8 mg/g)/U(VI) (66.8 mg/g) on α-GOM2 was also higher than those on GO. Based on the analysis of various data, it was proposed that the adsorption process may involve four types of molecular interactions including coordination, electrostatic interaction, cation-pi interaction, and Lewis acid-base interaction between Th(IV)/U(VI) and α-GOM2. Finally, the Th(IV)/U(VI) ions on α-GOM2 can be separated by a two-stage desorption process with Na2CO3/EDTA. Those results displayed that the α-GOM2 may be utilized as an potential adsorbent for removing and separating Th(IV)/U(VI) ions from aqueous solutions.

Abstract
A new feather protein-grafted poly(potassium acrylate)/polyvinyl alcohol (FP-g-PKA/PVA) semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) hydrogel was produced through graft copolymerization with FP as a basic macromolecular skeletal material, acrylic acid as a monomer and PVA as a semi-IPNs polymer. The adsorption of ammonium and phosphate ions from aqueous solution using the new hydrogel as N and P controlled-release fertilizer with water-retention capacity was studied. The effects of pH value, concentration, contact time and ion strength on NH4+ and PO3-4 removal by FP-g-PKA/PVA semi-IPNs hydrogel were investigated using batch adsorption experiments. The results indicated that the hydrogel had high adsorption capacities and fast adsorption rates for NH4+ and PO3-4 in wide pH levels ranging from 4.0 to 9.0. Kinetic analysis presented that both NH4+ and PO3-4 removal were closely fitted with the pseudo-second-order model. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherms of hydrogel were best represented by the Freundlich model. The adsorption-desorption experimental results showed the sustainable stability of FP-g-PKA/PVA semi-IPNs hydrogel for NH4+ and PO3-4 removal. Overall, FP-g-PKA/PVA could be considered as an efficient material for the removal and recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus with the agronomic reuse as a fertilizer.

Abstract
A novel wheat straw cellulose-g-poly (potassium acrylate)/polyvinyl alcohol (WSC-g-PKA/PVA) semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) superabsorbent resin (SAR) was prepared by graft copolymerization. The structure and performance of the WSC-g-PKA/PVA semi-IPNs SAR was studied and compared with those of wheat straw cellulose-g-poly (potassium acrylate) (WSC-g-PKA) SAR. The effects of various experimental parameters such as solution pH, concentration, contact time and ion strength on NH4(+) and PO4(3-) removal from solutions were investigated. Equilibrium isotherm data of adsorption of both NH4(+) and PO4(3-) were well fitted to the Freundlich model. Kinetic analysis showed that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more suitable for describing the whole adsorption process of NH4(+) and PO4(3-) on SARs. Overall, WSC-g-PKA/PVA semi-IPNs SAR showed better properties in comparison with WSC-g-PKA SAR and it could be considered as one efficient material for the removal and recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus with the agronomic reuse as a fertilizer.
