Abstract
Magnetic mesoporous carbon (MMC) and magnetic activated carbon (MAC) are good functionalized carbon materials to use when applying environmental techniques. In this work, a series of efficient magnetic composite adsorbents containing Fe3O4 and carbon were prepared successfully and used for the adsorption of Cr(VI) ions in petrochemical wastewater. The morphology and structure of these magnetic adsorbents were characterized with FTIR, TG, XRD, VSM, BET, and SEM technologies. The effect of different factors, such as pH, adsorption time, initial Cr(VI) ions' concentration, Fe3O4 loading, and adsorption time, on the adsorption behavior were discussed. The results showed that the 8%Fe3O4@MMC adsorbent exhibited a high removal rate, reutilization, and large adsorption capacity. The corresponding adsorption capacity and removal rate could reach 132.80 mg·g-1 and 99.60% when the pH value, adsorption time, and initial Cr(VI) ions' concentration were 2, 180 min, and 80 mg·L-1 at 298 K. Four kinds of adsorption isotherm models were used for fitting the experimental data by the 8%Fe3O4@MMC adsorbent at different temperatures in detail, and a kinetic model and thermodynamic analysis also were performed carefully. The reutilization performance was investigated, and the Fe3O4@MMC adsorbent exhibited greater advantage in the adsorption of Cr(VI) ions. These good performances can be attributed to a unique uniform pore structure, different crystalline phases of Fe3O4 particles, and adsorption potential rule. Hence, the 8%Fe3O4@MMC adsorbent can be used in industrial petrochemical wastewater treatment.

Abstract
In this research, an imidazolium-based polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) gel was effectively synthesized in one step via electron beam (EB) radiation technology. The synthesized gel with gel fraction of 78% under 80 kGy was used for the adsorption and separation of Re(VII) and U(VI). The structure of the gel was characterized by FTIR, SEM, BET, and XPS. Furthermore, batch adsorption was experimented to explore its performance of Re(VII) and U(VI) removal. The two adsorption processes all more fitted the Langmuir isotherm model with the maximum adsorption capacities of 892.9 mg/g for Re(VII) and 243.9 mg/g for U(VI). The adsorption reached equilibrium within 1 min for Re(VII), while within 4 min for U(VI), showing its greatly rapid adsorption rate because of its three-dimensional porous network structure. In addition, the separation experiments of Re/U replied that PIL gel could effectively separate Re(VII) from the simulated uranium leaching solution. Regeneration experiments present the good reusability of PIL gel. This work demonstrated the practical application of EB-radiation technology in the synthesis of PIL gel, which is a promising adsorbent for Re(VII) and U(VI) recovery .

Abstract
Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) is a widely available biobased source for function material. In this work, a kind of new efficient magnetic composite adsorbent containing Fe3O4 and SC was prepared successfully and used for the removal of Cr(VI) ions in petrochemical wastewater. The morphology and structure of this magnetic adsorbent were characterized with FT-IR, TG, XRD, VSM, SEM and XPS. The effect of the different factors such as pH, adsorption time, initial Cr(VI) ions concentration and adsorption temperature on the adsorption behavior were investigated. The results showed that 10%-Fe3O4@SC exhibited high removal rate, reutilization and large removal capacity. The corresponding removal capacity and removal rate could reach 128.03 mg/g and 96.02% when the pH value was 2, adsorption time was 180 min, and initial Cr(VI) ions concentration were 80 mg/L at 298 K. The kinetics followed the pseudo-first-order, which indicated that the adsorption behavior of 10%-Fe3O4@SC for Cr(VI) ions belonged to the physical adsorption and chemical adsorption co-existence. The thermodynamic study showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic. It still showed better adsorption performance and reutilization after the fifth adsorption-desorption experiment. The possible mechanism of Cr(VI) ions adsorption onto the 10%-Fe3O4@SC magnetic adsorbent has been discussed. Hence, this new adsorbent will be a candidate for industry-level applications in petrochemical wastewater containing Cr(VI) ions.

Abstract
Yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae biomass was applied for rhenium and accompanying elements (copper and molybdenum) removal from single- and multi-component systems (Re, Re-Mo, Re-Cu, and Re-Mo-Cu). Yeast biomass was characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The effects of biosorption experimental parameters such as solution pH (2.0-6.0), rhenium concentration (10-100 mg/L), time of interaction (5-120 min), and temperature (20-50 °C) have been discussed in detail. Maximum removal of rhenium (75-84%) and molybdenum (85%) was attained at pH 2.0, while pH 3.0-5.0 was more favorable for copper ions removal (53-68%). The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models were used to describe the equilibrium sorption of rhenium on yeast biomass. Langmuir isotherm shows the maximum yeast adsorption capacities toward rhenium ions ranged between 7.7 and 33 mg/g. Several kinetic models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich) were applied to define the best correlation for each metal. Biosorption of metal ions was well-fitted by Elovich and pseudo-first-order models. The negative free energy reflected the feasibility and spontaneous nature of the biosorption process. Saccharomyces cerevisiae biomass can be considered as a perspective biosorbent for metal removal.

Synthesis of ZnO nanoparticle-anchored biochar composites for the selective removal of perrhenate, a surrogate for pertechnetate, from radioactive effluents. Abstract
Pertechnetate (TcO4-) is a component of low-activity waste (LAW) fractions of legacy nuclear waste, and the adsorption removal of TcO4- from LAW effluents would greatly benefit the site remediation process. However, available adsorbent materials lack the desired combination of low cost, radiolytic stability, and high selectivity. In this study, a ZnO nanoparticle-anchored biochar composite (ZBC) was fabricated and applied to potentially separate TcO4- from radioactive effluents. The as-synthesized material exhibited γ radiation resistance and superhydrophobicity, with a strong sorption capacity of 25,916 mg/kg for perrhenate (ReO4-), which was used in this study as a surrogate for radioactive pertechnetate (TcO4-). Additionally, the selectivity for ReO4- exceeded that for the competing ions I-, NO2-, NO3-, SO42-, PO43-, Cu2+, Fe3+, Al3+, and UO22+. These unique features show that ZBC is capable of selectively removing ReO4- from Hanford LAW melter off-gas scrubber simulant effluent. This selectivity stems from the synergistic effects of both the superhydrophobic surface of the sorbent and the inherent nature of sorbates. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that ReO4- can form stable complexes on both the (100) and (002) planes of ZnO, of which, the (002) complexes have greater stability. Electron transfer from ReO4- on (002) was greater than that on (100). These phenomena may be because (002) has a lower surface energy than (100). Partial density of state (PDOS) analysis further confirms that ReO4- is chemisorbed on ZBC, which agrees with the findings of the Elovich kinetic model. This work provides a feasible pathway for scale-up to produce high-efficiency and cost-effective biosorbents for the removal of radionuclides.

Abstract
Highly efficient removal of metal ion pollutants, such as toxic and nuclear waste-related metal ions, remains a serious task from the biological and environmental standpoint because of their harmful effects on human health and the environment. Recently, highly porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with excellent chemical stability and abundant functional groups, have represented a new addition to the area of capturing various types of hazardous metal ion pollutants. This review focuses on recent progress in reported MOFs and MOF-based composites as superior adsorbents for the efficient removal of toxic and nuclear waste-related metal ions. Aspects related to the interaction mechanisms between metal ions and MOF-based materials are systematically summarized, including macroscopic batch experiments, microscopic spectroscopy analysis, and theoretical calculations. The adsorption properties of various MOF-based materials are assessed and compared with those of other widely used adsorbents. Finally, we propose our personal insights into future research opportunities and challenges in the hope of stimulating more researchers to engage in this new field of MOF-based materials for environmental pollution management.

Abstract
In this work, a biochar was prepared from bamboo (Acidosasa edulis) shoot shell through slow pyrolysis (under 300-700 °C). Characterization with various tools showed that the biochar surface was highly hydrophobic and also had more basic functional groups. Batch sorption experiments showed that the biochar had strong sorption ability to perrhenate (a chemical surrogate for pertechnetate) with maximum sorption capacity of 46.46 mg/g, which was significantly higher than commercial coconut shell activated carbon and some adsorbents reported previously. Desorption experiments showed that more than 94% of total perrhenate adsorbed could be recovered using 0.1 mol/L KOH as a desorption medium. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the recovery of perrhenate by the biochars was mainly through surface adsorption mechanisms involving both high hydrophobicity and high basic sites of biochar surface.

Abstract
The organic-inorganic hybrid material of polyaniline/titanium(IV) (PANI/Ti(HPO4)2) was synthesized by an oxidative polymerization reaction. The PANI/Ti(HPO4)2 was applied to remove Re(VII). The size of Ti(HPO4)2 nanoplates has no obvious effect on the sorption capacity. The effects of various environmental factors (such as pH, extra anions (NO3(-) and MO4(2-)) and temperature) on Re(VII) sorption to PANI/Ti(HPO4)2 were investigated by batch experiments. The sorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model. The nitrogen-containing functional groups of PANI promoted Re(VII) sorption. The PANI/Ti(HPO4)2 exhibited excellent maximum sorption capacity to Re(VII) (47.62 mg g(-1)), which was superior to that of PANI (10.75 mg g(-1)) and much higher than that of many other sorbents. The sorption isotherms of Re(VII) can be well fitted with the Langmuir model. Re(VII) sorption decreased with increasing solution pH at pH > 4.0, which implied that Re(VII) sorption on PANI/Ti(HPO4)2 might be attributed to the outer-sphere complexation between amine and imine groups on the surface of PANI/Ti(HPO4)2 and Re(VII). This study implies that the hybrid material of PANI/Ti(HPO4)2 can be regarded as a potential sorbent to remove Re(VII) and its analogues from large volumes of aqueous solutions.
