Molecular insights into linkages among free-floating macrophyte-derived organic matter, the fate of antibiotic residues, and antibiotic resistance genes

Macrophyte rhizospheric dissolved organic matter (ROM) served as widespread abiotic components in aquatic ecosystems, and its effects on antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) could not be ignored. However, specific influencing mechanisms for ROM on the fate of antibiotic residues and expression of ARGs still remained unclear. Herein, laboratory hydroponic experiments for water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) were carried out to explore mutual interactions among ROM, sulfamethoxazole (SMX), bacterial community, and ARGs expression. Results showed ROM directly affect SMX concentrations through the binding process, while CO and N-H groups were main binding sites for ROM. Dynamic changes of ROM molecular composition diversified the DOM pool due to microbe-mediated oxidoreduction, with enrichment of heteroatoms (N, S, P) and decreased aromaticity. Microbial community analysis showed SMX pressure significantly stimulated the succession of bacterial structure in both bulk water and rhizospheric biofilms. Furthermore, network analysis further confirmed ROM bio-labile compositions as energy sources and electron shuttles directly influenced microbial structure, thereby facilitating proliferation of antibiotic resistant bacteria (Methylotenera, Sphingobium, Az spirillum) and ARGs (sul1, sul2, intl1). This investigation will provide scientific supports for the control of antibiotic residues and corresponding ARGs in aquatic ecosystems.

Facile introduction of coordinative Fe into oxygen-enriched graphite carbon nitride for efficient photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline

Tetracycline (TC) antibiotics have been widely used over the past decades, and their massive discharge led to serious water pollution. Photo-Fenton process has gained ever-increasing attention for its excellent oxidizing ability and friendly solar energy utilization ability in TC polluted water treatment. This work introduced coordinative Fe into oxygen-enriched graphite carbon nitride (OCN) to form FeOCN composites for efficient photo-Fenton process. Hemin was chosen as the source to provide the source of coordinative Fe-Nx groups. The degradation efficiency of TC reached 82.1 % within 40 min of irradiation, and remained 76.9 % after five runs of reaction. The degradation intermediates of TC were detected and the possible degradation pathways were gained. It was found that h+, OH, and O2- played major roles in TC degradation. Notably, the photo-Fenton performance of FeOCN was stable in highly saline water or strong acid/base environment (pH 3.0-9.0). Besides, H2O2 can be generated in-situ in this photo-Fenton process, which is favorable for practical application. It can be anticipated that the coordinative FeOCN composites will promote the application of photo-Fenton oxidation process in TC polluted water treatment.

Systematic tracking of nitrogen sources in complex river catchments: Machine learning approach based on microbial metagenomics

Tracking nitrogen pollution sources is crucial for the effective management of water quality; however, it is a challenging task due to the complex contaminative scenarios in the freshwater systems. The contaminative pattern variations can induce quick responses of aquatic microorganisms, making them sensitive indicators of pollution origins. In this study, the soil and water assessment tool, accompanied by a detailed pollution source database, was used to detect the main nitrogen pollution sources in each sub-basin of the Liuyang River watershed. Thus, each sub-basin was assigned to a known class according to SWAT outputs, including point source pollution-dominated area, crop cultivation pollution-dominated area, and the septic tank pollution-dominated area. Based on these outputs, the random forest (RF) model was developed to predict the main pollution sources from different river ecosystems using a series of input variable groups (e.g., natural macroscopic characteristics, river physicochemical properties, 16S rRNA microbial taxonomic composition, microbial metagenomic data containing taxonomic and functional information, and their combination). The accuracy and the Kappa coefficient were used as the performance metrics for the RF model. Compared with the prediction performance among all the input variable groups, the prediction performance of the RF model was significantly improved using metagenomic indices as inputs. Among the metagenomic data-based models, the combination of the taxonomic information with functional information of all the species achieved the highest accuracy (0.84) and increased median Kappa coefficient (0.70). Feature importance analysis was used to identify key features that could serve as indicators for sudden pollution accidents and contribute to the overall function of the river system. The bacteria Rhabdochromatium marinum, Frankia, Actinomycetia, and Competibacteraceae were the most important species, whose mean decrease Gini indices were 0.0023, 0.0021, 0.0019, and 0.0018, respectively, although their relative abundances ranged only from 0.0004 to 0.1 %. Among the top 30 important variables, functional variables constituted more than half, demonstrating the remarkable variation in the microbial functions among sites with distinct pollution sources and the key role of functionality in predicting pollution sources. Many functional indicators related to the metabolism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, such as K24693, K25621, K16048, and K14952, emerged as significant important factors in distinguishing nitrogen pollution origins. With the shortage of pollution source data in developing regions, this suggested approach offers an economical, quick, and accurate solution to locate the origins of water nitrogen pollution using the metagenomic data of microbial communities.

Tunable schiff-based networks with different bonding sites for enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation: The effects of steric hindrance

Organic polymers hold great potential in photocatalysis considering their low cost, structural tailorability, and well-controlled degree of conjugation for efficient electron transfer. Among the polymers, Schiff base networks (SNWs) with high nitrogen content have been noticed. Herein, a series of SNWs is synthesized based on the melamine units and dialdehydes with different bonding sites. The chemical and structural variation caused by steric hindrance as well as the related photoelectric properties of the SNW samples are investigated, along with the application exploration on photocatalytic degradation and energy production. The results demonstrate that only SNW-o based on o-phthalaldehyde responds to visible light, which extends to over 550 nm. SNW-o shows the highest tetracycline degradation rate of 0.02516 min-1, under 60-min visible light irradiation. Moreover, the H2O2 production of SNW-o is 2.14 times higher than that of g-C3N4. The enhanced photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the enlarged visible light adsorption and intramolecular electron transfer. This study indicates the possibility to regulate the optical and electrical properties of organic photocatalysts on a molecular level, providing an effective strategy for rational supramolecular engineering to the applications of organic materials in photocatalysis.

Mediated Peroxymonosulfate Activation at the Single Atom Fe-N3 O1 Sites: Synergistic Degradation of Antibiotics by Two Non-Radical Pathways

The activation of persulfates to degrade refractory organic pollutants is a hot issue in advanced oxidation right now. Here, it is reported that single-atom Fe-incorporated carbon nitride (Fe-CN-650) can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal. Through some characterization techniques and DFT calculation, it is proved that Fe single atoms in Fe-CN-650 exist mainly in the form of Fe-N3 O1 coordination, and Fe-N3 O1 exhibited better affinity for PMS than the traditional Fe-N4 structure. The degradation rate constant of SMX in the Fe-CN-650/PMS system reached 0.472 min-1 , and 90.80% of SMX can still be effectively degraded within 10 min after five consecutive recovery cycles. The radical quenching experiment and electrochemical analysis confirm that the pollutants are mainly degraded by two non-radical pathways through 1 O2 and Fe(IV)═O induced at the Fe-N3 O1 sites. In addition, the intermediate products of SMX degradation in the Fe-CN-650/PMS system show toxicity attenuation or non-toxicity. This study offers valuable insights into the design of carbon-based single-atom catalysts and provides a potential remediation technology for the optimum activation of PMS to disintegrate organic pollutants.

Preparation and Application of Single-Atom Cobalt Catalysts in Organic Synthesis and Environmental Remediation

The development of high-performance catalysts plays a crucial role in facilitating chemical production and reducing environmental contamination. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), a class of catalysts that bridge the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, have garnered increasing attention because of their unique activity, selectivity, and stability in many pivotal reactions. Meanwhile, the scarcity of precious metal SACs calls for the arrival of cost-effective SACs. Cobalt, as a common non-noble metal, possesses tremendous potential in the field of single-atom catalysis. Despite their potential, reviews about single-atom Co catalysts (Co-SACs) are lacking. Accordingly, this review thoroughly summarized various preparation methodologies of Co-SACs, particularly pyrolysis; its application in the specific domain of organic synthesis and environmental remediation is discussed as well. The structure-activity relationship and potential catalytic mechanism of Co-SACs are elucidated through some representative reactions. The imminent challenges and development prospects of Co-SACs are discussed in detail. The findings and insights provided herein can guide further exploration and development in this charming area of catalyst design, leading to the realization of efficient and sustainable catalytic processes.

Insight into the selection of oxidant in persulfate activation system: The effect of the target pollutant properties

As a rising branch of advanced oxidation processes, persulfate activation has attracted growing attention. Unlike catalysts that have been widely studied, the selection of persulfate is previously overlooked. In this study, the affecting factors of persulfates were studied. The effect of target pollutant properties on superior persulfate species (the species with a higher degradation efficiency) was investigated by multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/persulfate catalytic systems. Innovatively, the EHOMO (or vertical ionization potential (VIP)) value of the target pollutant was proposed to be an index to judge the superior persulfate species, and the threshold is VIP= 6.397-6.674 eV, EHOMO= -8.035∼- 7.810 eV, respectively. To be specific, when the VIP of phenolic compounds is higher (or EHOMO of phenolic compounds is lower) than the threshold, the catalytic performance of peroxymonosulfate would be higher than that of peroxydisulfate. Moreover, the effects of coexisting cations on peroxydisulfate superior species were further investigated. It was illustrated that the hydrated cation radius of coexisting cations would influence the pollutant degradation efficiency under some circumstances. This study provides a new approach to improve the cost of persulfate activation systems and promotes the underlying downstream application of persulfate activation systems.

Tuning the intrinsic catalytic sites of magnetite to concurrently enhance the reduction of H2O2 and O2: Mechanism analysis and application potential evaluation

Heterogeneous Fenton-like process based on H₂O₂ activation has been widely tested for water purification, but its application still faces some challenges such as the use of high doses of chemicals (including catalysts and H₂O₂). Herein, a facile co-precipitation method was utilized for small-scale production (∼50 g) of oxygen vacancies (OVs)-containing Fe₃O₄ (V_o-Fe₃O₄) for H₂O₂ activation. Experimental and theoretical results collaboratively verified that H₂O₂ adsorbed on the Fe site of Fe₃O₄ tended to lose electrons and generate O₂^•-. While the localized electron from OVs of V_o-Fe₃O₄ could assist in donating electrons to H₂O₂ adsorbed on OVs sites, this allowed more H₂O₂ to be activated to ^•OH, which was 3.5 folds higher than Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂ system. Moreover, the OVs sites promoted dissolved oxygen activation and decreased the quenching of O₂^•- by Fe(III), thus promoting the generation of ¹O₂. Consequently, the fabricated V_o-Fe₃O₄ achieved much higher oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation rate (91.6%) than Fe₃O₄ (35.4%) at a low catalyst (50 mg/L) and H₂O₂ dosage (2 mmol/L). Importantly, further integration of V_o-Fe₃O₄ into fixed-bed Fenton-like reactor could effectively eliminate OTC (>80%) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) (21.3%∼50%) within the running period. This study provides promising strategies for enhancing the H₂O₂ utilization of Fe mineral.

Lysogenic bacteriophages encoding arsenic resistance determinants promote bacterial community adaptation to arsenic toxicity

Emerging evidence from genomics gives us a glimpse into the potential contribution of lysogenic bacteriophages (phages) to the environmental adaptability of their hosts. However, it is challenging to quantify this kind of contribution due to the lack of appropriate genetic markers and the associated controllable environmental factors. Here, based on the unique transformable nature of arsenic (the controllable environmental factor), a series of flooding microcosms was established to investigate the contribution of arsM-bearing lysogenic phages to their hosts' adaptation to trivalent arsenic [As(III)] toxicity, where arsM is the marker gene associated with microbial As(III) detoxification. In the 15-day flooding period, the concentration of As(III) was significantly increased, and this elevated As(III) toxicity visibly inhibited the bacterial population, but the latter quickly adapted to As(III) toxicity. During the flooding period, some lysogenic phages re-infected new hosts after an early burst, while others persistently followed the productive cycle (i.e., lytic cycle). The unique phage-host interplay contributed to the rapid spread of arsM among soil microbiota, enabling the quick recovery of the bacterial community. Moreover, the higher abundance of arsM imparted a greater arsenic methylation capability to soil microbiota. Collectively, this study provides experimental evidence for lysogenic phages assisting their hosts in adapting to an extreme environment, which highlights the ecological perspectives on lysogenic phage-host mutualism.

Insight into the effect of pyrolysis temperature on photoreactivity of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter: Impacts of aromaticity and carbonyl groups

Practical application of biochar may result in more biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (denoted as BDOM) inevitably release into surface waters by infiltration and surface runoff. The photochemical reaction of BDOM has gained intense attention, which played a key role in the fate of organic contaminants. However, the relationships between specific characteristics of BDOM and its photoreactivity are still uncertain. In this study, the characteristics of BDOM pyrolyzed from rice husk derived biochar at different temperature (from 400 °C to 700 °C) and their effect on the photodegradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) were carefully investigated. The ¹³C NMR and EEM results indicated the dominated component of BDOM was gradually turned from humic acid like substances with low aromaticity to high aromaticity with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups as pyrolytic temperature increases. Experimental results showed that the apparent rate constants (k_obs) of BDOM700 (4.53 × 10^-2 min^-1) for OTC photodegradation was approximately one order of magnitude higher than BDOM400 (4.52 × 10^-3 min^-1), which was closely correlated with their aromaticity (R² = 0.944). It was found that ³BDOM* rather than ¹O₂ played the major role in BDOM mediated photodegradation of OTC (80.13 % vs 14.34 %), and the carbonyl-containing group was identified as the main ³BDOM* precursor by NaBH₄ reduction experiment. This work highlighted both aromaticity and carbonyl group contents were critical indicators for assessing the potential to generate ³BDOM* and corresponding photoreactivity.

Spatial confinement: A green pathway to promote the oxidation processes for organic pollutants removal from water

Organic pollutants removal from water is pressing owing to the great demand for clean water. Oxidation processes (OPs) are the commonly used method. However, the efficiency of most OPs is limited owing to the poor mass transfer process. Spatial confinement is a burgeoning way to solve this limitation by use of nanoreactor. Spatial confinement in OPs would (i) alter the transport characteristics of protons and charges; (ii) bring about molecular orientation and rearrangement; (iii) cause the dynamic redistribution of active sites in catalyst and reduce the entropic barrier that is high in unconfined space. So far, spatial confinement has been utilized for various OPs, such as Fenton, persulfate, and photocatalytic oxidation. A comprehensive summary and discussion on the fundamental mechanisms of spatial confinement mediated OPs is needed. Herein, the application, performance and mechanisms of spatial confinement mediated OPs are overviewed firstly. Subsequently, the features of spatial confinement and their effects on OPs are discussed in detail. Furthermore, environmental influences (including environmental pH, organic matter and inorganic ions) are studied with analyzing their intrinsic connection with the features of spatial confinement in OPs. Lastly, challenges and future development direction of spatial confinement mediated OPs are proposed.

Antibiotic resistance in soil-plant systems: A review of the source, dissemination, influence factors, and potential exposure risks

As an emerging environmental contaminant, the widespread of antibiotic resistance has caused a series of environmental issues and human health concerns. A load of antibiotic residues induced by agricultural practices have exerted selective pressure to bacterial communities in the soil-plant system, which facilitated the occurrence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) through horizontal gene transfer. As a result, the enrichment of ARGs within crops at harvest under the influence of food ingestion could lead to critical concerns of public health. In this review, the prevalence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance in the soil-plant system are highlighted. Moreover, different underlying mechanisms and detection methods for ARGs transfer between the soil environment and plant compartments are summarized and discussed. On the other hand, a wide range of influencing factors for the transfer and distribution of antibiotic resistance within the soil-plant system are also presented and discussed. In response to exposure of antibiotic residues and resistomes, corresponding hazard identification assessments have been summarized, which could provide beneficial guides of the toxicological tolerance for the general population. Finally, further research priorities for detection and management ARGs spread are also suggested.

Unveiling the roles of dissolved organic matters derived from different biochar in biochar/persulfate system: Mechanism and toxicity

Biochar has been frequently used as a persulfate (PS) activator due to its attractive properties, but dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from the non‑carbonized part of biochar has received less attention, not to mention its specific role and impact in biochar/PS systems. In this study, wheat straw, municipal sludge, and swine bone were selected as the representative feed stocks of biochar. Subsequently, these three types of biochar were adopted to explore the roles of DOM in biochar/PS systems. Although the composition and amount of DOM derived from different biochar were discrepant, they exhibited similar effect in biochar/PS systems. To be specific, the pore-clogging effect of DOM on biochar suppressed the adsorption capacity and catalytic performance of the three biochar. Furthermore, the removal of DOM decreased the environmental risk of these biochar/PS systems and enhanced the stability of the involved biochar. With respect to the variation in degradation mechanism, the removal of DOM increased the proportion of electron transfer pathway in unison, but the diminution in the roles of O₂^•¯ and ¹O₂ was more remarkable in bone-derived-biochar/PS systems. Additionally, the toxicity test illustrated that the leakage and accumulation of DOM were toxic to Chlorella sp., and the DOM from sludge-derived-biochar presented the highest toxicity. Overall, this study analyzes the roles of DOM derived from different biochar in biochar/PS systems and evaluates their environmental risk, which contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the fate of DOM derived from biochar.

Catalyst-Free Photochemical Activation of Peroxymonosulfate in Xanthene-Rich Systems for Fenton-Like Synergistic Decontamination: Efficacy of Proton Transfer Process

Catalyst-free visible light assisted Fenton-like catalysis offers opportunities to achieve the sustainable water decontamination, but the synergistic decontamination mechanisms are still unclear, especially the effect of proton transfer process (PTP). The conversion of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in photosensitive dye-enriched system was detailed. The photo-electron transfer between excited dye and PMS triggered the efficient activation of PMS and enhanced the production of reactive species. Photochemistry behavior analysis and DFT calculations revealed that PTP was the crucial factor to determine the decontamination performance, leading to the transformation of dye molecules. The excitation process inducing activation of whole system was composed of low energy excitations, and the electrons and holes were almost contributed by LUMO and HOMO. This work provided new ideas for the design of catalyst-free sustainable system for efficient decontamination.

Carbonyl and defect of metal-free char trigger electron transfer and O2- in persulfate activation for Aniline aerofloat degradation

Residual flotation reagents in mineral processing wastewater can trigger severe ecological threats to the local groundwater if they are discharged without treatment. Metal-free biochar-induced persulfate-advanced oxidation processes (KCBC/PS) were used in this study to elucidate the degradation of aniline aerofloat (AAF) - a typical flotation reagent. In KCBC/PS system, AAF can be removed at low doses of catalyst (KCBC, 0.05 g/L) and oxidant (PS, 0.3 mM) additions with high efficiency. The analysis revealed the dominance of O₂^•- among the identified reactive oxygen species (ROS), which achieved deeper mineralization for the AAF degradation in the KCBC/PS system. The role of the electron transfer mechanism was equally important; the importance was corroborated by the chemical quenching experiments, electron spin resonance (ESR) detection, probe experiments, and electrochemical analysis. It benefited from the electron transfer mechanism in the KCBC/PS system and exhibited a wide pH adaptation (3.5-11) and high resistance to inorganic anions for real mining wastewater treatment. Combined with theoretical calculations and other analyses, the carbonyl group was deemed to be the active site of the non-radical pathway of biochar, while the site of the conversion of SO₄^•- to superoxide radicals by biochar activation represented a defect. These findings revealed a synergistic effect of multiple active sites on PS activation in biochar-based materials. Moreover, the intermediate degradation products of AAF from mass spectrometry indicated a possible pathway through the density functional theory (DFT) method, which was effective in reducing the environmental toxicity of pollutants for the first time according to the T.E.S.T software and seed germination experiments. Overall, our study proposed a novel modification strategy for cost-effective and environmentally friendly biochar-based catalysts, while also deepening our understanding of the mechanism of activation of persulfate by metal-free carbon-based materials.

Land-Water Transport and Sources of Nitrogen Pollution Affecting the Structure and Function of Riverine Microbial Communities

The characterization of variations in riverine microbiota that stem from contaminant sources and transport modes is important for understanding biogeochemical processes. However, the association between complex anthropogenic nitrogen pollution and bacteria has not been extensively investigated owing to the difficulties faced while determining the distribution of nitrogen contaminants in watersheds. Here, we employed the Soil and Water Assessment Tool alongside microbiological analysis to explore microbial characteristics and their responses to complex nitrogen pollution patterns. Significant variations in microbial communities were observed in sub-basins with distinct land-water pollution transport modes. Point source-dominated areas (PSDAs) exhibited reduced microbial diversity, high number of denitrification groups, and increased nitrogen cycling compared with others. The negative relative deviations (-3.38) between the measured and simulated nitrate concentrations in PSDAs indicated that nitrate removal was more effective in PSDAs. Pollution sources were also closely associated with microbiota. Effluents from concentrated animal feeding operations were the primary factors relating to the microbiota compositions in PSDAs and balanced areas. In nonpoint source-dominated areas, contaminants from septic tanks become the most relevant sources to microbial community structures. Overall, this study expands our knowledge regarding microbial biogeochemistry in catchments and beyond by linking specific nitrogen pollution scenarios to microorganisms.

Rational design of cobalt sulfide anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon derived from cyanobacteria waste enables efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate for organic pollutants oxidation

With the increasing of eutrophication in water body, algae blooms have become one of the global environmental problems. The cyanobacteria waste has placed a severe burden on the environment and transforming cyanobacteria into functional materials may be a wise approach. Herein, cobaltous sulfide/nitrogen-doped biochar (N-BC/CoS_x) composite was synthesized by pyrolysis of cyanobacteria waste. The N-BC/CoS_x showed excellent performance in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for enrofloxacin (ENR) degradation, which could remove more than 90% ENR within 60 min. The influencing factors of pH and catalyst dosage on ENR removal efficiency were studied. The N-BC/CoS_x showed good recyclability in the cycle runs. The radicals (O₂^•-, OH andSO₄^•-) and the non-radical species (charge transfer and ¹O₂) were generated in the ENR degradation. The cycle of Co(II)/Co(III) m ay contribute to the radical generation process. This work proved that metal sulfide modified cyanobacteria biochar has a specific application value in water pollution control and provides a new method for resource utilization of cyanobacteria.

Microplastics influence the fate of antibiotics in freshwater environments: Biofilm formation and its effect on adsorption behavior

Microplastics (MPs) are substrates available for biofilms colonization in natural water environments. The biofilms formation may enhance the ability of MPs to adsorb harmful contaminants. Herein, we investigated the biofilms formation of three different MPs (PVC, PA and HDPE) in simulated natural environment, and observed the chemical structure, charge property, hydrophobicity and other properties of MPs affect microbial biomass and community composition. More importantly, potential pathogens were found in all three MPs biofilms. Furthermore, the adsorption capacities of original MPs and biological aging MPs for norfloxacin (NOR) was compared. HDPE has the largest adsorption capacity for NOR, while PA has the smallest adsorption capacity for NOR. It was concluded that the formation of biofilms enhanced the adsorption of NOR by 50.60 %, 24.17 % and 46.02 % for PVC, PA and HDPE, respectively. In addition, hydrogen-bond interaction, electrostatic interaction and hydrophobic interaction were found to dominate the adsorption of NOR by MPs. Our study contributed to improve the understanding of the interactions between aging MPs and contaminants in the natural water environments, and provided essential information for ecological risk assessment of MPs.

Single atom Mn anchored on N-doped porous carbon derived from spirulina for catalyzed peroxymonosulfate to degradation of emerging organic pollutants

Highly efficient single atom catalysts are critical to substantially promote for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to organic pollutant degradation, but it remains a challenge at present. Herein, single atom Mn anchored on N-doped porous carbon (SA-Mn-NSC) was synthesized by ball milling of Mn-doped carbon nitride and spirulina biochar to dominantly activate PMS. The precursor of carbon nitride and spirulina possessed a strong coordinating capability for Mn(II), facilitating the formation of highly dispersed nitrogen-coordinated Mn sites (Mn-N₄). The SA-Mn-NSC catalyst exhibited high activity and stability in the heterogeneous activation of PMS to degrade a wide range of pollutants within 10 min, showing an outstanding degradation rate constant of 0.31 min^-1 in enrofloxacin (ENR) degradation. The high surface density of Mn-N₄ sites and abundant interconnected meso-macro pores were highly favorable for activating PMS to produce ¹O₂ and high-valent manganese (Mn(IV)) for pollutant degradation. This work offers a new pathway of using a low-cost and easily accessible single-atom catalysts (SACs) and could inspire more catalytic oxidation strategies.

Phage-host interactions: The neglected part of biological wastewater treatment

In wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), the stable operation of biological wastewater treatment is strongly dependent on the stability of associated microbiota. Bacteriophages (phages), viruses that specifically infect bacteria and archaea, are highly abundant and diverse in WWTPs. Although phages do not have known metabolic functions for themselves, they can shape functional microbiota via various phage-host interactions to impact biological wastewater treatment. However, the developments of phage-host interaction in WWTPs and their impact on biological wastewater treatment are overlooked. Here, we review the current knowledge regarding the phage-host interactions in biological wastewater treatment, mainly focusing on the characteristics of different phage populations, the phage-driven changes in functional microbiota, and the potential driving factors of phage-host interactions. We also discuss the efforts required further to understand and manipulate the phage-host interactions in biological wastewater treatment. Overall, this review advocates more attention to the phage dynamics in WWTPs.

Alfalfa biochar supported Mg-Fe layered double hydroxide as filter media to remove trace metal(loid)s from stormwater

Polluted stormwater (PSW) treatment is becoming increasingly important because of the existence of multiple pollutants from non-point pollution sources. Alfalfa biochar loaded with Mg/Fe layered double hydroxide (AF-LDH) was successfully synthesized to remove trace metal(loid)s from stormwater. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of metal(loid)s in a mono-component system and the reusability of the composite materials was investigated in this study. The result showed that the maximum removal efficiency for Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), As(V), and Cr(VI) were 98.98 %, 98.11 %, 97.88 %, 97.71 %, 98.81 %, and 50.89 %, respectively, when added calcined AF-LDH (AF-LDO) composite material to the multi-component solution. The AF-LDH and AF-LDO could efficiently remove trace pollutants (10-100 μg/L) from multi-component solution, especially for AF-LDO, which could completely remove the tested six trace metal(loid)s. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared spectra and X-ray diffraction characterizations supported the Mg/Fe layered double hydroxide reconstruction. The main mechanisms of Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) (cationic metals) removal were ion exchange and surface precipitation, whereas As(V) and Cr(VI) (anionic metals) were mainly dislodged through the formation of surface complexation, electrostatic attraction, and interlayer anion exchange, concerning the -OH and -COOH of AF-LDH. Importantly, the results of the column experiment demonstrated that AF-LDO was superior to AF-LDH for anionic metal removal from stormwater. In this study, we synthesized AF-LDH and AF-LDO for trace metal(loid) removal and proposed a new and practical approach for stormwater purification.

Advanced oxidation processes for the elimination of microplastics from aqueous systems: Assessment of efficiency, perspectives and limitations

Microplastics act as a vector of heavy metals, organic pollutants, pathogens and resistance genes in the environment further aggravate the pollution of plastics. The conventional wastewater/water treatment processes can physically capture and remove most of microplastics, but the success rates varies. How to quickly remove a large amount of microplastics from aqueous system is a key research topic at present. Recently, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) as a green elimination strategy has attracted attention because of its effective elimination, strong destruction and safety. The molecular chain of microplastics can be gradually degraded into small molecular organics until H₂O and CO₂ by strong oxidizing free radical produced by AOPs. Unfortunately, problematically, the elimination of microplastics in aqueous system by AOPs is recently carried out on a laboratory scale. The application and implementation of this strategy are restricted by long reaction time, low liquid phase degradation efficiency and the formation of nanoplastics. Generally, the technology is still in its infancy, and most studies are carried out under laboratory conditions. The degradation of microplastics in aqueous system also needs appropriate conditions, but it is not always feasible under field conditions in AOPs. Although AOPs can be used as a green degradation technology to eliminate microplastics in aqueous systems in theory, it still needs to be furtherly explored in practical application. Consequently, before AOPs as a green elimination strategy is successfully applied to the effective remove microplastics, more in-depth research is still required, such as the setting from single condition to complex environment, the transfer from laboratory scale to field scale, and systematic toxicity evaluation of corresponding products.

Microplastics in landfill and leachate: Occurrence, environmental behavior and removal strategies

Plastic wastes buried in landfill are gradually broken and decomposed into microplastics under physical, chemical and biological effects, bringing environmental risks to the exploitation of waste resources. Landfill leachate as a potential source of environmental microplastics has not good attention. Microplastics in leachate carry toxic and harmful pollutants and antibiotic resistance genes, and these vectors pose greater risks to human and environmental health without systematic treatment. Recently, the main technologies of landfill leachate treatment process include order batch activated sludge process, membrane biological reaction process, flocculation process, combined filtration process, and constructed wetland process. However, there is still little knowledge about microplastic removal of the existing leachate treatment facilities, and some technologies to alleviate the sources of such microplastics should be timely developed. This paper systematically summarizes the occurrence of plastics, microplastics and nanoplastics in leachate and their interactive pollution with other toxic pollutants. Meanwhile, the prospects of their environmental behaviors in landfill and leachate are put forward. The microplastic removal by existing leachate treatment equipment and the limitations and challenges to upgrading process of development and implementation are also discussed. The paper can provide a scientific basis for studying the fate of microplastics in landfill and leachate.

Processable Conjugated Microporous Polymer Gels and Monoliths: Fundamentals and Versatile Applications

Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) as a new type of conjugated polymers have attracted extensive attention in academia and industry because of the combination of microporous structure and π-electron conjugated structure. The construction and application of gels and monoliths based on CMPs constitute a fertile area of research, promising to provide solutions to complex environmental and energy issues. This review summarizes and objectively analyzes the latest advances in the construction and application of processable CMP gels and monoliths, linking the basic and enhanced properties to widespread applications. In this review, we open with a summary of the construction methods used to build CMP gels and monoliths and assess the feasibility of different preparation techniques and the advantages of the products. The CMP gels and monoliths with enhanced properties involving various special applications are then deliberated by highlighting relevant scientific literature and discussions. Finally, we present the issues and future of openness in the field, as well as come up with the major challenges hindering further development, to guide researchers in this field.

Insight into disinfection byproduct formation potential of aged biochar and its effects during chlorination

Biochar can achieve multiple benefits including solid waste management, polluted water remediation, carbon sequestration, and emission reduction. However, various environmental factors (such as temperature variations and dry-wet alternation) and microbial activity may lead to the fragmentation, dissolution, and oxidation of biochar. These accelerate the dissolution of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) and then influence disinfection byproducts formation potential (DBPFP) throughout the water treatment process. In this paper, biochars from six biomass feedstocks with five aging processes were prepared, and the DBPFP of biochar and its derived DOM were first studied systematically. Different aging processes might increase the DBPFP of biochar by increasing DOM content and changing the fraction distribution of DOM derived from biochar. Especially, the DBPFP of biochar increased apparently with the chemical aging process. Coexisting with the environmental concentration of humic acid, even aged biochar showed the potential to reduce DBPFP and integrated toxic risk value of the mixed system. In this study, the DBPFP of biochar-derived DOM during the disinfection process is confirmed, and the results can give information to the selection of biomass feedstocks of biochar and its service life in the water treatment process.

Managing Fenton-treated sediment with biochar and sheep manure compost: Effects on the evolutionary characteristics of bacterial community

Fenton oxidation is a widely used method for the fast and efficient treatment of contaminated sediment, but few studies have investigated the management of Fenton-treated sediment for resource utilization. In this study, the evolutionary characteristics of bacterial community composition in Fenton-treated riverine sediment were investigated using 16S rRNA gene sequencing after the incorporation of rice straw biochar and sheep manure compost. The Fenton treatment caused a decline in the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes from 39% to 8% on the 7th day, and using biochar and compost rapidly increased the relative abundance of Firmicutes from 13% to 61% and 57%, respectively. Applying 1.25 wt% biochar after the Fenton treatment contributed to high Shannon diversity indices of 4.80, 4.69, and 4.76 on the 7th, 28th, and 56th day, respectively. The reduced differences of Shannon indexes on the 56th day indicated that the bacterial diversity among different treatments tended to be similar over time. The genera Flavisolibacter and Bacillus were representatively detected on the 7th day in the untreated sediment and Fenton/biochar-treated sediment, respectively. The number of feature bacteria decreased significantly from 88 on the 7th day to 29 on the 56th day. The community functions for the carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles were sensitive to the Fenton-treatment and the subsequent treatment with biochar and compost. This study may provide a useful reference for follow-up work on the remediation of contaminated sediment using advanced oxidation processes, and promote the development of resource utilization of amended sediment.

Cobalt Single Atoms Anchored on Oxygen-Doped Tubular Carbon Nitride for Efficient Peroxymonosulfate Activation: Simultaneous Coordination Structure and Morphology Modulation

Simultaneous regulation of the coordination environment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) and engineering architectures with efficient exposed active sites are efficient strategies for boosting peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. We isolated cobalt atoms with dual nitrogen and oxygen coordination (Co-N₃ O₁ ) on oxygen-doped tubular carbon nitride (TCN) by pyrolyzing a hydrogen-bonded cyanuric acid melamine-cobalt acetate precursor. The theoretically constructed Co-N₃ O₁ moiety on TCN exhibited an impressive mass activity of 7.61×10⁵  min^-1  mol^-1 with high ¹ O₂ selectivity. Theoretical calculations revealed that the cobalt single atoms occupied a dual nitrogen and oxygen coordination environment, and that PMS adsorption was promoted and energy barriers reduced for the key *O intermediate that produced ¹ O₂ . The catalysts were attached to a widely used poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membrane to deliver an antibiotic wastewater treatment system with 97.5 % ciprofloxacin rejection over 10 hours, thereby revealing the suitability of the membrane for industrial applications.

The role of microplastics in altering arsenic fractionation and microbial community structures in arsenic-contaminated riverine sediments

The ability of microplastics (MPs) to interact with environmental pollutants is of great concern. Riverine sediments, as sinks for multi-pollutants, have been rarely studied for MPs risk evaluation. Meanwhile, MPs generated from biodegradable plastics are questioning the safety of the promising materials. In this study, we investigated the effects of typical non-degradable polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) MPs on sediment enzymes, arsenic (As) fractionation, and microbial community structures in As-contaminated riverine sediments. The results indicated that the presence of MPs (1% and 3%, w/w) led As transformed into more labile and bioavailable fractions in riverine sediments, especially under higher As and MPs levels. Analysis on microbial activities and community structures confirmed the strong potential of MPs in inhibiting microbial activities and shifting bacterial community succession patterns through enrichment of certain microbiota. Moreover, biodegradable PLA MPs presented stronger alterations in arsenic fractionation and microbial community structures than PE MPs did, which might be jointly attributed to adsorption behaviors, microbial alterations, and potential PLA degradation behaviors. The study indicated that MPs contamination increased As mobility and bioavailability, and shifted microbial communities in riverine sediments. Moreover, biodegradable MPs might lead to stronger microbial alterations and increases in As bioavailability, acting as a threat to ecological safety, which needed further exploration.

Enhancing hydrogen peroxide activation of CuCo layered double hydroxide by compositing with biochar: Performance and mechanism

In this study, CuCo layered double hydroxide/biochar composite (CuCo LDH/BC) was prepared and employed for activating H₂O₂ to degrade ciprofloxacin (CIP), a common fluroquinolone antibiotic detected in water environment. The as-synthesized catalysts were also comprehensively characterized to study the physiochemical properties. For the catalytic activity, the degradation rate of CuCo LDH/BC to CIP was approximately 1.5 times higher than that of CuCo LDH. The improved catalytic activity can be ascribed to the synergistic effect between CuCo LDH and BC, such as more functional groups, accelerated electron transfer, and varied charge distribution. Meanwhile, CuCo LDH/BC/H₂O₂ could degrade CIP efficiently in a wider pH range comparing with CuCo LDH/H₂O₂, and the efficiency was approximately 84.7% at neutral pH within 90 min. The generation of OH, O₂^- and ¹O₂ in CuCo LDH/BC/H₂O₂ system were then verified by electron spin resonance (ESR) technology. The quenching experiments indicated that both non-radical pathway (¹O₂) and radical pathway (OH, O₂^-) led to CIP degradation, in which O₂^- and ¹O₂ made major contribution. Then, the intermediate products of CIP during catalytic reaction were monitored by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), and the environmental risk of these degradation intermediates was tested through seed germination experiments. This study tends to provide valuable information for LDH/BC application in heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction.

Effects of biochar-based materials on the bioavailability of soil organic pollutants and their biological impacts

Motivated by the unique structure and superior properties, biochar-based materials, including pristine biochar and composites of biochar with other functional materials, are considered as new generation materials for diverse multi-functional applications, which may be intentionally or unintentionally released to soil. The influencing mechanism of biochar-based material on soil organisms is a key aspect for quantifying and predicting its benefits and trade-offs. This work focuses on the effects of biochar-based materials on soil organisms within the past ten years. 206 sources are reviewed and available knowledge on biochar-based materials' impacts on soil organisms is summarized from a diverse perspective, including the pollutant bioavailability changes in soil, and potential effects of biochar-based materials on soil organisms. Herein, effects of biochar-based materials on the bioavailability of soil organic pollutants are detailed, from the perspective of plant, microorganism, and soil fauna. Potential biological effects of pristine biochar (PBC), metal/metal compounds-biochar composites (MBC), clay minerals-biochar composites (CMBC), and carbonaceous materials-biochar composites (CBC) on soil organisms are highlighted for the first time. And possible mechanisms are presented based on the different characters of biochar-based materials as well as various environmental interactions. Finally, the bottleneck and challenges of risk assessment of biochar-based materials as well as future prospects are proposed. This work not only promotes the development of risk assessment system of biochar-based materials, but broadens the strategy for the design and optimization of environmental-friendly biochar materials.

Metal-organic frameworks as a good platform for the fabrication of multi-metal nanomaterials: design strategies, electrocatalytic applications and prospective

MOF-derived multi-metal nanomaterials are attracting numerous attentions in widespread applications such as catalysis, sensors, energy storage and conversion, and environmental remediation. Compared to the monometallic counterparts, the presence of foreign metal is expected to bring new physicochemical properties, thus exhibiting synergistic effect for enhanced performance. MOFs have been proved as a good platform for the fabrication of polymetallic nanomaterials with requisite features. Herein, various design strategies related to constructing multi-metallic nanomaterials from MOFs are summarized for the first time, involving metal nodal substitution, seed epitaxial growth, ion-exchange strategy, guest species encapsulation, solution impregnation and combination with extraneous substrate. Afterwards, the recent advances of multi-metallic nanomaterials for electrocatalytic applications, including oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), are systematically discussed. Finally, a personal outlook on the future trends and challenges are also presented with hope to enlighten deeper understanding and new thoughts for the development of multi-metal nanomaterials from MOFs.

Removal of chloride from water and wastewater: Removal mechanisms and recent trends

Increased chloride concentration can cause salinization, which has become a serious and widespread environmental problem nowadays. This review aims at providing comprehensive and state-of-the-art knowledge and insights of technologies for chloride removal. Mechanisms for chloride removal mainly include chemical precipitation, adsorption, oxidation and membrane separation. In chemical precipitation, chloride removal by forming CuCl, AgCl, BiOCl and Friedel's salt. Adsorbents used in chloride removal mainly include ion exchangers, bimetal oxides and carbon-based electrodes. Oxidation for chloride removal contains ozone-based, electrochemical and sulfate radical-based oxidation. Membrane separation for chloride removal consists of diffusion dialysis, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis and electrodialysis. In this review, we specifically proposed the factors that affect chloride removal process and the corresponding strategies for improving removal efficiency. In the last section, the remaining challenges of method explorations and material developments were stated to provide guidelines for future development of chloride removal technologies.

Impacts of typical engineering nanomaterials on the response of rhizobacteria communities and rice (Oryza sativa L.) growths in waterlogged antimony-contaminated soils

The combined eco-risks of Sb (widely presented in soils, especially nearing mining areas) and the engineering nanomaterials (ENMs) (applied in agriculture and soil remediation) still remain uncovered. The current study investigated the impacts of single and combined exposure of CuO, CeO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) with Sb on rice growths and rhizosphere bacterial communities. The results showed that co-exposure of CuO NPs (0.075 wt%) with Sb (III) posed the most adverse impacts on root biomass and branches (up to 66.59% and 70.00% compared to other treatments, respectively). Treatments containing MWCNTs showed insignificant dose-dependent effects, while CeO₂ NPs combined with Sb (III) showed significant synergistic stimulating effects on the fresh weights of root and shoot, by 68.30% and 73.48% (p < 0.05) compared to single Sb exposure, respectively. The rice planting increased the percentage of non-specifically sorbed Sb in soils by 1.50-14.49 than the no-planting stage. Analysis on microbial communities revealed that co-exposure of CuO NPs with Sb (III) induced the greatest adverse impacts on rhizobacteria abundances and community structures at both phylum and genus levels. Therein, significant decrease of Bacteroidetes, Acidobacteria and increase of Firmicutes abundance at the phylum level were observed. This study provided information about the risks of different ENMs released to Sb-contaminated soils under flooded condition on both crops and bacterial communities.

Biochar in the 21st century: A data-driven visualization of collaboration, frontier identification, and future trend

The massive amounts of publication data are highly valuable, because in addition to the advancement in science, technology, and policy, such data can provide critical information and guidance on what have been published, what topical changes have evolved, and what are the trending fields deserving more attention. In the 21st century, biochar has played an indispensable role in the long-term global development strategies in response to "Carbon neutralization", "Agricultural management", and "Environmental restoration", and accumulated many high-quality publications. Herein, this study provides a new data-driven bibliometric analysis strategy and framework for mining the core content of massive literature data, and aims at bringing unique insights for the research prospects as well as opportunities of biochar. The results show that biochar researches have made great progress from 1999 to 2020, but cross-disciplinary teamwork should be further emphasized. The research frontier identification reveals that sewage treatment, efficient removal, and functional composite materials will be the issues which must be paid continual attention at present and in the future. Furthermore, studies on global climate impact, biomass resource utilization, carbon sequestration, carbon cycle, and even the negative effects of biochar have gradually begun to be taken seriously.

Recent advances in impacts of microplastics on nitrogen cycling in the environment: A review

Nitrogen cycling plays a decisive role in biogeochemistry, and largely depends on microbial driven nitrogen transformation. The environmental problems caused by microplastics are becoming more serious, and the analysis and control of its pollution in the environment have become a research hotspot in the field. The nitrogen transformation and nitrogen cycling in the environment are mainly driven by microorganisms in the environment, and the existence of microplastics can affect the microbial population, abundance and type, thus affecting the transformation of nitrogen. The effect of microplastics on microorganisms involved in nitrogen transformation is briefly described. This paper mainly reviews the research progress on the impacts of microplastics on nitrogen transformation and nitrogen cycling in water, soil, sediment and sewage sludge. Microplastic type, size and concentration can cause obvious difference in the impacts of microplastics on nitrogen transformation. Then, response and mechanism of microplastics to microorganism mediated nitrogen transformation and nitrogen cycling are introduced. Processes of nitrogen transformation are affected by interfering with microorganism diversity and structure, enzyme activities and related coding genes and oxygen flux. Additionally, additives released from microplastics can also affect the microbial activity. However, mechanisms of microplastics on environmental nitrogen transformation and nitrogen cycling are not fully understood due to the lack of relevant research. There are effective strategies to evaluate complex environmental systems, prolong action time, strengthen multi factor and multi-level research, and assist molecular biology and stable isotope technology. This review article can provide valuable insights into the impact of microplastics on microorganisms mediated nitrogen transformation processes and evaluate the impact on ecological and environmental health.

Hypomethylation-induced prognostic marker zinc finger DHHC-type palmitoyltransferase 12 contributes to glioblastoma progression

Background

Glioma is the most common intracranial primary malignancy, characterized by abnormal signal transductions caused by transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulators. Studies show the palmitoylation of oncoproteins and tumor suppressors participate in cancer progression, while studies of protein S-palmitoyltransferases in glioma are limited. A systematic analysis of zinc finger DHHC-type palmitoyltransferases (ZDHHC) in glioma is still lacking.

Methods

A prognostic heatmap and Kaplan-Meier overall survival plot of 24 members of the ZDHHC family in pan-cancer created. The expression and prognostic significance of ZDHHC12 was analyzed by using Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) and PrognoScan. DBTRG and U251 cells with silenced ZDHHC12 expression were constructed and used for cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), Transwell assay and wound healing assay in vitro.

Results

Here, we first conducted expression and prognostic analyses of 24 ZDHHCs from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA), and other glioma datasets. We found ZDHHC12 to be the only unfavorable prognostic marker in glioma. The function of ZDHHC12 in glioma was then investigated with loss-of-function strategies and in vitro cell assays. Results showed that ZDHHC12 knockdown remarkably reduced the growth, migration, and invasion capabilities in DBTRG and U251 cell lines, suggesting that ZDHHC12 may contribute to malignant behavior in glioma cells. Finally, the molecular basis for ZDHHC12 expression in glioma was analyzed, and DNA hypomethylation was found to be responsible for increased ZDHHC12 mRNA expression and related prognoses.

Conclusions

ZDHHC12 positively promoted the proliferation and migration of glioma cells. Decreased DNA methylation may lead to increased ZDHHC12 expression in gliomas. This study may deepen the understanding of glioma progression and therapeutics.

Pyrite-mediated advanced oxidation processes: Applications, mechanisms, and enhancing strategies

Proper treatment of wastewater is one of the key issues to the sustainable development of human society, and people have been searching for high-efficiency and low-cost methods for wastewater treatment. This article reviews recent studies about pyrite-mediated advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in removing refractory organics from wastewater. The basic information of pyrite and its characteristics for AOPs are first introduced. Then, the performance and mechanisms of pyrite-mediated Fenton oxidation, electro-Fenton oxidation, and persulfate oxidation processes are carefully reviewed and presented. Natural pyrite is an abundant low-cost heterogeneous catalyst for AOPs, and the slow release of Fe²⁺ and the self-regulation of solution pH are highlighted characteristics of pyrite-mediated AOPs. In AOPs, the interaction between Fe³⁺ and pyrite facilitates the Fe²⁺ regeneration and the Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ cycle. Making pyrite into nanoparticles, assisting by ultrasound and light irradiation, and adding exogenous Fe³⁺, organic chelating agents, or biochar is effective to enhance the performance of pyrite-mediated AOPs. Based on the analyses of those pyrite-mediated AOPs and their enhancing strategies, the future development directions are proposed in the aspects of toxicity research, mechanism research, and technological coupling.

CRISPR screening of E3 ubiquitin ligases reveals Ring Finger Protein 185 as a novel tumor suppressor in glioblastoma repressed by promoter hypermethylation and miR-587

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive malignant primary brain tumor. E3 ligases play important functions in glioma pathogenesis. CRISPR system offers a powerful platform for genome manipulation, while the screen of E3 ligases in GBM still remains to be explored. Here, we first constructed an E3 ligase small guide RNA (sgRNAs) library for glioma cells growth screening. After four passages, 299 significantly enriched or lost genes (SELGs) were compared with the initial state. Then the clinical significance of SELGs were validated and analyzed with TCGA glioblastoma and CGGA datasets. As RNF185 showed lost signal, decreased expression and favorable prognostic significance, we chose RNF185 for functional analysis. In vitro overexpressed cellular phenotype showed that RNF185 was a tumor suppressor in two glioma cell lines. Finally, the molecular mechanism of decreased RNF185 expression was investigated and increased miR-587 expression and DNA hypermethylation was evaluated. This study would provide a link between the molecular basis and glioblastoma pathogenesis, and a novel perspective for glioblastoma treatment.

Self-assembly hybridization of COFs and g-C3N4: Decipher the charge transfer channel for enhanced photocatalytic activity

Organic semiconductors have been recognized as a new generation of photocatalysts for pollutants degradation and energy production. Herein, organic heterojunction (TpMa/CN) consisting of carbon nitride and β-ketoenamine-based covalent organic framework is fabricated via a controllable self-assembly approach. The as-prepared TpMa/CN heterojunctions show enlarged visible-light absorption. The optimum TpMa/CN-5 photocatalyst achieves the highest photocatalytic activity towards tetracycline degradation, and its photocatalytic degradation rate is improved by 2.3 and 4.3 times than TpMa and CN, respectively. As a multifunctional photocatalyst, TpMa/CN-5 sample also shows remarkable photocatalytic activity for hydrogen peroxide production (880.494 μM h^-1), which is 49 times higher than that of CN. Experimental and theoretical investigations indicate that a built-in electric field is formed at the interface of composite, which enables an accelerated charge transfer and separation. This work develops an effective strategy to design difunctional photocatalyst and deciphers the electronic properties and mechanisms of g-C₃N₄-based organic photocatalysts, which spurs further interests for organic heterojunction photocatalysts in the future.

Biofilm on microplastics in aqueous environment: Physicochemical properties and environmental implications

The excellent properties of plastics make them widely used all over the world. However, when plastics enter the environmental medium, microplastics will inevitably be produced due to physical, chemical and biological factors. Studies have shown that microplastics have been detected in terrestrial, aquatic and atmospheric environments. In addition, the presence of microplastics will provide a new artificial adhesion substrate for biofilms. It has been proved that the formation of biofilms could significantly change some properties of microplastics. Some studies have found that microplastics attached with biofilms have higher environmental risks and eco-toxicity. Therefore, considering the widespread existence of microplastics and the ecological risks of microplastic biofilms, the physical and chemical properties of biofilms on microplastics and their impact on microplastics in aqueous environment are worth reviewing. In this paper, we comprehensively reviewed representative studies in this area. Firstly, this study reviews that the existence of biofilms could change the transport and deposition of microplastics. Subsequently, the presence of biofilms would enhance the ability of microplastics to accumulate pollutant, such as persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals and antibiotics. Moreover, the effect of biofilms on microplastics enrichment of harmful microorganisms is summarized. Finally, some future research needs and strategies are proposed to better understand the problem of biofilms on microplastics.

Activation of persulfate by swine bone derived biochar: Insight into the specific role of different active sites and the toxicity of acetaminophen degradation pathways

Recently, persulfate (PS) activation system has grown up as a primary branch of advanced oxidation processes, and biochar has been recognized as a potential nonmetal material in this field. However, few studies have focused on the corresponding relationship between actives sites on biochar and active species in AOPs. To pave this way, similar biochar (obtained from different pyrolysis temperature) with different functional structures were involved. In this study, biochar derived from swine bone (BBC) was applied in PS activation system to degrade acetaminophen (ACT). The results showed that both radical and non-radical pathway worked in the PS/BBCs systems, and the degradation rate (from 0.1042 to 0.4364 min^-1) climbed with the increase of pyrolysis temperature (from 700 to 900 °C). To probe into the corresponding relationship between functional structure and active species, the effect of pyrolysis temperature on functional structure was analyzed. It came out that 1) defects could act as active sites for various active species; 2) persistent free radicals could do favor to the generation of ¹O₂ and O₂^-; 3) hydroxyapatite in swine bone only served as hard templet for the porous structure. ACT degradation process was measured by Liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer, and Scendesmus obliquus was applied to investigate the toxicity of PS/BBCs system. It illustrated that the existence of SO₄^- mainly contributed to the generation of high toxic intermediates (such as biphenyl and diphenyl ether) in the PS/BBCs system. Furthermore, the enhancement of adsorption capacity would mitigate the toxicity of PS/BBCs systems to some extent.

Efficient antibiotics removal via the synergistic effect of manganese ferrite and MoS2

The use of antibiotics for beings is a most significant milestone in present era. However, owing to the excessive use, a large amount of antibiotics accumulated in water, leading to serious pollution. An efficient method is urgently needed to treat the antibiotics pollution. Photo-Fenton process is a green method with utilizing solar energy. Catalyst is important. This work combines manganese ferrite MnFe₂O₄ and MoS₂ to synthesize MnFe₂O₄-MoS₂ (FMG) composite as the catalyst of photo-Fenton process, which shows good performance on tetracycline antibiotics degradation. Light intensity exhibits positive correlation with the catalytic activity. h⁺, •OH and ¹O₂ participate in tetracycline degradation. h⁺ plays a key role in tetracycline removal. •OH has a little impact on tetracycline removal, but it has a great impact on the mineralization ability of this photo-Fenton process. Additionally, cycling experiments confirm the stability of FMG. And owing to its magnetism, FMG can be easily recycled by external magnetic field. This photo-Fenton process over FMG with utilizing the synergism of MnFe₂O₄ and MoS₂ is a promising method for antibiotics pollution treatment.

Effects of oxytetracycline and zinc ion on nutrient removal and biomass production via microalgal culturing in anaerobic digester effluent

Removal of nutrients from swine wastewater digester effluent (SWDE) by microalgae Coelastrella sp. and production of Coelastrella sp. were investigated at the presence of oxytetracycline (OTC) and Zn(II). Mechanisms of stress of OTC and Zn(II) on microalgae were discussed via analyzing the removal performance of SWDE and biochemical characteristics of microalgae. Results showed that removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen and biomass yield of microalgae at the presence of 5000 μg/L of OTC decreased by 13.1% - 50.1% and 28.2% -71.5%, respectively, when Zn concentration was increased from 0.50 mg/L to 5.0 mg/L. The presence of 5.0 mg/L Zn(II) promoted the accumulation of lipids in microalgae, and the presence of 50 μg/L OTC increased unsaturation of fatty acid methyl ester. Content of glutathione and activity of both glutamine synthetase and superoxide dismutase decreased with the increase of OTC concentration, while content of adenosine triphosphatase increased when Zn(II) concentration was also increased.

A critical review of biochar-based materials for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated environment: Applications and practical evaluations

The contamination of heavy metals (HMs) in the environment has aroused a global concern. The valid remediation of HM contaminated environment is a highly significant issue. As alternative to carbon materials, biochar has been vastly documented for the remediation of HM contaminated environment. However, there are some possible imperfections to meet the actual remediation tasks as the finite properties of raw biochar, and the remediation process is complex and unexpectedly. This review focuses on the progress made on environmental HM remediation by biochar-based materials within the past six years. The property analysis and key modifications of biochar are summarized inspired by their applicability or necessity for HM decontamination, and the environmental remediation as well as the implicated mechanisms are thoroughly elaborated from multiple pivotal sides. The evaluations of practical application associated with biochar amendment are also presented. Finally, some pertinent improvements and research directions are proposed. To our knowledge, this article is the first time to make a systematic summary on the reliability and practicability of biochar-based materials for environmental HM remediation, and critically pointed out the existing issues to facilitate the judicious design of biochar-based materials and understanding the research trends. It is also aims to provide reference for subsequent research and propel the practical applications.
