Purifying Water Containing Both Anionic and Cationic Species Using a (Zn, Cu)O, ZnO, and Cobalt Ferrite Based Multiphase Adsorbent System

Reduced Graphene Oxide-Modified Spinel Cobalt Ferrite Nanocomposite: Synthesis, Characterization, and Its Superior Adsorption Performance for Dyes and Heavy Metals

This work is dedicated to the synthesis, characterization, and adsorption performance of reduced graphene oxide-modified spinel cobalt ferrite nanoparticles. The as-synthesized reduced graphene oxide cobalt ferrite (RGCF) nanocomposite has been characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, FESEM coupled with EDXS, XRD, HRTEM, zeta potential, and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurements. FESEM proves the particle size in the range of 10 nm. FESEM, EDX, TEM, FTIR, and XPS analyses provide the proof of successful incorporation of rGO sheets with cobalt ferrite nanoparticles. The crystallinity and spinel phase of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles have been shown by XRD results. The saturation magnetization (M _s) was measured as 23.62 emu/g, proving the superparamagnetic behavior of RGCF. The adsorption abilities of the synthesized nanocomposite have been tested using cationic crystal violet (CV) and brilliant green (BG) and anionic methyl orange (MO) and Congo red (CR) dyes. The adsorption trend for MO, CR, BG, and As(V) follows RGCF > rGO > CF at neutral pH. Adsorption studies have been accomplished by optimizing parameters like pH (2-8), adsorbent dose (1-3 mg/25 mL), initial concentration (10-200 mg/L), and contact time at constant room temperature (RT). To further investigate the sorption behavior, isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies have been conducted. Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models suited better for the adsorption of dyes and heavy metals. The maximum adsorption capacities (q _m) obtained have been found as 1666.7, 1000, 416.6, and 222.2 mg/g for MO, CR, BG, and As, respectively, with operational parameters such as T = 298.15 K; RGCF dose: 1 mg for MO and 1.5 mg each for CR, BG, and As. Thus, the RGCF nanocomposite was found to be an excellent adsorbent for the removal of dyes and heavy metals.

Surface basicity mediated rapid and selective adsorptive removal of Congo red over nanocrystalline mesoporous CeO2

Herein we first report surface basicity mediated rapid and selective adsorptive removal of organic pollutants over nanocrystalline mesoporous CeO₂. The role of surface features in controlling the selectivity and efficiency of adsorption is well known. Nevertheless, the possibility of tuning the adsorption capacity and selectivity of adsorbents through their surface characteristics remains less explored. In this work, the surface basicity of mesoporous CeO₂ nanoparticles was improved by Er³⁺ doping under two different reaction conditions: via sol-gel and sol-hydrothermal methods. The nature and amount of surface basic sites were determined with the help of CO₂ temperature programmed desorption (TPD). The adsorption capacity and selectivity of four different CeO₂ samples were investigated using Congo red, methyl orange, and methylene blue as the model pollutants. From the adsorption studies, Er³⁺ doped CeO₂ synthesized by the sol-gel method, having the highest amount of surface basic sites, proved to be the most efficient and highly selective adsorbent among the four developed variants of CeO₂ towards Congo red. According to the proposed mechanism, surface basicity can be employed as a controlling parameter capable of tuning the adsorption capacity as well as the selectivity of CeO₂ towards organic pollutants.

Metal organic framework UiO-66 and activated carbon composite sorbent for the concurrent adsorption of cationic and anionic metals

A composite sorbent for the simultaneous removal of both Hg²⁺ and SeO₃^2- from aqueous media was produced from the solvothermal synthesis of a zirconium metal organic framework, UiO-66, in the presence of activated carbon. The composite sorbent has a large surface area of 1051 m² g^-1 with crystalized porous structures and has strong thermal stability up to 600 °C. The contaminant uptake of the sorbent follows a Langmuir adsorption isotherm with maximum sorption capacity of 205 mg g^-1 and 168 mg g^-1 for Hg²⁺ and SeO₃^2-, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy results show that the Se regions overlap exclusively with Zr-rich regions suggesting that SeO₃^2- adsorption depends entirely on the exposed UiO-66 surface. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra of Se 3d and Hg 4f showed the association of SeO₃^2- and Hg²⁺ on the UiO-66 and carbon surfaces, respectively. The sorbent could facilitate the development of a single process for the simultaneous removal of cationic Hg and anionic Se as well as other similar ionic metals with opposite charges from aqueous media.

Superior adsorption performance for triphenylmethane dyes on 3D architectures assembled by ZnO nanosheets as thin as ∼1.5nm

The 3-dimensional hierarchical ZnO flower-like architectures have been synthesized in a Zn(Ac)2·2H2O-Na2SeO3-KBH4-pyridine solvothermal system at 100°C for 24h. The flower-like architecture is assembled from ZnO nanosheets with a thickness of ∼1.5nm, and the flower-like architecture specific surface area is 132m(2)/g. When the ZnO flower-like architecture is used as the adsorbent for acid fuschin (AF), malachite green (MG), basic fuchsin (BF), congo red (CR) and acid red (AR) in water, the adsorption capacities for AF, MG, BF, CR and AR are 7154.9, 2587.0, 1377.9, 85.0 and 38.0mg/g, respectively. Evidently, the as-obtained ZnO flower-like architectures show excellent adsorption performances for triphenylmethane dyes, and the adsorption capacity of 7154.9mg/g for AF is the highest of all adsorbents for dyes. The adsorption mechanism can be attributed to the electrostatic attraction and the formation of ion-association complex between triphenylmethane dyes and ZnO hierarchical flower-like architectures.

A chemically-induced nanorod to QD transition is achieved using co-surfactants. This is different from the physical instability driven transitions reported so far in nanowires and polymers. We propose a suitable mechanism for the observed phenomenon.
