Pathway selection in the self-assembly of Rh4L4 coordination squares under kinetic control

Pathway selection principles in reversible reaction networks such as molecular self-assembly have not been established yet, because achieving kinetic control in reversible reaction networks is more complicated than in irreversible ones. In this study, we discovered that coordination squares consisting of cis-protected dinuclear rhodium(II) corner complexes and linear ditopic ligands are assembled under kinetic control, perfectly preventing the corresponding triangles, by modulating their energy landscapes with a weak monotopic carboxylate ligand (2,6-dichlorobenzoate: dcb-) as the leaving ligand. Experimental and numerical approaches revealed the self-assembly pathway where the cyclization step to form the triangular complex is blocked by dcb-. It was also found that one of the molecular squares assembled into a dimeric structure owing to the solvophobic effect, which was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Diazazethrene bisimide: a strongly electron-accepting π-system synthesized via the incorporation of both imide substituents and imine-type nitrogen atoms into zethrene

The development of highly electron-accepting π-systems is a fundamentally challenging issue despite their potential applications as high-performance n-type organic semiconductors, organic rechargeable batteries, and stable redox-active organocatalysts. Herein, we demonstrate that the incorporation of both imide substituents and imine-type nitrogen atoms into zethrene affords the strongly electron-accepting π-system diazazethrene bisimide (DAZBI). DAZBI has a low-lying LUMO (-4.3 eV vs. vacuum) and is readily reduced by the weak reductant l-ascorbic acid to afford the corresponding dihydro species. The injection of two electrons into DAZBI provides the corresponding dianion. These reduced species display remarkable stability, even under ambient conditions, and an intense red fluorescence. A DAZBI dimer, which was also synthesized, effectively accommodated four electrons upon electron injection.

Shape-Dependent Complementary Ditopic Terpyridine Pair with Two Levels of Self-Recognition for Coordination-Driven Self-Assembly

Molecular recognition in biological systems plays a vital role in the precise construction of biomacromolecules and the corresponding biological activities. Such recognition mainly relies on the highly specific binding of complementary molecular pairs with complementary sizes, shapes, and intermolecular forces. It still remains challenging to develop artificial complementary motif pairs for coordination-driven self-assembly. Herein, a series of shape-dependent complementary motif pairs, based on ditopic 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (TPY) backbone, are designed and synthesized. The fidelity degrees of self-assemblies from these motifs are carefully evaluated by multi-dimensional mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and molecular modeling. In addition, two levels of self-recognition in both homoleptic and heteroleptic assembly are discovered in the assembled system. Through finely tuning the shape and size of the ligands, a complementary pair is developed with error-free narcissistically self-sorting at two levels of self-recognition, and the intrinsic principle is carefully investigated.

Stimuli-Induced Reversible Transformation between Decanuclear and Pentanuclear Gold(I) Sulfido Complexes

Decanuclear and pentanuclear gold(I) sulfido complexes of phenanthrene- and dibenzothiophene-based diphosphine ligands were synthesized and characterized. Unprecedented stimuli-induced reversible transformation between decanuclear and pentanuclear gold(I) sulfido complexes was observed, which could be readily monitored by NMR and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy in solution. Remarkably, the decanuclear gold(I) sulfido complex (Au₁₀-L^Ph) was found to show a highly reversible transformation process, which is stable for over 10 successive cycles in solution. The stimuli-induced reversible transformation behavior of the gold(I) sulfido complexes was found to depend on the P-P bite distance of the bidentate phosphine ligands.

Redox-Switchable Complexes Based on Nanographene-NHCs

A series of rhodium and iridium complexes with a N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand decorated with a perylene-diimide-pyrene moiety are described. Electrochemical studies reveal that the complexes can undergo two successive one-electron reduction events, associated to the reduction of the PDI moiety attached to the NHC ligand. The reduction of the ligand produces a significant increase on its electron-donating character, as observed from the infrared spectroelectrochemical studies. The rhodium complex was tested in the [3+2] cycloaddition of diphenylcyclopropenone and methylphenylacetylene, where it displayed a redox-switchable behavior. The neutral complex showed moderate activity, which was suppressed when the catalyst was reduced.

Solvent and Counteranion Assisted Dynamic Self-Assembly of Molecular Triangles and Tetrahedral Cages

Self-assembly of naked Pd^II ions separately with newly designed bis(3-pyridyl)benzothiadiazole (L1) and bis(3-pyridyl)thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (L2) donors separately, under varying experimental conditions, yielded Pd₄L₈ (L= L1 or L2) tetrahedral cages and their homologous Pd₃L₆ (L= L1 or L2) double-walled triangular macrocycles. The resulting assemblies exhibited solvent, temperature, and counteranion induced dynamic equilibrium. Treatment of L1 with Pd(BF₄)₂ in acetonitrile (ACN) resulted in selective formation of a tetrahedral cage [Pd₄(L1)₈](BF₄)₈ (1a), which is in dynamic equilibrium with its homologue triangle [Pd₃(L1)₆](BF₄)₆ (2a) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). On the other hand, similar self-assembly using L2 instead of L1 yielded an equilibrium mixture of tetrahedral cage [Pd₄(L2)₈](BF₄)₈ (3a) and triangle [Pd₃(L2)₆](BF₄)₆ (4a) forms in both ACN and DMSO. The assembles were characterized by multinuclear NMR and ESI-MS while the structure of the tetrahedral cage (1a) was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Existence of a dynamic equilibrium between the assemblies in solution has been investigated via variable temperature ¹H NMR. The equilibrium constant K = ([Pd₄L₈]³/[Pd₃L₆]⁴) was calculated at each experimental temperature and fitted with the Van't Hoff equation to determine the standard enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°) associated with the interconversion of the double-walled triangle to tetrahedral cage. The thermodynamic feasibility of structural interconversion was analyzed from the change in ΔG°, which suggests favorable conversion of Pd₃L₆ triangle to Pd₄L₈ cage at elevated temperature for L1 in DMSO and L2 in ACN. Interestingly, similar self-assembly reactions of L1 and L2 with Pd(NO₃)₂ instead of Pd(BF₄)₂ resulted in selective formation of a tetrahedral cage [Pd₄(L1)₈](NO₃)₈ (1b) and double-walled triangle [Pd₃(L2)₆](NO₃)₆ (4b), respectively.

2,9-Diazadibenzoperylene and 2,9-Dimethyldibenzoperylene-1,3,8,10-tetratriflates: Key to Functionalized 2,9-Diazaperopyrenes

The synthesis of 2,9-diaza-1,3,8,10-tetratriflato-dibenzoperylene (DDP 3 a) and corresponding 2,9-dimethyl-1,3,8,10-tetratriflato-dibenzoperylene (DBP 3 b) has been developed at multigram scale via reduction of one of the industrially most important high-performance dyes, perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI), and of the corresponding dihydroxy peropyrenequinone precursor. The focus of this paper is on the reactivity pattern of 3 a as key intermediate towards highly functionalized 2,9-diazadibenzopyrelenes (DDPs) obtained via catalytic substitution of four triflate by aryl, heteroaryl, alkynyl, aminyl, and O-phosphanyl substituents. The influence of electron-donating substituents (OSiMe3 , OPt-Bu2 , N-piperidinyl), electron-withdrawing (OTf, 3,5-bis-trifluoromethyl-phenyl), and of electron-rich π-conjugated (2-thienyl, 4-tert-butylphenyl, trimethylsilyl-ethynyl) substituents on optoelectronic and structural properties of these functionalized DDPs has been investigated via XRD analyses, UV/Vis, PL spectroscopy, and by electroanalytical CV. These results were correlated to results of DFT and TD-DFT calculations. Thus, functionalized DPPs with easily tunable HOMO and LUMO energies and gap became available via a new and reliable synthetic strategy starting from readily available PTCDI.

Construction of Entropically Favored Supramolecular Metal-Ligand Trimeric Assemblies Supported by Flexible Pyridylaminophosphorus(V) Scaffolds

The self-assembly reactions of tetratopic metal acceptors with the flexible bidentate ligands are known to yield self-assembled molecular squares of the type [M₄L₈], triangles of composition [M₃L₆], or a mixture of these two. In this work, we demonstrate the preferential formation of a trimeric cage assembly of the formula [Pd₃(L¹)₆·(BF₄)₆] (1a) over the tetrameric cage [Pd₄(L¹)₈·(BF₄)₈] (1b) by employing a flexible dipodal phosphoramide ligand, [PhPO(NH(3-Py))₂] (L¹; 3-Py = 3-aminopyridine), in a reaction with [Pd(CH₃CN)₄·(BF₄)₂]. The entropically favored trimeric self-assembly of 1a is the predominant species in the solution [dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-d₆] at room temperature. In fact, at higher temperatures, 1a was found to be the only product, as observed from the disappearance of the peak due to 1b in the ³¹P NMR spectrum. However, in a 1:1 mixture of acetonitrile (MeCN)-d₃ and DMSO-d₆, the tetrameric species 1b is the preferred species, as revealed by the ³¹P NMR and electrospray ionization mass spectral analyses. The structure of the molecular trimer 1a has been established in the solid state by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Interestingly, treatment of an another flexible ligand, [MePO(NH(3-Py))₂] (L²), with the same Pd(II) acceptor resulted in exclusive formation of the trimeric cage [Pd₃(L²)₆·(BF₄)₆] (2).

Macrocyclic Complexes Derived from Four cis-L2 Pt Corners and Four Butadiynediyl Linkers; Syntheses, Electronic Structures, and Square versus Skew Rhombus Geometries

The dialkyl malonate derived 1,3-diphosphines R₂ C(CH₂ PPh₂ )₂ (R=a, Me; b, Et; c, n-Bu; d, n-Dec; e, Bn; f, p-tolCH₂ ) are combined with (p-tol₃ P)₂ PtCl₂ or trans-(p-tol₃ P)₂ Pt((C≡C)₂ H)₂ to give the chelates cis-(R₂ C(CH₂ PPh₂ )₂ )PtCl₂ (2 a-f, 94-69 %) or cis-(R₂ C(CH₂ PPh₂ )₂ )Pt((C≡C)₂ H)₂ (3 a-f, 97-54 %). Complexes 3 a-d are also available from 2 a-d and excess 1,3-butadiyne in the presence of CuI (cat.) and excess HNEt₂ (87-65 %). Under similar conditions, 2 and 3 react to give the title compounds [(R₂ C(CH₂ PPh₂ )₂ )[Pt(C≡C)₂ ]₄ (4 a-f; 89-14 % (64 % avg)), from which ammonium salts such as the co-product [H₂ NEt₂ ]⁺ Cl^- are challenging to remove. Crystal structures of 4 a,b show skew rhombus as opposed to square Pt₄ geometries. The NMR and IR properties of 4 a-f are similar to those of mono- or diplatinum model compounds. However, cyclic voltammetry gives only irreversible oxidations. As compared to mono-platinum or Pt(C≡C)₂ Pt species, the UV-visible spectra show much more intense and red-shifted bands. Time dependent DFT calculations define the transitions and principal orbitals involved. Electrostatic potential surface maps reveal strongly negative Pt₄ C₁₆ cores that likely facilitate ammonium cation binding. Analogous electronic properties of Pt₃ C₁₂ and Pt₅ C₂₀ homologs and selected equilibria are explored computationally.

Ring size matters: supramolecular isomerism in self-assembled redox-active tetra- and hexaruthenium macrocycles

Self-assembly of a divinylthiophene-bridged diruthenium complex with 2,5-furandicarboxylate leads to the formation of two macrocyclic structures that differ solely with regard to their respective nuclearities. Both supramolecular isomers were fully characterized and the conversion of the hexa- to the tetraruthenium macrocycle was followed by NMR monitoring.

Combining Synthesis and Self-Assembly in One Pot To Construct Complex 2D Metallo-Supramolecules Using Terpyridine and Pyrylium Salts

Multicomponent self-assembly in one pot provides an efficient way for constructing complex architectures using multiple types of building blocks with different levels of interactions orthogonally. The preparation of multiple types of building blocks typically includes tedious synthesis. Here, we developed a multicomponent synthesis/self-assembly strategy, which combined covalent interaction (C-N bond, formed through condensation of pyrylium salt with primary amine) and metal-ligand interaction (N → Zn bond, formed through 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine-Zn coordination) in one pot. The high compatibility of this pair of interactions smoothly and efficiently converted three and four types of components into the desired complex structures, which are supramolecular Kandinsky Circles and spiderwebs, respectively.

Supramolecular chirality transformation driven by monodentate ligand binding to a coordinatively unsaturated self-assembly based on C 3-symmetric ligands

Monodentate ligand binding is facilitated by supramolecular chirality transformations from propeller-shaped chirality into single-twist chirality by altering the self-assembly of C 3-symmetric chiral ligands. The C 3-symmetric chiral ligands (Im R 3Bz and Im S 3Bz) contain three chiral imidazole side arms (Im R  and Im S ) at the 1,3,5-positions of a central benzene ring. Upon coordination to zinc ions (Zn2+), which have a tetrahedral coordination preference, the C 3-symmetric chiral ligands assemble, in a stepwise manner, into a propeller-shaped assembly with a general formula (Im( R or S ) 3Bz)4(Zn2+)3. In this structure each Zn2+ ion coordinates to the three individual imidazole side arms. The resulting assembly is formally coordinatively unsaturated (coordination number, n = 3) and capable of accepting monodentate co-ligands (imidazole: ImH2) to afford a coordinatively saturated assembly [(ImH2)3(Im R 3Bz)4(Zn2+)3]. The preformed propeller-shaped chirality is preserved during this transformation. However, an excess of the monodentate co-ligand (ImH2/Zn2+ molar ratio of ∼1.7) alters the propeller-shaped assembly into a stacked dimer assembly [(ImH2) m (Im R 3Bz)2(Zn2+)3] (m = 4-6) with single-twist chirality. This switch alters the degree of enhancement and the circular dichroism (CD) pattern, suggesting a structural transition into a chiral object with a different shape. This architectural chirality transformation presents a new approach to forming dynamic coordination-assemblies, which have transformable geometric chiral structures.

Syntheses, Structures, and Solution Studies of Multicomponent Macrocycles and Cages Based on Versatile Ligands

Different types of multinuclear half-sandwich rhodium macrocycles and cages were designed and synthesized by using two similar multifunctional hydroxamate ligands (pyrazine-2-hydroxamic acid (NaHL¹ ) and 4,4'-bipyridine-2-hydroxamic acid (KHL² )) featuring one monodentate site and two pairs of chelating sites. The Rh^III -Pd^II heterometallic macrocycles were constructed by using the semi-open palladium(II) source [Pd(en)Cl₂ ] with two free acceptor sites. However, only one kind of macrocycle was found when the shorter ligand L¹ was used, while in for the larger ligand, various spectroscopic techniques demonstrated the coexistence of hexanuclear and octanuclear macrocycles in solution and the proportions of both components depended on concentration and temperature. The palladium salt Pd(NO₃ )₂ , as a source of "naked" Pd²⁺ , was introduced to assemble the cuboid-shaped cage composed of two types of metal ions and three types of organic ligands. In addition, two silver(I)-containing mixed-metal complexes bridged by pyrazine were obtained, in which two forms of decanuclear complex with C_2v and C_2h point symmetry cocrystallized-one is a polymeric structure and the other is a discrete cage. However, the third form, with D₂ point symmetry, was found in the larger cage.

Supersnowflakes: Stepwise Self-Assembly and Dynamic Exchange of Rhombus Star-Shaped Supramolecules

With the goal of increasing the complexity of metallo-supramolecules, two rhombus star-shaped supramolecular architectures, namely, supersnowflakes, were designed and assembled using multiple 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine (tpy) ligands in a stepwise manner. In the design of multicomponent self-assembly, ditopic and tritopic ligands were bridged through Ru(II) with strong coordination to form metal-organic ligands for the subsequent self-assembly with a hexatopic ligand and Zn(II). The combination of Ru(II)-organic ligands with high stability and Zn(II) ions with weak coordination played a key role in the self-assembly of giant heteroleptic supersnowflakes, which encompassed three types of tpy-based organic ligands and two metal ions. With such a stepwise strategy, the self-sorting of individual building blocks was prevented from forming the undesired assemblies, e.g., small macrocycles and coordination polymers. Furthermore, the intra- and intermolecular dynamic exchange study of two supersnowflakes by NMR and mass spectrometry revealed the remarkable stability of these giant supramolecular complexes.

Self-Assembled Novel BODIPY-Based Palladium Supramolecules and Their Cellular Localization

Four new palladium metal supramolecules with triangular/square architectures derived from boron dipyrromethane (BODIPY) ligands were synthesized by self-assembly and fully characterized by ¹H and ³¹P NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These supramolecules were more cytotoxic to brain cancer (glioblastoma) cells than to normal lung fibroblasts. Their cytotoxicity to the glioblastoma cells was higher than that of a benchmark metal-based chemotherapy drug, cisplatin. The characteristic green fluorescence of the BODIPY ligands in these supramolecules permitted their intracellular visualization using confocal microscopy, and the compounds were localized in the cytoplasm and on the plasma membrane.

Heterocyclic Nanographenes and Other Polycyclic Heteroaromatic Compounds: Synthetic Routes, Properties, and Applications

Two-dimensionally extended, polycyclic heteroaromatic molecules (heterocyclic nanographenes) are a highly versatile class of organic materials, applicable as functional chromophores and organic semiconductors. In this Review, we discuss the rich chemistry of large heteroaromatics, focusing on their synthesis, electronic properties, and applications in materials science. This Review summarizes the historical development and current state of the art in this rapidly expanding field of research, which has become one of the key exploration areas of modern heterocyclic chemistry.

Light-Controlled Interconversion between a Self-Assembled Triangle and a Rhombicuboctahedral Sphere

Stimuli-responsive structural reorganizations play an important role in biological processes, often in combination with kinetic control scenarios. In supramolecular mimics of such systems, light has been established as the perfect external trigger. Here, we report on the light-driven structural rearrangement of a small, self-assembled Pd3L6 ring based on photochromic dithienylethene (DTE) ligands into a rhombicuboctahedral Pd24L48 sphere measuring about 6.4 nm across. When the wavelength is changed, this interconversion can be fully reversed, as confirmed by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry. The sphere was visualized by AFM, TEM, and GISAXS measurements. Due to dissimilarities in the photoswitch conformations, the interconversion rates between the two assemblies are drastically different in the two directions.

Self-Assembly Process of Dodecanuclear Pt(II)-Linked Cyclic Hexagon

The self-assembly process of a Pt(II)-linked hexagonal macrocycle consisting of six linear dinuclear Pt(II) units and six organic ditopic bent ligands was investigated. The process was monitored by (1)H NMR, and the intermediates in the self-assembly were analyzed by the n-k analysis. It was found that a 1:2 complex of a dinuclear Pt(II) unit and an organic ditopic ligand was exclusively observed as an intermediate with a certain lifetime and that the reaction of the 1:2 complex is the rate-determining step in the supramolecular macrocycle formation. The key 1:2 complex was unambiguously characterized by (1)H and DOSY NMR and ESI-TOF mass measurement.

Energy transfer within self-assembled cyclic multichromophoric arrays based on orthogonally arranged donor–acceptor building blocks

We herein present the coordination-driven supramolecular synthesis and photophysics of a [4+4] and a [2+2] assembly, built up by alternately collocated donor–acceptor chromophoric building blocks based, respectively, on the boron dipyrromethane (Bodipy) and perylene bisimide dye (PBI). In these multichromophoric scaffolds, the intensely absorbing/emitting dipoles of the Bodipy subunit are, by construction, cyclically arranged at the corners and aligned perpendicular to the plane formed by the closed polygonal chain comprising the PBI units. Steady-state and fs time-resolved spectroscopy reveal the presence of efficient energy transfer from the vertices (Bodipys) to the edges (PBIs) of the polygons. Fast excitation energy hopping – leading to a rapid excited state equilibrium among the low energy perylene-bisimide chromophores – is revealed by fluorescence anisotropy decays. The dynamics of electronic excitation energy hopping between the PBI subunits was approximated on the basis of a theoretical model within the framework of Förster energy transfer theory. All energy-transfer processes are quantitatively describable with Förster theory. The influence of structural deformations and orientational fluctuations of the dipoles in certain kinetic schemes is discussed.

A Self-Assembled Electro-Active M8L4 Cage Based on Tetrathiafulvalene Ligands

Two self-assembled redox-active cages are presented. They are obtained by coordination-driven self-assembly of a tetra-pyridile tetrathiafulvalene ligand with cis-M(dppf)(OTf)₂ (M = Pd or Pt; dppf = 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene; OTf = trifluoromethane-sulfonate) complexes. Both species are fully characterized and are constituted of 12 electro-active subunits that can be reversibly oxidized.
